Maida Heatter is my favorite baking book author. This is the book that I suggest to people baking cookies for Christmas or for bake sales.

Wonderful collection of cookie styles for a home cook to create. Heatter strikes an ideal balance between the precision that baking requires and the freedom to innovate and tweak a flavor. If I have to limit myself to only one cookie book, this is it and has been so for ages.
