Terraform Zero, a virtual reality colonization game, has swept the galaxy by storm. The Champions are household names that give humanity hope. Vee Miles believes she is good enough to compete amongst them, but the costly entrance fee is holding her back.

Enter the Earthian Planetary Exploration Division.

Still reeling from a publicity nightmare named Zeph, the corporation is desperate to change the public’s opinions toward Cyborgs. They offer to sponsor Vee. The EPED gets the PR boost, and she gets to keep the prize money. The EPED’s deal comes with strings though, and she has to pretend to be a made-up Cyborg shifting bear named Cypher.

A male that had the look of a Viking space warrior, with enough scars and otherworldly brawn to make any woman swoon. An imaginary male that makes her heart race…

Little does she know she’s being used as bait to lure the real Cypher from his den.

He’s out now.

He’s coming for her, and there’s no place virtual or otherwise for her to hide.

Review (6/13/2022) This gives me a sexier, older version of Warcross by Marie Lu with an additional, Aliens and Cyborgs component. As in this alot about gaming which to be honest I am not a huge fan of so my liking this is somewhat in spite of that. If the synopsis sounds like your speed or you want to move onto Dark Hysteria with full context (like I did), I’d give this a read. Plus at 276 pages this is easy to fly through in a day (or overnight like I did).

Into the couple: Vee was okay. I mean she was kind of a stereotypical Gamer Girl. She’s very generic in that she’s nice, poor and desperate thus most of her actions play into other entities goals without much benefit to her. Also, alot of the premise of the series is built on a lack of women thus Earth is somewhat in chaos. But we’re supposed to believe that at 23, Vee is allowed to be a depressed loner who isn’t married. Even if she’s boring, I think someone would have shown some kind of interest (maybe not that she would want) but I just didn’t buy it.

Cypher is where the stars were earned. I loved being in the headspace of a cyborg bear who was obsessed and falling in love with Vee. Also, Lucas did well to incorporate the physiology / biological habits of bears in Cypher like hibernating and spring fever. I wasn’t a fan of the ending where Cypher was considering . Also, our hero is utterly screwed over by the dumbness of Vee when he has to

Overall, happy to continue on the series but I want to see a more engaging heroine in the next two books!

Indestructible Hero!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🩵🖤❤️💜💚
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍
Character development: ☺️😍🥰😁😋

The heroine: Vee - she had always loved cyborgs and had been obsessed with their heroics since she was young. Though she had never seen one in real life until she went to the EPED (Earthian Planetary Exploration Division) to get corporate sponsorship for her bit to play Terraform Zero, a virtual reality colonization game, in the championships. She felt out of place when she met with Nightheart in his classy office. Vee was one of the few solo players that had made it as far as she had. She never had the friends or the money to align with others and did not have the funds to play in the championship without the sponsorship.

The Hero: Cypher - he is a cyborg shifter. His other form is a Bear. He “hibernates” much of the time, which is to say, he goes out of himself to monitor the networks and security feeds around him make sure nothing gets in that he doesn’t know about. He is the watcher of Ghost City, which is a gigantic city ship and a mecca for cyborgs.

“Part of him was Ghost City. He was the data hound and security expert, but he also relayed information to his brethren seeking entry. It was a needed haven for a people who had no real home, no real place to go after the war. Without war, or a common enemy, Cyborgs had little else to focus on. Many of his kind struggled to find their way.”

The Story: Nightheart offered Vee the sponsorship, and enough money for her to play in the championship in style with money left over afterwards, if she didn’t win. He also promised that a job would be offered to her as well with the EPED or one of its partners. Though there was one caveat, she had to have a made-up partner for her championship bid, a cyborg named Cypher. She was told that it would help represent cyborgs in a good light after one that was employed by the EPED kidnapped a woman and a child not long ago. Vee readily agreed to the terms.

“Even with their current tenuous reputation, they were still fabled war heroes. Fantasies made flesh. Only a thousand or so existed throughout the universe. Not only were they otherworldly with superhero-like abilities, but they were also incredibly rare.
And incredibly strong and incredibly deadly. They lived long lives, were exceptionally hard to kill, and were enhanced with the finest technology humans had ever created.
We made gods.
Literal, breathing gods.
Hecking heroes.”

