Neuropsychologist Offers Hope to Those Struggling with Depression
As a board-certified neuropsychologist, Dr. Michelle Bengtson sees the devastation of depression. Early on, she practiced the most effective treatments and prescribed them for her clients. But when she experienced depression herself, she found that the treatments she had recommended were lacking. Her experience showed her the missing component in treating depression.
In "Hope Prevails," Dr. Bengtson writes with deep compassion, blending her training and faith, to offer readers a hope grounded in God's love and grace. She helps readers understand what depression is, how it affects them spiritually, and what, by God's grace, it cannot do. The result is an approach that offers the hope of release, not just the management of symptoms.
For those who struggle with depression and those who want to help them, "Hope Prevails" offers hope for the future.

Dr. Bengtson is not only a neuropsychologist, but has also suffered from depression. She noticed that doctors rarely included the spiritual aspect of healing when dealing with a patient's depression. Since this played a huge part in her recovery, she wrote a book so that others could benefit from her journey. There are questions, prayers, and playlists at the end of each chapter that help make the chapter relevant and offer hope.

Pros:
I loved the cover. It's beautiful and calming. The author has a doctor's background as well as personal experience, something that all of us want when we go to talk to someone about our experiences and problems with depression. She is honest and open about her own experiences and how they shaped her. The last chapter shares some insights that deal with all forms of help, such as medication, therapy, health, etc. So the book isn't just touching on the spiritual aspect, but also the physical. The book is well written and the author shares stories and personal experiences to make it interesting to read.

Cons:
These are my feelings, so in no way should take away from what the author is trying to accomplish. I truly hope this book is what others will find extremely helpful.

It felt to me like the author was saying that a spiritual need is the basis of all depression and if we can get that aspect inline correctly that the rest of our depression issues will go away and we can "recover". This wasn't something that I could relate to at all. I clung to God the most and felt close to Him when in my darkest moments. I did not ever feel like the devil was whispering lies in my ears. My symptoms were mostly physical and while I knew that I was blessed and had a great life, I felt like my brain fog was not allowing me to enjoy it. This isn't the direction of the book at all. And so reading it was not helpful and actually made me feel anger and frustration while reading. I read this with a friend who also suffers from depression and she experienced the same thing as I did. So my recommendation would be to read this book with the mind set that some of the things might not apply, but there are some great take-a ways if you want to read through everything to get to them.

I received this book free of charge from Revell Reads in exchange for my honest review.

This book is hands down amazing! I've read a few more than a dozen books on depression in the last year, as part of graduate seminary studies and wellness ministry work. 'Hope Prevails' is the first I've felt I can easily recommend to fellow Christ-followers walking the often dark journey through depression. Dr. Bengston's work grounds solid advice in Scripture and medical science, and her 'rx,' prayers and playlists at the end of each chapter give readers tangible things they can put into practice as they read to move forward.

Ever felt your world turn black? Depression settles in and unsettles you as it pulls the curtains on the world and everything simply turns black, taste black, feels black. It's so black you want a friend to bring you a flashlight to show you the way out...yet you don't have the energy to care or call. Been there?

So has Dr. Michelle Bengtson. Hope Prevails is her personal victory account and the magnificent lessons she learned as she traversed that black place called depression. Yes, she experienced that bright light - Jesus - as He walked with her into the light. The good news? She freely shares the lessons learned. Now that's where #HopePrevails for each one of us.

If you aren't dealing with depression now, one of your dear friends may be. I encourage you to get this book for yourself and every friend in need of a helping hand and a little light on their path. Shine it for them.

Inspirational, encouraging, uplifting and definitely a must read for everyone. This Bible Study can be used in a group setting or by an individual. The author provides Scripture and even a music playlist to accompany this great study. A great book to give as a gift, too.

Given my experience as a student with a MA in Counselling at a well-known seminary I was curious to see how Dr. Bengtson's new book would address the topic of depression. To be honest, I'm still unsure how I felt about the book.

The topic is timely. If people are truly honest with themselves and others, I doubt many would be unable to come up with at least one name of someone close who has battled depression and the books tackling the topic are as varied and broad as I've seen. At times, Hope Prevails reads like a self-help book offering musical playlists and prayers for the reader. At other times it reads more clinically discussing the roots of depression. Yet at other times the book turned deeply personal (almost oddly so given the transitions between sections). As a reader, I came out wondering if the book was having a slight identity crisis.

