'Only a Duke Will Do' by Tamara Gill is book two in the "To Marry a Rogue" series. This is the story of Lady Isolde Worthingham and Merrick Mountshaw, the Duke of Moore. I have read the Previous book "Only an Earl Will Do" but feel strongly this can be a standalone book. This book was a second chance book for love that should have been from the start a happy ending but there was someone who prevent that for these two loves! Isolde and Merrick meet at a dance where they fall in love from the start. Merrick asked Isolde to marry him pretty quickly. But on the eve of their Wedding a jealous friend of Isolde set into motion a plan that destroyed their chance to be married. Instead Merrick was force to marry that evil friend. Now about 5 years later after Isolde up and left the town for Scotland she has decided to return to the town to find herself a husband. Isolde quickly runs into Merrick and they both at first try to act as if the past didn't happen. But Isolde starts to learn that Merrick is living the happy married life with her former friend as she assumed. Merrick learns that Isolde is back in town to marry...which is upsetting to him. Merrick is still married but the town has made a joke of his marriage. In addition, Merrick's best friend has his eye on Isolde for a wife. Can these two ever find the happens that they both deserve? This was another great book by Ms. Gill...and only makes me want more!

Well, this was depressing. Which is probably to be expected in a romance when the hero is married to someone else while still pining after the heroine, and the heroine herself gets engaged to someone else. I don’t know why, but I expected Merrick’s wife, Leonora, to die off pretty quickly and for him to have to work to win Isolde back, but that’s not what happens. Leonora is alive for most of the book, which makes for a pretty miserable read.

That’s not the only issue I had with this book. In fact, there were many, many problems that made the whole read a distracting exercise for me because I simply couldn’t believe most of what was going on.

Firstly, Leonora has all the power. From her first appearance, even after her death, she is completely in control. The daughter of a country vicar. Somehow, she gets the whiphand over two dukes, and that’s within the first chapter. It just doesn’t make sense. Leaving aside what she does to Merrick, her attempt to blackmail Isolde’s father should have been laughable. Considering even in this day women who accuse powerful men of abuse are rarely believed, the idea that she can ruin not just one powerful duke, but two, by spreading a lie was ridiculous. Even if she’d been believed, rape culture is so strong it would likely have been shrugged off. It is a horrible accusation she makes, and I can understand why it repulsed all involved, but the fact Leonora can use it to gain everything she wants is so unlikely.

It also blatantly undercut everything else she was saying, because it’s such an obvious lie to everyone in the room that it shreds her credibility. Who would believe anything else she said after that? None of them. Merrick would have walked away, Isolde’s family would have thrown Leonora out and her life would have been ruined. The idea that Merrick, a duke!, can be forced to marry someone who has clearly manipulated her way to a coronet is ridiculous. The scandal would have blown over for him or he could have gone abroad for a year or two and returned largely unscathed. If he truly loved Isolde so much, I can’t believe he would ever have married the woman who ruined it all.

Not only that, but he lets her live the life she wants. He controls everything about their life. He could have forced her to live in the country, taken his son away and cut off all her money, all within his rights as her husband, but no, he prefers to mope about like a loser while she has as much fun as she likes. This did not endear Merrick to me. He’s far too passive and lets everyone else rule his life for him.

Plus Leonora is completely irredeemable. She is manipulative, spiteful and a rapist. She doesn’t even have a sympathetic back story. She doesn’t have much of anything. She’s plain nasty, so the fact that both Isolde and Merrick feel guilt/forgiveness for her after her death made me like them a little less. They’re so shiny and perfect, but I think they’re allowed a bit of hatred or ill feeling. It’s the least Leonora deserved.

Isolde is boring. She’s a proper lady most of the time, except for when she decides to go walking about the seedy side of London without any kind of back up, for reasons that never make much sense. She also runs over to Merrick’s house in the middle of the night and walks around in front of his servants, but doesn’t think this is particularly scandalous. It’s so brainless.

