A Winter Symphony

Rate this book
Shortly after the harrowing events of The Mistress, Kingsley realizes that to protect Juliette and their baby on the way, they need to leave New York and put their pasts behind them for good. Yet he's waited all his life to have Søren back and now that he does, how will he tell the only man he's ever loved he's leaving him...again? And will Søren be able to let him go?

A Winter Symphony: A Christmas Novella also features Original Sinners favorites Juliette, Mistress Nora, Michael and Griffin, and the city of New Orleans. As an added bonus, the short Christmas story "A Beautiful Thing" (first published online in 2012, and never appearing in print before) is included as a backup story.

I'm sure I said that already but I truly live for Sinners Christmas novellas. They give me joy, they give me laugh, they give me warm feeling inside.

“I’ll be back with beignets. Extra powdered sugar. Decaf coffee for you.”
“Kink and caffeine— the only two things I miss from BC.”
Before Coco.
“I promise, after the baby’s here and you’re ready, we’ll drink espresso and have kinky sex all night.”
“That’s all I ask,” she said.

There's nothing better than to spend cold winter nighta in the company of the Sinners.

“Happy now?” Søren asked softly, laughter in his voice. “Now that you left your mark on the bed?”
Kingsley opened his tired eyes and saw the steel ring had cut gouges into the top of the bedpost, gouges so deep they’d exposed the pale wood underneath the dark stain and varnish.
Blissfully, he smiled.
“Very, very happy.”

These novella was everything that I didn't know I needed. We already got many many clousures in various novellas and short stories, however, this one was beyond perfect 💖

“Don’t let me fall asleep,”Kingsley said. “I want to be home by midnight.”
“What happens at midnight?”
“Juliette will want crêpes.”
“You make her crêpes at midnight? Midnight crêpes?”
“She’s six months pregnant with my baby. If she wants crêpes at midnight and blood oranges at dawn and a rack of lamb for lunch, she gets it.”
“Maybe I want midnight crêpes.”
“Are you pregnant with my child?”
“Not at the moment.”
“Then make your own fucking crêpes.”

I love Kingsley and Juliette together, I love Søren and Kingsley together, I love Nora and Søren together, I just love everyone together and happy and in love.

“But I don’t think he’s mad at you at all.”
“Are you sure?”
“He’s been playing Vivaldi’s ‘Winter’ over and over again like some kind of Phantom of the Rectory. It’s very adorable, not that I told him that. I think he’s pining for you. I know he’s not pining for me. He can’t get rid of me.”

And now I'll be sitting here, waiting for December 😊

Every year I look forward to the holiday story from Ms. Reisz and this year did not disappoint. I didn't read the blurb so it was a pleasant surprise to discover Søren and King were again the featured protagonists.

A Winter Symphony tells the story of how the Sinners decided to make the move to NOLA. What took this story next level was the 1-2 punch of kink and romance.

Søren was kissing his back, kissing his bruises. Kissing them softly, but even Søren's softest kisses caused him pain. Those were his favorite kisses, the ones that hurt.

Truly, only Søren could wield kisses like a knife and a knife like a kiss.

I recall fussing about the lack of pain in last year's story and Ms. Reisz accepted that challenge apparently because Søren brought it and King took it all. #TeamPain for the win!!!!!!!

This new, more honest version of Søren levels me. Søren has been so reserved and taciturn so when he gets verbose (well, as verbose as Søren is going to get) I always find myself caught of guard at the sincerity and depth of emotions.

Lastly, it wasn't smacking me in the face with boughs of holly which I appreciate. And some of the other favored Sinners showed up to round out the experience.

Recommend to fans of the series and thank you Ms. Reisz for making the season bright!

“You want something for your whole life, and you get so used to wanting it, you don’t know how to get used to having it.”
- Kingsley

-—-

“Only Søren could wield kisses like a knife and a knife like a kiss.”
- Kingsley

-—-

“That there are two reasons you leave someone you’re still in love with: either it’s the right thing to do, or it’s the only thing to do.”
- Nora

-—-

“All these years, I resented you and hated her because I told myself that you loved her more than you loved me…but really, I think the truth is, she loved you more than I did, and I knew it, and that’s what I resented.
If not more, then better. She loved you better than I ever did. A brooding sexual obsession with someone you dated in high school doesn’t really count as a relationship, does it?
I made passes at you. She made sacrifices for you. If this was a competition between me and her and you were the prize, she should win, hands down.”

Kingsley Edge is at a pivotal moment in his life and his decision impacts those he loves. Getting Søren to admit certain truths has always been on King’s mind, but as always, Søren knows what to do to alleviate his worry. Together, they forge forward in the only way they know how. Laissez les bons temps rouler.

