Lord Blakeley’s Gift by Anneka R. Walker
Sweet novella! I really love the focus on giving and thinking of others, not just at Christmas, but all the time. Both of the leads, while not without fault, are endearing. I appreciated that neither one of them played coy, nor let their emotions keep them from trying to understand one another. Ivy’s grandmother turned out to be a humorous character when finally she speaks up. I will definitely seek out the authors full length novels.

A Season of Hope by Sian Ann Bessey
This was a charming novella, too! I loved the snowy scenes, as well as the inclusion of a realistically precocious child and a mischievous goat. The romance seemed to move a little fast, however, it works for me because they knew each other very well during childhood. Another new to me author whose full length books I’d like to read.

Christmas by the Sea by Carla Kelly
Okay, I think this one is my favorite so far! There is just something authentic about it. Not that the other two didn’t feel authentic, but the overall tone of this one feels classic and true to the period. It’s a nice change to feature a married couple and their children. I found the societal aspect interesting as well in that, even after marriage, the wife was not accepted by her husband’s family. She had no say in what her brother in law did while her husband was at sea, as he was the closest male relative. Despite setbacks, the family stayed realistic yet positive. And while I’m not sure if Mr. Paul was an angel or just a man with a big heart, but the question of it is charming rather than cheesy. Just a delight all around to read.

Expectations at Canterwood by Krista Jensen
Ooo, this to me is the most romantic story of the collection. Just so tender and very much a story about overcoming distrust and not letting the past color present choices. Both characters have interesting backstories that give them depth. The dialogue is witty and engaging, and I loved every scene between the two leads. I found the children in this story to be portrayed so accurately, which isn’t always the case. It also has some lovely winter scenes that made the story feel extra cozy. I would love to read more by this author for sure.

I confess that I requested this book because Carla Kelly is one of my all time favourite romance writers; but what I found therein were three new authors whose deft historical voices and warm messages of love made me want to check out more of their work.

That's the brilliance of novella collections and I am so happy that I discovered this one! A perfect treat!

Inside and out, is the proof that this is a Regency Christmas novella collection to add to your library. A beautiful cover, and four individually different but captivating stories will whisk you into Winter so fast, you can almost feel the chill of the snow falling and smell the aroma of the mince pies baking.

The romance is unhindered (one plus for a novella, it’s usually missing the agonizing roadblocks, typical of a longer story). With sweet chemistry, and even one story which dives deeper into the complexities of marriage and life with a husband at sea in the Navy.

The beauty of all of it is, you can pick this up for a quick short story or read them all in one go.

It’s no surprise then that this book received a starred review from Publishers weekly. Absolutely deserved it.

I read an early copy and this is my honest review.

I'm in twitterpated Regency heaven! What an exceptional collection of Christmas stories! I was only familiar with one author (Sian Ann Bessey) and bought A Hopeful Christmas because I loved the two books I've read by her but now I have discovered three new-to-me favourite authors! Woohoo! How cool is that?!

And this is definitely a case of all four novellas being equally matched. Gripping, well-written stories that speak to the true meaning of Christmas with engaging characters and emotional plots. I can't name a favourite for they all deliver exactly what the title promises -- hope. (And some delicious toe-curls besides!)

I listened to the audible version -- American narrator but does the dialogue with a British accent so it worked. :-)

Such a beautiful collection of regency romance Christmas stories! The gorgeous cover is eclipsed only by the beautiful stories within.

The four stories are all so different from each other and yet I enjoyed each one immensely. They all have that little bit of Christmas magic in them that has you believing that anything is possible at Christmastime.

Two of the stories centered on new romance and both had some wonderful character growth, one told the story a childhood friend returned home to discover he has feelings for his best friend's sister, and one explored the challenges that come in marriage with the husband away in the Navy.

Heartwarming, feel-good stories with endearing characters, sweet romance, and Christmas magic - what more could you ask for?

I enjoyed each novella from beginning to end and will treasure this book as part of my personal Christmas collection.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but it in no way affected my review.

If you're looking for a sweet and clean collection of novellas to enjoy and help you get in the Christmas spirit, might I recommend this one.

My favorite was Expectations at Canterwood. I really enjoyed the characters and mistaken identity of that one.

I didn't connect with Christmas by the Sea as much as I'd hoped. I think a lot of readers will enjoy it but I didn't quite connect with the characters. They were sweet and there was a fun surprise at the end.

There's plenty of snow, family, friends, reconnecting, finding healing, humor, frustrations, horses, finding lost things, finding new things, and plenty of sweet, sweet romance!

