Peri lives an extremely sheltered life with an overprotective mother, and resorts to learning about the world through books and video clips.

Also mentioned in my August wrap up video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GttOu...

Until one day she meets a boy from the mainland.. turns out her mother's been keeping quite a few secrets from her.
If you like nature and you're an animal lover, and you like fantasy books with magic systems - then this book is for you.

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Lovebookstours.

Earthlings: The Beginning is the first book in a captivating new series about the world being on the verge of extinction.
This book drew me to it by the cover and blurb but was much, much more than I was expecting (in a good way).
I loved how the author cleverly wove animal cruelty and a flip of the food chain as we know it.
Peridot is the main character in earthlings. We meet her when she is 13 years old and she grows within the book. Peridot is very nieve having being kept in seclusion on an island with her mother for her whole life. A stranger arrives and life as she knew it changes.
The magic elements within this book are fantastic and I enjoyed how this book developed. I can't wait to see what's in store in book 2!

Earthlings The New Beginning by Ray Star
I give this book 4.5 stars

Peridot has lived a sheltered life. Raised on a remote island off the coast of England .Her mother unveils on her 16th birthday why they live in hiding, the mainland isn't safe for their kind - they are born of magick. The power to control earth, air, fire, water and spirit; an Elemental. On her quest to learn the whole truth and find her only friend, Peridot leaves the island.Life on the mainland is unlike anything she could have fathomed possible, humanity is enslaved, and the remaining species are in charge. Peridot finds herself thrown into a world she wasn't prepared for, caught amongst an ongoing battle between those trying to save humanity and the tyrants seeking to keep them enslaved. Struggling to command magickal abilities she doesn't fully understand or know how to control. Within Peridot's grasp is the chance to save the world, and earth knows, the world needs saving...

The first thing ld like to say is that the author is planting 1 tree for every book sold and campaigning for eco friendly book publishing.

I simply couldn’t stop reading this brilliant and captivating story,it is action packed, with plenty of pace and the enjoyable touch of magick! I fell in love with Peridot immediately and didn’t want the book to end. One of the best things about the book is the clever way the author gives you a great deal to think about (l can’t say anymore because l don’t want to spoil it)
A definite recommended read.lm waiting in anticipation for book 2 of the trilogy.

I absolutely frigging LOVED this book. Which is crazy because I read the prologue and genuinely thought..no way?! I'm not sure I can get on board with imagining this. But I did with ease.
*
I don't want to say too much because I think the not knowing made this book for me. The brief version is that the world has changed to how we know it to be. The human race has depleted and is T risk of distinction. Meanwhile, on an island closed of to the rest of the world is a little witching who could be the answer to earth's prayers!
*
This is an amazing advocate for bringing to light animal cruelty. As I was reading it, I was disgusting at what was being done to the humans which made me think...oh wait...so it's done the job in lot of way. I need to educate myself of the process of mass production of meat and dairy.
*
Honestly, give this book a read! I adored it! Not to mention the fact it turned up neatly wrapped and with a book mark!

Thank you to @raystarbooks and @lovebookstours for this gifted copy. Please please please when is the next one?!

Earthlings is an interesting young adult fantasy with magical elements. The concept of this book is that our lives as we know them are flipped. Animals are at the top of the food chain. Our MC, Peridot, lives on a secluded island with her mother and is unaware of this until a stranger shows up.

The prologue, while interesting, was kind of confusing. Although things do make sense once we go to the start of the story. I loved the magical elements; the darker bits not so much.

Peridot was a well-developed character. She’s determined and loyal, however, because of her upbringing, she’s also a bit naive.

Overall, I really liked Earthlings, it was different from what I’ve read before, and by the time I got to the ending I was thoroughly engaged in the story and I’m curious to see what happens in the next book!

Honestly this was so powerful! Ray has created such a horrifying world where animals rule over humans…however, this made me think so much about how we actually treat animals, as well as parts that really made me realise we take the earth for granted in so many ways.

This story just kept giving and giving. Each chapter brought on fresh horrors of the world and more insight into Peridot’s magical powers. I love anything about witches but this took it to a new level by including the elements in such an apt storyline.

The creation of tension throughout was amazing, I binged most of this in about 4 or 5 hours which I think speaks for itself! The pace and story keeps you on the edge of your seat right up to the end…I didn’t know what to expect and can’t wait for the next book! It has to hurry though

Thank you Ray for this masterpiece and for creating more awareness about the environment and taking the steps to plant trees and recycle. You’re amazing!