“Was there anything like being kissed while fighting for air that made one feel more used? More owned?”

With the plot’s timeframe set after The Mistress, much has occurred between Kingsley, Søren and Nora. Though Kingsley has always appeared to be unflappable and full of French confidence, he has also always shown an affinity toward family and the bond between he and Søren continues to get stronger. Seeing the vulnerability of both Kingsley and Søren is endearing. Of course, the kinky dynamic between them is thoroughly hot and they both left their mark. I absolutely love how what they share isn’t easy but it is deep and indestructible.

A Winter Symphony is a Christmas tale that will warm your heart and other body parts.

Truth makes love possible; but love makes truth bearable.— Achbishop Rowan Williams.

My musician heart was overwhelmed with the movements of this symphony. Starting with Allegro in November and ending with Coda in March; notes in between pure perfection. I'll let quotes sing for me and let you guess to whom the quotes belong.

“Any other brutally personal questions?”
“One million. Give or take.”

For a moment, he could imagine she was a Valkyrie, fierce, deadly, and wild.

“God, I haven’t seen you in forever, man. Get in here. Hug me ’til it hurts.”

“I don’t need this house or this church. I need you. I need her. I need my family. If my family is in New Orleans, that’s where I need to be.”

The taste of Søren— like snow melting on his tongue— and the scent of the fire, and the rough grip of strong, cool fingers on the back of Kingsley’s neck, and the wind outside rushing over the windows… all of it came together and turned the kiss into a winter symphony.

Two excellent short stories. Nice Christmas gift. One story is mainly about Søren and Kingsley and the other is about a gift Nora gave to Søren. Anyway, as long as Søren is in the stories, I'm happy. ;)

Genre: Erotica
Type: Novella from The Original Sinners series
POV: Third Person
Rating:

For most of his life, Kingsley lived by his own rule. For the sake of his family, that world could no longer be part of his life. But leaving it behind meant leaving the people that shaped him.

“Come,” Søren ordered into his ear, and Kingsley couldn’t disobey. His back bowed and he let go, coming in spurts onto the white sheets even as Søren pounded into him with rough thrusts Kingsley barely registered through the wild haze of orgasm.

Søren and Kingsley have always been my favorite couple in the series. There’s just something about their love that made it pure. And I loved how in tuned Søren was with King. Sometimes I feel like all the extra novellas and short stories unnecessarily stretching the series, but I don’t think I could ever be tired of these two special characters.

His body was a sacrificial bonfire and Soren the god for whom he burned.

Always and forever my favorite sinners.

I save these short stories for when I don't have much reading time but feel like catching up with old friends. I've been rationing these tidbits for a while and it'll be quite the sad day when I don't have any more to read.

"I've been saving it for you."

"What did I do to deserve the honor?"

"You showed up."

I didn't think I could ever read a story about Søren and Kingsley without feeling actual anguish from the pining and hurt the two of them cause each other but A Winter Symphony was such a lovely novella about love and healing following The Mistress. It's so surreal seeing Kingsley so happy and content but what a lovely sight. This honestly made me want more stories centered on Søren and Kingsley, whether it be flashbacks of the past or small moments of the possible future. I also just adore Juliette and Kingsley's relationship, their quiet moments together that soothed the soul made me further understand why their partnership works so well.

I definitely could have done with another fifty... or a hundred pages of this novella, I honestly did not want it to end. To be able to bask in the happier moments of the Original Sinners series (especially focused on Kingsley) is a rare and wonderful thing. And seeing even more parts of Søren we haven't seen before (I loved how extra playful and open, but still strict, he was in this book) was just the cherry on top.

This was such an enjoyable novella. It made me hurt inside and grin so much to see all these characters all over again kind of made me melancholic haha. I can’t even start to explain all of the characters without giving away any spoilers from the series so I will make this short. If you have read the series you must read this short and sexy read.

I mean. What do you want me to say? I adore these little Christmas novellas - especially because I feel like Søren's wintery scent is extremely strong this time of year. LOL!

This series is THE best series ever and so this little book was just perfect too.
We have adorable, sweet, christmasy, erotic, kinky, heartbreaking moments with our darlings Kingsley, Søren and Nora. Moments full of the kind of ultra love that only these guys have. Just beautiful.
And of course there's Juliette and the soon-to-be-born baby. They're the reason we're all moving to New Orleans. Just adorable.

I could read a Sinners novella/book every months for the rest of eternity. Can we do that please Tiffany? K. Thanks.😘
And that's coming from someone who hates religion and this extreme kind of bdsm. But pffft I don't even care, because this series is just SO amazing! 😍

All the characters are back...Griffin, Mick, Nora. And most importantly Kingsley and Soren 💜. This story gives me a much better perspective of their move to New Orleans...especially in The Mistress where Kingsley announced his move and Nora just went ahead and looked for a place because "where Kingsley goes, Soren will follow."