Content: All stories are clean and sweet.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I can't believe it's time for Christmas stories again! It seems like each year gets shorter & shorter. That being said, I really enjoyed each of these historical novellas centered around Christmas. Anneka Walker was the only author in this collection that I knew, so it was especially fun to discover some new-to-me writers! Here's my brief thoughts on each story:

Lord Blakley's Gift by Anneka Walker:
Miss Ivy Hunt and Lord Curtis Blakely are from two rivarly families who's feud years ago tore them apart. Not knowing this at first, upon meeting each other, immediately formed a bond of friendship. Can these two be the glue that finally pieces the families back together? I love how Ivy helped Lord Blakely discover the real meaning of Christmas—the joy of giving to those who have next to nothing. Her generous heart changed him into the kind of gentleman any woman would fall in love with. These two were perfect together!

A Season of Hope by Sian Ann Bessey:
Amelia Nesbitt's father passes away leaving the family practically destitute, all except for a run-down hunters cabin and lone goat. Lord Thomas Cunningham demands repayment when said goat eats his clothing while on the line drying. Will a Christmas miracle come in the form of Phillip—his son & Amelia's childhood friend—once he returned after many years? I enjoyed how these two pick up their friendship as if the years had never went by—and also how it turned into love. I also loved watching how they help soften Lord Cunninghams heart and show him the true meaning of Christmas; caring for one another and the bond of friendship.

Christmas by the Sea by Carla Kelly:
Royal Navy surgeon Will Crenshaw longs for home & hearth with his wife and children. Coming home early after two years certainly wasn't how he expected to find it! This story was a bit different with Will already being married, but it was quite enjoyable to watch all the events unfold. Again, finding the true meaning of Christmas for the family was front & center.

Expectations at Canterwood by Krista Lynne Jensen:
War-weary Richard Stanhope & spinster Marina Rowley wrap up this novella collection wonderfully! I loved watching their happily-ever-after unfold, in spite of a mistaken identity. That just adds to the charm of this story. I felt Richard was good for Marina and helped her to see her worth and worthy of love. A true “love conquers all” story!

I think any reader will find something to love about each story and come to care for the characters. These are heart-warming tales for the Christmas season where you'll be reminded of the true meaning of the holiday!

3 1/2, elevated to 4.

A selection of Christmas-themed Regency stories with a message of hope.

Lord Blakely's Gift by Anneka Walker
It took me a while to like Curtis but he actually grew and changed under Ivy's influence and friendship.

A Season of Hope by Sian Ann Bessey
Amelia and her family are not doing well financially since her father's passing, but Phillip's return from the West Indies changes the situation between her family and his.

Christmas by the Sea by Carla Kelly
DNF.

Expectations at Canterwood by Krista Lynne Jensen
Marina is considered "on the shelf" and attends a house party with her father and mother, with expectations to become friends with a returned lieutenant. After an identity misunderstanding, Marian and Richard form a friendship.
This story was my favorite and I really liked to see the characters from the author's Christmas Regency story in Christmas Grace (2017). It was great to see the couple and the children. The new characters were also very entertaining.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

I’m a longterm fan of Christmas anthologies and I pre-order everything that Carla Kelly publishes.
Thankfully, Carla Kelly hasn’t let me down with her story in this anthology. It is, as usual, a lovely romance, with Kelly’s beliefs on her sleeve, yet delivered with a kindness that is hard to beat. There will be no surprises for Kelly fans - her hero is flawless, his loving wife a pearl beyond price and their children are all cast in the same mould.. As I’ve mentioned in previous reviews, Kelly’s predictability could make her boring, but somehow it doesn’t - and that’s why she is such a keeper.
Of the other stories, to my mind only one comes anywhere close to Kelly’s offering and that is Expectations at Canterwood. While I found the story to drag on and on at certain points, it is saved by the way in which the H and the h help one another see their lives from an alternative perspective - and by a romance that is more than skin deep, full of warmth and mutual support.
A Season for Hope left me more in the cold. A man who appears to have made his fortune at the expense of slaves? Two young men travel to Jamaica, penniless, to work on a plantation and only a few years later the H returns to England, very wealthy? With only a mention of him working hard and investing wisely? And, as an almost aside, mention of the “workers” on the plantation. This doesn’t gel with me in a Christmas tale.
The final story, Lord Blakely’s Gift, has the odd touch that is appealing, but the author’s writing style is not for me. I found it clunky and difficult to read.

Lord Blakely's Gift

A chance meeting leads to two people caught between the feud of their families. This is a really cute story that has some funny moments. I couldn't help but cheer them on, hoping that their families could find a way to heal.

A Season of Hope

Christmas is a tough time of year when a loved one is no longer around. This particular year the spirit of Christmas was in short supply. The family was out of funds and a miserly neighbor demanded repayment for clothing destroyed by a goat. This sets the tone of the story. A miracle happens when a childhood friend comes to call. The characters are interest and very forgiving. It reminded me that hearts can change and hope found in the middle of trials.

Christmas by the Sea

Carla Kelly writes regency that is not your typical book of the ton. She writes about ordinary people doing their best during the time period. I love it! This story did not disappoint. It highlighted the different social status between men and women. It highlighted the magic of Christmas with a mysterious man known as Paul.