The concept of this book is very interesting, basically we have flipped the food chain. Although I did find it very difficult to imagine a chicken called Alan as new ruler of the world.
I did love how even in this alternate world, dogs were still right by the humans sides, forever loyal.
I also really enjoyed the magical elements of this book and found it so interesting seeing spells being cast, lotions and potions being made and how the characters introduced crystal use into these routines aswell.
I think my main issue with this is that at first I thought it was perfect for a younger teen, as Peri starts out at 13, but as we jump in time and some darker topics are introduced I became a bit less sure who the target audience for this book would be.
But overall an easy read and it was definitely an interesting concept, and left on a bit of a cliffhanger making you want more.

Peridot's life has been super sheltered. Growing up with an overprotective mom on isolated island, she's basically clueless about the outside world. That is, until Euan shows up and starts spilling some serious secrets.

Peridot and her fam aren't your typical fairy tale magic users. We're talking legit, old-school magick - the kind where you can actually control earth, air, fire, water, and spirit.

Once she steps outside her comfort zone, Peridot's mind gets totally blown. The world is way darker than she ever imagined. Humans are basically living under the thumb of a seriously nasty dictator, and there's a rebellion brewing that could change everything.

Turns out, Peridot might just be the wild card that humanity needs. If she can figure out how to control her crazy powerful magick in time, she could be the game-changer that saves everyone from a totally messed-up future.

The stakes? Nothing less than saving the entire world - and trust me, this world seriously needs saving.

As for the review:

Can we talk about these book covers for a second? They are absolutely *stunning* - the kind of artwork that stops you dead in your tracks at a bookstore. I'm talking designs that practically jumps off the shelf and demands your attention. Whoever designed these covers knows exactly how to create visual magic that makes readers think, "I have to know what's inside this book."

Star's approach to "Earthlings” is seriously impressive, especially when it comes to handling sensitive themes like animal cruelty. It's so easy for authors to get this wrong - to either beat readers over the head with a message or completely sidestep the issue. But Star? They found this incredible sweet spot. The narrative weaves these complex topics into the story so naturally that you're learning and feeling without ever feeling preached to. It's like the social commentary is seamlessly baked into the storytelling, not awkwardly sprinkled on top.

The world-building is where this book truly shines. Star has created this rich, complex world that feels both familiar and completely original. The magic system isn't just another run-of-the-mill magical framework - it's got depth and clear rules that make it feel almost scientific in its approach. You can tell the author spent serious time thinking through how this magical world operates, and that level of detail makes the entire reading experience so much more immersive.

Character-wise, nothing feels flat or one-dimensional. Each character seems to have their own motivations, their own inner complexity that goes way beyond typical genre tropes. They're not just moving pieces in a plot - they feel like real people with real struggles.

And yeah, there are some darker moments that add real weight to the narrative. But they're balanced - not gratuitous, just authentic to the story being told. It's the kind of nuanced storytelling that respects the reader's intelligence.

Honestly? I'm already itching to grab the next book in the series. If this instalment is any indication, I'm in for one heck of a ride… and I’m totally here for it.

Imagine if our lives were flipped around and suddenly animals were in charge…

This is exactly what happens in Earthlings. But our protagonist has no idea; she has been living with her mother on an island, unaware of what the world has become, until a strange boy shows up…

The prologue of this book is… weird. It’s very surreal and - although I also hate chickens - a little confusing.

However, once the author takes us back to the start of the story, it makes more sense and is really enjoyable. At times shocking, disturbing and magical, it comes together well.

There are parts of it that might feel a little bit ‘preachy’ to an avid carnivore; it goes into a lot of detail about battery farming and animal cruelty which may make people feel uncomfortable.

While I can respect this side of the book, I was drawn to the magic that looks at nature and the strength of the elements.

Peridot is a great character. She’s stubborn, determined and loyal. Yet she’s also inexperienced and flawed; at times, her powers cause more damage than good. We learn about the world through her eyes; until she becomes aware of something, we too are blind. Her mother is intriguing; no doubt there’s a backstory but she isn’t likeable at all.

The real charms of this book are the dogs. Phoenix, Freyja and the other canines are brilliant characters who really lift the story and make it relatable. With carnivorous chickens causing chaos, the dogs show that hope remains and all is not lost.