A bit like the idea that of all the eligible men in London that she could marry, she thinks Merrick’s best friend is her best bet. This never makes sense to me. If she cared so much about coming between them she could, I don’t know, pick someone else! And even if she didn’t come between them, surely the idea that she would spend the rest of her life in close company with Merrick would have been too painful to bear. But apparently not.

Also, why are her family so nice to Leonora? The cut direct was a real weapon and since it’s obvious the duchess is scandalous and awful, why do they acknowledge her, let alone invite her and Merrick to their house? On top of that, why does Merrick ever escort her anywhere? Oh, that’s right, because he’s spineless and prefers to wallow in his misery.

I was willing to have so much sympathy for Merrick and Isolde over what was done to them. Leonora is awful and the things she freely admits before dying prove what a monster she was, but Merrick and Isolde are so boringly passive throughout it all that I couldn’t care about them. They don’t deserve a grand passion, because neither of them do a thing to fight for it. Even the end felt like a complete let down. They’re so disappointing.

Overall, I think it’s safe to say that this book and I did not get along. Guess this one just wasn’t for me.

The book opens to a fairytale: Isolde is about to marry the man she's in love with, a duke no less. I was thinking to myself what could go wrong.

What I found hard to believe is that Merrick, a duke, would be forced to marry Leonora. I could understand why the wedding between Isolde and Merrick would be called off, but not that a duke would be forced to marry a lowly vicar's daughter.

When I found out that 5 years later, Merrick had a son I felt the strong urge to DNF. However, I kept on reading. This book is a little frustrating because you just want the main couple to be together, yet Isolde is being courted by Merrick's bff and Leonora is making Merrick's life miserable. When Leonora dies, the whole problem should be solved but it's not. A more unscrupulous duke would have been like if only I had killed my wife sooner... But seriously, he could have divorced her or something. He was letting himself live the rest of his life in misery. Like another reviewer said, Merrick was just living his life very passively and letting others make decisions for him.

Isolde would have married Merrick's bff if she hadn't found out the bff had an opium addiction and was bisexual. So the author gave him an unsuitable backstory.

Only finally do Isolde & Merrick realize maybe they should get engaged again! As another reviewer said, Isolde (and Merrick for that matter) is pretty boring. I don't know much about her, besides her family and what happened the first time she tried to wed Merrick. The characters don't have conversation where it would show us what they like about each other.

I would have liked in the epilogue Isolde being pregnant with Merrick's child. I feel kind of bad for her with 2 kids not her own. That wouldn't be my ideal HEA.

I enjoyed this book so much.

I started this book with the intention to only read a few chapters before bed. That plan was waylaid from the very first chapter. I truly loved this book. It was so emotional, passionate, with realistic conflict and characters I was quickly and deeply invested in. I cursed, rather filthily at some points, and I cheered. Heck I even cried. No shame in admitting it. Isolde and Merrick were wonderful together. They were both betrayed and had to find their way back to each other. I loved every moment of that journey. I recommend.

This is an emotional roller coaster Regency romance written by a skilled wordsmith who brings the characters, their interactions and feelings vividly to life in this page turner novel. I loved it!

Eighteen year old Lady Isolde Worthingham is in love with the man she's to marry tomorrow Merrick Mountshaw, the Duke of Moore. They met at a country dance and both love each other and can't wait to be married . . . . Until her spiteful, deceitful and manipulative supposedly best friend intervenes to cause a scandal that forces him to marry her friend rather than Isolde.

Heartbroken, Isolde takes refuge in her Scottish estates for more than five years before acknowledging she needs to see her family and returns to London for the season. She didn't expect to see Merrick again but nor did she expect to discover his marriage is the talk of the ton and definitely not a happy one. Isolde and Merrick are still in love with each other but he's still married to his now scandalous wife and has a young son. As she seeks to find a suitable husband, he's torn as he doesn't believe she should be with anyone but him. The angst and turmoil between the two just rolls off the pages, taking the reader into their tumultuous relationship. With both being betrayed by someone they previously trusted, being thrust apart, this is their emotive journey to love and a possible happy ever after that seems so far out of reach for most of the story!