Though it turned out Cyper wasn’t a fake cyborg that EPED just made up for the sake of publicity, he was real and Nightheart had been trying to recruit him for years, but Cypher refused to leave Ghost. However, when he saw that his classified information, including his picture was all over the network about him being entered in the Terraform Zero championships, Cypher leaves Ghost to find whoever has been impersonating him and releasing his information.

I have been really liking this series, most specifically because every book is basically a standalone and they are all so different. Each of the cyborg shifters shifts into a different mechanical animal, and the settings for each of the books is completely different as is the main conflict. The fact that the Heroes are all nearly indestructible alpha male hotties does not hurt either. I love that they can do so much, from getting inside almost any technology and appropriating it for their own purposes, to changing into a huge metal beast that can kill almost anything, to being able to overcome injuries that would kill most humans. Plus, there are some very steamy intimate scenes as well.

The one thing I didn’t understand and didn’t seem consistent in this series was the fact that in the last book I read Ashes and Metal, Gunner saved Elodie from a bomb and got his back torn to shreds, right down to his metal frame, and though it mentioned the skin growing back right away, it didn’t mention anything about him being scarred. There was also a scene where he cuts off his own thumb, and that grew back, even the metal beneath his skin. So, I don’t understand how Cypher got scars on his body during the war.

I have some...complicated feelings about this one. I think I'm going to have to talk this one out to figure out a rating.

+ This is one of my favorite SFR series, because it manages to have a lot of SF to go with the R. Lucas manages creepy romance better than most of the other authors attempting it, so I always have high expectations from her work. I would argue she's top 3 in this category and writes actual non-human monsters. I love an obsessive cyborg, I love being in their headspace where they're a combination of machine, man, and animal. And Cypher has a really great talking game to boot. Hello, Creepy Bear Daddy. He was enjoyable in this story, and he was very bear-like with his hibernations. His animal was creepy, though not as creepy as some of our previous cyborg mains. Bears are just too cuddly, even the big-ass grizzlies.

+ Vee was... likable for the most part. But. She's my least favorite of the heroines from this series— after so many well-done atypical female characters, we find ourselves with Gamer Girl, who isn't really all that out there. Add to her Poor Girl, and yeah. Just. Hmm. Vee was generically Nice and sort of a snooze. She has flaming red hair, and that's about the most interesting thing about her.

+ Some aspects of the world building I've questioned that I couldn't quite place a finger on before snapped into view more clearly in this installment. In this dystopian Earth, women are less common—Earth Needs Women, though no exact numbers are given: we're definitely not 51% of the population any more—and kept on-planet with severely cut freedoms to prevent the Trentians from snaking them to restore their own population that was culled by humans. Women are supposed to be popping out babies and doing their duty to humanity.... But. Somehow Vee is not only unattached at 23, she's also been 100% ignored by men during prime birthing years? This one doesn't add up for me, and it kept pulling me out of the story. Humanity seems pretty low in numbers compared to the past, so I can buy that women are still working and going to school, but zero interest when women are outnumbered by men is a bit too far for me to suspend disbelief. See also: women being put on missions that are basically doomed from the start for them all to die. Maybe I've misunderstood the world mythos, but this seems to have been pretty clearly stated and consistent throughout the series so far.

Spoilers lie ahead until you see Yzma and Kronk, in case you're in the app and the tag isn't hiding them. You have been warned.

+ The antagonists in this story are the weakest point.

So. This was a mixed bag for me. The last 2 books in this series have not been the strongest, but I think this one was the weaker of the two. So I'll call it a 3. I liked it and didn't have to force myself to read, but there's too much going on that prevented it from being a 4 or higher.

Naomi Lucas made me cry once again.

I've read so many PNR, historical, and modern-day romance shorts/novellas/novels that it's getting hard to grab my emotional heart strings. However, Naomi did manage to manipulate my heart that I used to wear on my sleeve, and I highly appreciate her for this.

I've always been curious about Cypher. In her previous books, he seemed to be fairly gregarious for a cyborg shifter, yet I knew he was hiding a lot behind his man-made visage. I was very curious how Ms. Lucas was going to characterize him and his transformation from the hibernating hermit to the raging/ravaging bear that is his animal. She did an excellent job without having him reflect yet another same-old same-old which I wasn't going to put up with. Naomi has been able to shape her cyborg alphas into singular heroes with a butt-load of problems and short-comings to match their larger-than-life personae. So how did Cypher rate? Fabulous! Fantastic! Fearsome! Frickin' awesome! And I appreciate the cover doesn't have him be the same-old same-old I've been seeing for the past several years — bare torso/abs without a head. You know what I'm talking about. Instead, I'm seeing one great bear of a guy with a short, curvy, young thing practically climbing all over him. I certainly would.