While the book might make you reconsider your lifestyle, its cliff-hanger ending will definitely make you want to read the next instalment!

This took me two sittings to read from cover to cover.
Total silence and no disturbances allows me to disappear off into the pages of the book and the world that they create.
I was completely absorbed by the story. The twists and turns kept me connected to the characters, their environment and the events as they unfolded and developed.
The release of Book II cannot come quick enough. I need to know what happens!

I listened to the audiobook and loved the narration by Albion Byrd and Paul Hunt. I thought they really brought the characters and story to life.

The story follows Peridot, a 13-year-old girl who lives on farm on an isolated island. She has no friends and is desperate to go to school. She loves to watch films and imagine what the world outside must be like. One day, a boy from outside arrives and turns everything upside down. She realises her mother has been lying to her, and the world beyond is unlike anything she could imagine.

I went into this fairly blind and was fully invested within the first few minutes of the story. I thought the author cleverly explored the topic of animal cruelty and how much damage humanity has caused to the natural world. This was done in such a thought-provoking way. One second, you are shocked by the horrors humanity is facing, and then it dawns on you that this is what we do every day without batting an eye.

I really loved the main characters who each had their own quirks and personalities that felt believable. The narration added to this as they each had their own distinct voice. I liked that we got to discover the world and magick at the same time as Peridot does, layer by layer.

The story had a lot of things I love, world building, magick, talking animals, dystopian landscapes, and world saving vibes. The ending has me wanting more, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series... also, you have to love a chicken dictator called Alan!

A great listen and I highly recommend to those who like fantasy reads.

I also think it is lovely that the author is invested in eco-friendly printing and is planting trees for every book sold.

With huge thanks to the author, publisher, and Love Books Tours for providing a copy of the book to review .

"You are one of a few gifted people left in the world Peridot. You are like me, and a few, extremely rare, incredibly special people left in existence. You are born of magick. An Elemental."

Peridot grows up lonely. On the deserted island she lives with her mother, a gifted Healer, there are only two other people, who help work their farm. Aside from her dog and the farm animals, Peridot has no one to talk to.

Then one night, a young, frightened and freezing boy appears at her window. Peridot decides to help him, though he's petrified of her mother, who he calls a witch. He makes claims about the wider world, ones that make no sense to Peridot – about cataclysmic events that make it a dangerous place for humans, one in which they are fodder for animals.

When Peridot's mother reveals she's able to do magick, she also binds her daughter from discovering what is beyond the island until she is sixteen and supposedly able to process it better. But not before Peridot accidentally transports her new-found friend away from the island and back to the horrible place he came from. Peridot vows she'll find Euan again as soon as she can. But years pass and she has no idea where to start.

The blurb of this book showed so much promise but right from the start, I thought this might not be for me. It begins with murderous talking chickens chasing someone until he decides to jump off a building. In fact, most of the animals featured in this book (and there are many) can talk and prefer to keep humans as food and sometimes pets. I could not wrap my head around this. Perhaps it was the delivery. I just could not take this seriously and I have a pretty good imagination. The chickens didn't frighten me for example. They made me want to laugh with incredulity.

It's very clear that the author adores animals and is likely a vegan. That's a beautiful thing. I just didn't find the plot very believable. Certain aspects were just too outlandish for me. I thought I was going to read a book about magic and while there is some, the plot focuses mostly on the flipped-world scenario. I think I might not be the intended audience and so for me, the whole thing fell flat and I struggled to finish.

Can you imagine a world where the animals rule the world? Eating and using humans? This is the world of Earthlings, a dystopian world where anything is possible but only a human/animal alliance can change it. Ready?
I’ll start saying that this is the first book of a series (trilogy?), so, it has a cliffhanger at the end, of course! But believe me, even knowing this I couldn’t resist to dig in and discover the amazing world the author, Ray Star, has created.
In this story we have two human main characters and multiple animals to accompany them, Peri and Euan. They will not share much adventures in this first book, they will show us how they meet and how Peri’s world will change after meeting him. Because, the world has changed, but Peri is isolated in a remote island and nothing from the outside can enter, so she thinks the world is like we know… normally in a weird way. So, discovering magic, talking animals and cruelty will become something that will mark her forever.
I really don’t want to spoil much of the plot, just believe me, even if I am not vegan it makes me think about how we really treat the animals we share the space in this world. We are really cruel, don’t you think? Maybe with this book, asidee from giving the reader an amazing story to enjoy, it will make us change how to make the animal’s life easier and change a little bit about how we treat them.
I really can’t wait to read the second volume of this series, I loved it!