Expectations at Canterwood>

This story was fun to read but at the same time brought tears to my eyes. Marina has often been cast aside for having opinions and spectacles. The misunderstandings and resolution are well worth the time to read.

Overall I highly recommend this collection. The characters and stories are all well done. I listened to the story and the narrator did a great job.

4.5 stars!

I so enjoyed this collection of Christmas regency stories! Each story was unique and sweet, the romance both adorable and lighthearted. I loved reading these as short stories because the tension or issues were easily resolved; the problems never lingered for long.

I will say that Christmas By the Sea by Carla Kelly was the most unique out of the four stories seeing as it wasn’t so much a love story as it was a family story (and I really appreciated that aspect) but unfortunately the writing style was a little confusing and hard to understand at times. Perhaps it was just me and I was reading it too fast, so maybe I need to go back and revisit the story. I adored the setting and plot :)

My favorite was probably A Season of Hope by Sian Ann Bessey because not only was it a sweet love story, but it also had a Scrooge-like character, someone who was misunderstood and in need of healing. I was almost brought to tears. Plus I loved Giles 💛

Expectations at Canterwood by Krista Lynne Jensen almost felt like a full length novel, and though I’m not a fan of the miscommunication trope, I thought the romance unfurled so naturally in such a short span of time. I couldn’t help but love Richard and Marina.

And then sweet Lord Blakely’s Gift by Anneka R. Walker…I so enjoyed the story with Romeo and Juliet undertones. Miss Hunt was a dear and Lord Blakely was quite gallant; I loved how they brought the best out in each other. I also loved the goat and grandmother!!

Anywho, I’d definitely recommend this book 💛

It was easy to fall into these stories and devour them! I loved the theme of hopefulness even in troubling circumstances, and it was inspiring to see how the miracles of the Christmas season came to pass in the lives of the characters. I wouldn't be able to choose a favorite among the stories as I enjoyed them all and it's was a special pleasure to have a collection of stories from a variety of my favorite authors! These novella collections have become something I look forward to reading every year, and they are also perfect for re-reading!

The Miracle of Christmas

A Hopeful Christmas by Krista Jensen, Carla Kelly, Sian Ann Bessey, and Anneka Walker is a lovely anthology of romantic and spiritual Christmas stories.

The anthology is composed of four novellas: Lord Blakely's Gift by Anneka Walker, A Season of Hope by Sian Ann Bessey, Christmas by the Sea by Carla Kelly, and Expectations at Canterwood by Krista Jensen.

I am a huge fan of Carla Kelly and would not miss reading one of her royal navy stories. I was also curious to read the other new-to-me authors that share this book with her.

In Christmas by the Sea, once more, Carla Kelly brings the heart-wrenching struggles of the royal navy families during the Napoleon Wars. I love that she focuses on those left behind. The silent heroes that kept their families together while their loved ones soldiered far away.

She has an exquisite talent for creating characters that grab your heart and don't let it go, way after the story is finished.

Lord Blakely's story has a hint of Romeo and Juliet. Two young people finding themselves in love but conflicted about betraying their family wishes. It was sweet, romantic, and focused on Christmas's real meaning (helping others and spreading kindness).

A Season of Hope is a lovely childhood friends-to-lovers story. It was full of compassion, goodwill, and it filled my heart with Christmas cheer. It features an energetic boy and his very naughty goat.

Last but not least, Expectations at Canterwood features a bespectacled spinster trying to survive a house party while dodging her marriage obsessed mom (she strongly reminded me of Mrs. Bennet) and trying to avoid falling in love with her charming host.

A Hopeful Christmas is a lovely anthology of sweet and inspirational stories perfect for celebrating the season. I will be looking for other books by these authors.

Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is one of my favorite types of books. I love the way it has 4 stories. All are short, around 80 pages. They all are by some of my favorite authors. And they’re all about Christmas. I need a little Christmas all year this year!

Lord Blakely’s Gift by Anneka Walker begins the book. And it’s a great beginning. I really liked the main character, Ivy, in this one. She is brave and courageous. She goes to stay with her grandmother for Christmas. But she’s unwanted. And in a town her father hates. I loved the way she met Lord Blakely, covered in goat’s milk.

The two of them have a mystery to solve. Who does the purse Ivy found belong to? I loved the way this brought them together, two people who should have been enemies. And Lord Blakely changes as a result. This one was great!

Next up is A Season of Hope by Sian Ann Bessey. I thought it was kind of funny that this one also featured a goat. This goat is the bane of Amelia’s existence. He keeps getting out and eating Mr Cunningham’s shirts. Then Amelia’s mother has to pay for them. Something they can’t afford.

Phillip comes home to find Amelia’s family’s situation. A situation he can’t abide, as he feels he’s responsible for their poor fortune. I loved the way he brings light to Amelia’s and her family’s lives. This one just made me happy!

