A sudden spate of gruesome killings plagues a sleepy mountain town. The locals cower and gossip in hushed tones, sure that the murders are the handiwork of malevolent, otherworldly creatures. The deaths, however, coincide with the long-delayed homecoming of twin brothers – one, the lead singer in a band; and the other, a priest. Is it mere coincidence? Or could the twins have brought with them an unspeakable evil?

Final Rating = 4.5 Stars Total score = 23 (5 points = 1 star)
1. Art = 5/5 Sir Roland's art is sharp and crisp, aptly colored to the theme, and the panels are easy to follow.
2. Premise 4/5 "A sudden spike of gruesome killings plagues the sleepy mountain town of Liliw, Laguna as twin brothers Banahaw and Cristobal return to their home town."
After going through Trese's urban metropolis, I love how Carnal takes me back to a more quiet, rural setting. It's where Pinoy myths are still alive in the stories of elders after all.
3. Plot 5 / 5 The pacing is just amazing. The book is short but packs enough twists at the end to satisfy you while still leaving you wanting for more.
It reminds me of Netflix's Midnight Mass and Mallari, which are both my faves in horror.
4. Characters 4/5 I love the characterization done especially to the twins, and their polar opposite relationship to their father. But I was surpried to find Lola Inang who had a much larger role in the prequel Cautionary Tales to have an almost extra role here. But it's fine, just hoping she'll get more page time in the sequel. Then you have Tess which is just ❤️
5. Worldbuilding 5/5 I LOVE the crafting of this world by Ms. Bambi. It's so rich in lore, in local folklore, the illustrated tidbits about the monsters, the Occhio del Dio monster origin and the Sipay! OMG the Sipay!
I grew up in Quezon province being told by my dad that the Sipay will kidnap me and put me in a sack if I don't go home on time. And all that time, I formed an image of a dirty man carrying a sack. Not a monster, but just a man. And as an adult, I thought my dad just invented the Sipay because I have never seen it featured in any medium--not until now! So thank you, Ms. Bambi, for bringing life to this super obscure creature from my childhood in all it's gory bits.
Just curious: Why did the Sipay show up though? Was it the drugs and Inang's stories that caused it? I didn't see it in town when the twins returned.
