A dangerous storm, a wounded stranger, and a ghost from the past. Just another Thursday in Whispering Pines.

A monster of a blizzard is on the way, but the hardy folks of Whispering Pines aren’t bothered by the weather. Not when there are supplies to gather and neighbors to catch up with.

As everyone finally settles in to ride out the storm, Sheriff Jayne O’Shea gets a phone call. A stranger has stumbled into the village. She’s covered in bruises and mumbling about a car crash. Determined to figure out what happened to her, and to rescue any other potential victims still out there, Jayne braves the howling winds and arctic temperatures. Then another call comes in. An elderly villager is missing in the storm.

Jayne can handle this. She can handle pretty much anything. But when a ghost from her past shows up at the bed-and-breakfast and tries to uncover Jayne’s long-buried secrets, she may have reached her breaking point.

Mystery and fantasy author Shawn McGuire loves creating characters and places her fans want to return to again and again. She started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that's episode IV) as a kid. She couldn't wait for the next installment to come out so wrote her own. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to tell a tale is as strong now as it was then. She lives in Wisconsin near the beautiful Mississippi River and when not writing or reading, she might be baking, crafting, going for a long walk, or nibbling really dark chocolate. Whispering Pines and the characters that populate it, are such a wholly realized world that it is difficult to remember that it is fiction. Shawn has an extraordinary way of writing everything to life. Not just people and animals but also trees, weather and water. Add in a complex town history and a lovely mix of quirky, mystical and challenging characters and I have to return with each new book.

This cozy mystery, ninth in the series, mostly takes place during a seriously ferocious blizzard leaving Jayne, her friends and family to deal with death and accidents on their own. The character and relationship growth continues with a slight focus on controlling relationships and the emotions involved. The light and dark mysteries of Whispering Pines continue but in minor role as Jayne sees her past with new sight and re-establishes her confidence while solving new mysteries.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries that are complex, intelligent and have strong characters that grow and develop, you should read this one. The mysteries develop with clues and red herrings to good resolutions. Each book is better than the last and I gave the first book five stars.

And now I can say I am finished with the SERIES. This one was pretty good—over the course of the nine books, Sheriff Jayne was able to work out all her past demons while dealing with present crimes, and the series had a nice, satisfying arc in that respect.

Shawn McGuire, Justified Secrets #9 - Gee, the tourists are gone but things still go bad and that's not counting the January blizzard. Another well written, well thought out addition to this series that keeps the reader immersed in the pages. The past slaps Jayne cross-eyed but she has the support and the strength of family and friends to help her.

This is my top favorite series, which contains all the elements of good reading: suspense; intrigue; emotions; and a touch of romance and magic set in a fast pace, substantial tapestry of descriptive storytelling by a talented author. I contacted the author to review her books. 4*

Whispering Pines series:
Family Secrets, Whispering Pines #1 - An intriguing story. After finishing Stick and Stones, I dove into Family Secrets, my second book by this new-to-me author. These two books are nothing alike on storylines, except fantasy. I was drawn into this well written novel with its interesting plot and realistic characters, including the lovable dog. I couldn't put FS down until it was finished. There's an overview letting the reader know what the book is about, which I appreciate. This author is definitely someone whose work I want to keep reading. Two books, two winners!

Kept Secrets, WP#2 - Another intriguing story by a very good author. Now we're being to know our main characters as they grow in this book, while remaining believable and realistic. The well written, fast paced plot keeps the reader interested, making it hard to put the book down. The author’s descriptions leave the reader with clear pictures about the town, townspeople and property.

Original Secrets, WP #3 – This is the best of the series. So intriguing that the reader can’t put the book down. A well written, suspense filled book with two deaths forty years apart that may be connected. The characters are steadily growing, even the hated ones are interesting. Their dialog is realistic and none of The Stupid Formula for these characters. Her descriptions are clear and you’re there in Whispering Pines. I’m looking forward to the next book. I contacted the author to review her books; her stories are substantial and the reader is satisfied when finished reading one of her books.