Then there’s Carla Kelly’s Christmas by The Sea. This one’s a bit different than the rest. It’s a story of a couple who are already married. Will and Meg’s story was cute and filled with miracles. The reader only sees the story through Will’s eyes. The author did a really great job making this one work with just the one point of view.

I loved Will and Meg, as well as their adorable children. Will’s family were not my favorite people. But it all worked out in the end.

Krista Lynne Jensen’s Expectations at Canterwood finishes the book. I really liked Marina in this one. Her mother has decided she’s an old maid and wants to marry her off. So they go to a house party in honor of Richard. The way these two met was funny. Full of mischief and misunderstandings. Marina is the kind of woman who cares for children and that plays a big role in the story. It’s great!

And Richard…he’s a great guy. I loved the way he wants to follow his heart and his dreams. Even though, he’s unsure of how things will work out.

If you love Christmas books, make sure to grab a copy of this one!

I was sent a copy of A Hopeful Christmas as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

A Hopeful Christmas is a collection of four regency romance Christmas stories that will warm your heart! It doesn't seem like we're only two months away from Christmas, but these stories will definitely get you in the holiday spirit.

In Lord Blakely's Gift, Miss Ivy Hunt goes to visit her sick grandmother and finds a lost coin purse. She joins with the mysterious Lord B. to find the owner---and finds herself losing her heart to the surprisingly sweet Lord B. A story of old wounds and new beginnings.

In A Season of Hope, Amelia's family is dealing with the loss of their father and brother. Christmas is just around the corner and they have no money for the holiday. But when Philip returns home from abroad, he brings the Christmas spirit with him. I really enjoyed this tender love story!

Christmas By the Sea is a true Carla Kelly storytelling. This author just has a way with words that sucks you in and makes you feel as if you were right there with the characters! I love how real all of her characters seem and this little family's story is so tender.

In Expectations at Canterwood, we have a case of mistaken identity that makes for a charming story! I loved how Richard and Marina really complemented each other and their love story was so sigh-worthy. I really enjoyed this one. Some really great moments on their journey to love.

All four of these heartwarming stories make great additions to your holiday reading. Don't miss this collection!

Romance, clean, period; Novella collection
Beautiful Christmas novella collection. This grouping was very well done. The authors were so varied in their perspectives, themes, and story lines. I loved Carla K.'s novella in particular, as it truly was so different from the others, with a family situation that was very different, and so compelling. However that being said, all the novellas were very strong. Oftentimes in a collection, I find a shorter length, one or two of the novellas feels incomplete, or choppy. This collection really was very beautifully done by all of the authors. This is one I know I will re-read in Holiday seasons to come. Plus, beautiful cover!

I'll post individual reviews of each story—written at the conclusion of each—and then sum it all up with some general thoughts at the end.

Lord Blakely's Gift, by Anneka R. Walker

I actually thought this was really sweet. The writing flowed well, the characters were relatable and likeable, and I was happy to see everyone get their happily-ever-after. Some of the changes of heart felt a little miraculous, but then they're supposed to be. Personally, I would have been happier to have focused more of Christmas miracles and less on "pray for your Christmas miracles" and all the other sundry God bits. But this is from a Christian publisher. So, it is what it is and that's 100% just personal preference, not quality related. Lord Blakeley's Gift is a nice Christmas novella.

A Season Of Hope, by Sian Ann Bessey

I generally enjoyed this. I thought it was generally well written and very sweet, with likeable characters. I liked it so long as I ignore one thing. I have a large qualm with a small part of the story.

The story is set in 1816 and it's stated that Philip had spent the previous 5 years working on his uncle's sugar plantation in the West Indies. It's stated that he worked hard, invested well, and returned wealthy. Here's the thing, I'm no historian (so, I keep hoping I'm missing some knowledge that would make this untrue), but slavery wasn't abolished until 1834 in the West Indies (and even then many previously enslaved peoples weren't functionally free for several years past that, what with the forced apprenticeships and such). The story refers to the plantation's "workers" more than once.

My issue is how effectively this language obscures the fact that Philip almost certainly must have spent the last 5 years actively participating in the enslavement of other human beings. This is not at all engaged in the story. In fact, I don't think the reader is even supposed to notice it at all. But I have a hard time imagining both the plantation's man with the whip and the good son/respectable hero being the same person. Honestly, this just overshadowed the whole story for me.

Christmas By The Sea, by Carla Kelly

I'm of two minds about this story. The writing is very good and I really liked that this is a story about an established married couple, with children. The vast majority of Regency Romances are about people falling in love. I truly appreciated a devoted husband and wife romance. I also found the difficulties of a marriage between people of different social statuses interesting. It made for engaging conflict. But I also found the eventual events super predictable and sadly sappy. I enjoyed the buildup significantly more than the climax.

