Beyond the Four Kingdoms Box Set Two

Rate this book
The final three interconnected stand-alone fairy tale retellings from the Beyond the Four Kingdoms series Book 4 - A Dream of Ebony and A Retelling of Snow White Snow has always lived under the shadow of her cruel stepmother, with only her beloved father and her childhood friend—the huntsman, Alexander—to make life bearable. When her father dies, she should be crowned queen, but instead she finds herself fleeing for her life. With no allies, no skills, and no food, her future could be over before it has truly begun. But there’s more at stake than just one life. If Snow can’t claim her throne, her kingdom faces destruction. Snow has to make a focus on her own salvation or put everything on the line—even those she loves the most. And if she’s going to succeed, Snow must fight the hardest battle of all, against her own doubt and weakness, and gain new skills and strength she never imagined possessing. Alexander is ready to help her. But if she lets him, the consequences might be more than she can bear—because her heart is in as much jeopardy as the kingdom. In this reimagining of the classic fairy tale, Snow must find her inner strength in time to fight for her throne before it’s too late. Book 5 - A Captive of Wing and A Retelling of Swan Lake Princess Adelaide has been missing for years. And that’s exactly the way she wants it. Haunted by her past, not even the curse that entraps her is enough to make her long for her old home. But her past finds her anyway, in the form of a handsome prince from her childhood. Adelaide doesn’t want to let Gabe in, but a sinister force is spreading fear throughout her new kingdom, and only Gabe has the will to help her. Adelaide can’t refuse his assistance—not when the evil might soon ensnare much more than a solitary princess. But with her friends and her new kingdom in danger, even the help of Gabe and her seven swans might not be enough. In this reimagining of the classic tale, Swan Lake, the trapped princess must find the courage to overcome her past if she has any hope of turning a tragedy into a happy ending. Book 6 - A Princess of Wind and A Retelling of The Little Mermaid Isla may be a mermaid princess, but she’s never felt at home in her undersea kingdom. Instead she dreams of the day her people can return to the surface—and the boy whose life she once saved. But while Isla foresees danger for her people beneath the ocean, she has no concept of the dark forces working to keep her people submerged. When an impetuous vow sets her on the course of the truth, Isla discovers that shadowy foes beset the kingdoms of both land and sea. And when she finally finds herself onshore, Isla realizes the fight will require not only her sword but her mind and heart as well—at least if she ever hopes to overcome her enemies and win the love of the prince of her dreams. In this reimagining of the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, the princess will have to grow beyond her dreams if she wants to save two kingdoms and her own heart. If you enjoy clean romance, adventure, and intrigue, then try the books in the Beyond the Four Kingdoms series now! These interconnected fairy tale retellings each feature a different princess who has to fight for her happily ever after. Melanie Cellier grew up on a staple diet of books, books and more books. And although she got older, she never stopped loving children’s and young adult novels.
She always wanted to write one herself, but it took three careers and three different continents before she actually managed it.

She now feels incredibly fortunate to spend her time writing from her home in Adelaide, Australia where she keeps an eye out for koalas in her backyard. Her staple diet hasn’t changed much, although she’s added choc mint Rooibos tea and Chicken Crimpies to the list.

She writes young adult fantasy including her Spoken Mage series, and her Four Kingdoms and Beyond the Four Kingdoms series which are made up of linked stand-alone stories that retell classic fairy tales.

I loved revisiting these stories through the medium of an audiobook. They felt so much more poignant the second time around.

4 - Snow White
(5 stars) I think this is my favorite of the series. I loved the character growth in Snow, how she struggled through her fears and insecurities, stepping into her calling and seeking to learn from and trust those around her. The love story was also much better/realistic than the standard fairy tale, since they were best friends from childhood and truly knew each other (rather than they meet and two weeks later: True Love! 😜). The book was engaging, exciting, and sweet.

5 - Swan Lake
(3 stars) I didn’t love this one quite so much. I’d actually say it was my least favorite of the entire series. The story seemed rather contrived and the romance/relationship underdeveloped. I also didn’t find Adelaide’s internal struggles quite believable, nor her sudden turnaround at the end.

