The Trouble With Quarterbacks

Rate this book
A full-length STANDALONE romantic comedy from USA TODAY bestselling author R.S. Grey. KAT & YASMINE! DO NOT DALLY! Come straight home after work. Kat, don’t take the long route from the subway station just so you can pass by Cute Hot Dog Guy. This is important! I’ve had THE BEST DAY. You won’t believe it. There I was in my preschool classroom, washing a bit of poo out of some soggy trousers, when this absolute babe came to collect his nephew from my class. Truthfully, I thought I’d blacked out for a moment when I first saw him. He was a proper hunk with glorious brown hair, quite tall, and he had these arms. Are muscly arms supposed to turn me on? I’m panting just thinking about them. Anyway, he told me he’s a professional foosball player. At least, I think that’s what he said. The tots can get quite loud near pick-up time. Foosball? What are you on about? Have you gone mad? Oh sod off. So what if I like to have a good look at Hot Dog Guy’s arse on my trek home after a hard day’s work? It’s called self-care. Kat, you’re hopeless. Yasmine, yes—foosball! I suppose it’s a big thing over here in the States? We must investigate and learn everything we can. By the way, he’s called Logan. Logan + Candace. I think that sounds quite nice! I can hear the wedding bells now. Dum dum da-dum. Oh good grief. I suppose we can do some snooping when I get home. I’ll grab wine on my way. I’ll grab hot dogs. THE TROUBLE WITH QUARTERBACKS is a hilarious romance about unlikely love found between a British preschool teacher and the professional quarterback who sweeps her off her feet.

Eh. I miss RS Grey's old books. None of her new releases have been doing it for me. They just seem like they are being written by a totally different author or someone who is trying too hard to be "funny". Nothing special that makes it stand out from any other rom coms that release nowadays, it even has the OTT humor that I can't stand to read.

She used to have the best slow burns with so much tension and chemistry and the humor was the best because it was subtle and realistic. Now though, they are very insta love, which doesn't make sense because I feel like the scenes between the two MCs are few and far between, which is the same problem I had with the last release by this author. There are so many scenes with the MCs and their respective friends or them at their jobs, and I just don't see any development between them because we never have any time with them. And when we do, the scenes are just way too short. And the humor is so OTT and very much like slap stick humor, which isn't funny to me at all. Especially with the heroine and her friends, it just made them all seem very immature and childish.

The storyline itself was also pretty bland and I just didn't care for any of it. I felt like most of the story was just about how famous he was and how excited the heroine was that this famous dude is interested in her, and it was all just bleh. I wish there was a bit more push and pull or something with them. There was just no sexual tension or build up at all and it was so uninteresting to read about. I literally didn't care for any of the characters or their romance. Like I'm literally having a hard time remembering any names right now.

Overall, a boring read. I keep hoping this author will come back and write like how she used to, but it seems like it's just non stop misses now, and I don't even think I want to read her next book if this is going to be her normal content now.

This was a LOT of fun!!!

I love a great sports romance, even more so if the hero is an interesting mix of sweet and demanding and the heroine is a character that really stands out.

Candace was probably why I had so much fun reading this book. She is British, feisty, has almost no filter, is a bit naive (endearingly so), but also incredibly likable. She and her two roommates cracked me up non-stop. They were a bit ridiculous at times, but it was just enough to be hilarious.

I loved the overall storyline of a famous quarterback falling in love with a pre-school teacher. There were definitely two worlds colliding, but I thought the author did a great job keeping it interesting. Thanks to two characters that actually wanted to make a relationship work.

I thought Candace was way too naive at times when it came to being with a famous athlete. But the naïvety fit her personality, so I took it in stride.

So overall, this one gets a 👍🏼 !!!! I haven't read a RS GREY novel that I enjoyed this much in a long time.

A mom passes him in the hall and does a double take. Oh right, yes, like you’ve never seen a man that hot before. KEEP IT MOVING, LEEANNE!

I feel like you know exactly what you're getting when you start reading an R.S. Grey book. And for me, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Whenever I'm in the mood for a good rom-com, I go straight to her blacklist and she delivers most of the time. Some of her books are kind of a miss for me.