Expectations At CanterWood, by Krista Lynne Jensen

I liked this last story quite a bit. I enjoyed Marina's wit and the realities of Richard's unnamed, but present PTSD. I also appreciated that this story was notably less religious than the previous stories. It did feel as if there might be a previous story or book preceding it (Julia and the Vicar's romance) and I'd have appreciated knowing that. But all in all enjoyable, with nice writing, and a bevy of fun side characters.

***

Looking at this collection as a whole, I liked it more than I expected to. I appreciated that these stories were long enough to allow for robust plot development, even if not full book length.

Regency romance, clean Regency romance at that, isn't a favorite genre of mine. Plus, I largely avoid explicitly Christian stories if I can (any religion, really). As I mentioned above, this is from a Christian press. So, I knew going in there would be no avoiding God. I admittedly went in with some trepidation. Luckily, I found the Regency settings charming and none of the stories proselytizes too strongly (and the last almost none at all). So, while I noticed everyone's devotion to The Spirit, I wasn't put off by any of it. I'd read any of these authors again.

This inspiring collection of Regency Christmas tales could not be better named; A Hopeful Christmas was a beautiful anthology that was just the uplifting set of stories I needed right now. While it definitely put me in the mood for winter holidays, I found the messages and romances to be timeless and look forward to reading this book over and over again.

Lord Blakely's Gift by Anneka Walker 5 stars
I think I laughed the most reading this one. I absolutely adored the characters and their quirks which were super endearing to me. The meet cute and the goat! Yep, LOVED that! So original and just fun. The author did an incredible job establishing the relationship between Ivy and Curtis where we see them not only grow as individuals, but the why and the how they are a perfect match for one another.

A Season of Hope by Sian Ann Bessey 5 stars
I loved the heart of this story. Not only did I feel invested in the romance, but the whole family dynamic and message of forgiveness was uplifting and beautifully done. Amelia and Phillip were authentic and kind. I felt the chemistry between them and the way they genuinely cared for one another. Definitely a novella I'll reread.

Christmas by the Sea by Carla Kelly 4 stars
The romance element wasn't as strong in this story as it was focused more on a family and their Christmas miracles which was heartening and fit well with the book's overall message of hope. I didn't get into this one as much, but recognize it was very well written and the historical details were fantastic.

Expectations at Canterwood by Krista Lynne Jensen 5 stars
I unquestionably fell in love with Marina and Richard while reading this cute story. The author held my interest so wonderfully, I felt like I was right there at the Christmas house party. From their funny introduction to their budding romance, I was cheering the two on throughout the whole story. The build up to their first kiss and the sweet romantic moments between the two kept me smiling as much as Richard was caught smiling at Marina.

I positively enjoyed this anthology and highly recommend it. These Christmas collections are quickly becoming a favored tradition for me, and I look forward to them each year. I did receive an advance reader copy; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The cover is gorgeous and I loved this collection of heart-warming Christmas stories. I look forward each year to seeing which authors will be invited to contribute to the collection. I love collections because I can read a complete story in a short amount of time. I enjoyed all of the stories.

LORD BLAKELY’S GIFT by Anneka R. Walker--When Ivy Hunt visits her grandmother for a month it never entered her mind that she would become involved, in any way, with Lord Blakely of the neighboring estate. To further complicate matters, their families have been feuding for the past several generations and don't even acknowledge each other's presence.

What a memorable first meeting these two had! I liked seeing the change Ivy had on Lord Blakely as they visited his tenants while she tried to find the owner of a found purse. I loved Ivy's kind heart and how she treated everyone well. Her compassion helped Lord Blakely become a better person. I loved Lord Blakely's sister and would enjoy a story about her.

A SEASON OF HOPE by Sian Ann Bessey--Amelia Nesbitt's family's barely getting by since the death of her father, the vicar. Mr. Cunningham graciously allowed them to move into the old gamekeeper's cottage when the new vicar arrived. Things start to look up when her childhood friend Phillip Cunningham arrives after living in Jamaica.

I love childhood friends reconnect stories and Christmas stories, and this one combined both. I liked that the elder Mr. Cunningham had to spend time in the run-down cottage Amelia and her family lived in. They were kind to him even though he hadn't been very kind to them about the cottage or the goat that kept escaping his pen. It helped soften his heart which had been hardened over the years.

CHRISTMAS BY THE SEA by Carla Kelly--William Crenshaw is home for Christmas after being away for two years with the Royal Navy. Instead of having a quiet Christmas with his small family, and getting acquainted with the daughter who was a baby when he left, he has to deal with conniving siblings who think they know what's best for him and his family.

I thought this story had a mysterious element to it in the form of the "caretaker" Mr. Paul. I loved that Will and Meg had genuine love between them and were so kind to others. Inviting those with no family to their modest Christmas dinner showed true Christmas spirit. This story was a little different but I enjoyed it.

EXPECTATIONS AT CANTERWOOD by Krista Lynn Jensen--Marina is a spinster and is not looking forward to meeting a Lieutenant Stanhope at the house party she and her family are attending over the holidays. Can an embarrassing case of mistaken identity lead to love?