This book is everything I wished for and much more. I can't describe the whirlwind of emotions I've been during every twist and that ending! I'm falling for the book all over again which I simply adored even before I read it.
It has everything: strong and interesting characters, animals and humans living alongside and striving for a better future for them all. It has a main character who will die for the animals, just like I would, because we are equal, we all are earthlings and we need to live peacefully together.
It has elemental magick, which is the most interesting and desirable for me.
I can't wait to read more from this trilogy, and we get a prequel too, to see how it all started!
For dog's sake I need Dominion in my life!

Welcome to a new world, a world where animals rule since The Changing and humans have been enslaved. By enslaved I mean quite literally enslaved. Peridot lives on a remote island off the coast of England with her mother and surrogate grandparents. She’s never left the island and is unaware of the outside world. On the night of her thirteenth birthday a boy called Euan appears at her window. Euan is from the outside world and they quickly become friends. Peridot is not a normal teenager because she has powers. She is an Elemental who can work with the elements of nature. She doesn’t realise how powerful her powers are until she accidentally uses her magic and Euan disappears. She tries everything to bring him back but to no avail. When Peridot turns 16 she decides to venture to the main land to find him. Will Peridot find Euan? When she’s introduced to the outside world how will she react and feel?

I was so pleased when I found out that I had a place on this book tour because the book just sounded like it was going to be a magical and memorable read. It was definitely both of these. I have to admit that the first page had me in fits of giggles because of Euan’s tirade about chickens and I will never look at a chicken the same way again. Earthlings was a fantastic read and the author had done an amazing job in bringing to life this new world in the pages of the book. It’s both a terrifying and thought provoking world. The storyline was engaging and interesting so much so that it was difficult to stop reading at times. Peridot was a fascinating character. Although she has been cocooned and protected by her mother she is still very curious about the world around her. I loved how she is named after a crystal which gave her character a very magical feel from the outset. As the story progressed the reader gets an insight into how powerful Peridot truly is and that she is destined to practice magic, with the potential to surpass her mother with her powers. The fight scenes were well written and the ending had me on the edge of my seat so I am desperate to read the next book.

I would describe this as an Animal Farm esque story for the 21st century. So if you love YA dystopian books then read this one quick!

I was sent a copy of this audiobook for review.

This story explores a world where animals get the upper hand and enslave humans in retaliation for their treatment throughout history. It also brings in elements of earth magic (magick) and mythology with certain humans being gifted witches/warlocks with the ability to manipulate the powers of earth, air, fire, water, and Spirit. Peridot is the female protagonist who has lived a sheltered life on a remote island who then learns what has befallen the humans in the outside world after a boy called Euan turns up on the island. Peridot discovers that not only is she a witch but an Elemental which is rare making her very powerful and import to humanity’s future.

When Euan is unexpectedly put in danger, Peridot leaves her protected home to rescue him. She encounters a hostile environment in the real world created after the uprising of the animals which shocks her to her core. On her journey of self-discovery while rescuing Euan, Peridot will have to choose sides, harness her powers, and find allies if she wants to ensure her survival and helping to change the fate of the human race.

I was intrigued by the premise of this book as animal welfare is deeply important to me. This book was beautifully written and portrayed the plight of many animals in the world today. Twisting the narrative on its head and attributing the meat industry’s processes on humans drives home how bad the practices can be and how much pain and suffering the majority of farmed/factory farmed animals/birds can endure. The author references the documentary Earthlings in her afterword, and I felt it was a very relevant to this book. It was such an impactful documentary to me that I switched to being Vegan overnight. I loved Peridot as she went from blissful ignorance to shocked awareness and instead of running away from the truth, she headed straight into danger to save those in need. The use of magic and communicating with animals was creatively done and added depth to the story. As this book ended on a cliffhanger, I eagerly await book 2.

A heartwarming tale of a spirited, lovable heroine! And the dystopian setting is both fascinating and scary—a whole new perspective on our own world and our relationship with animals. It's a unique premise that deals with themes we hardly ever see in literature and media.