The only thing missing is The Cat.

Vee Miles is a virtual reality gamer. But before you write her off as another alternative reality loser for not being able to deal with the reality originally given to her, this is a far different game. Better than a world-building game. Better than Dungeons & Dragons. An interesting way to preplan future human colonization, especially with the Trentian Empire and Earth barely glaring at each other civilly after a hundred-year war where Earth practically wiped out every Trentian female. She's been itching to play in the annual Terraform Zero virtual reality colonization game which would earn her fame and fortune should she be smart enough and mentally agile enough. Unfortunately, she left home after she refused to go to college, and instead of seeking a career or get married (not many options left for human women on a post-war Earth), she hasn't been able to join a Terraform Zero gaming team, so she's been a loner. And she still needed a sponsor to cover the expenses she no longer could. Enter Nightheart and EPED who choses to become her sponsor... if she agrees to team up with a cyborg.

Nightheart says he needs to improve PR for cyborgs since the Zeph fiasco. (See Chaos Croc.) Right now, sympathy for the once über-heroic cyborg is at an all-time low. Now the problem is to coax Cypher out of Ghost City, a wandering, secretive spaceport without a system, where the ursine has been on/off hibernating on the outside while monitoring the goings-on of the safe haven for all approved cyborgs. So he has Vee "out" the ursine, but to the angry bear's ire.

I found this story line to be quite riveting on more than one level. There were so many times Ms. Lucas could have resorted to one of many easy "outs" when it came to plots and subplots. The last thing I wanted this story to be was predictable! Fortunately, she avoided more than a few pitfalls. She could have spent a ton of time dealing with the Terraform Zero gaming system as it would had been a fascinating "story-within-a-story", but really, would this had been necessary? From an editor's point of view, not really. But trying to pull that off would had been difficult to make believable without being predictable. THAT would had been an entire novel of its own, but would it had advanced the actual relationship?

Some people might have issues with the sex or its overall lack of details, to which I must disagree. There is a healthy balance of sex and intimacy whereas there is plenty of angst (but not necessarily too frustrating or self-serving angst). It's definitely difficult, being the seventh book, to be sexually original without being boringly repetitive. In my eyes, that's like being Eva Gabor's seventh husband. You know what to do but how do you make it interesting? I don't want to see gratuitous sex where I need to fast-forward over the sexy times part until I get to something more interesting. That's a waste of space as well as my time. Intrigue me otherwise. Some people might misinterpret Cipher's aggression to that of nonconsensual sex, but don't jump to conclusions so readily. Just read through and see how things truly end up. I didn't come across any triggers unless there's an issue of losing one's virginity especially traumatic. (Makes you wonder about the evolutionary imperative of a hymen.)

World-building about world-building is there, but it does more to answer questions from previous books rather than establish huge, new vistas. I think it does set up the continuing series for future conflict with the Trentians because I think we're due for some major face-offs with them. With all these cyborg shifters pairing off with human females, will Earth be ready for renewed aggressions with their archenemies? I don't think so unless there are more cyborg shifters in the making.

I'll be waiting for the next in the series because I am anxious to see how things go, not only with Cipher and Vee, but with newly parentals Dommik and Katalina, Reid and Clara, and Netto and Rylie. (Am I missing couples?)

Was nervous when I saw so many reviews say "slow, boring, nothing happened"....

But it's honestly been such a hot minute since I read this series that it didn't bother me that much. It felt kinda nice to have a re-introduction (though I totally see what people have a gripe with).

It was entertaining (cause, bear shifter) but wish there could have been a bit more anticipation with the game.

Overall, it got me back into the series even though I feel like I barely remember much of the books from before. Just reminded me that I am still a sucker for these cyborg fellas.

Vee and Cypher ❤️🔥

This is another really good book! I always enjoy Naomi Lucas’ books. Vee Miles is a human living on Earth and is into virtual gaming. She goes enters a championship game and uses Cyphers name as her partner.
When he finds out, he goes to confront her, but in between their attraction there’s action, secrets and hot romance ❤️🔥

Beary good

I don't like Nightheart, I think he manipulated everyone too much. He obviously has his goals, but he goes about it wrong.

