Hoogs aanbeveeld!!
ENGLISH:
A well written and researched book about Hans Lötter and his life as a Cape Rebel. The author takes you on a journey through the Eastern Cape Karoo in the saddle with Lötter and his men through the hard times fighting and evading the British columns. Everyday was a struggle for these freedom fighters against the British, colonial loyalists, spies and the elements. Up until his capture at the Battle of Groenkloof, Lötter was regarded as one of the best commando leaders in the war and was regarded as brutal by the British, which is ironic as the British was then busy with it's scorched earth policy in South Africa and rounding up Boer women and children and putting them in concentration camps to break the Boer spirit, which in turn just lead to harder fighting from the commandos to try and save their country. Lötter's trial after his capture was farcical in it's charges against him and he was set up to be found guilty and executed as an example to other Cape Rebels still on commando. His execution lead to public outcry across South Africa, Britain and Europe and was just a small part in the sad tale of British brutality during the latter stages of the war. Highly recommended!!
