Something evil hides within the House of Seven Gables… Phoebe Pyncheon hasn’t had an easy life. Alone and out of work, she does her best to make ends meet while she finishes her debut novel. But when even the monthly rent becomes too much for the struggling young writer to afford, she is forced to move in to her Great Aunt Hester’s boarding house. Known as the House of Seven Gables, this Victorian mansion is a maze of decrepit halls, musty old furniture, and faded glamour. At first, Phoebe feels at home in the strange, quirky old house. But soon she senses a presence lurking in the shadows, just out of sight. She hears it breathing in the darkness, feels its cold touch on her skin at night. Then the police knock on her door with news of a dead body found nearby. And Phoebe discovers the terrifying truth… The House of Seven Gables is a temple to an ancient evil, a terrifying power unleashed by Hester and her coven of friends. This dark entity haunts the stones of the old mansion, plotting its revenge upon the living. But a secret power hides within Phoebe as well. And releasing it may be her only chance to survive the terror that awaits her…

I don't know whether I received an updated version of the ebook or not, but I really enjoyed this creepy tale of a family's witchy dynasty and the horrific things perpetrated in the name of being all-powerful.
Obviously, if you've read the reviews, this book has polarised readers - you either love it ... or hate it. I found it to be fairly well written, with none of the problems complained about in previous reviews. I look forward to reading more of Dani Lamia's work.

I received a free ecopy of the novel via Bookfunnel and the author. I have voluntarily chosen to review the book and the gifting in no way influences my review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion.

I DNF around 80 pages in, so I'm not giving it a rating. But I will say what I read was bizarre and confusing (and not in a good way). The writing seemed clunky, and I didn't care for any of the characters. The blend of witchcraft and mythology felt strange, and I was not comfortable with the nonconsensual spell-induced romance.

I recieved a free copy of this book for an honest review.

This was DNF for me.
I did not get very far into it, which is why I don't feel it was fair to attempt a rating.
The dialogue felt so bizarre to me. As if the author wanted it read very poetic yet, it was so disjointed it just felt like everyone was drunk.
Maybe I will come back to it someday but, right now, I can't.

I love books with witches and possession and rituals and the occult. I can’t resist a story line with protagonists moving into large old mansions, meeting strange characters, and finding secrets in forgotten rooms. I love plots with family drama and/ or dark history within bloodlines. That being said, I wanted to love this book so much. The premise had me so excited—young woman aspiring to be a successful writer falls on hard times and moves in with her great aunt in an old Victorian mansion. Oh and this great aunt is part of an evil coven! Sounds like good fun right?!

Sadly the plot moved too slow for me in this one. I wanted MORE seances and evil magic and LESS of the protagonist having trippy dreams and doing housework. Plus, there were also some parts that felt—while not intentionally—homophobic. While I loved that the coven preferred the affections of women, the whole “villainous lesbian witches” trope just felt very problematic and harmful to me. There were some chapters where magic spells were used as a violation of many forms of consent, and though this is addressed near the end of the book, again, I feared this could still be a harmful portrayal.

There were still some good parts to the story that I enjoyed however, such as the underlying mystery of the House of Seven Gables, our protagonist Phoebe’s dig into the coven’s past, and even a strange boarder who specializes in disturbing paintings. If you still think you might wanna give this book a try, by all means give it a shot. Don’t let my opinion keep you from making up your own mind. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

(Thank you to the author for sending me this copy in exchange for an honest review.)

666 Gable Way is a sort of sequel, if you ,will, to Hawthorne's 'The House of the Seven Gables'. Is it necessary to read the original to enjoy this book? No. But it will certainly enhance the experience - if you don't already know the names Pyncheon and Maule, their appearance will be less dramatic than it should be.

The story itself centers around Phoebe Pyncheon, who has returned to her Great-Aunt Hester's house to beg room and board while she gets back on her feet. The infamous house is home to Hester and two members of her coven, as well as two male boarders. Things get freaky fast, with some mind-control, some intense dreams, seances, and you know, a gargoyle.