The hero was sweet and alpha at the same time and honestly, I LOVE that combination especially when paired with a hilarious heroine who is confident and very british. I also loved Candace's group of friends. Half of the times I was laughing in this book was because of them.

But at the same time I wanted more of a plot in this. While I was enjoying it when I was reading it, it just seems like a book I'm gonna forget about really quickly. It was a great book but it just wasn't on par with some of my favourites by her.

All in all, this was still a great rom-com and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh.

My mistake was over hyping this in my head.

I was very excited for this. Too excited. With the exception of one book, I’ve loved all of this author’s work.

This one started off strong. It was fun and playful. Then it just nose dived in the second half and fell completely flat. The storyline seemed to evaporate and the fun quips ended.

I will say though that Grey did well portraying a down to earth English heroine and her friends - finally we get a English character that hasn’t stepped straight out of Downton Abbey!

I too have no clue what the American version of football is either... football is when you kick a ball with your foot, no? 😉

As always, R.S. Grey writes a fun, charming, and humorous romantic comedy. This one didn’t disappoint and I LOVED how it was a sports romance!

Oh these two main characters. How I loved them! Their chemistry was off the charts and though I liked them together, I also liked both of them individually as characters. As well, I loved how this story showed the problems with fame and the negative impacts that it can have. I think a lot of people idolize the idea of fame without realizing that there’s a lot of sacrifices that go along with it, especially involving the privacy of that individual and the ones they love.

As much as I loved the pace of the novel, I felt like the ending was a little abrupt. I wish that there was more to it and a bit more closure.

This was such a fun romantic comedy and as always, I eagerly anticipate what R.S. Grey will write next!

I picked this one because it was marked as humorous and that is the biggest joke...it is hard to get into the story and laugh when the leading characters are so freaking annoying!

Maybe I'll up it to 2.5 Stars

For a while now, things haven’t been the same between this author and me. I used to gobble up her books as soon as they hit the one-click button. Now they’re all just “meh” – and unfortunately this one fell into the same category.

Yes, there were some LOL comical moments and both Logan and Candace were likable, but they just weren’t anything special or had much draw for me. Candace wore on my nerves to the point of rolling my eyes and gritting my teeth more times than I care to remember. The Brit thing seemed very forced and like it equated to dumb blonde status. Now I’ve got lots of British friends and most are highly intelligent and reasonably calm and collected, can be really funny but have a serious side as well. I guess what I’m saying is that Candace was a ditz 24-7. Logan was either a saint to put up with all her craziness or he’d been hit in the head too many times to notice. OK – I’m just being mean now.

Anyway, I’ll call the book cute and even funny at times (because I really liked Briggs, a three-year old who had more sense than both Logan and Candace). But what I really missed was some depth and grown-up relationship time amid the trappings of the childish mindset. And let’s talk about those hot grown-up games they’d play anywhere-anytime. I felt the intimacy was missing. There didn’t seem to be much strength or foundation to their story. More like a visit to jokes-ville and that just wasn't enough for me.

So, it was another fumble. I’ll be thankful for the extra points though -- because the Quarterback and his British teacher were offered in Kindle Unlimited.

I will preface this review by saying that I adore this author - her written work is romance heaven for my tastes. In fact her release before this book was a firm favourite of 2020 if not a forever favourite. That brings us to the release of ‘The Trouble With Quarterbacks’ - I was ready, waiting and excited that I’d been given the opportunity to read and review before release day. This book had all the elements that normally make me fall head over heels in love with a book - the quirky heroine, the opposites attract vibe, the ‘will they, won’t they’ factor, the friendship with the secondary characters, the alpha quarterback. Normally, all those things would have me salivating and handing out a five star like it was my sole job in life. However, (please don’t shoot me fellow RS Grey fans) I didn’t fall in love with this book, and I’m going to make it quick and simple with my reasons why. I just didn’t feel the connection and romance between the protagonists, I didn’t believe in their relationship and in addition the female lead was a British character and her British lingo was forced, a little awkward and misplaced. I really wanted to fall helplessly in love but this time around it wasn’t to be. But all is not lost readers, I’ve seen five star reviews all around amazon and Goodreads so I believe I’m fully on the minority island with my opinions here. With all that being said, this author is still a firm favourite and I’ll be earnestly awaiting her next release.