Hidden Secrets, WP #4 - Another hard to put down story. Well written, suspense filled and full of intrigue, still with an interesting group of characters with new ones added to boot. This substantial story has several stories going at once, including the past and the future and the worries that stem from them. I've never been disappointed by any book written by Ms. McGuire and I look forward to more of her work.

Rival Secrets #5 - Rival picks up a month after Hidden Secrets ends. The well thought out storylines keep the reader immersed until the last page. Every book in this series has been great and this one is no different. The regular characters keep showing more of their secrets and growth, and the reader pulls for them. Their dialog is interesting without any stupidity, just realistic and clean. There's touches of sexual tension and hints of mysteries to come. The murder was well handled and while there were plenty of suspects, the path to solving the crime was interesting. As usual, there were kinks along the path, but that's what keeps the reader involved with the story. 5*

Missing & Gone - An interesting novella. This well written story introduces the main and some of the secondary characters of the book Family Secrets. It's a quickly read suspense story, which I read after FS; I didn't miss not having read M&G before FS.

Veiled Secrets #6 - I'm absolutely addicted to this series. Ms. McGuire is on my top ten list of favorite authors. This is another great addition. The story begins a month after Rival Secrets ended. There are a lot of surprises, good and bad, for everyone in WP. Law enforcement will definitely feel the brunt of the happenings. There are two good endings or beginnings at the end of the book. The storylines were very intriguing, suspense filled and mesmerizing making it hard to put the book down until the end. The author's vivid descriptions of the Samhain event was pretty well done. The characters keep evolving with each book and Flavia is going to go nuclear soon by the way she's acting, but that's another story. 5*

Silent Secrets #7 – This has to be my all-time favorite series by one of my favorite authors. While these can be read as standalones, this is one series to invest in from the beginning. Ms. McGuire has an easy to read writing style that belies the intricacies of the continuous and new storylines. Her vivid descriptions place you there with a clearness of location, character and developments. Her imagination, active and nonrepetitive throughout her series, bring a depth to the tapestries she has woven in her storylines. It is wonderful to read about realistic characters that do not follow today’s stupidity formula common in so many books of various genres. They are realistic, people you know and understand. There are plenty of emotions running the gamut, and a good balance between good and bad events, and good and bad characters. 5*

Merciful Secrets #8 - Just when I think I read the best book by this author, she releases the best book ever. It will be difficult to write a review instead of a book report since this book and this series are exceptional. The new and old storylines mesh together bringing a substantial depth to MS. This book starts about two months after Silent Secrets ends. There is a possible new murder and the effects of a 40-year-old tragedy returns for more murders. Some of the new characters introduced are surprising lending suspense to the possible future. There is plenty of intrigue and mystery along with surprises from unsuspected sources. Again, I did not put another McGuire novel down until I finished the last page.5*

*I received a free ARC of this book with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

I’m pretty sure, without looking back, that I have said this before, but Justified Secrets is my favourite Whispering Pines novel yet!

For those new to the series, the books are individual stand-alone mysteries that follow Sheriff Jayne O’Shea as she settles in the small, isolated town her grandmother helped to found and attempts to put to rest the string of murders and dark secrets that promptly begin bubbling to the surface of the, seemingly placid, pagan community.

This is the ninth book in the series, and while I would always recommend reading a series in order anyway, in this case you would miss out on a load of Jayne’s personal history and backstory if you haven’t.

For fans who are up-to-date, there is a great balance here of past and present, personal and professional, prosaic and paranormal. The mystery is paced just right, and is less of a whodunnit than a what-, why- and how-dunnit, but is full of tension and intrigue nonetheless.

There is a smaller cast of characters than usual, as Whispering Pines is snowed in, and so the main characters and a few core side-characters are trapped at Pine Time, creating a classic atmosphere of claustrophobic suspense, which really keeps you on edge as you read.