I like watching Cypher and his entire journey in this book. There are a lot of changes for him going on. I agree with Vee though. I think he's a good man.

I liked Cypher a lot. He had the growly grumpy just woke up from hibernation thing down pat. Vee, of course, was his sunshine counterpart. There were a few places in the book where I got nervous, but it all worked out.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: dubcon-ish, violence, attempted kidnapping (not by MC)

3 - 3.5 stars

This book was much better than the last installment of the series, Chaos Croc. It wasn't nearly as confusing and I enjoyed the characters much more.

That being said, I don't think I can rate it more than 3.5 stars. I realize my bar was set pretty low due to the previous book but I just had a hard time loving what was going on. While the plot was very original and interesting, and I did enjoy our two leading characters, I despised the antagonists in it. It was very obvious who was behind it, they were absolutely horrible, and yet there were no repercussions for what they did. Nothing happened to them at all.

description

And let me tell you, they certainly did! It drove me absolutely bananas! Kidnapping? No big deal. Assault? Also no big whoop. Sabotaging a universal competition to jeopardize and torment the cyborg and human team? You bet your ass we're going to do that!

It killed me. Ab-so-lutely killed me. And their justification for all of this?

I had high hopes for this book. I really did. Before Chaos Croc I had loved the series but it seems like it is just kind of starting to go downhill a bit. I guess we'll see how the next ones go.

A growly, mostly feral ursine cyborg shifter and a sweetly innocent gamer. They don't sound like they'd be a perfect match on paper, but Nightheart knew what he was doing when he started pulling strings.

Fair warning, Cypher is NOT happy about Nightheart's string pulling. Well, not at first. Maybe not even at second. But eventually he comes to terms with it and how drawn he is to Vee.

Cyborg shifters sure are a growly, violent lot, aren't they? (And that's only part of why I like them so much.)

As for Vee, she has the thing she wants most dangled in front of her and she snaps it up without realizing the situation she's being maneuvered into. On the cyborg end, Nightheart's using her as bait to draw Cypher out. But there are also other people and organizations in the background willing to exploit her to get something they want. Which Cypher is not willing to let happen.

Yeah, cyborg shifters get a wee bit possessive and protective when someone they have a thing for is threatened. And Cypher definitely has a thing for Vee.

Feral cyborgs, crazy situations, and some seriously steamy encounters. All the things I pick up these books for.

This was one of those books I kept putting down, then picking up, then putting down. So I left it for a while and started all over again!

I loved the storyline. Girl gamer enters big competition using an imaginary game partner, only to discover said partner is actually a very real, pissed off cyborg bear who goes on a rampage to hunt her down. What’s not to love?

My only complaint was that a cyborg bear wasn’t quite as monstrous and complex as previous heroes. He felt a little… tame compared to previous heroes.

And I felt a little disappointed that the feminists turned out to be the raging crazies. Sigh. You know, it just sucked a bit. And what was with the random Trentian dude? It was a half started storyline that seemed to fade away.

But on the whole, second time round, I really enjoyed this.

Good romance story for Cypher and Vee

I am reading this series in order. I have to say that this book was more focused on the romantic relationship between Vee Miles and the Cyborg named Cypher. Of course Sci-fi is the base of all the books, but this one actually did relationship building as the main draw. Cypher is a Cyborg Bear shifter. He has been holding away from all interaction except for his duties on Ghost. However, an old friend of his, really a friend and foe, purposely brings Cypher out of hibernation mode using a human female. There is both irony and humor to the plot of this story. Cypher knows he is a alpha male jerk, and he owns it in every way of conquering Vee miles. Read On!

Maybe I just really like bears I don't know but loved Cypher and Vee's story. A lone cyborg shifters tricked out of his self imposed exile to confront who he thinks stoke his identity o KY to find out it was a night heart's plan all along. Vee an expert Terraforming gamer all she wants is to help the world and her species survive. When Night heart gives her the funds and sponsorship she's needs to join the championship games she takes the only things she needs to have is a partner. She's works solo but agrees when she thinks the cyborg she's supposed to play with is fake. When all hell breaks loose and she realizes Cypher is real and coming for her she's doesn't know what to do. Then she meets him, instant attraction, but doesn't for a second believe shes in his league . Cypher takes one look at her and his bear claims her as his. Cypher and Vee navigate the dangers of professional high stakes gaming along with many who have very sinister motives! They need to work together get past the danger and learn to trust one another. Cool concepts of Cyborg Shifters. This one is of a bear shifter and a kind of geeky video gamer. Sweet, sexy and a good set of plots move these books along quickly. They are a fun ride into space and beyond. I won’t say more except the world building continues through each book and by the time you meet Cypher you have a pretty good picture of just what this world looks and feels like. Mind you, this is supposed to be Earth of course far into the future. It has an ecology mindset about what we are currently doing to our planet but it isn’t in your face or present in every comment about Earth. It is sad what they did to their Earth but we are on par with them now so I can’t say this dystopia isn’t got merit.