There were helpful elements within the text and Hope Prevails could function well as an introduction to the spiritual aspects of depression. Here too I was also disappointed. While Bengtson mentions the need fora holistic approach to health addressing the many areas mental health already considers standard treatments, these treatments felt more like a passing thought in the author's good intentions of looking at more spiritual causes. I could easily see how this message could be misconstrued to lessen a holistic approach to a more spiritually dominated one - an approach the church has been known to abuse in the past.

3 out of 5 stars

In her book Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey through Depression, Dr. Michelle Bengtson shared her insights into depression and its impact on lives based on over 20 years of experience working as a clinical neuropsychologist, treating those who struggle with depression. She wrote not only of her experiences as a doctor in her book, but also as a fellow struggler, as one who knows the depths of depression and its impact upon a life. As she walked with the reader, guiding them through her journey from depression to hope, she shared these same insights and scriptures that set her free with others. Now Dr.Bengtson has written a companion book to Hope Prevails. She has written the Hope Prevails Bible Study to be used as a tool to deepen our study into God’s Word and the hope He offers us individually, in a counseling setting, or in a group setting. Reading the book, Hope Prevails, gave me a better understanding of depression and how it affects a person’s entire being – mind, body, and soul. But it was when I worked through the Hope Prevails Bible Study, taking the time to really look inside my own heart and beliefs that I gained a greater understanding of how deep the spiritual roots of depression truly run. This Bible study helped reveal in my own life awareness that I am not immune to believing many of the lies of the enemy that keep me from truly seeing myself as God sees me. I needed to do the work contained in the pages of the Hope Prevails Bible Study to be set free from strongholds in my life that have held me captive for far too long. I truly believe that the truths from God’s Word that are presented in this Bible study can set you free as well. We all need hope!

In "Hope Prevails, Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey through Depression", Dr. Bengtson lays out a path through and out of the depression that holds so many of us captive. Having been there herself, she "gets" it! One thing she knows for sure is that it takes work to overcome it, and we must commit ourselves to that work. Now, in the companion "Hope Prevails Bible Study, Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey through Depression", she lends a hand to help us do that work. She leads us through thoughtful questions and the answers found in God's Word so that we can "pick up our beds and walk." We can do it! The Hope Prevails Bible Study can be used by itself, but the book and the Bible Study are so much better together!

Hope Prevails is a biblically sound "prescription" written by a doctor for those experiencing depression. The Scriptures are used extensively throughout the book making this a biblically based model for true healing, not just a management of the symptoms of depression.

As a neuropsychologist of more than 20 years Dr. Bengtson uses her training and experience to tell her about her struggle with debilitating depression and the story of how she was healed. She offers readers a light for their path through the darkness of depression.

Purpose: “Few books discuss what depression does to us on a spiritual level. That is the emphasis of this book. While I address what depression is, where it comes from, and ways to treat it. I will also share what it does to us spiritually and how that perpetuates the problem.” P. 16

Notable Quotes:

“Not until I realized how depression is perpetuated on a spiritual level and addressed the spiritual issues did I start to walk out of the valley.” P. 17

Michelle records statistics, “18.8 million American adults suffer from a depressive disorder… 350 million people globally live with depression.” P. 27 When I read her bibliography I realized that these quotes are a few years old.

“And I remember getting frustrated to the point of being angry when fellow Christians would quote Bible verses to try and make me feel better>. I felt like all they were doing was giving me platitudes, which in my mind, just proved to me they had no idea what I was going through.” P. 36

“Studies indicate that our thoughts affect our neurotransmitter production, which then directly influences our physical experience of a situation.” P. 43

“For many years I considered peace a nice word in a Christmas carol. Now I think of peace as an absence of worry, concern, or annoyance-a calm experience in both my mind and my heart… I suspect that if we could have peace in our hearts on our own, Jesus would not have left it with us as a gift.” (John 14.27) P. 93

“When we don’t appreciate our worth in Christ, many of our thoughts, attitudes, and actions run adrift, and depression has an open door to enter.” P. 123

“The ultimate goal of an unloving spirit is to keep us from receiving the fullness of God’s love.” P. 134

“God does not call us to a life of perfection, although for years I believed the lie that he wouldn’t love me if I weren’t perfect. He accepts us as we are but loves us too much to leave us that way.” P. 143

“Our thoughts must align with God’s truth in order for us to find freedom from whatever holds us prisoner.” P. 173

Hope Prevails is the first book that I have ever read about depression. I know nothing about depression. I have a few other books that I will be reviewing soon. Dr. Michelle Bengtson writes about her struggle with depression. As the book progresses she elaborates on her personal experience. I appreciate her transparency. Her vocation as a neuropsychologist did not prevent depression, nor did it help her much during her suffering.

