I know my students are going to love the exciting life led by Mahalia Jackson and the time period she lived. She was able to have the strength to make changes in her life to make her life better.

She knew living in the south she would never have the opportunitites she would if she moved to the north so she saved her meager wages and moved with her aunt's family in Chicago. While in Chicago she met with friends who loved music and began singing in local churches. From there she was able to make her way to audiences everywhere.

She is a true hero to all children, no matter the color or gender. She proved her skin color did not dictate her abilities or dreams. She proved her gender did not stop her from becoming what she loved and sharing that love with others.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a hero!