Anyone looking for a well-written blend of cosy mystery with hints of the paranormal or occult need look no further than this series. It says a lot that I would move to Whispering Pines in a heartbeat, regardless of the death count to resident ratio!

Her smile attempted to mask her pity, but I saw it there behind her eyes. Any of the villagers who knew what had happened gave me the same look. Every single one of them said, “It wasn’t your fault.” Or, “You couldn’t have known.”
Except it was my job to know. I’d been trained to anticipate, spot, and prevent this exact kind of thing. I just never guessed that… I couldn’t even think his name let alone say it. I never guessed he would bring a gun into my home.

A different type of story/mystery

This book was a bit different from the previous ones. It takes place almost exclusively at Pine Time during a blizzard. Jayne’s ex shows up bringing a sense of unease for Jayne.

There’s not a lot to say about the story and I want to avoid spoilers. Suffice to say there’s a blizzard and a strange mix of people end of staying at Pine Time.

There’s not a lot for Jayne to work with in terms of the mysteries but what there is she handles in an almost complex competent way. I spent a good deal of the book really irritated with her. There are so many TSTL moments and complete ignorance demonstrated I did a lot of venting at the book.

Yes, I know it was the personal element that threw her and she even reflects on this but she’s not stupid and she’s been an astute cop until now. It was too much of a character change for me and actually sets the character development back a bit. I am perhaps being too harsh and others may not react the same way. I guess I just like Jayne and after the book starts with the villagers showing their appreciation for her and thanking her to have her act so out of character just did it work for me. I also get that the story had to happen in some way so Jayne could cross another item of her unresolved issues list. But I’d have done it in a way that still had Jayne being competent and recognizing the realities she sees instead of continually questioning herself. Then again I’m not the successful author so I’m probably being more nitpicky than others will be. Apparently I’m team Jayne and don’t want anyone dissing my heroine!

A nasty blizzard is headed towards Whispering Pines. The good folks who live there aren't worried about it. After all this is Wisconsin! Folks go to the super market to get what ever groceries they may need, and do what ever is necessary to be prepared. But Jayne has her hands full when a woman finds her way into the village. She is bruised and mumbling about a car crash. Who is she? Where did she come from? Is she alone or are there others who are hurt? An elderly villager goes missing. What happened there? Jayne's ex-boyfriend shows up. Why is he there? What does he want?
Drama, danger, suspense, intrigue, secrets, romance, twists and turns to keep you turning pages to the end. Very good descriptions, great characters, well constructed plot and very well written. A must read.
All books are stand-alones.. but it is best if you can read them in order.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the author and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.

Justified Secrets is the ninth book in the Whispering Pines Mystery Series by Shawn McGuire. This is a perfect blend of cozy mystery, small-town charm, and just the right sprinkle of supernatural elements.
following Jane O’Shea who has a knack for solving mysteries that seem to find her no matter how much she tries to avoid them. The town itself is a character in its own right – a little quirky, idyllic, and full of secrets. The locals are a fun mix of personalities, from the nosy neighbours to more endearing eccentrics - and their interactions gives the series an extra element of interest along with some ‘warm-fuzzies’.
Ms. McGuire manages to balance lighthearted coziness with genuinely intriguing mysteries. Each book has its own unique twist, and while the stakes aren’t overly high/intense, they’re enough to keep you flipping pages late into the night. Plus, the touch of the paranormal adds an extra layer of fun without overwhelming the story.
Recommend for a binge-worthy read.
Happy Reading…

Funny how bad weather can bring out the good insome people and the bad in others. In this visit to Whispering Pines, a really nasty winter storm is blowing through, closing all roads and bringing problems for sheriff Jayne. A practical joke played on a friend turns (almost) deadly. A young woman is found wandering deliriously in the village, injured and unable to tell anyone what has happened to her. A surprise visit from someone Jayne would rather have stayed in the past. A warm up of 2 villager's dislike for each other. And no deputy! Several people step up in very helpful ways to help untangle this mess. The local snowplow driver, the healer from the clinic, Tripp, and 2 very special guests at Pine Time. There's a hint of what might be the next problem in SO - but not until the weather clears up and visitors return, please! This one really kept me going; I'm exhausted. I need a trip to Maui to recover!

