A post from KV’s Facebook group

Checking in…

I haven’t posted in here in a while. I’ve been taking a small step back from social media as a whole, as well as from my friends and everyone else, truthfully. But this group is my favorite spot on the internet, so I figured I’d give an update.

I have been struggling with writing and anxiety around my writing since August of 2020 (when Boy of Ruin released). Every book it gets worse, and I’ve had a lot of postponed and cancelled release dates because of it. In 2020, I was putting out a book nearly every other month. In 2021, I released one total.

C&V is supposed to release next, but once again, I find myself hating it and wanting to push it aside. Compound that with the fact it’s a standalone and not part of a series anyone is wanting more of, and I just don’t feel good about it.

In addition to writing problems, I’m dealing with a lot of personal life issues and my anxiety is climbing.

So what does this mean?

I’m not sure. C&V is close to being ready, but pushing myself through it and everything that follows before it publishes is becoming almost impossible (I know I have many great friends who would offer to take a look at it and I appreciate that, but passing it along is not something I want to do right now).

Like Grim Death had an ending months ago. I actually sent it to my editor (which is the final process) but then told her not to edit it because my anxiety over it not being “good enough” was too high. (Bless you, Amy, for dealing with my back and forth lol)

I don’t even know where I’m going with this exactly. Many of you have been here for years and know my mental health tangled with release dates is not a new struggle for me (just a worsening one, unfortunately). I appreciate all of you for sticking around and for having limitless encouragement. I know it’s frustrating to be looking forward to a book for months/years only to have it cancelled or pushed back last minute (I’m a reader too; I get that and accept all blame for it).

I know that most of you, too, will be happy (or claim to be happy 😂) with anything I release next. But I have so many half-finished or nearly finished projects, and I’m paralyzed by fear of putting any of them out, I’m not sure exactly what to do at this point.

My takeaway from listening and reading reader input is that you’re looking forward most to:

More Unsainted
Sinister
Unrepentant (Max & Addie’s final book)

I know for a fact Unsainted will not end this year. The other two, though… they are priorities for 2022.

So, as a reader, let me know what book you’re dying to have next. Maybe it’s just whatever one I fucking actually finish and publish and that’s fine too 😅.

I’m not ready to cancel C&V yet. I want to see where I’m at mentally in a week or so. As I mentioned, my personal life is going through some issues but I’m hoping those things work themselves out soon. So we’ll see.

But in the meantime… this is the moment to tell me exactly what book from me you’re dying for next. It helps me when I’m lost on what to work on and where to put my anxious energy.

If you read all this - thank you.
If you didn’t… I don’t blame you.

Happy hump day. 🐪