If I understand correctly, Dr. Bengtson identifies that depression involves a spiritual struggle. She does not deny genetics, mental health, or the need for therapy and/or medication. However, she does insist that although depression may eventually evolve into a physical problem, it includes a spiritual problem and/or wrong thinking. I am not writing to debate her opinion, nor am I forcing her opinion on others. I am writing a book review. I found her writing to be interesting.

Throughout the book, Dr. Bengtson kept referring to the influence of the enemy (satan). I agree withe her suggestion that the enemy continuously tries to persuade us with lies about ourself and God. The book contained many Scriptures and application. Each chapter concludes with practical and biblical prescriptions, a prayer, and a recommended playlist (Songs that encouraged Dr. Bengtson.) I was pleased to read this book. I think that I will probably keep this book nearby to reference as needed. I plan to continue reading about depression.

In exchange for an honest review, Revell Reads (Baker Publishing Group) has provided me with a copy of Hope Prevails. I have written an honest review.

One of the aspects of blogging which I love is the way the lives of people intersect. God has brought friends into my life I would not have met otherwise, and along with them, their insight and their books.

One of these friends has been Dr. Michelle Bengston. I had the opportunity to review her first book, Hope Prevails, which you can read about here. Michelle is a neuropsychologist who had treated patients for years. Yet only in the midst of her own battle did she discover the missing component in treatment.

Being a woman who usually has a Bible Study workbook going, when asked to be a part of this launch team, I was grateful to be included. Hope Prevails Bible Study is a wonderful study for anyone who struggles with depression or has a loved one who struggles. This means it is pretty much for us all.

The study brings practical application which will encourage any reader. It is not a cure for depression as medication may be needed and one should always follow the recommendations made by their doctor.

But we need to always remember there is a spiritual component of our lives that must be addressed. This study does just that - focuses on our spiritual mindset.

Each chapter of this study will guide you in reading Scriptures and responding to questions. There are key thoughts and directives to help maintain a hope filled mindset throughout the day. Dr. Bengston has included a leader's guide making this book a wonderful resource for a group Bible Study.

The book is a gentle journey making one realize depression is common and we are not alone in this battle. There are chemical genetic, experiential, and spiritual contributors to this struggle. With the help of professionals and Scriptures, one can fight back from this journey and discover the joy and peace God intends.

This is an excellent Bible Study and resource for personal use for those who struggle with depression or have a loved one who struggles.

** I received an advanced reading copy of this book for the purpose of this review in exchange for my honest opinion. It was a privilege to read this book and do so.

Disclosure: I received Hope Prevails: Insights From a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson complimentary from Revell. Provided I give an honest Review.

While reading this book I found it awesome to finally read a book from an author who understands what depression and anxiety is about. I hate that she has gone through it, or that anyone has gone through it. It is best to have books on these subjects from folks who have gone through the same things. Because you know they know how to relate more to you.

I did find she was repetitive in a few chapters, to where I felt I thought I was rereading a chapter. Other than that I do love that she incorporates scriptures and talking about how God has helped her through her depression. This book would be great to do a weekly bible study with others, because at the end there are questions in the way you can discuss with your bible study group about what your answers were to the questions. Also my favorite thing at the end of each chapter she posts christian songs that have helped her throughout her depression and writing this book. Which I am going to of course go on Spotify and add all of these songs and make a happy playlist to see if it helps me out. I also love learning of new music and new christian music especially. They are always great to listen play to try and get your depressed self back up to cheery. I think this would be a great book to try if you go through any anxiety or depression, because it doesn't hurt to read a book and see if the author says something that just might click for you.

My own journey with depression was harrowing and drug-induced (you can read more about it on my blog). It took me about two years to recover from the side effects of opiate withdrawal and many of the coping mechanisms described in this book are ones I used. Had this book been published then, it would have been a blessing, an encouragement and a guide.

Part of the reassurance given by the book originates in the occupation of the author – a neuropsychologist – and the other part in Dr. Michelle Bengston having suffered first hand. She speaks from a place of knowledge and experience, it is a unique perspective. Her faith is the element I enjoyed most, Christianity is at the heart of this book and this faith-based approach is the structure upon which it is built. She in no way dismisses the conventional treatments but adds to them a spiritual dimension that resonates deeply with me,

Remembering how hard putting one foot in front of another was, I love the prescription of worship music and small acts at the end of each chapter. Kari Jobe’s albums played in our home constantly when I was in the grip of depression and continue to be a light when I need it.