This was bloody brilliant! R.S. Grey's effervescence shines through in this super fun, witty, and sizzling hot read.
“Who are you, Candace Williams?”
“Just some loon from across the pond.”

The corners of his mouth rise in amusement. “You’re maddening.”

Hero: Logan Matthews is not just any NFL quarterback, together with his team, he’s won the last Super Bowl and everyone seems to want a piece of him, except his nephew’s quirky British preschool teacher who has no clue who he is. Logan is my favorite rom-com book boyfriend of 2020. I just adored him, he’s sweet and down to earth and also a super sexy alpha male.

Heroine: Candace is perfect for him. She’s self-deprecating and funny, a ray of warm and fun sunshine. She sees the normal man underneath the “defined rear end.”

Sexiness: The attraction between these two were off the charts from the moment they laid eyes on each other, and every time they interacted sparks would fly, but there was also an effortlessness to their relationship. The back and forth between them was hilariously endearing.

Plot: When Candace and Logan met, she didn’t know him from Adam and there was something truly alluring about her the fact and her, that made Logan pursue her. And when she realized who he was and his fame, some adjustments to integrate into his world were easy, but some where necessary and unwanted. But as their relationship developed, the two were very open with each other. Something I really appreciate.

Story side notes:
- At times their story made me remember when Prince Charles was courting Lady Diana.
- The way Logan interacted with his nephew was absolutely swoon worthy.

Feels: I laughed and smiled and most definitely swooned. The Trouble with Quarterbacks is engaging from start to finish, the anticipation is written with skill and I found myself unable to put Candace and Logan’s story down.

Facts: The Trouble with Quartebacks is a standalone rom-com by R.S. Grey. It is told from both points of view with a happy ending.

Overall rating: 5++

3.5 stars ???

this was a LOT better than the recent books grey has released, i enjoyed the snippets of candace’s teaching and her interactions with the kids, and i’ll always appreciate an unapologetically british mc and logan was something ELSE, BUT it’s still not one of my favourites and i’ll probably forget all about it in a day or so

one thing that really bugged me was the excessive use of exclamation marks in this book? like! please! stop! and candace was kind of annoying at times, trying too hard to be “quirky” and funny

overall, MUCH better and an enjoyably easy read but still not on par with some of her other books

i’m still here for this despite the disappointing previous releases okay grey i believe in you

I don't know what happens to R. S Grey 😲 but this book is horrible, with simple and stupid main and secondary characters, with a flat and silly plot, from the first pages I hated this book but I continued until the end because I was hoping that as the book progressed it got better but no, the last chapters were a disaster with stupid "dramas", and the H and the h 😖 are so empty and cliché that it bothers and the friends 😒 do not even deserve a few words, when I finish The book I felt angry that I got to the end and wasted hours reading it instead of putting it down and Dnf, I'm out no more R. S Grey for a while for me.

Ok... apparently I can't get enough of sports romance these days but can you blame me? They are soo addictive!

But anyways I really enjoyed this one ... I think that I had a smile on my face the entire time while I was reading it. I loved Candance! she is hilarious just like her friends (although they were a little crazy hahaha) and I really liked Logan too.

I think that my only problem was at the beginning ... with the chemistry between the characters because it felt like "Insta Love" for me and that is not a trope that I like too much... but after I kept reading I really liked the dynamic between these two.

Anyways.... overall this was such a funny read that I can't even count how many times I was laughing out loud with this book.

Liked it very much!
I usually never go wrong with R.S. Grey's book and this one proves my point.

I loved both characters, they were realistically portrayed and the situations, no matter the well worn out trope (the NFL god meets a regular girl and they hit it off in spite the odds against them), and I loved the heroine just a little bit more...

I laughed out loud and I was grinning through out the story and felt good after I've finished it.

Well, that is what i call a job well done! *wink*

I really didn’t like this and I skimmed most of it. candace was too quirky and ditzy & something about logan rubbed me the wrong way. it wasn’t special enough to keep my interest. hopefully the next book will be better.

oh and not to mention - why is the heroine on this cover the same as the heroine on hotshot doc???? that was something I noticed as soon as the cover dropped and it’s bothered me ever since.

Yeah I'm still reading every book by this author. I know, I know! You're sick of me but don't worry I'll read another author soon.

