Hellbent Halo #3

Devil’s Due

Rate this book
They say Heaven protects children and drunks. For the rest of us, there's Josiah Quinn.

Parting with God's Hand might mean the foul-mouthed half-angel has to lie low, but he's still got to pay the rent.

Will he be able to do that if he hunts bounties no one else will accept?

Yes, as long as he can stay alive.

When a vampire hunt goes terribly wrong, Stefan is left clinging to life by a thread.

Will Josiah betray the only friend he has left in the world to save the man he loves?

Or will he sacrifice Stefan for the army he needs to defeat his father once and for all?

Devil's Due is the third book in the Hellbent Halo series, which features an irreverent bisexual wizard, evil angels, and double-crossing demons. If you like back-alley magic and noir-style anti-heroes, you'll love this bloody good mystery.

I enjoyed this story, unsurprisingly for me, as I love this world & its characters. It was suspenseful and a bit of an emotional roller coaster. Characters made really bad decisions at times, which had me cringing & in periodic moments of dread, but thankfully things moved quickly, so those moments didn't take over too much. I also did not find it at all predictable - even if I could foresee complications arising, I was usually wrong about the exact consequences and resolutions. I found myself falling more and more for both Josiah and Stefan in this book. Khaleda's storyline is interesting and crucial, but I was much more invested in the chapters from Josiah & Stefan's point of view. That being said, the growth of Josiah and Khaleda's understanding of one another from the first book to this book has been a pleasure to read.
I started the book off in audio. I found having 3 narrators, each narrating each character differently to be too much, so I had to switch to print. That being said, I find Matt Cowlrick's way of voicing Josiah to be absolutely perfect, (though his female voices are too masculine sounding), and Greg Tremblay did all the voices well. I just find Erin Deward's voice to not quite hit the mark for me for most characters though, and that is what most led me to switch to print. If either Cowlrick or Tremblay were to do the books in full, they'd be fantastic in audio, and I could probably have also handled a dual narration by them, (though duet would be better).

Devil's Due (Hellbent Halo #3) - a review by Rosemary Kenny

A wonderful, amazing, terrifying and all-absorbing third book in the Hellbent Halo series by the fantastic E.A.Copen, Devil's Due concentrates on Josiah Quinn - half angel, flawed anti-hero and now flying(!) solo, following his departure from God's Hand, this spectacular saga continues as with Stefan and his other ally Khaleda (from the Lazarus Codex series), a succubus, who's 'Hellbent' on becoming Queen of that realm) in attendance, Lazarus starts a 'freelance' vampire hunt which goes terribly wrong and leaves one of the trio's life hanging in the balance.
With betrayal, love, loss,self-discovery, danger, treachery and stolen happiness that's all too temporary, you'd be mad to miss Devil's Due,by E.A. Copen - so don't!

Josiah is sort of happy, living with Stepan, collection bounties when one of Stepan’s ex boyfriends show up needing help with a vampire.
Against his better judgement, they agree to help but of course things go wrong. Stepan is bitten and even though the vampire is dead, there is something wrong. The ex, Logan, was lying and really just wanted to kill the vampire. Things are complicated.
Khalida is trying to get allies for her fight to become the Queen of Hell and she needs Josiah to come to a meeting with a possible ally. The meeting is with another vampire and to Josiah’s surprise it seems to be the same woman.
Things get really interesting from there.
There is a lot of action, fairly bloody again, several surprises and more of Josiah’s background is revealed. The “lovely” spider Milly has a larger part in this book, I must admit she is helpful but I still don’t like her.
This series started out slow for me but each book gets better. I’m really enjoying it now.
There isn’t really a dull moment in the book and I never really have any idea what is going to happen. Good times.

Great continuation of the series. It is irreverent and has a hero who is about as non hero as you can think of and that just adds to its charm.

The more I read of this author's work, the more impressed I am. The blurb is accurate and I love the story and characters but the writing takes it to a higher level. Love it!

Oh brother, the twists and turns still keep coming and battering me like angel wings. Again some I could see coming but more often than not I didn't which is why I love this series, it's definitely keeping me on my toes.

Which brings me to Josiah. I still adore my foul mouthed rule breaking wizard, but after reading this book I possibly love him even more for showing one thing I'd never thought he would, vulnerability.
Yes I know he's a kick ass dude with more rough edges than a razor, but it was his very vulnerability
that at times throughout the story literally made my heart ache for him and want to give him a hug. Of course that's not to say I'd ever want to cross him..

And then there's Khaleda, my little succubus goddess who with all her snark, wit and fighting skill, people still underestimate her. I don't doubt for a second that Khaleda will take down her enemies if they betray her, but the fact that she doesn't want to be a ruler like her father makes her character more interesting and only time will tell if she keeps to that balance.

I was also surprised but pleased that Stefan was the third POV in the story, it's made me a little more hopeful that he and Josiah could be end goals and I think his sensitive and kind nature helps to keep Josiah more grounded, I look forward to seeing more of him and their relationship in the next book.

I know there are only two more books left in this series and I'm sure it won't end how I imagine but so far I've enjoyed the ride to getting there and look forward to book 4.

Devil's Due is Book 3 in the Hellbent Halo series. As with all her books, Ms. Copen has an amazing imagination and her world building is phenomenal. I love her characters as they are not perfect and have room to develop and grow. Josiah is a very interesting character who is not what you would consider a good guy but can't help rooting for. Kahleda and Stefan are also great characters and the three are good together. Ms. Copen has created an adventure that is fast paced, action packed with twists that keeps you turning pages to the end and leaves you wanting more. Am looking forward to the next book to see what Ms. Copen has in store for Josiah and group. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.
