Rate this book

NOPE. This is like sticking uncooked pasta in my eyeballs.

I can't recall the last time I met such a twee, weepy, utterly clueless heroine -- hell, if I've EVER met one. If you looked up "gleeful, skipping idiot" in Wikipedia, this moron's picture would be there.

She cries every other page. No exaggeration.
She's dumb as a stump. No exaggeration.
She's about 3 seconds from romping through the fields, exclaiming over beautiful butterflies & searching for rainbows under rocks. SHE'S JUST THAT STUPID, Y'ALL. I kid you not, this girl has the worldly awareness of a third grader.

Add to that a shitty hero, a shitty plot, & shitty prose...yup. A shitburger doth be served, complete with side of fries & pickle spear.

DNF, pg 70-something. Thank you & goodnight.

What a disappointment! It started out good and then got so incredibly crummy I couldn't finish it. It had good points, like the historical background (the end of the reign of King Charles II and the start of all the troubles that come with king James, the manners and morals - or lack of them - among the English aristocrats, life in Colonial Jamaica, etc.) and the class system that keeps Captain Brett (a.k.a. Lord Lindsey) from marrying outside his social circle, despite his love for "commoner" Cerissa. It also was entertaining to read about their troubled relationship, living together in both London and Jamaica, having a son, his going from cheating to fidelity, Cerissa's love and devotion (even when he made that difficult) their long separation when Brett was thought to be lost at sea, and Cerissa getting married for their son's sake. Then they're reunited...

Then it's as if the author set out to ruin her own story, turn it into a 17thc soap opera (and a bad one, at that). Cerissa, who set such store on fidelity, suddenly has no qualms about sneaking around behind her husband, Gerard's back and then going from Brett's bed back to his, without a problem. (True, hubby turned out to be a creep, but at the time she didn't know that.) Brett, meanwhile, between bed romps with Cerissa is amusing himself in the sack with Alicia, one of his many conquests. So much for the special relationship they had in Jamaica, they've now become one of the sophisticated London players.

Things only get worse, as Brett leaves the scene (yet again), Cerissa's confronted with her husband's true nature, he tries to kill her but she turns the tables, and when Brett's friend James (whom she got to rely on in troubled times, like an older brother) isn't around to pick up the pieces, she ends up this close to prostitution, which revolts her. She had no problem, however, about opening her legs for a highwayman, and enjoying her orgasms, thinking to herself that, as long as her heart belonged to Brett, it didn't matter what her body did. Spoken like a true doxy, to use a quaint term. She sure came a long way from her days in Jamaica!

To make matters worse, when she finds Brett again (naturally, she drops Sean, the highwayman) and discovers he's in financial straits, she thoughtfully marries a rich old man, hoping he'll croak soon so she'll be a wealthy widow. How thoughtful, a.k.a. despicable!

Not that Brett's any better, as he marries Elizabeth, a girl just out of a convent (that "suitable" match he always talked about), and enjoys tormenting her in bed, about her guilt over having sex, as she had wanted to become a nun! Meanwhile, he continues to amuse himself with Alicia.

And we're supposed to root for a HEA for these two crummy people? I think NOT! They're not the same people they were in Jamaica, just like this wasn't the same book it started out to be. I didn't bother to finish it, having wasted enough of my time. I suggest you skip this one, plenty of better (much better) bookfish in the sea.

Ah, my first romance book. I read this when I was 16. From what I can remember it wasn't too bad. I may have to re-read.

I did not find this a great read to leave an impression on me, rather it was just a silly romance novel. However, my interest in this book is purely 2 things. The first, is the era it was writing for, I love the aristocratic England of old - the courts and the ladies and ball gowns etc and second Cerissa's love interest - Bret Lindsey. WOW! I nearly fell of my chair when I read the physical description of his hunk. He is what I have imaged my ideal man would look like.
I felt one with the author then, as if she had quized me on what the sexy Lord Lindsey should look like. Spookey in a way, I felt as if she was in my head.