I love this line: “In a depressed state, you may not feel treasured or even acceptable, but you are. While I’m not asking you to deny your feelings, I’m asking you to choose to believe the truth of God’s Word over your feelings.”

I highly recommend it to those who suffer from depression or wants to understand the mind of someone who feels depressed.

I believe this book is so needed today! There are many who struggle with depression today and I believe that this study along with her original book of the same title can be a great resource for anyone who finds himself/herself in the midst of or heading towards depression.

I love that Dr. Michelle does not discount other causes of depressions(chemical, genetic, secondary, and reactionary), but in recognizing those causes she also points out the spiritual element that goes hand in hand with those other causes. The spiritual root of depression cannot be ignored for those wanting to experience true freedom from depression. The approach to healing that is taught in this study is not a simple...pray this and you will be healed... but gives real actionable steps to healing, restoration, and a rediscovery of who you were created to be. Your illness does not in any way define you, "determine your worth, or dictate your destiny, or separate you from God."

Dr. Michelle walks you through 12 chapters which include resources to help you along the way at the end of each chapter such as: Key thoughts, music playlist suggestions, questions for reflection, and actionable steps.
This is a much-needed resource for the individual experiencing depression or those who know someone going through it. I would highly recommend this Bible Study.

Michelle, who is a renowned neuro-psychologist knows first-hand what dealing with depression looks like. Not only does she see it daily in her interactions with her patients but she has also battled with it in her own life. And out of that came the inspiring book “Hope Prevails: Insights From A Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression.” “Hope Prevails is a beautifully written book about what it means to have depression, how we can be healed from it, and who the healing comes from: God. And now a year later Michelle has come out with a companion study book to either go along with “Hope Prevails” or to be done as a stand alone study. One of her statements in the new book says this: “Both faith and fear carry equal weight and both demand our focus. Yet you get to choose which one will reign. Choosing faith over fear or doubt will have profoundly positive results.” Faith in God, and having hope are the two prevailing themes that can help us heal from depression. And Michelle’s new book/study helps us learn how to cultivate both. Her message is beautifully delivered and one that I believe everyone can greatly benefit from.

I chose to read this book for personal reasons, and I was blown away. The author's approach is compassionate, relatable, and yet convicting. She infused this book with scripture after scripture after scripture, further proof that God's Word will not return void. This book provides insights, encouragement, and healing. It also provides an honest, toe-stomping look at the lies we believe about ourselves and how they affect our behavior. Her ultimate premise is that depression is a tool, used by a very powerful enemy, to bring us down, separate us from God, and eventually destroy us. I love how she uses "steal, kill, and destroy," to show that the battle is real and it takes God-given strength to fight on every day. But through Christ, we know that victory is ours and "hope prevails."

I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with depression or anyone that loves someone battling depression. This book would also be useful to counselors, church staff members, and anyone else associated with providing mental health care/support.

An amazing book written by an amazing person! Dr. Michelle Bengtson discusses anxiety and depression and the way those diseases affect our lives and the lives of others. In this book, she reminds us that everyone is touched by depression and/or anxiety in some way. Whether ourselves or someone we know or don't know, this book can help. Dr. Bengston includes Scripture, music suggestions and ways to help with this journey. She writes from personal experience. I cried tears of sadness and then, tears of joy as I read the book because I, too, have suffered with this disease. I know there is hope, and this book is a true testimony that there is hope and help. Reading Hope Prevails will uplift and encourage you. I believe everyone should read this book.

Hope Prevails is a unique book in that it is written by a doctor who herself battled with depression. Dr.Michelle Bengston is a neuropsychologist who had treated patients for years but only in the midst of her own battle discovered the missing component in treatment. The book is beautiful and transparently written and includes Scriptures, prayers, and worship songs which the author found to be life giving and fill her with hope in the midst of her battle. This book is an encouraging read whether one suffers with anxiety or depression oneself or if one needs a tool to offer a family member or friend in their struggle. I highly recommend this book as it is truly unlike any other book on depression I have read. One will surely become assured that Hope truly does prevail!