The protagonist, Peridot, is inspirational with her determination and empathic nature—the reader can't help but root for her. She would never give up on her mission to find her friend no matter what is thrown at her. All the characters are realistically fleshed out, and the animals are quirky and adorable. The magic system that involves elements, teleportation and herbalism brought to mind both Harry Potter and Avatar the Last Airbender.

The story presents scenarios where there's no easy way to do the right thing—and the tragedy of war, where one has no choice but to cause harm to protect those you care about. The plot flowed from beginning to end seamlessly with an unexpected ending that makes one want to dive into the sequel! This was an entertaining read with so much food for thought!

Review:
First of Rayyy this book was incredible! I loved it the world building was beautiful, the characters are written like actual humans and all have flaws and issues. They’re not perfect, they’re believable and easy to love, and hate, yes Val I’m talking about you😡 but can we please talk about the cliffhanger?!? Was it really necessary?!?!? WHY RAY WHY?!?!?

Ray has taken complex issues that we face in the world today and spun them on their head to put humans at the receiving end of the punishment to show just how unjust and unfair it is. Her writing style left me curious for more and screaming internally with rage.

This book will blow your mind! It’s so well written and the incorporation of magik and crystals and witches made it the perfect fall read! Pls go read this!!

I would also like to point out that this is not the genera of book I would normally read, in fact I procrastinated starting this book because I was convinced I wasn’t going to like it😬 but once I read the first 3 chapters I was so engrossed I struggled to put it down! Earthlings pulled me in and captivated me while I read it! And you really should to!!

For lovers of:
- Witches
- Magic
- Animals who talk
- Rebellions
- Adventure
- Standing up for what you think is right

What a beautiful start to this fantastic series! Earthlings:The Beginning is the first book in the Earthlings series and after finishing listening to the audiobook, I’m now desperate to dive into book 2!
Hats off to the narrators Albion Byrd and Paul Hunt for such an amazing experience!

Although fantasy is a genre I don’t read often, I was instantly hooked by the description, involving magick and animals and the connection to nature. As a vegan, an animal lover, a worshipper of Nature and a nature conservationist, this book has everything I love and more!

The world building is amazing (and credible too if I’m honest), the characters are well rounded and evolving as the story goes and the action is fast paced and compelling.

I love Peridot, and I must say that her relationship with her mum is so similar to my mum and mine, that I really felt for her. I also loved how the author managed to let us readers fall in love with Euan and his friendship with Peridot, to then abruptly take it all away very cleverly.

I can’t even begin to praise what the author has done with the animals and their behaviour, and the situations they have put the humans in. The only way for humans to understand what we do to animals every day, is to make them experience it and this is superbly executed in this book. I have to say that although chickens in particular are the enemy in this story, I 100% understand their behaviour, and don’t blame them one bit. As it’s mentioned in the book, they learnt this from us and how we treated them, and when your experience of life has only been violence and abuse, you can only go on to behave the same, and exact revenge whenever the occasion presents itself.

If you love fantasy books with animals, magick, elementals and familiars, framed by a wild world building and full of twists and action, this is a great series to add to your tbr! I know I’ll be buying all the books!

Thanks to the author, The FCM Group publishing and Insta Book Tours for the audiobook and this is my honest opinion.

Despite some issues with editing which confused me a little, where sentences are out of place-most likely a ebook formatting issue, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

The magic system is so authentic but with a fantasy twist-herb lore, crystals and working with elements meshes well with inner magic, ancestry, and uncontainable power.
The world is richly described and a great but not heavy handed way of flipping this so called hierarchy we have in the animal kingdom.

I was a it worried about whether I would enjoy this book when I realised the main character was only 13 but as she aged quite quickly I found myself engrossed in her story and eager to read on.

Cannot wait to read book 2 and join back up with Peridot, Euan, Phoenix, Freyja and the rest of the crew!

When I first started this book, I was questioning everything, like what does Ray have against chickens?!

Then as I read on and loved every second not wanting it to end, I to now dislike chickens!

I had so many emotions reading this, sadness, happiness, annoyance, anger, disappointment, love and I did have a laugh or two!

Really recommend this book!! Can't wait to read the rest!!

It was such an interesting read! The opening scene alone got me laughing way too hard -- but turns out it's not a comedy book, although yes there are funny moments. Still.