Jayne O’Shea is the Sheriff of Whispering Pines in northern Wisconsin, as well as the co-proprietor of a local Bed and Breakfast that she runs with her personal and professional partner, Tripp.
This book was very enjoyable and filled with twists and turns in the storyline. The B&B is filled with people riding out a winter storm which makes for exciting moments, especially when dealing with Jayne’s past. This is one of those “can’t put it down” books.
The author brings the story together well and, as always, I am eager for the next book in the series. I have read and enjoyed every book Ms. McGuire has written about Whispering Pines. Even though the Whispering Pines stories are a series, each book can be a stand-alone because the author does a wonderful job explaining who the people of Whispering Pines are. I received an ARC from the author.

I really enjoyed book 9, it is a great addition to the series. Many things can happen during a blizzard. This storm has swept in to the Village of Whispering Pines and danger is lurking. The characters in this series are like old friends that you can easily catch up with by reading what is happening in the Village. The characters and interpersonal character relationship development is excellent. Once again Jayne has a couple mysteries on her hands. Can Jayne, with the help of her friends and family, figure out what has happened, correct wrongs and set things right? This book, like the others in the series, can be read as a stand alone book. The books are easy to read and are hard to put down. I am already looking forward to book 10!

This is one of the best series that I have read in a long time. Jayne is sheriff and b&b owner with Jack. The winter has come with a darkness that it brings that can get into people's heads. There is lots of depression during the winter months. So as sheriff winter means there isn't a lot of do. So when she gets a call about a injured stranger that limped into town talking about an accident. She starts to investigate this. That when the blizzard starts to hit. Shops are losing power and medical clinic has lost their power so Jayne takes the victim home with her. Then everything is going crazy. Person missing, Jayne has a very strange visitors that come to the b & b. I couldn't put it down.

I was excited to get into this one as I have fallen for this series in a big way. It has many elements that flow keeping a reader interested from beginning to end. They each get you deeper into this town and more involved with the characters whom some become your friends. Having myself been in a storm or two with lots of snow this one caught my attention right away. Oh she was right on also to be on alert when ex comes to the inn. As each thing unravels in this and secrets are uncovered you will be spell bound. I adore the interaction with all the characters you come to be familiar with. I liked reading more with the sister and father also involved in this story. It will keep you guessing as you try to figure it all out. Now to be patient for the next one.

Justified Secrets is book 9 in Shawn McGuire's Whispering Pines mystery series, it is a cozy mystery with a mystical wiccan flair.
I have read every book in this series, and they are always amazing, this one was no exception!
I was drawn into the story immediately, who is this woman from the accident? What happened ? Will she ever wake up and be able to tell Jayne? I couldn't put the book down, every time I tried, there was a new development.
I am always happy to spend time with these wonderful characters, I always expect the unexpected because you never know what might happen in Whispering Pines.

This book is excellent! Jayne and all the characters are fantastic with their individual quirks and eccentricities. The town of Whispering Pines is a great setting. The story had plenty of twists to keep me guessing and filled in some blanks from stories past. Though it can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading the whole series in order so you miss nothing and get to know this incredible world. Truly one of my favorite places to visit! I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

A big surprise celebration for Jayne's birthday turns into a foreboding omen. Lily Grace sees Jayne's aura turn from extreme happiness to ill fated blackness. It doesn't help when her ex, Jonah, shows up at Pine Time, towing along his new girlfriend. Why are they there, and why is Jonah's story so full of holes? A blizzard hits, a man is missing, a wandering woman is found in the storm, and there could be someone out there, dying from a car crash.

Once again, mysteries and questions are solved and answered. Jayne's personal growth is ever upward, and the residents of Whispering Pines will protect her, as she has vowed to protect them.