This fun story had me giggling within the first chapter. I love stories that take place at house parties because there are many events where the characters can spend time together and get to know each other better. In our time the mistaken identity would've been cleared up without any issues, but in Regency times, the rules of propriety caused additional issues.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher Covenant Communications. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.

A Hopeful Christmas: A Regency Romance Collection is another wonderful book that made me long for Christmas right now. Each story was well written and had such unique story lines. I especially loved this collection because I was already a fan of all of these authors who contributed to this book. I knew that I was in for a great read from each author.

The first book, Lord Blakely’s Gift, was a sweet and often times humorous story. I loved how these star crossed lovers changed the dynamics and history of two feuding families.

The second story, A Season of Hope, was a mixture of sadness, regret, forgiveness, and love. I loved how in the story Christmas time helped bring about a change and healing for many of the characters. I would have loved for this story to be even longer because of how delightful the characters were.

The third story, Christmas by the Sea, was about a family kept apart because of a war. The father comes home after two years away and tries to establish his ties with his family. The husband and wife love each other and despite a conniving act by close family members, a Christmas Miracle can still happen.

The fourth book, Expectations at Canterwood, completely stole my heart. The story of a spinster, mistaken identities, and a rich and touching storyline make this a favorite in this collection. The connection between the two main characters was real and deep. The healing that takes place after many years of suffering was heartwarming.

This collection is another winner for Covenant, with lovely stories, a gorgeous cover, and characters you'll remember long after you read them. This book is a must-buy for Regency lovers and is perfect for gift giving this Christmas.

This is a wonderful collection of Regency Christmas novellas. Hope, miracles and love can transform anyone but it seems especially magical at Christmas.

Each of these authors are well versed in the Regency world.

-Lord Blakely’s Gift by Anneka Walker - Ivy’s father refuses to visit his mother and his ancestral home because of a fall out from something. Ivy doesn’t know the particulars and she loves Christmas at home but she sacrifices her beloved holiday at home to visit her sickly grandmother, who isn’t long for the world. Ivy comes across a handsome gentleman when she falls into mud..., a Lord B, but learns it is Lord Blakely and that they can’t be friends. A little Romeo and Juliet storyline.

-A Season IG Hope by Sian Ann Bessy - Amelia’s mother and young brother have fallen on hard times since her father, the local vicar, passed away. It doesn’t help that their goat escapes and fancies Mr. Cunningham’s dress shirts. He sends a missive that they need to reimburse him in full by Christmas, an impossible task. Mr. Cunningham’s son returns after years away and has fond memories of Amelia’s family. He sets out to help them improve their circumstances.

-Christmas By The Sea by Carla Kelly - this was interesting as it was from the POV of a married man. He’s away at sea for years and returns early. He’s a stranger to his children and gets a black eye by his 2 yr old daughter 😅 They all have to reacquaint themselves. Troublesome relatives, an impending move and a stranger with a touch of magic fill their holiday season.

-Expectations at Canterwood by Krista Lynne Jensen - Marina travels with her family to a house party with expectations to attend to Lieutenant Stanhope. Only he’s round, old and apparently married...as she’s cursing her misfortunes in the garden she gets caught in a branch and a stable hand overhears. Only it turns out he isn’t a stable hand.

Of the stories, I think Jensen’s was my favorite.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book of Christmastime short stories. Each story was well written and had a satisfying ending. All of the stories fit in with each other in the sense that they were in the same time period and none felt drastically different from the others. This is a great Regency era book to get you in mood for Christmas.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion.

This is a charming collection of four Regency romances set over Christmas. Each one was a delight in different ways. I love these shorter stories with their simpler plots.

This is a collection of four short Christmas love stories. They're each short and sweet. I liked the first and third story best. Here are some quotes I liked:

Lord Blakely's Gift
"'Miracles happen every day... But it isn't up to us to grant them, now, is it? All we can do is ask and believe' (p. 23)."

"'Both of us coming here as if we know anything about caring for the sick. I do know a little, but I hardly know one poultice from another. And you, a titled gentleman. It seems rather silly' (p. 25)."

"'Will our families be upset by us working together to help someone in need?'... 'One more day cannot hurt. It's not as if we are courting' (p. 26)."

"After three days of crossing paths, she felt she saw more good in him than he did in himself. If only he were not a Blakely and she not a Hunt (p. 27)."

"What would it take to make Grandmother warm to her? (p. 32)"

"She would never forget her trip to Amorwich or this moment when a man blessed an entire family with his generosity. Never had Curtis ever given so much money away. Oddly enough, he did not miss any of it. And not because he had plenty but because he knew the Clarks' dire need. That little boy had prayed with his mother for money, and God had seen fit to use Curtis as the answer (p. 35)."

"'I was nothing like my father. I didn't deserve to inherit his life, nor should I pretend to be him' (p. 36)."