On serious note, I like it a lot! Peri is sheltered almost all her life, but that changed when a strange boy appear on her window. Euan's arrival sets up a lot of things in motion and secrets to unravel. I love Phoenix and Freyja! The world building was nice and I love companion-bonding the witches have! THAT ENDING THO. Def need the 2nd book ASAP!

Have you ever come across a book that was completely unexpected and hit you way harder than you were prepared for? This is exactly what happened to me with Earthlings. I feel so lucky to have been part of the review tour ☺️

In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that if I saw this book on a shelf in a shop, I'd probably skip past it, however, I was contacted about reviewing this book and sent the above description and I was immediately intrigued. I'm guilty of frequently cover-buying and this example has made me stand back a little and read synopses before deciding on a book.

I really don't know where to start with reviewing this book - I am slightly speechless!

I guess the general plot is a pretty good starting point. Earthlings is a coming-of-age novel set in a world turned upside-down by the irresponsible nature of mankind. Peridot is our female protagonist who has been separated from the mainland chaos, living on a small island with only four (human) inhabitants. This brings me to one of my favourite aspects of Earthlings - the relationships between characters. The book really emphasises the idea of found family and beautifully portrays the disparities between truthful, trusting relationships and relationships controlled by fear and mistrust. Ray Star spends a nice chunk of the book really focusing on Peridot and her relationship with others and the world around her.

During the first third (or so) of the novel, we get to watch Peridot growing up. Sometimes I feel that authors who do this kind of coming-of-age change the character too much in the child to teen transition. I mean we all know that teenagers tend to be portrayed as grumpy but I really enjoyed that Peridot truly felt like an older version of the character we first met. She has her mood swings but her core personality was well kept and I found it easy to follow her growth.

In and amongst Peridot's journey through to adolescence, the book is filled with quirky references to the world as we know it (from modern film to bacon sandwiches)! In addition,  issues such as global warming, animal cruelty and mass farming are addressed in a way that feels properly relevant to the story, rather than in a forceful fashion. Some scenes are a little graphic in terms of what they represent, however, Ray has done a fantastic job of ensuring the message is received without being off-putting. This makes for a thought-provoking read whilst the reader is still submerged in a dystopian-type magical world. I also love that the ethical underpinnings of the book aren't just empty words: Ray is planting a tree for each copy sold and copies are printed on recycled paper!!

I've probably made the book seem very serious and depressing from my review so far but this was so not to case. The general tone of the book is, on the whole, lighthearted and actually quite funny at times. The character's internal dialogues are relatable and humorous, and dialogues between characters are done beautifully, feeling authentic and allowing a true feel for the relationship between the characters.

The ending of the book had be on the edge of my seat with my heart in my throat! I'd grown so connected to the characters that I so desperately want things to work out for them and I am certain that the wait for book two is going to be filled with anticipation!

I had no idea what to expect from this book. But WOW! That was some read!

I loved the cover of this one. Isn't it awesome, and between that and the blurb, I jumped straight in.

There was something so very different about the whole idea of this book, combined with the authors writing and the way it made me feel.

Think a dark, coming of age dystopia read with added magic, animals, found family and a completely twisted new system of rule for the world.

The prologue of this book just sets you right off knowing this book is something else and I was more hooked with every page I tuned.

I loved the FMC Peri, and how she dealt with finding out that EVERYTHING she thought was real in the world, wasn't. Her strength, kindness and determination was a really important part of this story and had me routing for her all the way.

So many extra aspects of this story that was brilliant. The HUGE twist in the world, the dogs as her friends, and her relationship with Euan.

I whipped through this. Like raced through it. Thankfully, I have book two to delve straight into next.

Highly recommend this one!

I received this book from Love Book Tours for a book tour. All thoughts are my own

Thank You to Sofia at Midas for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Although this book is a YA Fantasy, it definitely also falls into the dystopian catagory also.

Peridot, the main protagonist, has lived a very sheltered/isolated life in an island with her mother. She knows the world, her world to be like the world we know it to be now. But beyond her island the world is dramatically changed. It is the reverse of what we know now.

Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain. Animals are, and they talk! Add to that an elemental magic that Peri cannot control and it makes for a very interesting read.

Peri has the ability to save the world but she must face those who want to keep the world as it is, with humans enslaved.

The book definitely made me think a lot about how humans treat animals and whether this book might make people think about the treatment of animals.