Dr. Michelle Bengston understands that depression has physical, mental, and spiritual roots--and therefore one must use a multifaceted approach to healing. There are plenty of books that talk about the physical and mental roots of depression, with loads of advice for finding relief. Dr. Bengston's new Bible study guide walks the sufferer through actionable steps to seek spiritual healing and renewal as well. If you suffer from depression, or know someone who does, this book is for you. Dr. Bengston uses anecdotes (many from her own journey through depression) to capture the reader's attention, guided reading of scripture, memorization of promises, and play lists of songs to help the reader journey towards a cure (or, as I like to say, the Cure).

What an amazing companion to “Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey through Depression”! However, it doesn’t matter if you haven’t previously read “Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey through Depression”. The bible study is a stand-alone book. This thought-provoking book not only helps the reader learn the secrets to overcoming depression, it can also help the reader to be an overcomer in every aspect of life! It is a great resource for individual study or in a group setting. I highly recommend this book.

This Bible Study is just what the doctor ordered for those who suffer with depressioon or even just the blues. It is a transformational read for anyone who suffers from depression, has the blues, knows someone who suffers from depression, or even the professional who can use it as a tool. If you or someone you love has ever experienced a season of sadness and desolation, if you (or they) have ever felt hopeless and overwhelmed by life, you simply must read a new book published by Revell in 2016. It is appropriately entitled “Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey through Depression”, and was written by Dr. Michelle Bengtson. This book is NOT a textbook-like volume filled with the latest scientific studies and newly discovered “cures”, nor is it a memoir filled with all the details of one person’s struggles. Instead, this book is a combination of many things, and each one points toward the truth of God’s word on the subject.

First, “Hope Prevails” is interactive in ways that most non-fiction books are not. Three especially interactive features include:
- Each chapter contains a “doctor’s prescription” (“Your Rx”) which is simply a series of questions to ask yourself or steps for you to take to help in the healing process. Often this section contains suggested Bible verses to write on index cards and memorize.
- Each chapter also features a prayer, or blessing, that Dr. Bengtson prayed for her readers as she was writing. These prayers are beautiful, insightful, and reveal a deep understanding.
- Finally, my favorite portion of each chapter is the Recommended Playlist, which offers a handful of accordingly selected worship songs from popular artists of the past several years. Most of the songs can easily be found as videos online, and so you don’t need to purchase dozens of songs or albums to fully enjoy the benefits of this music.

Without question, I feel this book truly holds the power to help people heal. Or perhaps it is more correct to say that it points in the direction of the One who holds the power to heal. Dr. Bengtson writes with the compassion and understanding of a good friend, yet she also shares from the perspectives of a doctor and a person who has experienced depression herself. Therefore, she is in a unique and very special place to help. If you are feeling hopeless, don’t miss “Hope Prevails”.

I am grateful to have received a copy of this book from Revell Reads, free of charge, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Vulnerability is necessary to healing. When we’re honest with God it’s easier to move forward. Do you agree? First, we must believe that God is enough.

In Hope Prevails, Dr. Michelle Bengston tackles depression from the outside looking in. As a neuropsychologist, having walked through this battlefield, she determines to help us understand the spiritual battleground of depression.

“We are destroyed when the enemy knows more about the roots of our depression than we do” (Bengston, 49).

I appreciate her insight because she is both the doctor and the patient. The reader sees both sides of the journey and feels confident in the knowledge dispersed throughout the pages. As patients, we are treated with medication and mental exercises, but often our spirit remains untreated. This is where Dr. Bengston comes in. Her firsthand knowledge and experience is valuable.
Hope Prevails is biblically based. It offers insight while digging into the Bible to help further heal from the strongholds of depression.

My favorite parts of the book come at the end of each chapter where Dr. Bengston offers a prescription. These prescriptions are questions to further journal out your experience. She then offers a short prayer followed by a playlist of worship songs.

I would recommend this book to anyone suffering from depression who is tired of medication not working, tired of feeling empty, and tired of feeling lost. It’s a valuable gift to offer a family member if they suffer with depression and feelings of negative self-worth. Hope Prevails offers hope in Jesus.

On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, Hope Prevails by Dr. Michelle Bengtson is a whole pack of Listerine cool mint strips. The spike of flavor explodes on your tongue clearing out the clingy flavors of finished meals. Freshness restored.

[Free copy received. Opinions my own.]

Hope Prevails offers a glimpse of Depression from a medical expert who has personally dealt with the debilitating effects of Depression. Dr. Bengtson organized this book into 12 chapters that intuitively steps through the barriers and frustrations of Depression. At the end of each chapter, she gifts the reader with introspection exercises, a prayer, and a list of music.

