Attention little bug Get a first glimpse into the natural world of insects!
This attractive board book will introduce little insect hounds to basic facts about bugs—from beetles and butterflies to silverfish and moths—while realistic, detailed watercolor art from noted wildlife illustrator John Sill brings this diverse group of animals to life.
Simple and clear descriptions of how insects look, where they live, what they eat, and how they move make this third title in the Discovering Nature series a dependable and informative beginning resource on insects and the wonders of the natural world.
Cathryn Sill, a graduate of Western Carolina University, was an elementary school teacher for thirty years. She lives in North Carolina.
When she was an elementary school teacher who loves nature. When she had trouble finding good natural history books for her kindergarten class, she decided to write them.
With her husband John as the illustrator, she has created two series of nonfiction books for children.
The ABOUT series is about different groups of animals and includes 16 books. She has just completed the eighth books in a series about habitats.
An elegant display of insects and their common characteristics. Each page of this board book features a different insect engaging in a behavior, with a sentence to describe the image. The beautiful watercolor and life-like illustrations will surely engage children. My only critique is the second sentence that reads, "Insects have three body parts," with a stag beetle showcasing "three body parts"; only this is rather confusing without any proper labeling; thus a parent who does not know about the head, thorax, and abdomen won't be able to educate their child.
CURIOUS ABOUT INSECTS is a great non-fiction board book that lays out some basic facts about insects. Each page has a brief sentence about insects, such as that they have six legs, and a related picture. The images are beautifully done with detailed insects drawn to look so real! The facts cover places where they live, things they eat, and other fun, basic information.
What I loved: This is great information, perfect for board book readers including infants and toddlers. The amount of text on each page is great, and the illustrations are unbelievably good. They look so real! The detail is really phenomenal too, with plenty of attention to background as well as the insects themselves. Toddlers who are interested in bugs will delight in looking at these insects, while they also get to hear basic facts. I really appreciated that each image is labeled as to the type of insect pictured, so parents can easily give names of each of them when asked.
The text is very clear and in a reasonably large font. The sentences are printed at the bottom of the page in a separate, solid color bar that will really help caregivers to read them easily. The board book pages are great for little fingers who want to turn the pages themselves without being too thick/heavy to hold. This was definitely designed with the right age group in mind.
Final verdict: With detailed and fantastic images, CURIOUS ABOUT INSECTS is an educational board book for infants and toddlers to begin learning more about the world- more specifically, the bugs - around them. Highly recommend for curious young readers or those who already enjoy insects!
Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.
I've read other books in the 'Curious About' series and some of the illustrations in this board book are not as vibrant, so are a little hard to see (ex. silverfish) and some of the insects should have some with a pronunciation guide/help (ex. Virginia Ctenucha Moth). That being said, I loved the image of the Horse Fly on a horse. This book can be an asset for STEM learning with regard to the different types of insects and that it is important to protect them and where they live. I received this book from Peachtree Publishing.
Having encountered Cathryn Sill’s work on a spur of the moment visit to a Library in Kentucky, I decided to read some other of here titles. Curious About Insects is definitely about average Board book and could be used well beyond the normal board book ages. Each board is a painting illustration of one insect in a normal habitat for the species with one sentence about an aspect of insects as well as in small print the name of the insect illustrated. All illustrations are done by the author’s artist husband, John Sill. My favorite illustration was the silverfish with old books telling one that insects live almost everywhere.
This is a great book that covenys basic information about insects in simple language accompanied by realistic illustrations of bees, moths, butterflies, grasshoppers, beetles, and others.
With a sentence about insects and a gorgeous illustration on each page, Curious About Insects provides young children with basic information about insects. A wide variety of insect characteristics are included with examples of each characteristic. Each illustration is labeled with the name of the insect being shown. Some of the insects included are as follows : dogbane leaf beetle, giant stag beetle, praying mantis, monarch butterfly, silverfish, Virginia ctenucha moth, Southeastern Lubber Grasshopper, and others. The text is straightforward and easy to understand. The illustrations are gorgeous and full of interesting details. This book makes for a great introduction to the natural world for young children.
Curious about Insects is a board book for young readers about insects and different things about them. it is a simple book with short simple writing that is concise and to the point on each beautifully illustrated page. Each page has its own watercolor-esq drawing of an insect that is wonderfully detailed and so pretty. They also match what the text is saying, i.e. insects have six legs shows insects with six legs and so on. Each page also tells you what kind of bug is there in fine print which I very much appreciated.
What I really liked about this book is that it takes something kinda icky and makes it both interesting but also very easy to understand for the youth that will be using these board books. It also begins them on a road to not being so scared of bugs as they age, which is always appreciated. Honestly, as an adult, I tend to feel the same way; the more I learn about something, the less frightened I am of it.
Overall, regardless if you kid likes bugs or not, this is a great little book. It in the end talks about protecting the insects and I liked that message, but it was information and very beautifully illustrated either way.