I can wait to see what the next book has in store for us.

Oh wow! This is such an amazing story and first part of a trilogy. Peridot lives on a small island with her mum, her mum’s friends Ann and Joseph and a small collection of animals. Peri lives a happy life but is plagued by the same falling nightmare again and again. When she turns thirteen, her mum gives her some special gifts, promising to tell Peri some truths she has been hiding from her. But then a young boy shows up, cold, dirty and terribly thin, and all of Peri’s attention focuses on him. Soon Peri and the boy Euan are friends but when something goes wrong and Euan disappears, Peri is determined to get him back, no matter what, even if it means leaving the island and facing the dark and dangerous world beyond.

This is such a brilliant story and I just couldn’t put it down after the first pages. The book begins with an exciting prologue featuring some very angry chickens who can talk. After that we are introduced to Peri’s life on the island which seems very happy and normal. There are things about the world that Peri doesn’t know though and which her mum isn’t keen to share. Her mum’s determination to keep things from her leads Peri to get frustrated. When Euan shows up, it leads Peri to ask more questions and she begins to wonder exactly what truths her mum has kept from her. I will be honest and say that although I loved every moment of the story, the early parts of Peri’s life on the island did feel a little slow at first. I enjoyed getting to know what her life was like but the pacing of the story was slower here than the rest of the book. However the story and the things that happened were good and it kept me interested in reading throughout.

A lot happens in the story and after a few events happen when Peri is thirteen the story shifts to three years later, when Peri finally learns some of the secrets that have been kept hidden from her. The book really feels like a brilliant adventure story as Peri goes on her quest to find her friend. The things that were kept hidden from her are an interesting twist on our world today, and along with dealing with this new information Peri is also dealing with new magical abilities. Being a climate focused book I love how this story didn’t hold back at pointing out some of the terrible things that humanity today has done to nature today and the impact it can have for the future.

I don’t want to give away what happens as it’s far more interesting to find out as the story is revealed, but something has happened to the world and to all the animals in it and there’s a brilliant twist in some of what happens to the humans too. Peri’s adventure takes her across part of England and I love how so many things happen and how she copes with her new abilities. I like the magic that’s in the story, how much more powerful it is and what ends up happening to Peri and some aspects of that magic. All of the chapters in the book are from the first person perspective although some of the chapters alternate to different points of view and I love how we even get to see some of the scenes from the point of view of some of the animals, including Alan!

I love how this tale kept me guessing throughout as to what would happen. There was never a moment that wasn’t interesting and I love how so many things are revealed even towards the end, it just kept me gripped and turning the pages. The book has a dramatic ending with a bit of a cliffhanger end as so many things happen and we’re left wondering what will happen in the next book. I’m not a fan of books that end without some resolution but I did like the ending to this story though. I love what happens in those last pages and how you’re left with even more questions leaving you wondering what will happen in the next book. The story has nothing upsetting or offensive at all, only a few moments where there are a few shocks or characters getting hurt badly, but nothing that I’d consider difficult to read, other than the obvious things that this book makes you think about when it comes to the way we treat nature.

This has been such an amazing and thrilling read and I love how interesting the story is featuring talking animals and all sorts of terrible and amazing things happening to all of the characters. There are some moments that had me laughing, especially some of the moments with Fergus, and some sad moments too but overall this is just such an amazing story that it is still in my head days after reading it! I can’t recommend it enough to everyone, especially if you enjoy stories with animals or want to see an interesting twist which will make you think deeply about the way our world works today.

Earthlings: The Beginning follows Peridot as she comes to terms with the fact that she has magic and that the world as she knows it is vastly different to the one, she grew up on. The Earthlings is based on a very dystopian England in which chickens and cows are at the top of the food chain and are exacting their revenge on humans for their treatment before “The Changing”

“Every creature that inhabits the Earth is an Earthling”

I found this book to be very fast paced, especially towards the end in which we faced a showdown between The Resistance and those in charge, it was also very engrossing, and it felt like a bit of a shock novel in places. The book is predominately from Peridot’s perspective, until roughly 60% in where other characters begin to have their own chapters and narrative.

