Summer is back in Boston, bringing with it the anniversary of a protest that turned into a massacre. It’s a somber occasion, but one that blends into the sea of police brutality incidents across the country for Agent Luis Gomes – until his partner, State Police Detective Donovan Carey, is accused of a terrible crime.
Donovan knows he was nowhere near the crime, but eyewitness testimony is conflicting and unreliable. His own agency is desperate to be seen doing the right thing after a string of scandals, and is more concerned about regaining public trust than about facts.
Luis is assigned to investigate the case. Can he put aside his love for Donovan and find out what really happened? And when he does, will he be able to hold onto the principles he’s believed in since childhood?
Prodigal includes discussion of police brutality and of Bostonians rioting, which has been a popular pastime since the late 17th century.
J J. V. Speyer writes LGBTQ+ romance novels heavily flavored with suspense, mystery, and adventure. She has lived in upstate New York and rural Catalonia before making the greater Boston, Massachusetts area her permanent home. She currently lives just south of Boston in a house old enough to remember when her town was a tavern community with a farming problem.
J. V. finds most of her inspiration from music. Her tastes run the gamut from traditional to industrial and back again. When not writing she is a baseball fan, a hockey mom, and a devotee of all things weird and creepy about New England.
This book has pretty every issue Americans have faced for decades. It’s courageous to write so profoundly about hot topics such as police brutality, white supremacy, gay rights, etc.
As it wasn’t enough that Luis had to face the evilness of his biological father Carlos, now Donovan has to face the accusations and possible suspension from a ten year old murder.
It’s the ten years anniversary of the police brutality riots of at the Government Center. Donovan remembers, but wasn’t in the vicinity where protesters were killed. In fact, he was aiding protestors at the time. He had a different impression about what took place at first but as time went on he saw the bigotry that existed in the police department. Now, he faces the full impact of bigotry and corruption.
As it doesn’t look good for Donovan, Luis is assigned to investigate the case. Luis once again uses his paranormal abilities to gain some very needed information that could possibly save Donovan.
Both Luis and Donovan are not new to dealing with abusive father’s but how far will father’s go to save themselves and destroy their son’s?
J. V. Speyer doesn’t hesitate to cover some very sensitive subjects in “Prodigal”: gay rights, bigotry, police brutality, corruption, deceit and abuse.
Speyer still delivers Luis’ physic ability, without overuse, as he very much has to use his ability in the investigation. He still calls on the noose wearing, rum drinking, ghost Captain Lightfoot for advice.
As for Luis and Donovan’s relationship, it has very much improved with this novel. Luis is going to do everything in his power to keep Donovan safe and secure.
“Prodigal” is another page-turner for me and I’m looking forward to the next installment from the talented J.V. Speyer!
At this point in the series, I am so completely, totally, one hundred percent invested in Luis and Donovan that I’m almost terrified to find out what kinds of challenges they’ll be facing next, and this book definitely put them through the wringer. This isn’t a lighthearted or easy read, but it is a deeply rewarding one, as Luis and Donovan are caught up in the protests sweeping Boston, with Donovan under suspicion and Luis working to clear his name and to get justice, while coming up against issues like police brutality, institutionalized homophobia, racism, and corruption. I love the way Luis’s supernatural abilities allow him to build unconventional relationships (I’m looking at the ghost of a certain deceased highwayman here, in particular) and how he’s increasingly getting better at drawing on them in ways that help him, and Donovan. I love that Luis and Donovan’s relationship is able to withstand so much, and I really just love them. Well worth a read.
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow! This was fantastic!! There are so many hot topics that are sensitive, but the author took them on and did a wonderful job!! Luis must help Donovan!! Donovan has been accused of a crime and Luis has to work to clear him. I love how Luis calls upon Captain Lightfoot for advice! I love how Luis and Donovan’s relationship has improved. This was captivating, kept me turning the pages! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.
I just love this series. I can't wait to read the next book. Will Luis and Donovan ever get any peace. I really enjoy how the author brings up so many issues facing America from police brutality and corruption, bigotry, gay rights, and other issues throughout this series. I am thoroughly enjoying the series which tells a story rather than being based on sex as a lot of gay stories involve. I received this book as an Advanced Readers Copy.
Jaye continued to put me in awe of her writing, riots, bigotry, angst, both fathers don’t care that they’ve hurt their sons, humour love Captain Lightfoot and I do love both Donovan and Luis their relationship continued to be strong. Can’t wait to read Phoenix.
I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book for my honest opinions of which I’m under no obligation to do so. I absolutely recommend this book.