"'If God wanted me to be like Julia, He would have made me her. I have my own path to carve in life, using the gifts only I can discover' (p. 37)."

"'So you don't think I need to be my father to be important?' (p. 37)"

"'Miss Hunt, it has been a privilege to know you. To be worthy of you must be the greatest endeavor a man could seek.'... He needed her light, warmth, and kiss (p. 38)."

"'It helps to marry a special person and not a difficult one.' 'Sounds simple when you put it that way' (p. 40)."

"After twenty-six years of living however he pleased, he now had the desire to understand God's will for him (p. 41)."

"As protective as he was of his mother, he could not have allowed her to verbally injure Miss Hunt in any way (p. 47)."

"'However much you might be displeased by it, the invitation has been extended, and I do believe we should honor it. Miss Hunt has not wronged the family in any way. She is only passing through the area, and her presence can do no harm unless we allow it' (p. 51)."

"'You seem different now from when we first met. You smile a great deal more.' 'Your cheerfulness is contagious.' Dare he admit she was the reason he smiled (p. 63)?"

"'Perhaps I should accompany you to the House of Lords for the next session of Parliament... It's a little more intimidating than a ballroom' (p. 64)."

"'You have such confidence in me. Why?' He took both of her hands in his and spun her around until they had switched sides in the line. 'I have seen a glimpse of your heart' (p. 64)."

"'Miss Hunt is an exceptional young lady. She has done more to heal the rift between our two families than anyone else has int he last twenty-five years. The entire community of Amorwich has had to choose sides or tiptoe around the situation for just as long. You don't live here, so you don't have to suffer along with the rest of us. I don't expect you to care. But you need to know your daughter is a credit to you. I suggest you remember that when you choose how you handle this' (p. 69)."

"'You've brought a glimmer of light to Ravencross. And not just because you opened my drapes' (p. 73)."

"'You aren't going to die?' 'I will someday, but not today. What about you? What will you live for?'... 'I will go to London, and if I am fortunate, I will marry. And I will look back on this time and think how silly I was to think a lost miser purse was worth getting between two feuding families' (p. 74)."

"'Your grandmother gave this to me as our wedding gift. It was part of his prize money for aiding in the capture of a Spanish cargo ship after the Battle of Manila, during the Seven Years' War. He wanted me to spend it all on myself. Not all his fortune was made in farming, you know... We saved this last bit for a time of need, but we always had more than enough' (p. 75)."

"'Your love is the only gift I want' (p. 83)."

A Season of Hope
"'After all this time, you considered it unnecessary to write to inform me of your intention to return, did you?' 'I have discovered letters traveling between the West Indies and England are as often lost as they are delivered' (p. 109)."

"'What would your father say?... What did he teach you?' Why was it suddenly so hard to recite the words she'd memorized at her father's knee? 'Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you' (p. 115)."

"She never wanted to feel that numbing cold again, but Philip's embrace was another matter entirely (p. 143)."

"'I believe Christmas Eve is the perfect time for an extra measure of hope' (p. 162)."

"'I do not know quite how it occurred, but I have come to realize I am falling desperately in love with my best friend's sister' (p. 168)."

"'I think perhaps my heart has always belonged to you... I simply needed to come home to discover it' (p. 169)."

"Joy filled Amelia as she threaded her arms around his neck. 'Happy Christmas, Philip,' she said (p. 169)."

Christmas By the Sea
"'Aye, sweetheart. Joshua Crenshaw, age thirty-six, still with all my hair and other accessories, requesting and requiring permission to climb into bed with you. We made a quicker voyage than expected. Captain Barlow was certain we would not make port until 1812, but here I am... In fact, our profane captain declared our rapid transit a miracle' (p. 179)."

"'He doesn't have a bed of his own, so he sleeps with me when he is in port' (p. 180)."

"'It's good to have you back, but we do have to get used to each other again, don't we?' (p. 183)"

"'I don't fear you, Papa... What I do is miss you' (p. 185)."

"'Will I be able to see the ocean from that office?' 'Aye, husband. Kiss me again, and fortify me against the arrival of your sister.' He happily obliged, aware that as soon as he got rid of his relatives, this would become an excellent Christmas (p. 193)."

"'We did what was best for you and your children.'... 'You have no idea what is best for us' (p. 197)."

"His children needed him. His self-sufficient, resilient children, who never knew when he would fetch port and didn't know him as well as he would have liked, needed him. All the distress of the day's misadventure left his shoulders. What did it matter that he was about to lose a significant amount of his prize money to a house in Paignton no one except his brother and sister wanted (p. 207)?"

"He had everything he wanted: an excellent wife and mother to his so-far three children; three distinctively individual little ones; and work that left him depleted, rethinking decisions and wishing for more skill and knowledge, but also firm in the certainty that every day he did all the good he could for others. He was blessed beyond measure. The thought humbled him as nothing else could have. And what better moment to consider his blessings than Christmastime? You, Sir, who made the lame to walk and the blind to see, he thought with gratitude. You, Sir, are the Great Physician. Please always be a lamp unto my feet or, maybe more needful for me, a lamp unto my hands (p. 218)."

