Just because you haven’t seen a ghost, it doesn’t mean they aren’t around. You can’t see germs either, but you know they exist everywhere. Besides, everybody has a ghost story or unexplained experience—yet no one wants to admit that they believe in spirits.
What if your life was turned upside down and you suddenly had the ability to see, hear and communicate with those on the other side? How would you handle the situation?
Distant Heart Sounds takes a look at what Morgan Cutler encounters after an unexpected near-death-experience leaves her with psychic abilities. As a 40-ish, skeptical, heard-it-all-before, metro Detroit emergency center nurse, Morgan believes she has seen just about everything in her 20+ years on the job, but then one day, she feels someone she cannot see.
The new Morgan opens herself to a relationship with a hunky doctor at the emergency center, who has some psychic ability as well. Romance, humor, mystery, and being connected to others bring peace and joy into her life.
But what happens when Morgan witnesses the evil inside one man’s heart? Some secrets are better left unseen.
Morgan is an experienced ER nurse, having over 20 years under her belt. Within the past three months, she's had surgery to repair a brain aneurysm and things just haven't been the same since. It starts out with a feeling, a tingling sensation, then progresses to much more. Is there someone in her house? She grabs the baseball bat and makes sure she's alone...but is she really?? Trauma has a way of changing things in a person. Morgan's been through a lot and her friend and co-worker Dr. Savannah thinks she's come back to work too soon. The ER bustles with trauma and one day it smacks Morgan in the face when she realizes she is talking to someone who is dead! She can hear them, feel them, and sometimes see them. Is she going crazy? Then Dr. Carter starts working at the hospital with her. Oh, he's quite the hunk and all the girls are drooling over him. He sees things too. Maybe this isn't as weird as it sounds....
This was a fun book to read! I am a former nurse who had to retire due to trauma. I've been in "haunted" hospital rooms so I could identify with some of the things that Morgan experienced. I'm still not fully certain that this isn't all in my head but maybe one day we'll know more! A very enjoyable book that had me longing to go back to the bedside!! I look forward to reading more books in this series.
Distant Heart Sounds (A Nurse Morgan Series #1) by Kate MacInnes
This is the first book by the author that I've read, but I will be on the lookout for others. MacInnes has done a phenomenal job with this.
Morgan, a nurse, is now able to see things she hasn't been able to before. Thanks to a near-death experience she knows she has roommates. The quote I chose for Morgan is: “No, it’s actually good logic. Who’s to say? Maybe I need to do more research.”
Caleb, a new doctor in town, meets a fantastic nurse. He invites her out after having a chat with her. They have something in common. They can see auras. The quote I chose for Caleb is: “You won’t believe this, but it’s almost 5:30 p.m. Would you like to go to a local place and have an early dinner? We’ve eaten so much junk today, I genuinely need some solid food to balance all the bad. How does that sound?”
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well written and it made me laugh at times. I like the way the paranormal and romance side of things combined as well.
Morgan is a hard worker in a hospitals emergency centre. After suffering with a brain aneurysm Morgan underwent surgery to have it removed. After recovering she has found out that the aneurysm has gone but she has been left with something else in its place. Something she isn't sure about. She can now see, hear and connect with dead people. Not just that the whole psychic world has opened up to her and she doesnt know how to deal with it. Is she really seeing and hearing all these strange things or is she going crazy. Morgan also finds out that being psychic isn't all that great when she stumbles upon secrets that probably should have remained kept that way. Add to the mix the hot new doctor who has started working there who claims he has the same psychic ability as Morgan and can help her. Does she take a risk to see if he can help her in more ways that one.
This book is about a woman called Morgan who gains an odd ability to see ghosts after she undergoes a brain surgery.
I really enjoyed this book! It was really realistic and the majority of Morgan's responses were how an ordinary person would react with ghosts and other traumatic things occurring, which I really appreciated! I really liked the writing style and I loved Savannah, the best friend, as well as the other people who worked at the hospital she worked at. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to read something about ghosts but doesn't want to be scared! It's not a horror or thriller so it's more accessible, in my opinion, to a wide variety of readers. The last chapter was slightly rushed, in my opinion, and although I was satisfied with the ending, I did want more. Although, it is the first in a series so maybe that's why it stops where it does.
This is the first book I have read from this author and she now has a new fan. I love a good paranormal romance but this story exceeded all my expectations. This is the first book in the Nurse Morgan series and let me tell you I’m hooked. These characters drew me in from the start. It only took me a little over a day to devour this wonderful book.
Morgan Cutler had a normal life as a nurse but something happened that changed it all. She had an emergency surgery and now she is seeing people she can’t explain. Morgan thinks she is losing her mind but her patience are dying on her and she doesn’t know why. She is thinking it has everything to do with her. Morgan also meets the man of her dreams but he is a doctor. She doesn’t know who to talk to about her new ability. Morgan is shocked when one of her patients has done something evil but can she make things right?
Distant Heart Sounds was a pleasant surprise! I'll be the first to admit that paranormal anything is not my normal genre. It took me a minute to get into the story, but I immediately liked the characters, especially Morgan and her co-workers/friends in the EC.