There are a large number of characters to keep up with throughout the book, and some of them could have more development, which will hopefully come from the sequel. My favourite characters have to be Phoenix and Fergus, I just love both of their fiercely protective traits, I found that the author did a great job in describing a lot of the animals' personalities. I also found it really sweet how dogs are still considered man's best friend in this dystopian world, some of them are still loyal to a fault. My least favourite character is Val, the way that she treats her daughter is overly protective, and
I feel that she is the reason Peri found herself is so many difficult situations, I hope that Val has a heart to heart with Peri in the next book, and their relationship is developed as a better one.

Earthlings seems like quite a shock novel in places, as it does become quite dark, I am a bit unsure
on the target audience with this book, as even though Peridot is originally 13, it is a lot for such a young character to take it, additionally there are numerous scenarios that humans are described to be in, that come across as very inhumane, yet once you realise these are the same situations animals find themselves, it creates a shocking lightbulb moment in which you question a lot of things within the current world, such as humans being segregated into those who are workers, those who are food
and those who are used for entertainment purposes such as racing and fighting.

The world building in this book is great, and the descriptions really make the world feel alive, I feel
there is an undercurrent of teachings in this book, especially with the author using the dystopian world to draw light to the treatment of animals, as well as to the treatment of anyone different, as the quote “turning a blind eye to it allows it to continue” really resonated with me. I found that the
ending was such an annoying cliff hanger ending that I honestly need the next book as soon as possible, I need to know if certain characters are okay!

So this book focuses on a young girl called Peridot and she lives on a farm with her mum, Joe and Ann, their dog Phoenix and their horses Amy and Roland. Their farm is on an island and they don't have any neighbours, they live a very sheltered existence! That is until a young boy called Euan finds his way to the island, and eventually the farm.
This is the day that Peridot's life changes forever. She soon learns that she is magickborn, not the sort of magic from stories and fables, but real magick from the days of old!
This is a great book, and a very interesting plot. I do love a good fantasy book and I'm glad to say that this did not disappoint! Although I have to say its not at all what I expected from the title or blurb, and actually I think thats a good thing because sometimes it can spoil a book by giving too much away. So I think that based on the blurb I had a preconceived idea that the book was about some kind of alien invasion, given it says that humanity is enslaved and there is an uprising on the horizon! But boy was I wrong!
What an amazing twist! I'm not going to go into too much detail because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so all I will say is that whilst there are some free humans like Peridot and her family, many others like Euan and his mother are not and are being held in captivity. Euan manages to escape and get to Peridot's family. As Peridot's powers start to emerge she may be the only one with the power to save humanity, but she needs to learn to control her powers if she is to come to humanities aid.
I love the pace of this book, there are lots of great plot twists, I really like the fact that the storyline is not something I have come across before, and as an avid reader that doesn't happen too often. I really like Ray's writing style and the characters are great, with lots of depth, their personalities shine through, there are some great laugh out loud moments, one in particular in the prologue and all I can say is that's an image that I won't soon forget! :)
And what an ending, talk about cliffhanger! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am looking forward to seeing how the plot and characters develop in book 2.

Earthlings is the story of 13 year old Peridot. Peri has lived a sheltered life on a secluded island with her mother on a sanctuary away from the mainland of England.
Peri and her small community are one completely with nature, the elements and magick. On her 13th birthday, Peri begins to learn of why they live such an isolated life and the truth of what is happening around the rest of the world is far worse than she can imagine. Humans are enslaved and animals are top of the food chain.
When a young boy stumbles upon their island seeking help, Peri finally has the friend she’s always wanted. But when her magick involuntarily sends Euan back to the mainland, Peri sets off on a dangerous journey to save him.

I have a few thoughts about this book! I did enjoy it and read it quickly.
It’s an interesting dystopian world where animals are in charge, laced with magic to give it a fantasy element. It definitely made me think. I enjoyed the fantasy element but found the animals out on top thing tough to imagine - particularly the chickens. I just couldn’t see an army of talking chickens and cows running the world. We’re half told of an event called ‘the changing’ occurring but this isn’t explained throughly enough for me to understand WHY animals can suddenly talk and organise themselves to a degree to overrun humans.

There’s a heavy vegan message throughout the book and some intense descriptions of human farming which is obviously intended to shock and make you consider our treatment of animals. I think this definitely would have an impact on a reader who isn’t already aware of the realities of animal agriculture.

I really understand what the author is trying to do and I think it’s an interesting idea, but I just needed more backstory as to how we *got* to where we are to fully immerse in this new world.