"Perhaps he should warn Mr. Paul. 'There will also be an old gunnery sergeant and the widow of a ship's carpenter, sir. Megs likes to invite people who might otherwise be alone. Her father, may he rest in peace, gave her a list a few years ago of former shipmates and widows who have fallen on hard times, whether through the loss of loved ones or penury. She likes to help them' (p. 219)."

"'You let me unload family burdens on you. It's a physician's skill I continue to work on' (p. 221)."

"'Papa, that's quite a scar on your cheek... Are you maimed?'... 'Papa's too handsome to be called maimed' (p. 227)."

"'Happy Christmas, Mrs. Crenshaw. My, but your hair is a mess.'... 'That's entirely your fault, and you know it... Happy Christmas to you, my love' (p. 229)."

"Why are you doing this?... I'm just a surgeon (p. 237)."

"'He's a good un, and don't any of you lubbers forget' (p. 239)."

"He couldn't define or explain it, except that he felt whole this morning. He wanted the feeling to last. A glance at Margaret... further convinced Josh that his wife already knew more about grace than most, by the way she lived her life doing good, even with modest means, because that was all she had. Hers was not a life of luxury... Rather, it was a life well-lived. He also understood for the first time that the size of the deed wasn't important... Megs Crenshaw did the small deed: the mittens last night to Mrs. Colyer; some of the leftovers to Gunnery Sergeant Boyce, who was not in straitened circumstances but who was no cook; the extra sandwich to the worker last week who cleaned a drain; words of kindness to all and sundry. He could only imagine all Megs did when he wasn't around, which was too often, but that was war (p. 241)."

"'I was tasked with finding the right people for this house in Salcombe... The key is under the flowerpot' (p. 244)."

"'I doubt Mr. Paul knows the half of what Mama does all year for others. She's so quiet about it' (p. 247)."

"'Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares' (p. 249)."

"'It should come as no surprise to you, my darling, that I find myself increasing. We did make rather merry over Christmas, didn't we? Mid-September should find me in confinement. I'm happy for more space in our lovely house' (p. 254)."

Expectations at Canterwood
"'Miss Rowley, this is Lieutenant Richard Stanhope--Frank Stanhope's younger brother and guest of honor, newly returned from war (p. 278)."

"'Have you ever experienced a terrible thing so often you come to expect it? And when it doesn't happen, you convince yourself it must be happening anyway?' (p. 291)"

"'Now that I'm older, I do wish to paint the sea' (p. 295)."

"'Even honest questions can make others feel uncomfortable' (p. 302)."

"'No wonder I am timid of being worth anything to a man--if I have any worth at all' (p. 304)."

"'I may be horrid on my feet. Then our dance might seem interminable' (p. 317)."

"'What is this reputation?'... 'I am outspoken, my wit is too sharp, and my eyeglasses apparently mean I am spinsterly and wish only to read books and study sermons.' There. She's said it. Let him make of it what he would. 'Do you read books?'... 'Well, yes, but that's not the point. A young man with eyeglasses is instantly judged to be an academic, while a young lady is relegated to... the shelf... Why did you ask me for a second dance?'... 'That is simple... I do not find you spinsterly.' He led her through a series of turns, this time keeping her tucked close against him, and then ended with another spin... 'Be careful... You might ruin my reputation.' 'I believe that is the point, Miss Rowley' (p. 324)."

"'Is that why you kissed me? Because you feel sorry for me?'... 'No, my darling. Because I see how brave you are' (p. 348)."

"'I can't help but wonder if the life of a horse breeder's wife would be a happier circumstance for a certain bespectacled young lady than that of a military wife' (p. 351)."

"She wanted to be angry, wanted to scream, but oh, she wanted to be held (p. 355)."

"'She did not ask me to fall in love with you... And you cannot stop me, my darling. You cannot run for cover, and you cannot blast me away... Believe in me, Marina. Please believe in me' (p. 355)."

"'Sometimes all a body needs is someone to believe in him' (p. 356)."

"'Despite these little miracles'--he touched her eyeglass frames with a tip of his finger--'that allow her to see... Her beauty is just there looking out. Her spirit? I can't fathom the emptiness of this house party were she not alive and here and reminding me what enduring all the madness of war was for. Because that is what she does. She reminds me what to live for. What to fight for. She is life' (p. 357)."

This was a fun, relaxing read. I loved how the stories differed and each had an entertaining value. The first two stories were my favorites. I loved how they also both used the same animal to add humor to the story, but in different ways. All of the stories were clean, easy-to-read, easy-to-get-into. It's something that I would reread in the future. The characters were engaging and stood out in the Regency genre. I would recommend reading it.

Please note that I received a free copy to review, however, this is my honest opinion.