Morgan Cutler is a long time career nurse in the EC of the Good Sam hospital. She doesn't have any family left, but has made her own family. After a very serious and life changing surgery, she has found that some aspects of her life are very different. Lucky for Morgan her friends and the new doctor on the floor are very accepting and intrigued.
I really enjoyed this novel. The writing was wonderful and the characters very fun! I am hoping there is more to come for Nurse Morgan Cutler!
I was excited to see what Distant Heart Sounds was all about as soon as I read the blurb. I felt like this could be a fun twist on a medical drama romance and it for sure was! The characters drew me in from the very first page. I love Morgan Cutler, our MC, and following her journey as she began to understand her new life post major surgery. The drama and supporting characters really was gripping and kept me on the edge of my seat as I followed along with them in the Good Sam Hospital emergency department. I loved the extra layer of paranormal and felt like this was the perfect way to get myself in a Halloween/spooky season mindset. I look forward to seeing what the other books in this series will bring, especially after finding out this will continue to bring us more of nurse Morgan!
If you are looking to read a fun exciting short read, look no further this book is for you. In everything that is going on around us in the world, we need to find something to get lost in for a while. The story is a simple plot line. What makes this story great is the characters. The characters are adorable. Morgan is a nurse who does not believe in paranormal anything until she had a near-death experience. That opened her eyes to a lot of things. While she was skeptical at the beginning, she finally learns that she needs to be open to different things. She realizes that she in fact has feelings for a special doctor. This book has a little bit of everything, romance, humor, and mystery. I highly recommend this story as it will be a short fast read.
I give Distant Heart Sounds: A Nurse Morgan Series: Book 1 by Kate MacInnes. 4 stars.
This was a fun, interesting book. It reminds me a bit of Grey's Anatomy but with ghosts. There is so much going on here. Morgan almost dies, and she is still coping with this. Then there is her job and the friends and coworkers who are her family. Oh, and let us not forget that now she can see and talk to ghosts! This book has many angles, but it is so cohesive and makes for a wonderful story. I really enjoyed this book and loved Morgan. It was so interesting seeing how she deals with everything. She feels so real and tackles things like most people would. Morgan is a very strong character and someone to look up to. The secondary characters, both living and ghosts are wonderful and really make this book exceptional. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series and see just where it leads.
If you are a fan of strong female characters, wonderful friendships, and ghosts, this book is for you.
I really enjoyed this book – going in to it I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. The storyline was well written and the characters were great to read about. I liked Morgan, she was a fun character to read about and was supported by some great secondary characters that really added that extra something to the story. The storyline and setting for the story was quite unique in that I’ve never read a paranormal set in a medical setting – it was nice to read something a little different! Overall a really enjoyable read and one that I would definitely recommend. I am looking forward to reading more from this series!
A paranormal romance which had me both laughing out loud at parts and also hiding behind my cushion at the spooky parts. A fairly short read but with plenty going on with the plot to keep me happily turning the pages. I found it to be an easy and fun read with great characters especially the main character, Morgan, who was very realistic and relatable. Morgan Cutler has been an emergency centre nurse for over twenty years and believes she has seen and heard everything. However when Morgan starts to be able to communicate with the dead following a near death experience the skeptical nurse has to come to terms with the fact that, “ just because you haven’t seen a ghost, it doesn’t mean they aren’t around”. As well as coming to terms with the paranormal world and her new abilities Morgan takes a chance at love with a relationship with an emergency centre doctor who also has psychic abilities. Morgan soon learns that some secrets are best left unseen when she sees the evil inside one mans heart. I liked that the main character was a slightly older lady and I enjoyed how her relationship with the new doctor developed throughout the story. As well as some spooky moments there were also light hearted parts and the storyline flowed along at a good pace and kept me immersed in Morgan’s world. Kate MacInnis is a new author discovery for me and I look forward to reading more books by her.
Distant Heart Sounds is the first book in the Nurse Morgan Series and debut novel by Kate MacInnis. This is an original, fun and spooky paranormal romance- with humour, ghosts, a little drama, secrets, mystery, and more. I really enjoyed this book and am happy to have stumbled on this book purely by luck- so I will definitely be keeping my eye out for any new release from Ms. MacInnis in the future as I don’t want to miss a thing. Morgan Cutler is a seasoned ER nurse- with more than 20 years’ experience, so she thought nothing could surprise her anymore. But life throws her a curve-ball and things take a bit of a spooky and unexpected turn when a near-death experience leaves Morgan with new-found psychic abilities. This turns her life upside down- and opens up a world she never really believed existed. Her love life takes an unexpected turn too- all making for a really great read! I can’t wait to see where we go from here!