So I really enjoyed this book but there were a few things that bugged me. The British dialogue just didn't hit 100% right, it felt a bit overdone sometimes and it felt like she was only a step away from saying "blimey guvner!!!" ...thankfully she didn't though 😂 but yeah, it bugged me a bit at times. Also the h did the coward act of ignoring phone calls and running away from the H for stupid reasons which bugged me too. Lastly, her friends were assholes, I don't know if the author was intending for them to be more tough love, say shitty things to show you care for someone which is the way we roll in Australia and in the UK but it just came off as...shitty, so yeah wasn't a fan of them.

So with that out of the way I loved Logan. I love cocky athletes who go after what they want with pure determination and in this case he was even a bit bulldozer-y which I (not so secretly) love in my H's. Also enjoyed that they had sex in public and it was a bit filthy and quick.

This was definitely a fluffy read with lots of sweet moments and sexy banter. Nothing too deep but I couldn't put the book down either.

I want to start by saying that this is the perfect beach read, I received the ARC a few days ago and I engulfed it in a few days. I think I enjoyed this book a lot because it was a romantic comedy that makes you laugh at times, this is something that I absolutely enjoy while reading books. I can say that, after having read several of R.S. Grey's books, she is one of the few romance authors that can make me laugh while reading her books.

My favorite thing of The Trouble With Quarterbacks was Candace and her two friends and roommates, Yasmine and Kat. They were hilarious together and they made you want to hang out with them!

Candace, on the one hand, was such a soft, cute and funny character. I loved that she had this sarcastic trait to her, and how she got into her head and entertain you with her monologues. Logan, on the other hand, was great in his own way, although I felt like I didn't get to knoe him as much as I did Candace even though this was a dual POV book. He was sweet and soft, but I really can't say much else about him.

The romance was good, the characters had this chemistry from the very first start and they acted upon it. However, I do feel like everything happened too fast between the two of them, there wasn't any built-up in my opinion. I usually enjoy the back and forth before the characters get together, and I feel like Candace and Logan acted from the very first second. They were still very cute tho!!

This was a funny, light read with a cute girl gang and a cuter love story. It was exactly what I needed on my vacation and provided me with good laughs.

Reread: 4 stars. I still really enjoyed this book but just wasn’t as blown away by it the second time around. I listened to the audiobook this time, and was very underwhelmed by both of the narrators. The voice acting was truly terrible. I still think that there are some really good laughs to be found in this book. It’s a very light and breezy rom-com, which is totally up my ally. Low angst and all that jazz.

Safe; no serious om/ow drama. Very few details given about their pasts.

There’s a lot I could say about this book if I wanted to be critical - but tbh, I just don’t! This has to be, hands down, one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. The jokes lasted from beginning to end, and it was glorious. I loved it. I laughed so hard that I cried. I laughed so hard that my husband was side eyeing me for hours. I laughed so hard that I peed a little in my pants (damn these lasting gifts of pregnancy).

This book is a just such a fun read! I highly recommend it!

R.S. Grey used to be one of my go to authors. Lately, it has been hit or miss with her books. This one is another one that didn't quite work for me.

I didn't really connect with either character. Candace kinda drove me crazy if I'm being honest. Her British accent felt forced and even awkward. It got cringy at times, and I had to skim. Candace's personality was a little too ditzy for my taste as well. Logan was okay, but I felt like I didn't get to know his character at all.

I didn't mind the instalove between them- they had some sweet and funny moments for sure-but things moved a bit quickly. There was no build up. It was cute, but it didn't feel that special.

(Also, it strangely bothers me the model on this cover is the same one from Hot Shot Doc)

Fingers crossed about the next one.

4.5 Laugh out loud & Swoon worthy stars!!

“It’s like she’s the best TV show I’ve ever watched and I have to know what happens next.”

The Trouble With Quarterbacks is a fun and entertaining read from author R.S. Grey. This book has so much sass and swoon, it will leave you with a ridiculous smile on your face!

