The offer seemed simple enough: a fresh start to a disappointing life so long as she pledged to fight. Atalanta is all too eager to sign up for a spot in the military’s newest elite branch, but she quickly finds out that the offer only applies if she can live through the trial.
Thrust into a contest of bio-engineered warriors, Atalanta is given enhanced speed and strength to battle against her fellow military experiments. The competition soon becomes an unexpected exercise in survival on all fronts. Wildfires rage through the hills of Los Angeles, unhinged soldiers lurk in the shadows, and the most dangerous threat of all descends from above. Atalanta will have to decide whether winning means saving herself or the lives of everyone in the city, including those competing to kill her.
Mythology is high on my revolving list of hyperfixations. I've taken my love of Greek myths and mixed those characters with modern stories of people learning to cope with superhuman abilities. Everything I write takes place in the same universe because I like to think my characters would try to get together for game nights.
When I'm not writing or buying things based solely on its sweet, sweet artwork, I can usually be found in an airport terminal because I won't rest until I've bought Magic cards in every major city.
Atalanta is a short fun read. I’ve followed this “super hero” universe through the years and was blown away by the direction for this new series. I recommend Atalanta and the original The Circle War series for any fan of the marvel stories too. Action, humor, drama, and, you know, life and death stakes and what not. It’s all here folks. You’ll love it.
Another fun book in the universe created by King. I enjoyed this one more than Prism, but below the 2nd and 3rd books in his The Circle War trilogy. The characters were good, the action and suspense were non-stop, and descriptions vivd. For me, the story was wavering around 4 stars, with some obvious plot holes really bothering me, but then the final pages cleared up my questions and made this a five star read. More than his other novels and short stories, due to the protagonist's age and thoughts, this did feel somewhat like it could fit the YA genre that is so successful in today's world, but that is not a criticism, just an observation.
Super hero powers, hunger games like, and add in some body snatcers. These were the first things that came to mind when I read this. This is my second book by Matt King. I love his characters. The world building. I don't want to spoil anything. Great twist near the end. Can't wait for the next.
This is a very fun and engaging read! Great visual writing style. The characters are compelling, especially our main character. I'm very interested to see how her story fits with the larger story of the world that Matt King is building!
