Nazis in South America. A Nuclear Bomb. Only Department 89 Can Stop It.
When German Major Sophie Decker and her military intelligence unit assassinate a Columbian drug dealer named Hector Gonzalez, little do they realise they are about to uncover a larger, more sinister plot. One that involves Nazis in South America hell-bent on establishing a new world order using a nuclear bomb to hit a high profile target in Europe.
Is this the end of Major Sophie Decker and Department 89? Or will the bomb be defused in time?
It has been a while since I last read a Sophie Decker story, so I re-read all the other Dept. 89 works in my collection before beginning Valkyrie in order to reacquaint myself with the characters and the author's style. This latest effort certainly lives up to its predecessors, wasting no words in its unrelenting pace and compact action scenes. The author deftly weaves the plot elements and multiple players into a tale of conspiracy, international intrigue, and Nazi descendants with a nuclear weapon, that's hard to put down until the final scene's satisfying conclusion. I was also pleased to note that, despite being a pre-publication ARC, there were almost no editing escapes, which can't be said of many other works I've read recently.

In general, whenever you see Major Sophie Decker strolling past, danger and violence follow. This time, though, it might be way over her head.
This Department 89 novel is awesome. Tense and exciting, with great new secondary characters. O'Neill's writing is exceptional, and you really want to know how the novel ends BEFORE you start doing all the things you planned on doing. You simply need to know.
And 'Valkyrie' shows you, quite clearly, what happens when you REALLY upset Major Decker.
You can read this book very well without reading the earlier DP89 novels, but I do recommend reading them all.
Major Decker and Department 89 are back with another action-packed adventure. Once again, the German Chancellor calls upon the Department to resolve problems at home and overseas. Even though the story-line is not realistic, it definitely kept my attention and gave me a great escape from reality. I know that there would be issues with civil rights if a Department 89 truly existed, I have to confess that there are times when I wish this was non-fiction and we had a group that could take care of problems with terrorists, drug lords, and the like. Keep the stories coming!

These books are simply fantastic. Right from page one, the author kicks off roaring action, snappy tongue-in-cheek dialogue, and a protagonist that you love to hate.
Until the very last page, the action never stops for a second, there are no dull moments, and you are always left wanting more Sophie Decker and jump to the next book in the series. And this addition is no exception. Delivers an unflinching, tongue-in-cheek thriller that has you turn the pages extremely fast!
The “Department 89” books are highly recommended if you like escapist thriller fiction and a badass female main character who takes no prisoners.
I have read quite a few books in this series and always enjoy them, this one is no exception. Sophie Decker is just as much fun as ever, her colleagues are both endearing and amusing with a dark sense of humour to them. The whole returning Nazis theme seemed a bit of a dangerous cliché to me before reading the book. It is nicely pulled off and avoids being too stereotypical. I loved the change in locations, between Germany, Columbia and Holland there is a ton of action. Fast paced, well crafted this is a great read.
Major Sophie Decker returns as head of Department 89 in a wonderfully crafted action-packed story with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat right to the last page. This fast-paced read that grabs you on the first page and is powered by non-stop action and a taut, emotional narrative This book is a real page turner! I look forward to reading more Department 89 stories.
Thank you to the author and Book Sprout who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I've loved all of the Department 89 books & this was no exception. Chock full of suspense & intrigue with action galore. Throw in some international twists & turns & you have a novel that will grab your attention & keep it. Could the Third Reich rise again? Did Hitler leave a child behind when he committed suicide? Could such an off-spring be the leader of an underground group whose purpose was to make a Nationalist Germany a world leader again? Oh yeah ... did I mention nukes play a roll in this story too? Good, fast read. Highly recommend this book.
Mjm 5.0 out of 5 stars Kept me engrossed! Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2020 I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout – this review is my honest opinion.
I’ve read and enjoyed several of Mr. O’Neill’s books – this one did not disappoint. This book is well-written, with clear descriptions, strong characters and lots of action. The story pulled me in at once and kept me engrossed, eager to find out what comes next. I could not put it down until I had finished it in one sitting. I will definitely be reading more books by this great author!
Another fast paced work from Mark ONeill. I have not read all the Department 89 books, but each one that I have read has the same level of intensity. Join Sophie Decker and her team as they race the clock to stop a bomb from being detonated courtesy of the Fourth Reich. This is a multi country dash with plenty of action.

I have never read a book that hooked me in the first paragraph. The action in this book starts out quickly and doesn't stop until the last paragraph. I could not put it down till I had finished it. The author knows how to keep your attention all the way through. You should read this book and you will want to read all of his books.

Very intriguing concept. Definitely keeps you interested. The description of the characters was so astute I actually felt like they were real. Each one of them had a role that seemed to accurately fit their personality. It takes a very skilled author to achieve perceptions to the audience like that. Written well.

With, Valkyrie, Mark O’Neill has delivered a title worthy of receiving the “thriller” genre distinction. It delivers on its promise of a roller-coaster of events sufficient to satisfy nail biters from all walks of life.
Can’t wait for these characters to make another appearance in future volumes. Keep ‘em coming!

Major Decker and her Department 89 crew to go South America to take out a drug Lord responsible for a large amount of drugs to Germany. Little did they know he was in bed with a Neo Nazi group descended directly from Hitler and his ilk. As a result of information on a computer recovered from the drug Lord they become aware of a plot to create the fourth Reich. it becomes a non-stop are to stop a nuclear weapon from being set off in Berlin.
My first book in this series and bang, what an introduction for me. I find this to be a great plot and the action comes thick and fast, the descriptions of places and people have your imagination placing you with them and egging them on. Definitely going to read this series from Book 1and I feel you would want to too. I received this book for free via Booksprout and wanted to leave an honest review.
From the moment I started reading Valkyrie through the last page, the action was non-stop! The pages kept turning until I got to the end because I knew there was more action and suspense coming, and I just HAD to find out how it would end.

Excellent read with more than enough plot twists and turns. Brilliant use of fact and fiction with an extremely complex storyline. I wished the story was longer as although I had to read the book during a family medical emergency it seemed as though I started the book than I was closing it down. Highly recommend the series to everyone
A well written exciting book. I read it in one day, didn't do much else but read lol. I thoroughly enjoyed it, look forward to reading more Department 89 stories.

An action-packed, fast-paced, exciting thriller. A story with heroics, betrayals, and misguided dealings. A book that held my interest from page one to the very end. I recommend this Department 89 addition.

As usual an interesting story. Typical Dept 89 adventure but this time Maj Decker and her crew may be out of their depth as remnants of the 3rd Reich plan to disunit Germany.
Just finished this latest chapter in the Department 89 series, and although its 2:00 am, I can't wait to share my thoughts on Valkyrie. As in all of the Department 89 books to date, the intelligence community is shown at its finest and its worst. Gritty and raw. O'Neill knows how to produce a great storyline. His characters are neatly crafted, intense and the reader is drawn in completely. His leading character, Major Sophie Decker is a one tough "dude". O'Neill shows his talents in describing the mindsets of the different cast of characters - Nazis, modern Germans, British, Dutch. If you like a little fantasy along with the intelligence world, Valkyrie should be just up your alley.