The Trouble With Quarterbacks follows the story of Candace & Logan. Candace is a jack of all trades; preschool teacher by day, waitress by night. She works hard and is pretty happy with the status quo, even if it leaves her lacking in the romance department. But, when she meets one of her student’s uncles, all bets are off. Candace’s perfect little life is turned upside down in the best way possible…

The Trouble With Quarterbacks is an absolute fun read. I fell in love with Candace and her quirkiness instantly. I loved her dry British humor and sass. She was a total riot and she made my face hurt from laughing so much. That being said, she was also very real, told you like it was, and was just so easy to relate to. And then we’ve got Logan. He is an absolute SWOON! He’s famous but doesn’t let it go to his head. He’s reserved and private when it comes to his love life. But, don’t let that fool you. This sexy football player isn’t afraid to go after what he wants and what he wants is Candace. Together, these two were a lot of fun. You could feel their chemistry oozing off of the pages and it left me dying for their next interaction. I loved all the little will they/won’t they moments and the steamy ones in between.

The Trouble With Quarterbacks was a perfect read and I can’t say enough about it. The characters pull you into their story and leave you begging for more. The secondary characters are just as much fun and add so much to the story. I loved the friendships between Candace and her roommates and how they just got her and didn’t judge her. As I stated before, Logan was the perfect boyfriend. He was swoon-worthy, romantic, and just a total surprise.

The Trouble With Quarterbacks knocked me off my feet in the best possible way. It was hilarious. It was swoon-worthy. There was some angst and some perfectly blended, yet light drama. But, most of all, there was a romance that had you rooting for the characters to find their way to a happily ever after. I loved every single moment of this story, from beginning to end, and had an absolutely fabulous time getting swept up in Logan & Candace’s story.

What did I even read? Ugh I hated this book. I could not STAND these characters. . .

also r s grey trying to write a British mc. DONT! it felt like she went and copied all the slangs and different words the Brits have ever used and just made sure she used them as much as possible. IT WAS CRINGE.

Also I couldn't stand the main women mc. She was annoying and so daft sometimes? and did some of the most dumbest thing ever. I have no idea how she was a teacher. Because half of her clueless monologue was moronic? Like man you're from the UK not the caves eras. Like she was so Oh I DONT KNOW HOW THE WORLD WORKS. Oh surprise omg lemme fight some paparazzi, because sure they will listen to me.

And her mom was showing her baby pictures to the hounding press at their door just cuz she was proud.? Who the fuck is that dumb?

The main male mc was also kinda a piece of mysogynistic arse. .

And it was like Orpah, because every character in this book was told " oh you get insta love and you too and oh you there you get it too "" 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

This was a super fun and fast paced read. Perfect to pick up anytime when you’re in the mood for a steamy and lighthearted romance.

Candace was such a fun MC! She mostly always has #nofilter which results in the most hilarious things said and happening. And then there’s HIM; a sexy quarterback who balances on the edge of being super romantic and caring as well as showing his more dominating side during the more steamy scenes. Loved it, prrr

Aside from the main characters whom I both really liked, the minor characters were a good addition as well. They made for the most hilarious dialogues and scenes together and I would’ve loved to read separate books about their developing romances as well.

Conclusion
So if you’re looking for a steamy, laugh out loud romance, this is definitely a book you want to pick up and give go! Rachel’s writing is as always addictive and she doesn’t disappoint.

It’s not super emotionally heavy which I really liked. It stays a bit superficial sometimes, but that didn’t spoil the fun though, but therefore I’ll give it 4 stars instead of 5.

Thanks to the author for providing me with an e-arc of this book. My opinion is entirely my own and not influenced by the fact that I got an arc.

It's been awhile since I read an RS Grey book and I do not know why. I forgot how much I enjoy her romance books. They are always so much fun and this one was no different.

Candace was freaking adorable. Quirky, British, and a bit of a mess. She's working two jobs - sometimes three - to make ends meet. And while she loves her job as a teacher, she wishes it paid a little more. But then she meets the hunky uncle of one of her kids and suddenly everything changes. Because of course he turns out to be a Superbowl winning quarterback that the public adores. And while Candace is content to drool at him from afar, Logan has something else in mind.

This was the perfect blend of humor and romance. The characters were real and nothing felt forced. I rooted for them from the get go and enjoyed watching their wild ride. Her roommates were a little much but they just added to this hilarious cast of characters. It was just so much fun and one that I would definitely recommend to sports romance fans :)
