The book of Genesis comes alive with this colorfully illustrated, scripturally sound, and kid-friendly retelling of the events and progression of creation. Questions for each day spark discussion between children and their parents and caregivers. A page is included to encourage families to begin their own Bible quilt projects. Additional faith building concepts pertaining to the Genesis account of creation are included.
The Creation is a retelling of earth's creation from the book of Genesis. It's a children's book retold by Janice D. Green made easy for children to understand. The illustrations are in quilt fashion and are fun, original, and colorful. It was a nice change of pace for a children's books illustrations. Janice D. Green does a spectacular job of re-telling Genesis. Not only is it easy for children to understand but each page is followed by a corresponding Bible verse or discussion question. My oldest son is four years old and in preschool. He not only listened with rapt attention, but enthusiastically answered all the discussion questions as we came to them. I felt this drew him in to understand the creation of things much more clearly. It caused him to think about the questions and come up with his answers, or even other questions if he wanted to delve into the matter more deeply. It was a really enjoyable read, and I think children ages 4-10 would best enjoy this book. This book would compliment any Christian home either to be used during story time, or in a homeschool setting. It would also make a great addition to a Sunday school class. Another wonderful aspect about this book is the back of the book holds a letter to parents remind us to hold fast in our teaching our children about God, and to keep them rooted in their faith. In an ever-changing world where answers are demanded for everything we must unite together and hold fast to our faith. There is a Bible Quilt family activity in the back of the book as well which I can't wait to try. It explains how to make a Bible quilt with Bible pictures for the blocks. It even explains how the Bible pictures can be traced and how your child can color them with crayons and take a part in the quilt making. There are much more details in the book, and the author includes a website that has directions for making Bible quilts and a coloring book download.

As a Christian Mom I never tire of reading books on the creation of God's making. Similar of course as they are taken from the Bible in their retelling. I enjoyed Janice D. Green's retelling of the Creation in her making it easy to understand for toddler to elementary aged children. She retold the verses in Genesis, illustrated with a quilt block Bible quilt concept. She asked thought provoking questions after each retelling of the Word, to get the child thinking about how creation has affected them personally. I loved how the first page was blank other than the words, when the earth had no shape and it was dark. Being a quilter I loved the concept of a Bible story quilt, which she derives her illustrations from throughout the book. I have worked on women of the Bible quilt blocks, and just love this idea of making one with the days of creation and progressing past that for the kids to utilize in memorizing Biblical stories, and wrapping them in the Word of God!
Beautifully done book! I received a copy of this book from Book Crash in exchange for an honest review.
The Creation is an interesting 24 page story made up of paraphrases written by the author to help children understand the creation account as recorded in Genesis. On each page there is a quilt illustration that matches the text, but the author also includes on the same page questions or information that will help bring about family discussion. The 7 days of creation are covered and will bring about in children a reconfirmation of God's existence in their lives on a daily basis. Religous families will love the the lay out of the story and children of all ages will enjoy the quilt illustrations that will bring about many hours of possible craft ideas at home.
Janice Green has done a great job of retelling the creation story in an entertaining and simple way that children will be sure to understand. The beautiful illustrations made from quilt segments add interest to this fine book. I would definitely recommend this book to parents just beginning to teach their children truths from the Bible.
OK, so I'm biased. I wrote this book. This is the second edition. I revised the illustrations, rewrote several of the pages, and added puzzles. The Creation (second edition) is available in three formats. This one is the full color picture book. It is also available as an e-book and as a coloring book. All three have the same basic text.
Each day of creation is presented in language children will understand, and includes engaging questions to enhance the child's imagination and experience what was created on each day. These pictures were drawn by Nancy Gordon, and I added the color using Photoshop for this book and the e-book. Coloring pages and puzzles are available as a free PDF download by following a link in the book, making The Creation is a valuable resource for children's ministry. Directions are also included in the download for using the coloring pages to make crayon-colored quilt blocks.
The author presents an excellent Biblical account of the creation, and she even gives guidelines to adults who want to make quilts that show pictures of the creation story.
Read to my 7 and 5 year old boys: Janice Green is a quilter. The illustrations she uses are actually quilt blocks she did in colorful fabrics related to the story. Usually, it bugs me when an artist skips the dinosaurs, but this book only has about 4 animals in the picture with Adam: of course there wasn’t space for the T-Rex! The main section of each short page of text is a “paraphrase” of the Bible. She just took the original words and simplified it to a young child’s level. Hebrew scholars would pull their hair out with some of what she leaves out, but they aren’t the people Mrs. Green wrote for. Personally, I added little bits Mrs. Green had left out to every page, but I’m always doing that! What we enjoyed most, besides the pictures, were the questions at the bottom of each page. Basic things like “how do you feel in a dark place?” or “what is your favorite animal?” help kids connect. Others help them think through why God did what He did and how Adam and Eve must have felt after their sin. Each page of text had about four questions to get kids’ brains going. The Creation is a short book, only 16 pages of pictures and text, making it a pleasant one-sitting read. Each day of Creation gets its own illustration and word page closing with the account of Adam and Eve’s Fall. The book doesn’t get into how God planned to rescue them; you’ll need to discuss Jesus some other way, but that’s no biggy. I was pleased with how quickly my 5 year old understood the connection between Adam as “ruler” and how his sin affected the rest of creation. Wording big concepts like that for little ones isn’t easy! At the back, there’s a full page for parents with encouraging reminders of the importance of remembering God as Creator. Last is a page of ideas for making your own Creation Quilt and mini-bio of the author.
This is s simple, yet thoughtful, retelling of the creation story. The details are accurate, embellishment free and easy to read. Each day has a couple of discussion questions that children can engage with and think about, without feeling patronised. The illustrations are beautiful photographs of the author's 'Creation Quilt' and compliment the text well. The only thing that I felt wasn't necessary was the detailed note to parents. It includes some true but I felt unnecessary points that result in drawing away from the presentation of this book as one designed especially for children.