Phoebe must find it in herself to fight back against the witches, the house itself, and the curse of her own family name.

Good things: atmosphere - I mean, it's The House of the Seven Gables; a good bit of mystery and intrigue; a seriously tense climax.

Nitpicking the bad bits: the witches call themselves wiccans although Wiccans would probably not appreciate the way they are portrayed, also they are called wiccans even in 19th century flashbacks, and the term "wiccan" wasn't coined until the 1930s and only really come into the popular vocabulary in the 1950s; some phrases come across as strangely worded and trying to be too formal for this particular prose; and too many words wasted describing every single outfit change (including hair and makeup) that the characters go through.

Nitpicking aside, this was a good tense story of dark magic and the fight to make things right.

*I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

666 Gable Way is a perfect intersection of Victorian values and witchy séances, and a modern nihilistic attitude. Our millennial protagonist, Phoebe, is down on her luck and just trying to get her fantasy adventure novel written but clashes hard with her great aunt Hester and her witchy ways. A perfect combination of traditional witch characters with a more modern twist, 666 Gable Way is a dark and mysterious novel with a cast of intriguing and beguiling characters that is difficult to put down. A stuffy trio of palm readers, an artist who’s blood splattered works line the walls of every room, a witty Englishman who seems to have his own secrets, and now a young and cantankerous woman ready to rock the boat if needed.

Set in the backdrop of an ancient house that holds many secrets in its walls, readers are treated to a gothic styled mystery with modern characters and events, but where you still need to dress well for dinner. Shocking violence and violation are mixed surprisingly well with humour and tenacity. There is something for everyone in this book, and it is a testament to Dani Lamia and Frederick H. Crook’s writing, that everything is blended so well. It’s almost like witchcraft. Spells, hexes, séances, ghosts, possessions, and so much more take place in this boarding house slash psychic reading office, and it is only the strength, stubbornness, and passion of Phoebe that will get you through this book alive.

If you are looking for a modern witchy read I would highly recommend spending some time with Phoebe at 666 Gable Way and exploring the mysteries of the ancient and every watching house, and the secrets of the Pyncheon family.

My first big mistake and picking this book up from the library was that I didn't read the authors bio where she describes herself as potentially schizophrenic and that's why she writes "intellectual horror". First of all, I'm sure schizophrenia has a more politically correct title now and I'm almost 100% sure that people with schizophrenia don't find it as a useful tool for writing crappy low grade fiction. it's an actual affliction that affects lives and not a quirky trait to describe why you like spooky things.

Second of all the book is not scary. The prologue does its best absolutely demolishe any sort of mystery or intrigue the story has, so whatever curiosity for the cause of the misfortunes of the White Lake townsfolk, it does not by the end of XVII pages. Setting a precedent for the rest of the story, the prologue is predictable and cliché.

Phoebe herself is a boring heroine. She's kind of a joke, to be honest. She's got preternatural powers and, as a potential novelist, a heavily fortified confidence in her own writing, which is the most unrealistic detail of the novel and the prologue was about witches. I can't tell if the description of Phoebe's novel being about Judy the bad ass biker chick is supposed to be a joke or not, because the tone of the novel is just so that you can't tell if you're supposed to take that part seriously.

ultimately I was bored, underwhelmed, and sort of repulsed throughout most of the whole thing. The worst part of it by far was the fact that it takes place in my home state. there's a particular passage where one of the characters mentions Michilimackinac as potentially being home to artifacts and native American relics or some thing and I smacked the book against my head because, obviously. The idea of searching for Native American relics in conjunction with the theme of modern American or Eastern European witchcraft is another overdone trope that just becomes a boring one of many in this extremely sloggish story.

I was lucky to receive '666 Gable Way' by Danni Lamia. Lucky, not because I had my eyes on this book for a long time, but because this one, was a hell of a book.