Another great novel in this series. Each one seems to be better than the last one. Jayne's dad comes to visit for her birthday. A blizzard is in full storm mode. A female with bruises comes into town from a car crash and is unconscious. Jayne gets an unexpected visit from her former boyfriend, Jonah. What is Jonah doing at the bed and breakfast? His story does not add up. With the blizzard in full force, no one can go very far. Another story line with great characters. A page turning mystery to keep your interest.

I have read every one of the Whispering Pines books and love how the characters have grown. If Whispering Pines was a real place, I would move there in a flash, if they would accept me that is.
Jayne has had to deal with a myriad of issues, both as the sheriff of Whispering Pines, and her own personal demons, but has come out stronger each time.
I loved the pace of Justified Secrets and I would have to say this would be my favourite of the whole series. Happy reading. Annemarie

I found this newest entry of the life of Jayne and Whispering Pines to be the one I've most enjoyed. She feels fully integrated in the community both from her point of view and the view of the people there. I really liked the flow of this one and I'm looking forward to the next one. This one left me wondering a great deal about Jayne's past. Something has helped her mature quite a bit but what was she like before and what path did she take to get where she is. I wonder what we will learn about the people of the village and Jayne on the next pages of the story.

I love this whispering pines series, this book is brilliant fun with such quirky odd characters, and danger, add in a snow storm and trouble arises. Jayne is such a good character I’ve enjoyed seeing grow and develop and learn new things and to fight for herself and what is right. It’s so well written and descriptive it’s easy to imagine the town and all that happens. Thoroughly enjoyable. To be read in order for the best understanding and enjoyment of all books.
I received a free copy to read and review, and I’m glad I could, this is a series no one should miss.

Great reading!

My computer are the original review of this book. Anyway, as I said before I have followed Sheriff Jayne O'Shea from the beginning and I sincerely hope that this is not the last book. She does settle some unfinished business from her past, but Whispering Pines is full of untold stories, like that of sisters Reeva and Flavia. I cannot wait to hear the details of that relationship! The dialogue is snappy and the characters are fascinating, including those in her own family. It is always refreshing spending several hours in her company.

There were certainly some surprises in this one! When Jonah shows up and brings so many twists and turns with him, I am surprised Jayne handled it so well! She is a true officer of the law. Amazing Book!!! She's so lucky she had so many people to support her when she needed it. Her family and friends are strong and ready to help.
The format of this book was a little different too. Shawn gave it some interesting views that she doesn't normally do in this series. It took the book to new heights.
I definitely insist that you read this book!!

Oh my gosh!

What an exciting and suspenseful story! I thoroughly enjoy Shawn McGuires books and this one beats them all! I try to temper my reading in Whispering Pines because I love "being" there! I feel as if I know Jayne and Tripps old house and the lake and Village! Shawn brings it all to life and I read her books so quickly. I took two days to read this book but I had to purposely put it down. I think next book I will curl up with a blanket and just read through!

The beginning of the book really pulls you in, and keeps you reading. I really love all the characters, and with each book we get to know and understand them better. The main character is not perfect, and we are along for the ride as she grows as a person and finds the life she wants plus we get a great mystery too. Looking forward to the next book. If you are looking for a cozy mystery with a touch of witchcraft this a book for you.

Binge reading at its best...

Just loved all 9 books. Crazy, loving, real characters that evolved as the books progressed. A real feel good feeling as you read. Food for thought in every book... literally, wish there were recipes. Makes yoh think about your own life and how you live it...

The plots for each book are unique and the way the characters interact weaves a great through the series. A wonderful read... book 10 please.

This is book 9 of the series. I haven't read the others and I doubt that I will because I don't care to read of the back story of the main characters ex boyfriend. I'm not sure where the "justified " portion of the book title comes from. Yes, there are secrets, but it doesn't make sense to me.

The little village is full of wickens with different gifts. Interesting group of people. Main character is trying to get a B&B up and running again while also serving as the local Sheriff.