I have no hesitation in highly recommending this dramatic regency romance to anyone who enjoys this genre, it is well written with great characters together with so many twists and turns making it an enthralling read. I can't wait to read the sequel which I believe will feature Isolde's sister, Lady Alice Worthingham.

Many thanks to the publishers for gifting me, without obligation, a copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Regency Melodrama

3.5 stars
The scenes set. It's the night before the big day when finally Lady Isolde Worthingham is going to say 'I do' and marry the man who holds her heart, Merrick Mountshaw, the Duke of Moore. But when Isolde witnesses her fiancé in bed with her so called best friend her heart breaks into a thousand pieces. And her best friend--nothing less than a scheming cat who goes to scandalous lengths to bag a Duke!
The marriage between Merrick and Leonora Hart is doomed to failure from the beginning.
Isolde hives off to Scotland for five years to try to mend her broken heart. After that time she is at last was persuaded to return to London. Because society is society, Isolde finds herself back in the arena of all that is fashionable--including Moore and his Duchess.
Lenora is even worse than when we last saw her, glittering, highly strung, barbed and dangerous. Merrick still calls to Isolde. But enough! Isolde has decided to find a husband and start a family. Love need not be a factor.
The man she chooses however is pursued by his own devils, and it's seems that unknowingly Lenora is heading into a marriage that will be far less far than the contract she envisages and nowhere near the polite union she's hoping for. Isolde's heart will not be involved but she hopes for at least a civil scandal free union, despite the draw that Merrick still is.
A reasonably enjoyable romantic farce with an eye opening prelude and three interesting acts.

It's a very emotional read. The story is amazing and the characters are all well-written. It's a must read for historical fiction fans.

Duke of Moore and Lady Isolde fell in love at first sight. Since the day they met they have known that they're meant to be together. They are going to have their happily-ever-after soon. But then they're both betrayed. Isolde leaves her home and move to Scotland, heart broken and in despair. Moore, shackled in a marriage he didn't want, becomes resigned to his fate. And life went on....

Now after five years Isolde is back. As soon as their path crosses they both realise how much they still love each other. Unfortunately it doesn't matter any more. Moore has his own life, a wife and a child. And Isolde is also ready to move on, find a husband of her own, and finally be happy. But the more they see each other, the more difficult it becomes to deny what they know to be true. Will they ever be happy or are they doomed to live apart and in misery for the rest of their lives?

It's a very interesting story, with many twists and turns, I quite enjoyed reading it. 'To Marry a Rogue' has become one of my favourite historical romance series. It has drama, romance, intrigue, heart break, and lots of emotions which kept me interested through out the book.

This is the first Tamara Gill book I've ever read and what an introduction for me, within the first few chapters I'd gone through so many emotions with the characters I felt emotionally wrung out and had to keep putting the book down to gather myself (emotional mess that I am).

My heart broke for Isolde I literally could feel her pain as the betrayal was revealed & felt she was a great character who stuck to her morals even though it would have been easy to commit adultery with the hero.

Merrick could have grown a back bone, he should have fought for her rather than bow down under pressure from the other characters & I didn't like the fact he blamed himself for what happened to his horrible life. In the end he made it right  which is what these books are all about happy endings.

This book has everything love, betrayal, angst, longing, so many feelings & emotions that it has been a while since I've read a book that still had me thinking about the characters hours later. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series "Only A Viscount Will Do" which is the story of Isolde's younger sister Alice who also appears in this book.

Isolde and Merrick

Such a wonderful second chance romance! Isolde and Merrick finally after so much heartache got their happily ever after. This book also had characters that were very much hateful. But this book was well written and I loved the ballrooms and the dancing. But the love scenes were very few and nondescript.