The story follows Phoebe Pyncheon. An aspiring author trying to finish writing her first novel. Alone and unemployed trying to make ends meet, she moves to her great aunt's boarding house. A mysterious Victorian mansion, known as the House of Seven Gables.

What initially seems like a safe haven, will soon reveal itself to be the home of an ancient, unspeakable evil that haunts the rooms and corridors. An evil awaiting to be unleashed in the world.

Dark and utterly eerie, with equal parts of horror, mysticism and suspense, this lovely supernatural thriller will keep you good company... even after reading. A very interesting spin on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables

'666 Gable Way', is a beautiful, well written journey into a world steeped in witchcraft and mystery, we're secrets lie well hidden and the truth is even more dangerous.

There was a point early on that I almost quit reading this one, but instead, I kept going. Glad I did!

It didn't take long for it to grab me back in, then it held my attention for the remainder of the book.

If you like witches, secret powers, and a little family drama, give this one a try.

Preface: I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review
Actual ratings: 2.5 stars

The good: the prose was competent, and the nightmarish aspects of the book were well-illustrated. The beginning was gripping and haunting, and some of the characters felt real (Holgrave, mainly). I like the idea of the artist-guy's paintings, and everything with the gingerbread men was suitably creepy/disturbing.

The bad: woof. Let me put it this way. The villains are all women who love women. One of them seduces our heroine through dark magic. Our heroine then must choose between the eeeevil LGBT relationship, or the nice and bland hetero one.

Yeah.

Putting that aside, this book simply isn't that engaging. It reminded me a lot of Whickering Place - the pacing is very slow, and the main character has little to no agency for a large portion of the book. She has no idea what's going on, so she can't do anything to affect it. In the end, the victory isn't really even hers, but forces using her for their own agendas. Our protagonist is also extremely obnoxious and childlike, which made her irritating to read about - I would have almost wished for the witches to win, if they weren't so over-the-top (and, again, the terrible representation).

I would not recommend this book.

I have to empathize with poor protagonist Phoebe Pyncheon, who like an earlier (1905) distant relation is misunderstood and denigrated, treated by the "wealthy" elitist Michigan Pyncheons, owner of "the House of the Seven Gables," as a servant,  a veritable only-child Cinderella.  Phoebe loses her job, then her apartment; her car is almost useless.  What is left but the "kindness" of Aunt Hester, the fake-medium actual-sorceress?

[Note: Hester and her coven members refer to themselves as wiccans, but their practice and those of the Pynchon ancestors is black magic, not wicca.]

Phoebe Pyncheon has hit another rough patch. Her mother has been gone for years. Her most recent boyfriend dumped her after she lost her job. She has been evicted from her apartment and now has to go see if her estranged great-aunt will let her move in until she can get back on her feet. She has always been uncomfortable at her ancestral home, 666 Gable Way, but can't see any way to restart. She is down to an unreliable old car, two bags of clothes, and her computer. She plans to use her computer to become a novelist and has written her first book in record time and wants to complete the sequel before sending them off to be criticized. To do this, she needs a place to stay.
Strange things have always happened at 666 Gable Way. Phoebe is caught up in a mystery. Why are things so strange here, and what is Great-aunt Hester giving to the strange artist Mr. Onenspek.

I enjoyed the action and mystery of the story. It was well written and I felt like I got to know Phoebe and another character, Holgrave. There are an interesting group of people staying at 666 Gable Way, but these are the two I connected with the most. I hope there are more books in the series. I like the ending, but hope there are more adventures in the future.

The story of 666 Gable Way was not terrifying to me but it was interesting. It is a story about a house whose occupants are witches who must make deadly sacrifices to the house in order for their powers to grow and the house to survive. The story starts with a member of the head witch’s family being sacrificed; then fast forwards to present day and another family member , Phoebe being left jobless and evicted from her apartment. Phoebe must beg her great aunt for a place to stay. Her great aunt eventually lets her stay at 666 Gable Way; and soon all of hell breaks loose. I liked Phoebe but it bothered me that it takes her too long to catch on to what’s happening to her. Denial was definitely only a river in Egypt to her. I like the other characters as well and hope the author writes a sequel. This was supposed to be a horror story but I don’t scare easy; others however might find the blood and monsters too much to take and will only read this book in the daytime. I suggest that whatever time you choose to read it you should just read it. It is good.