I enjoyed reading this original story. I found this book to be intriguing, entertaining, funny, a little creepy, and so much more. As a nurse and a fan of the spirit world, I couldn't download Kate MacInnis' book Distant Heart Sounds fast enough. Kate MacInnis kicked off her Nurse Morgan series with a fantastic, fun read. While the book had a lot going on, the storyline never once felt forced or overwhelming. I enjoyed the book from start to finish and truly loved nurse Morgan. I am beyond thrilled to read on in the series and "get to know" Kate MacInnis' writing even more. I loved the book so much, I'd venture to say 5 out of 5 stars.
Kate MacInnis is a wonderful author who takes writing to a new level with Distant Heart Sounds. I loved how the main character at first doesn't believe and then things change and now she does. Writing a novel like this is truly inspiring because nurses see so much and help with so much. When reading this novel you will start wondering if things can happen that you don't know about. Kate MacInnis is a wonderful author and with this novel has hit it out of the park.
When I read the synopsis of this book I wasn’t quite sure it would be something that I would enjoy but to my surprise I found it light hearted and entertaining. It has some wonderful laugh out loud moments and leaves you feeling upbeat and curious for more. I am excited to read book 2 and continue to watch the connections Morgan has made with various characters through her work and her home. For a debut novel, Kate MacInnes has certainly peaked my curiosity. Definitely one to watch.
Distant Heart Sounds, the first novel in A Nurse Morgan Series, was absolutely delightful! It had the perfect mash up of romance, mystery and the supernatural! A well composed novel with a little bit of something for everyone! I enjoyed how well the book flowed and felt as though I could lose myself for a while in the story line. It is the PERFECT book to cozy up on a rainy day and read! The author exhibited great imagination and an easy to read style that left me wanting more.
Kate MacInnis has written an entertaining read about a popular topic that many of us find interesting. Some authors could treat seeing the undead as a scary topic but MacInnis takes a different spin. As with many people who work in the health care field, sensing energies or spirits is not uncommon. Sharing space with them respectfully is a frequent occurrence, and consequently, interesting stories often emerge. If you have an open mind, then "Distance Heart Sounds" may be a book for you!
Distant Heart Sounds (Nurse Morgan Series Book 1) by Kate MacInnis was a quick and fun read. I really enjoyed the plot and character development. The sense of humor was really well done. I felt like I was right there with Morgan as her world had a dramatic change. I loved the paranormal element, it was handled very well and felt unique to the story.
This was such a refreshing take on a paranormal romance. Morgan, an ER nurse, finds herself questioning her sanity after a near-death experience leaves her with psychic abilities. Her best friend, Savvy, and the newest ER doctor help her discover and come to terms with her abilities. This was a fun, and light-hearted book. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Is a paranormal romance which has me laughing out loud however it aso has parts that make me quiver. I found the characters very relatable. Morgan is am extremely hard woker after having some suffering and an operation there somethings there that just not right anymore. Her experience has open up a new world to her.
This story follows Morgan, an E.R. nurse, who almost dies and that results in her acquiring psychic abilities. Morgan being in her 40’s, feels out of sorts but her experience ultimately allows her to open herself up to romance with a hot doctor. This book has it all folks! Spooky, funny, romantic, and all the feels. This one took me by surprise, in a good way! Definitely a fun read!
I adored Morgan and her approach to life and things around her. This book was truly a fun read with the perfect amount of paranormal and romance mixed together. Her coworkers and friends around her help bring the story to life, while the details provided by the author also danced through my imagination
Entertaining introduction This was a fun read with paranormal and a touch of romance. An original spin on the paranormal aspect I was entertained from start into finish. Morgan is a straight forward, matter-of-fact character especially being a nurse, nothing seems to surprise her until events start to unfold and drama abounds. Will definitely be checking out the next instalment of Nurse Morgan.
A real page turner that takes an unusual and fun new direction with traditional ghost stories. Great humor and characters and just enough spooky stuff to have me looking over my shoulder.
I have to admit from the start this isn't usually the type of book I usually read. I was ultimately surprised how easy it was to read and it was very relatable with the relationships, the work environment, and the goings on that seemed to happen around the characters. This was very well written. I could see the characters and the places that they were in as if it were in a movie or I were there with them in the EC. It was also kind of neat to read about a more local destination, I haven't come across a lot of books set in Michigan. This book certainly kept me on my toes and I am curious to know if it is going to continue with the relationships that formed during the entire story. If you are into some ghostly story telling, this is a great book to get into. It isn't at all what I expected in a ghost story and that is what made me like it so much.
Distant Heart Sounds by Kate MacInnis was a delightful paranormal/romance. It was easy to read and follow along with the story. The characters were wonderful and they each had their own personality, which brought a new element to the story. This was my first book by this author and I am excites to read more of her work. If you are looking for somwthing light hearted, this is the book for you.
This was such a fresh take on paranormal romance that I greatly enjoyed! It’s a quick and light read, full of laugh out loud humor. It had a good dose of spooky feels to it also! Easy to squeeze into a lazy afternoon and highly recommended for the season.
This was a very believable story about a nurse who suddenly sees ghosts. I loved Nurse Morgan right away. Can you imagine waking up to a party going on inside your house, but no one is there? I really enjoyed where this story went and look forward to the next book. Highly recommend this easy read.