When Merrick Mountshaw, the Duke of Moore first set eyes on Isolde Worthingham, he was smitten. After they were introduced and became acquainted, he fell in love, and knew almost immediately that he wanted to marry her. Isolde is the daughter of a duke, and only eighteen years old, but she falls hard for Merrick as well. They become engaged, and their love and camaraderie grows stronger every day. It's now the night before the wedding, and Isolde is awakened to find a note under her door, advising her to check Merrick's room if she wants to see the true character of her future husband. As she heads down the hall, now joined by her father, they enter Merrick's room to find him in bed with Letty, Isolde's lifelong "best friend."

In the ensuing chaos, Merrick is horrified to realize what he has done. He came to bed, pleasantly intoxicated, thinking of his bride-to-be, and drifting off to dream of her. The viper, Letty, came in to his room in total darkness, and seduced him, letting him believe it was Isolde, and that he was, in fact, dreaming of her. The sequence of events which happens next doesn't ring true for me. Isolde's father immediately announces that the wedding is off, and after barely listening to the still-bemused Merrick's attempts at explanation, decrees that Merrick will wed Letty tomorrow in Isolde's place. This was to avoid blackmail that Letty casually threw in to the mix. Not only that, but Isolde was forced to attend the ceremony that was supposed to have been hers.

Isolde's grief and desire to avoid society led her to live at a secluded Scottish estate for the next five years. Now, at age twenty-three, she decides it's time to rejoin the living. Above all else, she desires children of her own, so she'll travel to town to try to find a husband. Love not required. Almost as soon as she arrives in town, she encounters Merrick and his young son. After all this time, their love hasn't died, and they feel the pain of their broken romance. Letty succeeded in her quest to become a duchess, and now is leading a debauched life, and making a fool of Merrick. While Isolde feels pain and regret, she is still determined to move ahead, and find a husband. Eventually she becomes engaged to one of Merrick's best friends.

I have such mixed feelings about ONLY A DUKE WILL DO. The premise of a love match being halted on the eve of the wedding greatly enticed me, as I love a second chance romance. Yet, I couldn't quite believe that a powerful duke could be brought down by a scheming villainess, and then browbeaten and humiliated by her after their marriage. The character of Letty was so vile, that I really couldn't stomach reading about her. The part of the book after Isolde returns to London was so painful to read, that it seemed to me to drag on forever. Perhaps my strong reaction is a testament to Tamara Gill's skillful writing, as I was definitely affected by this story. If you enjoy a dark romance, where the protagonists are tortured as they struggle on their way to happily ever after, ONLY A DUKE WILL DO fits the bill.

This is a book you find won’t be easy to put down the author hooks you from the first page until the last. It is a very emotional read that will break your heart, almost leave you in tears and make you smile. It is a story of second chances I just love these kind. From the first meet when their eyes touch they fall helplessly in love, something happens that tears them apart leaving one running to Scotland in hopes of fixing her broken heart and the other married to a women he never wanted standing by his word doesn’t mean he isn’t broken hearted still wanting the only women he ever loved.

Moving ahead five years Isolde comes home hoping to finally find a man she can live with love doesn’t come into it she wants a family. Faith has its own course when Isolde and Merrick meet again, one look they know they are right back where they started so many years ago. The only problem is Merrick is still married now with a family of his own. It seems time will past them by and they will never have that HAE they both have dreamed of for so long. The more they see of each other the stronger the pull is. Will these two go their separate ways or will faith play a hand and make it so they can be together forever?

My heart really went out to Isolde, the author writes in a way you can really feel her pain and lose. She is a lady of morals and strong beliefs which she sticks to. It was so very easy to like her she is just so sweet. Merrick I have to say I felt for him but he could have stood his ground let the chips fall where they may and be with the women he loved. I understand how it was back then but dang it sometimes you have to fight for what you want and say the hell with the rest of it.