Although I have never personally dealt with clinical Depression, I know many loved ones who have. For me, Depression is personal for the reason that so many loved ones deal with it. That's what prompted me to pick up Hope Prevails, but I walked away encouraged as well because my own life has sometimes lacked hope as well. Sometimes, Dr. Bengtson seemed too chipper for the serious topic that she was writing about, but on the flip side, it kept this book feeling light rather than exhausting.

I think Hope Prevails offers an easy-to-read opportunity to begin digging into the spiritual side of Depression.

This book is a powerful testimony seasoned with a generous dose of love for the author. My initial fear that it would be (i) a pitiable self-absorbed account and (ii) lame five point self-help quick fix were unfounded. As a serial book reviewer, I'd often pass them on to make space on my shelf for new titles; but this is a very special book and I'm wrestling to part with it. Most likely, it would end up on my shelf with what I regard to be the 6 star collection of books.

Bengtson authentically tells of her painful encounters with depression in her family members, her childhood and finally in her adult years. The amount of detail is tasteful and not once did I feel that she wanted attention to herself as a mighty victor; rather I sense her heart's desire to point the reader to God and cling upon him.

Do take time to read the tail end of each chapter, it is filled with the brilliant Rx ("doctor's prescription"), the ever sincere and empathetic prayer, and most interestingly, a recommended playlist of Christian music. What could make it better? Perhaps providing a spotify playlist link for us readers to not have to search each song individually?

As one well acquainted with depression's vice grip and perpetual hopelessness, I was thoroughly blessed by this labour of love. I heartily recommend this book - if you struggle with depression or would like to understand it better to reach out to someone you know who does.

There is something about reading a book and knowing that the author knows what she is talking about. When that author is a doctor and is not just sharing stories they have seen in their practice, but rather sharing her true and transparent struggle, well that just makes me sit back and read with a whole different perspective.

Having someone write about depression because they have walked those dark halls of life is one thing. But Dr. Bengtson writes about her depression that rose it's nasty head into her life all the while treating patients in her practice for this very same thing.

She not only is able to teach us what to do for it, she teaches us what to look for. Whether you have walked through depression, are walking through depression or know and love someone who is - this book is an insightful book to help tread those rough waters. And Dr. Bengtson shows us that through all of it, God's Hope will always prevail.

I received a digital copy of this book with no expectation in return. I chose to share my honest review of the book.

The best book I've read on what to do with depression and those affected by it. This woman is grounded in Scripture and couldn't stop writing about how helpful it was to meditate on the Bible, sing Christian songs, and take quiet time to be alone with our Father when she was suffering with depression (good advice for anyone in any situation). She also rounds this book out with a healthy dose of experience which makes her suggestions and advice easier to swallow than if she had just pounded you over the head with Bible verses. Her formal education and occupation is just the cherry on top of an amazingly Scriptural, helpful book that I am going to recommend to friends everywhere, and I've already bought a copy to give as a Christmas gift. Even if you aren't suffering with or wondering if you have depression, read this book. Even if you're always happy (which is hardly anyone I know) you should read this book. If you are a living, breathing human, read this book. Sooner or later, you or someone you love will be benefited by it.

A friend recommend this book to me and we read it at the same time to discuss it. From the very beginning I had reservations because of her use of bible verses out of context but continued reading to discuss with my friend. I do think the author has a point and it’s important to consider the spiritual side of depression and to find spiritual ways to cope with it. I liked the RX at the end of the chapters and created my own playlist with her suggested songs and copied out all the verses in a journal.

Beyond that I found the out of context use of scripture and the length of the book more frustrating than encouraging. By the end of it, my friend and I found her thoughts rambling and unhelpful and reading it became a burden.

Im glad I have my playlist and scripture journal to take away from it and have even shared those with others so the book was profitable to me in that sense

Most books talk about the most common contributors to depression (chemistry, genetics, experiences, etc.) but few books discuss the spiritual contributor to depression, that this one does. This book was written by a doctor, a mental health professional, with over 25 years of experience in mental health treating patients with issues like depression and anxiety, but who has also personally experienced depression, so she can speak to the issue from both a personal and professional perspective.

At the end of each chapter, she provides a prayer for the reader, thought provoking application questions to consider, and a recommended play list of music to encourage the reader.

For those who purchase the book, she also includes a link to a free chapter on her website for those who want to know how to help a depressed loved one.
