This book is for all those who have dared to risk it all, who have faced their monsters and survived, who have held something truly beautiful in their hands only to set it free. Because what is life after all but something lovely and precious and all the same brief and immeasurable. Thank you for reading.
Ryan Morrow is an analytical chemist and poet living in the American midwest. In his free time from the laboratory he writes poetry about his experiences and observations of the world. His style is a chimera of the idealized writers of old and the wham-bam-thank-you-mam style of today's instagramers. Poems that span the gamut of topic and form, but always searching with a curious yet demanding intent. To date he has released two volumes. "Chase Something Worth the Kill" his literary cherry-pop from 2015 that has proven to be an extremely elusive book to acquire. Short punchy lines of verse that leave the reader just as perplexed and captivated. Then came the hefty and more refined "Deep Survival" of 2018, a more well rounded and focused effort with beautiful illustrations to help navigate the reader to their mysterious destination. Due out on Halloween of 2020, Mr. Morrow is set to release his third and most ambitious work to date, "Weightless: Blood of Flower, Heart of Beast." A book about beauty and its beasts, the ephemeral nature of man, and falling in love with uncertainty. It's safe to say that Ryan is far from exhausted when it come to the written word. Much more territory begs to be explored and brought to the surface.
I felt sort of invincible during and after reading Ryan Morrow's new collection, "Weightless: Blood of Flower, Heart of Beast," and you can too. Existentially warming just as much as it is an existential warning to all stuck pacing the narrow trenches of an unexamined life. This book--and the amazing artwork by Nickalaus McGee garnishing the pages throughout--sings to the individual: slow-down, listen further, love pain, be there and know the paradox is beautiful even if it negates you.
"The Best Days on Earth are the ones you never see coming." From No Regrets in Weightless
4 stars
A collection of sometimes dark sometimes hopeful poems. Like most collections, some spoke to me more than others, though there were some in the middle that became a bit repetitive. I suggest meandering through these slowly letting each poem sink in. The artwork that accompanies the collection really elevates this work.
The words of Ryan Morrow are unlike those of any other. Cascades of rapid-fire metaphor transform effortlessly into touching, cathartic reflections and back again, leaving the reader brimming with an exuberant lust for the grit and vibrancy of this awe-inspiring existence. Read it fast to experience a whirlwind of stream-of-consciousness imagery, or slow it down and piece together the intricate clockwork of powerful ideals. Embracing the ugly, the beautiful, and the downright bizarre, this work masterfully conveys Mr. Morrow's inspiring covetousness for all aspects of life. "Weightless" lends a fresh set of eyes with which to see the world anew.