The author gives a wonderful plot that really draws you in pulling on your heartstrings. She gives a compelling story of betrayal, pain, lost, love needs, wants, longings, desire and so many other emotion that just about breaks your heart. I found myself yelling at the characters, cheering when things went right and just about crying when things went so wrong. This story has wonderful twists and turns that keeps the reader invested. The writing style is wonderful and keeps you spellbound from the first to the last page. I haven’t read anything by this author but do plan on doing so. It was a delight finding reading this story.

Only a Duke Will Do by Tamara Gill is a deliciously wicked Historical Romance.
Book 2 of the 2 book series, "To Marry a Rogue", but can be read as a stand alone. See, Book 1 "Only an Earl Will Do". Set in Scotland and London.

This is one of those WOW, stories. Well written, fast paced, action packed with realistic situations, challenges and hope of finding a HEA.
This is the story of Lady Isolde Worthingham and Merrick Mountshaw, the Duke of Moore.

With hatred, anger, scandal, heartbreak, separated lovers, secrets, betrayal, hope, healing, misunderstandings, and an unknown foe, readers will be turning pages as they have a few cries, some smiles, a bit of bitterness, and overwhelming desire for Isolde and Merrick to face the challenges presented to them, force the past hurts to heal, overcome the obstacles to find their HEA and a forever love. Merrick is married to a scandalous wife, one he never wanted, and who flaunts her many indiscretions. What a hell he's been through. Then the only women he's ever loved returns to London, all changes. I enjoyed Merrick and Isolde's
story. Can heartbreak and scandal find healing, hope, and a second chance, amongst the chaos of their lives?

Ms. Gill presented readers with an emotionally charged read, that will have you turning pages as they are engrossed in an exciting and enticing read. Powerful, compelling, emotional and an absolute delight to read. Strongly recommended for fans of Historical Romance, fast paced and action packed stories with a strong heroine and a proper Lord who face the ton. Can Merrick and Isolde win if they by they follow the rules of the ton? I can't wait to read Book 3, coming May 22, 2017 "Only a Viscount Will Do".

Merrick's and Isolde's story was fun and unique. This lovely couple met and fell in love- riding high on their romance through the night before the marriage. Then disaster happens. After turning in for bed, Isolde's closest and best friend tricks Merrick (taking advantage of his inebriated and tired state) and steals him from her. It is a tragic twist of trickery and the harshest betrayal from Isolde's best friend, and thwarts both Isolde's and Merrick's hope for a happy life together. Her groom is forced to marry the traitorous friend-despite his best efforts to explain the horrible incident as the betrayal to both of them that it truly was. No one believes him... and Isolde is kept from giving him the first real opportunity to explain. Her heart shredded and broken, she leaves for Scotland and stays away from London, trying to heal.

Five years later, Isolde returns. She decides that she is not willing to live her life as a spinster on the shelf and wants a family of her own. She wants children. But as fate would have it, almost the very day she ventures out in society, she is forced to face the man who still holds her heart, and the woman that betrayed them both. Isolde tries to stay on course, forcing her mind to wage an epic battle with her heart, hoping to find a way to live her life in the only way she sees open to her. She wants to find husband that will be acceptable, realizing love will never be part of her consideration again.

This story gripped me from chapter one, and I read it without stopping. Yes,...there is a happily ever after, but the road to happiness is fraught with disappointment and pain. The story makes you laugh, cry, wring your hands...it's draining! But you cannot put it down until its finished!

Highly recommend. Four stars for this one!

A Betrayal of Epic Proportions....A Love That Knows No Bounds!

On the eve of her wedding Lady Isolde Worthingham had her dreams and heart shattered, betrayed by her fiancé and best friend. Never in her life did she ever think of witnessing the man that was her destiny marry her best friend!
Humiliated and broken she flees to Scotland.

Merrick Mountshaw the Duke of Moore saw the love of his life slip away the moment he was shackled to the harpy that destroyed his life. The only bright light of that unfortunate night is his son. He strives for some happiness, until he comes across Isolde and the love he thought died comes crashing back with a vengeance. He can't let her make a match not when he wants her for himself. Is there hope for Isolde and Merrick? Can Isolde ever forgive Merrick for the hurt he caused?

