So many Sandman stories start with an interesting concept that then is pulled along into a fairly conventional but still unusual narrative.
The idea of a nightmare named Ruin waking up in the place of the person having the nightmare is such a... oh, what's the word I'm looking for? Neat? Cool? Radical? Bodacious? Bonkers? Amazing? Creative? Ludacris? Wonderful? All of the above, concept?
Well, whatever it is, it's one of those words.
I especially found the ending peak Sandman esque. "Someone let them out."
It's clear to me G Willow Wilson understands the fundamentals of making a great Sandman story while also feeling wholly different from Gaimam in both tone and in writing.
It's so much better or worse than the originals than it is a parallel and complimentary cousin of it.
And the art is great- as expected. In cases like these you can't be dropping the ball. Weird dream shit needs to look cool and hey, it does in this case.
I think what I will remember most from this is a woman chasing a cat up endless stairs to nothing in a twisty warped house in the middle of space. I'm quite simple and I take images with me when I read comics. That image begins the journey and with its striking observations of imagination I am both awed and appreciative for having read this odd little tale.
As with most Sandman tales, I'm not so much compelled to read the next issue, but I do feel a weird and inexplicable summoning to continue the journey.
Like a lot of dreams, it just feels nice to be there when you're there.
