Her secret was never meant to be discovered. It all began with a stolen dagger.

Amaleigh’s life as an urchin thief comes to a crashing halt the moment she flings herself off a cliff to escape the king’s guards. One moment she’s a young woman, and the next is a blur of wings, talons, and a long-hidden secret that could destroy not just her life, but the entire kingdom.

All she ever wanted was freedom, a chance to choose her path and not answer to anyone. A chance to stop thieving and make something more for herself. The dagger was supposed to buy her way out of a life she didn’t choose. Instead, it brings her nothing but trouble.

Freedom comes at the ultimate price. She’ll have to make a choice—kill the prince, who happens to be her best friend, or live the rest of her days as a caged pet for her deranged boss.

Some loyalties can’t be broken. Some pasts won’t stay hidden.

Amaleigh is a street urchin, a thief, a cutpurse, but she wants more. She is tired of living under the thumb of the Urchin King, who has been looking at her differently these days, and it makes her sick. Her story is a typical one. Her parents were killed sixteen years ago when she was three, and the street king took her in. She is grateful for that, but living under his thumb is something she does not want to do anymore. Especially since the way he has been looking at her and the career track older women have been forced into to survive. She does not want to prostitute herself to survive, so she came up with a plan. She has known for years how to sneak into and out of the palace with all its secret entrances and passageways, and she has decided to steal something valuable to buy her freedom. What she steals is something she never should have touched. She never should have been able to touch.

This is a very interesting reality created by the author. The physical world-building leaves a lot to be desired. The ethereal world-building is almost non-existent. The character’s interaction feels like it could be true. The character’s history is part of the story and gives the reader a reason to read on.

This short story, a prequel, is a fantasy with magic and dragons. I give this read four stars out of five stars.

Fascinating short.

Well this was an interesting little prequel. I always enjoy reading stories about female thieves, throwing in dragons is an added bonus.