The reader will get an exquisite surprise in this love story full of anguish and betrayal. The love that they share is so strong that even though they both tried to do the right thing to live separate lives, the pull is uncontrollable. Despite everything Merrick acquires the backbone he was tragically missing in the beginning and redeems himself.
Definitely a roller coaster ride of emotions the end result is truly what the reader has been craving for from the beginning "A Second Chance at Love"

I received a copy of this title from the publisher for an honest review. I would give this title 3 1/4 stars if I was able to give partial stars. I enjoyed this book and the writing style, but I found something that I couldn't quite put my finger on in the romance a little lacking. After a year of courting, Lady Isolde Worthingham and Merrick, the Duke of Moore are to be married the next day when she unexpectedly finds him in bed with her best friend, Lenora. Merrick, unsure of exactly how he ended up in bed with Lenora, soon finds himself unhappily wed to the scheming witch. Isolde exiles herself to one of her family's estates in Scotland for the next five years before deciding to try and make a comfortable marriage without involving her heart. Merrick is still married to Lenora and the two have a son with another child on the way; the marriage is unhappy, and Lenora has not improved with time. Isolde and Merrick have several challenges to overcome to find their way back to each other. I liked both characters, but because they spend much of the book apart, I didn't feel the romance between the two was as strong as I wanted it to be. That said, I did enjoy the book overall and will look for the next title by this author.

One word WOW! I felt like I was in the book. I was not expecting the type of scandal that happened and was already wanting to yell this can't be happening. There are a few twists that can be shocking and times that I was celebrating and times I wanted to cry which is why this is going on my all-time favorite list. I highlighted so many things that I loved in this book from funny things to shocking confessions.

Isolde's heart was shattered the night before her wedding, but she didn't let it break her completely. I felt for her every time she tried to move on and convince herself that the rumors she heard were not true. I loved her from the start and how she followed her heart instead of listening to others.

Merrick can break your heart because he carries a guilt and shame for everything. His wife wasn't just scandalous she seemed evil and loved to torment him and everyone. I think somewhere deep down he did somewhat care for her because he blamed himself. I loved him right away but even more when he saw Lily.

This is defiantly a must read and I hope to see her family more and find out what happened to his friend,

I won an ARC of this book at a FB party, and I was ecstatic. First off, the cover just drew me right in! It promised a seductive read, and it did not disappoint. I loved how much Isolde and Merrick were in love. The author painted a very clear picture of their feelings for each other. When the betrayal occurred, I practically screamed at the characters, because I was already invested in their world. I felt anger, sadness, pity; all the emotions a good writer can make the reader feel.
As the story progressed, I was no less involved, and the introduction of new characters only added to my reading experience. The author uses great detail in her descriptions, yet she doesn't bog you down with too much narrative, and I appreciate that.
This is a first read for me by this author, but it won't be my last. I will be reading more by her, and esp. in regards to this series.

**UPDATE** REVIEW:
Second book in the To Marry a Rogue series and I loved it as much as the first! Merrick and Isolde (loveee the names) are young lovers whose dream life takes an unexpected turn! The book is full of the Ton, balls, scandal, a nasty villain or two (Tamara's villains are dark dark creatures-I love it- She really does a good job showing the dark side of humanity), strong women, and love. I was so rooting for Merrick and Isolde and felt they faced at time insurmountable odds!
Cannot recommend enough for historical romance fans! It is not your run of the mill romance but it complex and at times dark- which I thought was fantastic!

Sometimes life can seem too perfect. About to marry the Merrick, Duke of Moore, Isolde felt they had been made for each other and she had found that special love. But fate... No a wicked "friend" compromised the duke and made Isolde think he had been unfaithful. Now he had to marry the witch and it broke her heart.
A story of betrayal, disloyalty, heartache, intense longing and finally love beyond reason. Once I started I could not stop and as all of Tamara Gill's writing, she captured my imagination and my emotions to the point my heart was pounding for this couple..
Do not miss this amazing tale that will have you thinking about it long after the last page is turned!

