Being shot is terrible, but when you have a beautiful nurse that makes it a little easier!
Book one: The Legend of Bill Tilghman… The author recounts for us the life of Bill Tilghman, starting in his early days, working as a buffalo hunter. Including his associations with men like Bill Hitchcock, Doc Holiday, and Wyatt Earp, plus many others of the times. Right on down to his work as a Marshal of Dodge City. He continues to his becoming one of the guardsmen of Oklahoma, including his last outlaw arrest in 1924 at the age of 70. Many of the business adventures that he was involved in failed miserably, he always had to fall back on his lawman career to set himself right. The Tall Tales of the man is wonderful as Tilghman’s life was filled with exciting adventures, all for us to live again through the author’s words.
Book two: Zack Bodeway Texas Ranger… Zack Bodeway, a Texas Ranger was on the trail of an outlaw, chasing him into Oklahoma, and the Indian Territory. He accidentally rode into a bushwhack, but he at least did something right when he tied a compress to the wound. Riding out, thinking there was a fort north of him, he made it to a stagecoach stop, then fell off his horse. When he came too, he thought he had died and went to heaven, as an angel was sitting in front of him. Finally figuring out that he had not made it to heaven, but that a beautiful young widow was nursing him through his recovery. During his existence, he had found that the answer to most of his problems had always been taken care of with just the .44 that rode on his hip. But now he finds that this has caused an unexpected turn in his life.
What did I like? I certainly enjoyed this account of Bill Tilghman's life, but especially because his grandson was involved. It is too bad that he passed on without seeing the final book. When we read western books and think back to the period in our history that most of them are written within, it has always made me sad that I was born in the wrong time frame. I love the values, adventures, the men, the women, and the time. I certainly wish many times that I would walk into a time machine, and then, wham, it takes me to the period that I would love to have been born in! But, as we all know that is not going to happen, so I will just live precariously through the books written by the authors that I admire.
What will you like? Dang, the adventures, the history, the men and women, the knowledge that this was part of our history. Amazing tales, famous men from the past, a touch of romance, all wrapped up in a wonderful and exciting read. The characters are amazing and will touch your heart. The descriptions and details are exceptional, plus they will transport you back in time so that you will hear the bullets flying and the hoofbeats echoing on the plains. Smell the blood, sweat, and tears of the men and women of the past. Do not miss adding this wonderful read to your western Library.
This fellow is a great Author. I truly enjoyed these great stories that carry the reader back in time. I don't think our so called civilized society is really civilized because there will always be evil people..
.The story was a good one but the delivery was a bit off, it was done as a campfire story instead of an action packed adventure that gives us story more than just another one
I have seldom bought a book I read for free. Tillman was one of my heroes before this, now he will be at the top of my list. The book is worth buying just for his story. It made me cry at the end.
This is first of G. Wayne Tilman’s books I’ve read but it won’t be the last! I love a book that follows the history of the old west and Tilman knows how to do just that. Believe me, I’ll read every book he has to offer.
The first half was just great! I have seen the movie with Sam Elliott, which I think mirrored the book! The second was every it as good, and I am going to assume is also accurate! Really enjoyed the read!! Dave Cochran
This story reads like a story in places and a historical textbook in others. Ranger Zach Bodeway followed in his fathers footsteps as his dad was a famous rangers also before he retired When Zachs dad was killed as a railroad detective by a infamous outlaw by the name of bill Dalton, Zach vows to avenege his dad's death but outlaw Dalton is finally killed by Zachs mother before he could kill Zach. Interestly, Zach buries the outlaw without notifing the authories.
A Well Developed Early Western! Gilman did a masterful job of taking an unknown character and weaving his life among well-known historical figures with a most enjoyable refresher of their history. Tilman writes it like he was there!