I found this book to be extremely engrossing. When loss of her job forces Phoebe to freeload at her ancestral home with her aunt, her life is tipped upside-down. She comes to the house of seven gables and finds it full of strange and interesting people, including an eccentric painter. The characters are interesting and most have dark psychic powers. Phoebe's recalcitrant Chevrolet Caprice keeps her in trouble through the story. The writing is clear and straightforward. Danger seems to lurk on every page. The deeper I got into this story, the more engrossed I got. Often stories involving black magic tend to become boring, but that doesn't happen with this one. A blood-letting prologue sets the stage for continuing terror and gore. I received this book from Hidden Gems as a sample, and it turned out to be great.

Welcome to 666 Gable Way! Owned by the Pyncheon family for several generations, this house of the seven gables has been the sight of black magic since the very beginning. Evil lurks everywhere in this nightmarish house and its owner, Hester and her friends from her coven embrace this way of life. Unfortunate for Phoebe as she was raised in a much different fashion with a kind and loving mother. With no job, no money, no other family, she finds herself at Great aunt Hester’s mercy….and she is not the only victim. This is a very creepy tale of a very disturbing family. The more you read, the more sinister it becomes. It does end with the possibility of a second novel.

I enjoyed this suspenseful story. It is a well written story about evil and terror that awaits in the shadows. The characters are connectable and brought the twists and turns to a new level. They had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. I enjoyed how they made the story engaging and kept me turning pages. This is a fast paced story that is full of action that you don't want to miss. This is a great story that I really enjoyed. I highly recommend this book.

This is about Phoebe, who is a young writer who ends up moving in with her great aunt, who lives in a creepy old victorian mansion. Little does she know that her great aunt has many dark secrets. This was creepy and haunting…in the best possible way! It is full of witches, possession, occult, and rituals; which makes for the ultimate horror read! I really enjoyed the writing, the story, the strange characters, and the setting throughout this book. If you enjoy dark, creepy, and mysterious and eerie books about witches and seances I think you should give this one a try.

Phoebe, who is not the sharpest tack in the box, ends up down on her luck and depending on a great-aunt who hated her mother. She soon finds things aren't quite what they seem in the House of the Seven Gables.
The story moved rather slow but the frightening bits were well done. The supporting characters were suitably creepy and I suspected everyone for a while. I found myself devouring the ending.

Oh my if you are at all into the paranormal how could you not just jump right in when see a novel with an address that starts with 666? This was an enticing novel filled with all sorts of evil beings! Now I had to read with my bedstand light on, as I would never know when those evil beings might pop out and feel me with terror. If you are into horror I think this novel will be right up your ally.

The was the first book I read after years of not reading. By all means it’s a good book. It focuses on cults, witchcraft, murder mystery, spells and demons! So if you like that stuff you’ll like this book. I just personally think the ending felt a bit rushed. But none the less it’s not a bad read.

Just finished this one and wow this is a pretty good read! It has some serious haunted thoughts and creepiness in it. Honestly it was not what I was expecting and turned out to be a great story. This family is truly messed up as proven through the history depicted throughout the book. Highly recommend this fast paced and very intriguing book.

Phoebe's world is in shambles. She just lost her job, she's being evicted from her apartment. The only thing she enjoys is writing. When she goes to stay at her aunts home, all kinds of stuff start happening. How will Phoebes story turn out?

This was a very creepy read about a girl who goes to live with her great-aunt in an old family mansion. She experiences a number of things her rational upbringing hasn't prepared her for. I was left wondering if there was a sequel since some of the issues didn't seem fully resolved by the end.