ARC Review: Only A Duke Will Do (To Marry A Rogue) by Tamara Gill

With a flair for the dramatic and the heart of a dreamer, it's no wonder Tamara Gill writes romance. Her attention to imagery and the tempo of her delivery are all on full display in Only A Duke Will Do. Her vision speaks to the romantic deep within believers in love and happily ever after. Merrick and Isolde were a dream interrupted by heartbreak, but the chance to begin again was always in the cards for them. The heart will not be denied and Tamara Gill has been blessed with a haunting gift of classic proportions.

It was ok..... a little dragged out at the end and the fact that he didn't send his wife to some remote estate the other end of the country after tricking him into marriage was beyond me

On the eve of their wedding, Isobel & Merrick’s dreams come crashing down when her best friend, Leonora dupes and seduces Merrick & deliberately ensure they are in discovered in his bed.

Leonora is the daughter of a vicar & with no lofty prospects; befriended since childhood by Isobel & treated as almost one of the family. The night of wedding eve party, she drugs Merrick’s drink leaving him befuddled & intoxicated & goes to his room after he retires and seduces him while leaving a note under Isobel’s door to ensure they are discovered. All the while, Merrick is in a dreamy haze thinks he is having a lusty dream of Isobel. The wedding goes on, but with a different bride, after Leonora all but blackmail’s Isobel’s family to ensure her plans are successful. A brokenhearted Isobel secludes herself in Scotland, on a family estate. But after 5 years, she finds herself lonely and agrees to accompany a close friend for a Season in London.

I did find it rather hard to believe that Isobel and her family so easily let Leonora win when it was obvious that she was the culprit and wanted to put Merrick in a position where he had to marry her instead (blackmailing Isobel's family, honestly!). The overall tone of the story is somewhat depressing initially as both Isobel and Merrick are clearly desperately in love with each other. I’m not sure who was sadder; Isobel for her broken heart & lost trust or Merrick who has to marry Leonora it was all a set up and thinking he has lost Isobel forever. When they meet again, their pain is rather palpable. Leonora of course is a total b*****.

I initially found the book a bit hard to get into but after a few chapters I was totally immersed in the story. Interesting and absorbing though with a sad tone. I especially appreciated that the author did not make Isolde and Merrick commit adultery. Isolde especially kept herself morally strong and tries to do the correct thing no matter how much she was hurting or the temptation that was Merrick. A very satisfying journey to their HEA.

First of all, excuse me for my grammar, English is not my first language.

I have read a lot of historical dramas, but this one didn't give me the final feeling of: That was a good story. Not even, the story has 'something'.

I couldn't end reading this book.

The situations presented are unbelievable.

1. The vicar's daughter and 'friend' of the heroine: it is possible that there is someone as rotten as her, but what I could not believe is that even in the situation where she is in the Hero's room and she is smirking and laughing in the face of all the people presented, the heroine not only doesn't believe him, but even tries to help right the wrong done to such a 'friend'.

That she marries the Hero, that she has the power to blackmail 2 dukes (the Hero and the heroine's father) is unbelievable.

That after being married to the hero, she goes around Town doing as she pleases and the Hero stays at the countryside and does nothing, when at that time women have no power, so they can only do as their husbands dictate... as I repeat myself, unbelievable.

2. The 2 main character: both of them boring and so... angelical, like they cannot do anything wrong, even if they have been duped. Not so much as a bad word to the person who separated them. Both characters have so much power, but the daughter of the vicar seems to be the only one with actual power to manipulate and do whatever she wants.

3. The heroine: at Scotland depressed for 5 years and suddenly decides that she also deserves to be happy and have a family... and ends up engaged to the best 'friend' of the Hero, who doesn't loves her, but needs her money and is a rake.