Overall these books are all great reads with solid plots and good character and world building.

Cypher’s intense personality is one I tend to like a lot, especially when it’s accompanied by a protective and considerate side… which he has in spades. I adore how rough he is in contrast to how gentle he can be, in both his sexual nature and his general personality. It’s a perfect match for Vee’s bright and “spitfire” personality, her naivety a lovely complement.

The spice was perfect, intense but considerate, and the fact that Vee is a virgin makes it even sweeter. He’s a bit rough with her, but he never fails to pleasure her intensely.

The drama of the game was interesting, but the cyborg specific drama was used more and seemed to be the real issue of the book. I appreciate going through that after all of the happenings of this series. Cypher’s personal growth is really great and a little unexpected for such a set in his ways cyborg.

Vee is a renowned gamer girl on a popular simulation that allows people to terraform planets. She’s poor though, so she needs and accepts a sponsorship from another company. This company tells her that she is to introduce herself to the public as part of a team — the other member being a mysterious Cypher. Mistakenly thinking Cypher is a fake person, Vee goes all out, only to find that he is very real and very pissed off.

This had better world-building than anything. Honestly the end dragged on a bit for me. Characters are okay, with Cypher being more of a grump than Vee. Romance was sort of there.

Wouldn’t keep on my shelf. May reread but honestly I don’t think it’s memorable enough to warrant that.

Good

When Vee is asked to fake a cyborg partner for a championship game event, she doesn’t realize that the cyborg she is impersonating, Cypher, is actually real.
With Cypher as her tournament partner, Vee will have to work hard to try and place in the event… and also deal with the real life troubles that result!

An enjoyable trip back into the cyborg shifter world, this time with a bear shifter.
We see some old friends, and a few other names are dropped from previous series- which means that although this is a standalone story, it works best when you’ve read the other books!

An entertaining dark sci-fi romance for sci-fi romance lovers!

I loved this book!

Ok, first off, that cat was named Bees. That alone earned a star. I love it and now I want my own cat named Bees.

I also loved both of the mc's this time around. Vee, being a gamer, was easy for me to relate to and she just seemed awesome. And Cypher was a big and awesome, moody guy. Just wish there were some more romance scenes between the two but that of course is just my own personal preference. On a side note I really with Terraform Zero was a real game; it sounds fun and I love simulators. The whole book was just perfect for my liking and I will gladly be rereading this one again in the future, I'm sure.

My least favorite in the series.

I struggled getting through this one and I love this series. I wasnt a huge fan of our mfc but especially not the mmc. They both seemed so awkward together! And it's 2020, everyone should know by now that there is no "breaking the hymen". It's shaped like a scrunchie and softens and stretches with the rest of the vaginal wall when the female is aroused. But also, their first time having sex left me feeling confused, I don't think our girl was really into it. She agreed to it though. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next book still.

Sexy and unique

One of my favorite things about this author is how unique her stories & characters are, and how they completely suck me in. Each of these stories is so memorable, I find myself thinking about the long after I’ve finished. Cypher and Vee have such a rough beginning, tumultuous and confrontational, but it evolves into so much more as time goes on. I loved every minute of it.

Love cyborgs!

As usual Naomi has written very deep compelling and very interesting characters. This story takes you on an adventure in not only gaming but in love And discovery. The 2 main characters each Find out what it means To listen to, rely on and work together as a team, But the most important thing they learn is that winning each others love and respect is more important than winning any kind of a game and I'm building a life That they each deserve.

I like this book

I liked this book a whole lot better than the other, Cypher the shifter bear meets Vee gamer! There was some mystery in this book, not dark as the prior book. More was spent on developing their relationship and all the newest of relationship pit fall. But throw in CEO of the EPED changing the rules. Great book
