From the first few pages of Nightmares (The Chronicles of Solomon Drake), I felt that creeping sense of dread that only the best urban fantasy can deliver—the kind where the supernatural doesn’t just exist in the shadows of the city, it stalks the mind itself. Nightmares by Robert York pushes the series into darker territory, blending gritty magic with psychological horror in a way that hooked me immediately. The atmosphere feels heavier this time around, with Solomon Drake navigating a world where danger isn’t always something you can fight with spells or fists. For me, that shift made the story feel more intense and immersive than ever.

What I really loved about this installment is how much pressure the story places on Solomon as a character. He’s not just a powerful wizard dealing with supernatural chaos—he’s a man trying to keep his life from collapsing while the magical world around him grows more volatile. The relationships, the politics of hidden supernatural factions, and the constant feeling that everything could unravel at any moment give the book a strong emotional core. It made me feel invested not just in the action, but in Solomon himself and the difficult choices he has to face along the way.

By the time I finished the book, it honestly felt like the series had hit a new stride. The tension builds steadily, the stakes feel higher, and the darker tone adds a layer of depth that makes the story linger after you close the book. For me, this entry captures exactly why I enjoy urban fantasy—the blend of mystery, danger, and supernatural intrigue wrapped around a compelling protagonist. It’s a gripping continuation of the saga and an easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5-star read in my book.

Each book in the Solomon Drake series just keeps getting better and better! My only complaint is that the villain should've had more page time. Stellar read!

Robert York has done it again! Nightmares is now my favorite of the Chronicles of Solomon Drake! Action, adventures, hilarious antics and dialogue! The battle and the end was absolutely fantastic! I won’t give any spoilers but there is a couple of heavy hitters in this epic contest for the world! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!! Another must read from Robert York! Thank you!! I can’t wait for Black Moon#4 in the Chronicles of Solomon Drake series!

Enjoyable & Humourous

Thoroughly enjoyed the 3rd book in the Solomon Drake series. Highly recommended. Hope to see more examples of spell generation and activation to add a little depth the to process.