And it is explained as he is the only option, as if the daughter of a Duke, maybe a bit on the shelf, but who at the beginning of the book it is described as well loved by the Society and has good looks and money, has to be conformed with the 'best friend' of her ex-fiancé...

I could continue with more examples, but I prefer to stop here.

Publisher's Description:

Without a Season, Lady Isolde Worthingham captured the Duke of Moore’s heart at a country dance. But on the eve of her wedding, a scandal that rocked the ton and sent her fleeing to Scotland alone and unwed, leaves her perfectly planned future in a tangle of disgrace and heartbreak.

Merrick Mountshaw, the Duke of Moore loathes the pitiful existence he hides from the ton. With a scandalous wife he never wanted, who flaunts her many indiscretions, life is a never-ending parade of hell. When the one woman he loved and lost returns to London, he knows he can no longer live without her.

But vows and past hurts are not easily forgotten. Love may not win against the ton when a too proper Lord and Lady play by the rules.

My Thoughts:

This is a mostly sad tale of betrayal and love lost then rediscovered.
What's a lady to do when her long time best friend betrays her in order to steal the man she was about to marry just before the wedding.
Leave town and the country in disgrace, that's what. Now five years later Isolde has returned home. Her former betrothed is married to the woman who betrayed her.

This convoluted story is heartbreaking at times. Will Isolde and Merrick get their chance together again and their Happily Ever After?

I gave this sad tale 4.25 of 5 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 3.5 of 5 flames.

I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this title.

Lady Isolde Worthingham is having a pretty bad time. If she didn't have bad luck show wouldn't have any luck at all. The night before her wedding she finds her best friend in her fiancee's bed. The "friend", Leonora, threatens to blackmail Isolde's family if the Duke doesn't marry her instead. To add insult to injury, she insists that Isolde and her family remain to watch the wedding.

Isolde hides away in Scotland for 5 years but decides it's finally time to return to London to find a husband. Who's one of the first people she sees - of course, her former fiancee Merrick, Duke of Moore. He's out in Hyde Park giving his young son a riding lesson. Meeting the Duke and Duchess of Moore at various ton events, the Duchess never passes up an opportunity to rub in what she has done.

Isolde is courted by Moore's friend Wardoor until she finally gives in and agrees to marry him. She knows he won't be faithful but she wants children. After their engagement is announced, he begins ignoring her and she thinks something is wrong. With only a few weeks to go before the wedding she begins to worry but it would be scandalous if she broke off a second engagement. With the Duchess pregnant (not with her husband's baby) things grow worse.

This is a great read - you can't help but feel sorry for Isolde and wonder if she will ever get her Happily Ever After. You feels sorry for Moore for being trapped in a loveless marriage but wonder if part of it is his own doing. This book is full of characters you'll love or hate but you won't feel indifferent.

Only a Duke Will Do is a powerful story about a subject one doesn’t always find in a romance novel, but is historically correct for the time…abuse of opium. It figures prominently in the reasons for Lady Isolde’s heartbreak on the eve of her wedding to Merrick. And when she eventually learns of its prevalence among members of her class, the knowledge saves her from making a disastrous mistake. The star-crossed lovers will eventually find their happy ending, but it is a very different journey in that the hero is married, albeit unhappily, and the heroine has to fight her attraction until circumstances make it possible for them to be together.

I appreciate the author’s tackling of a difficult subject. Opium was readily available to anyone from a barber, a confectioner, or even a stationer, although addiction wasn’t fully understood until late in the 19th century. Laudanum, used to treat most ailments, was opium based. Still, the author was able to capture some of the despair and havoc the drug caused in people’s lives. My only hesitation with the story line was that vicars (and their daughters) were totally powerless in society and the hero really didn’t have to marry the girl who planted herself in his bed on the eve of his wedding. But fiction is about suspending belief and when he did what he deemed honorable, the story was born.

It's a terrific read and I recommend it.