6 - The Little Mermaid
(5 stars) I liked this one a lot, and appreciated how it delved into the difference between being “in love” with the idea of a person rather than the person themself. Having grown up on Disney’s version of the Little Mermaid, I was far more familiar with this tale than any of the others, and I think Cellier did an excellent job with it (certainly better than Disney). I also loved Ray’s character, and that Millie wasn’t left out.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series and highly recommend it to those who appreciate the lighthearted, softly-corny nature of a True Love romance ☺️

Content:
There’s no foul language or sex. The romance is clean and there was no real violence to speak of. There is mention of a High King (lands that have turned from Him are cursed) and the godmothers appear to act as gift-bestowing guardian angels… but I wouldn’t call it Christian.

A Dream of Ebony and White
Absolutely the cutest dwarves I've ever encountered, though a bit sad.
The character progression was believable, mostly.

A Captive of Wing and Feather
I would've enjoyed this one a bit more if the "Ugh, he's always xyz" had begun changing a lot sooner. Felt kind of like an afterthought, too late to be actually romantic. (Disclaimer: that's just my opinion, of course.)

A Princess of Wind and Wave
Awesome twist on the little mermaid story. I love how M.C. made things that irritated me about the Disney version make so much more sense.
The character had so much more room to improve than a lot of the other main characters in M.C.'s series, and I hope she eventually makes it.

I love this author’s retellings. A Princess of Wind and Wave was my favorite, and a great wrap-up to this generation’s love stories. It had a really nice epilogue that brought everyone together for a wedding and reunion.

The Swan Lake retelling wasn’t my favorite, even though I still enjoyed the characters. I also don’t know anything about Swan Lake, so if I had known some maybe I would’ve liked it more.

A Dream of Ebony and White was a great Snow White retelling, and I loved it! I’ve got individual reviews for each of these books, as well.

Was difficult to put the boxed sets down!

I didn’t take the time to review between stories or boxed sets! I hardly slept some nights! Melanie Cellier has re-woven these tales seamlessly and artfully. I love a good re-interpretation of favorite tales and having them told as interconnecting stories is the best! Thanks, Melanie.

Very Entertaining Fairytale Retellings

Highly recommend this box set, this author is very talented when it comes to drawing the reader into the story. Definitely recommend this author, she writes books that are suitable for young readers - my 11 yo daughter is able to listen to the audio narration with worry of anything inappropriate.
Definitely get the audio too!

Eloquent and Romantic

I loved the drama and she writes with so much character. Each character had their own specialized personality and she writes them with such emotion.

Book 4 - A Dream of Ebony and White - A reimagining of Snow White.
Book 5 - A Captive of Wing and Feather - A reimagining of Swan Lake.
Book 6 - A Princess of Wind and Wave - A retelling of The Little Mermaid.

I am loving Cellier’s world of princess stories. These three books are pretty epic! We encounter Snow in the first box set at the Princess Tourney, in her own book, A Dream of Ebony and White, she is pushed to her limits when she escapes her stepmother who tried to have her murdered. She fights to regain control of her kingdom. A Captive of Wing and Feather was an enchanting story for me as I did not really know the story of Swan Lake. It was so fast paced and I loved the seven swans that helped her throughout her story. Finally, A Princess of Wind and Wave, is Cellier’s take on The Little Mermaid. I love Isla as a character. She has many sisters but she questions everything and saves her kingdom from ruin.

The Beyond The Four Kingdoms box sets are amazing as they have great character development and they flow a little easier than the original Four Kingdoms books. A Dance of Silver and Shadow introduces all of the characters that you meet over the course of the six books. I love these worlds where women are strong and overcome their flaws. The moral messages are strong. This is a great series for adult readers and YA readers. There is no foul language so you could listen to the box sets with the family in the car too. I can’t wait to read the Return to the Four Kingdoms Series and the books that were not included in the box sets.