This story is full of feelings and tenderness between the two of them. I always knew Soren loves Kingsley more than Nora, and Kingsley loves children more than Soren. And I am okay with that.

I am already looking forward to next year's Winter story 💕.

“A king and a priest walking through a snowy wood...It sounded like the beginning of a story, not the end.”

I know it was for Christmas but I was too excited to wait. Like a kid at Christmas, I dived straight into the good stuff. And oh it was good.

The bulk of this Christmas novella is after the events in The Mistress when our triumvirate are still licking their wounds and everything is being re-shaped and reformed into something new.

King comes to the realisation that he needs to leave New York (REM’s Leaving New York is playing on repeat in my brain). But leaving New York means leaving Søren and Nora and that’s never easy.

Kinky fuckery with Søren, yes please. Draw an S on me with a scalpel - oh go on then but only if King will kiss it better and Nora will put a Snoopy plaster on it. I think I’m going to move to New Orleans.

Bonus story, because it’s Christmas and Tiffany likes to spoil us! Ahhhhh the piano and the adorably vanilla Wesley. I still love him.

Kings aren’t just for Christmas or notches on bed posts. They’re for life.

“His body was a sacrificial bonfire and Søren the god for whom he burned.”

Happy, happy, happy Christmas!

I am always happy when I get more Soren and Kingsley and Nora.

This was such a beautifully written collection of moments between these characters. I swear I’ll never tire of them. Their pain, their lust, their raw love. This is a Christmas tale I’ll always be ready to receive.

Rereading The Original Sinners series is one of my favorite ways to pass the time and relax. Reading something new about the Sinners? Well, that's just priceless.

Just when I thought I couldn't adore Kingsley more, this little novella comes along.

The time was just after the Sinners endured Marie-Laure's deadly craziness, and they were coping. They were all changed, wanting something different. Kingsley was feeling that change in him. As a papa to be, his priorities had changed. The life he'd led prior Marie-Laure was no longer appealing or safe for his family, so he'd made a difficult decision to make a change that would affect all the Sinners. It would affect his relationship with Søren.

Kingsley and Søren were finally building a relationship, and Kingsley was happy. So happy. But, a change had to be made. It was weighing heavily on him, but luckily, as we already know, in the end it all worked out for him. For all of them.

It was an end of era for the Sinners, and a start of something new. Something different. Party was over.

I loved reading this part of the Sinners' story. I loved learning something new about them. Even after all these years, there's something more to learn. Of course, I loved that this was written in Kingsley's POV, and that he was happy.

This book also contains A Beautiful Thing, a Christmas short story. Really, the story of how Nora damaged Søren's old piano, and got him a new one, to be super short in my description. There's more to the story, of course. There always is.

I'm going to get straight to the point. I loved this book. How could I not? Kingsley is one of my favorite characters ever written. He is the embodiment of arrogance, power, and danger, yet has a vulnerability that creeps out making me want to hug him (or beat him since that may give him more comfort). This vulnerability is explored in A Winter Symphony.

Set shortly after the events that took place in The Mistress, Kingsley and the rest of the unholy trinity are still reeling from the traumatic events that took place. Nora is struggling; Soren, our almighty pillar of strength, is shaken; and our fearless King is afraid for the life of his beautiful Juliette and their unborn child. Life is no longer a constant party. Dangers lurk everywhere and feelings that had been beaten into submission are brought to the forefront, refusing to be denied. King and Soren are more honest with each other than they've ever been. The interaction between these two is always a highlight for me, and this novella is no exception.

The story is touching, sexy, and answers questions like how did our dynamic trio end up in New Orleans. If you are a fan of The Original Sinners series ( and, come on, who isn't?), this novella is a must-read. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

LOVED!! The writing was MAGNIFIQUE!!!! ALL THE EMOTIONS AS ALWAYS!!!

“The first time he fell for her, it was for her sorrow. Now he found himself falling even harder for her joy.” Kingsley

The bonus story was THE BEST-sad, emotional, cute, uplifting….

“Sometimes that’s all one needed to get through a hard day-someone just being there.” Eleanor

PERFECTION!!!
Soren and Kingsley's love for one another is an extremely deep one... if you've read "The Original Sinners Series", you'll understand and comprehend why. Their connection is painfully beautiful... literally and metaphorically! "A Winter Symphony" is yet another fine example of this unique bond between two head strong men who complete each other in every way possible. 5 Harmoniously Beautiful Stars for "A Winter Symphony: A Christmas Novella"... where the softest kisses cause the most pain.
