Virginia Vaughan's Cowboy Lawmen series keeps getting better and better! This is the third book in the series but can completely work as a stand-alone. I loved getting to know Miles and Lawson in the previous books and equally loved Paul in this book. Paul is a dependable and loyal navy SEAL who needs to pass his psychology evaluation to return to active duty. His protectiveness and sense of justice make him quite the hero. Shelby is the psychologist who is to complete his evaluation but her life derails when she's targeted by someone attempting to kill her. Both have regrets and losses, hold tightly to what they believe is the right thing to do and have a hard time letting go of control. But when Paul becomes involved in keeping Shelby safe, they need to learn that the One who is fully in control always has something more and better in store for them. The plot has twists and turns, non-stop action and suspense, narrow escapes, and a seemingly invisible villain that will have you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. The story line is well-crafted and the characters are lovable. The author addresses PTSD with respect and heart for those who suffer from it.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series about their little sister Kellyanne. I received the book via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

A suspenseful read, filled with heart-pounding twists and turns along the way.

Shelby Warren is a psychologist who specializes in evaluating soldiers after traumatic incidents before they can return to active duty. SEAL Paul Avery sees his time with Shelby as the last hurdle before returning to his team. But when a killer comes after Shelby, Paul jumps into action offering to help her get to the bottom of things before time runs out.

A fast paced, twisting read, the whole time I was reading this book I couldn't stop thinking about how fortunate Shelby was that she happened to be working with a man like Paul when all of this was going down, because without him who would she have turned to for help? Paul is a man of action who thinks on his feet and takes his duty to his country seriously. I loved Paul's family, they are are all wonderful and supportive people, and his brother, who may be familiar to some, share his dedication to courageously protecting others.

Overall, an exciting read, with moments of high suspense, as well as moments that help grow and develop the characters and their growing relationship. Shelby is passionate about her job, but sometimes it can get in the way and she can't stop herself from analyzing Paul psychologically. A solid read, with a great plot, characters, and sharp twists that kept me guessing! Definitely worth checking out!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

“God, please keep her safe. The prayer came as easily and naturally as if his heart had always been open to God. Because it definitely was open now-wide open with all he felt for Shelby.”

Texas Target Standoff is the third book in the Texas Lawman series. Psychologist Shelby Warren treats military men and women wanting to return to active duty after a psychological injury. Shelby chose this career after losing her brother from the trauma that he experienced. Paul Avery, Navy Seal, needs an evaluation and Shelby is hired to complete his evaluation. She needs to witness his daily routine in order to get a through exam. But when this is about to happen, Shelby becomes a target. Paul is determined to keep her safe at all costs. Will she be able to help Paul fulfill his desire to return to active duty?

Mrs. Vaughn never fails in producing an adrenaline pumping story that keeps you on the edge until you realize who the bad guy is. I totally thought I had it figured out but Mrs. Vaughn always throws a curve ball to keep it interesting. I love that about her intense suspense stories. That’s why I can never wait for the next release to come out. She always leaves me wanting more.

I really enjoyed this story. It was nice visiting the Avery family once again and getting Paul’s story. The setting at the ranch is always enjoyable. I enjoyed the faith element that’s always present in her stories. Both Paul and Shelby have a troubled past that they need to overcome in order to build up their trust for others once more. Mrs. Vaughn never fails to produce a page turner that encompasses these elements. I received a complimentary copy from the author. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review. All opinions stated here are my own.

I enjoyed this entertaining romantic suspense novel even though I had a few issues with it. It is unusual in that the romance is between a psychologist, Shelby, and her patient, Paul. Shelby realizes the ethical issues but the romance seemed inappropriate to me.

I have a pet peeve with plots which develop suspense because of stupid actions on the part of the characters. That happens several times in this novel. Shelby and Paul drive, unguarded, two hours to see her files in storage, after there have been several attempts on her life. With modern technology, they could have had someone go to her storage and video the journal pages or there could have been protection traveling along with them. But no. And, of course, suspense ensues. Shelby acts unwisely several times on her own, bringing on danger to herself. She even admits she'd been foolish and acted recklessly. (2425/2725) I like a heroine who is smart yet outwitted by the villain. I did not find that here.

This is an entertaining romance with plenty of suspense if readers are willing to overlook what I felt were plot defects.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

The main characters in this Christian suspense novel, Paul and Shelby, have both experienced pain and heartache in their lives. Because of the tragic death of her brother, Shelby takes seriously her job in evaluating veterans as to their fitness for returning to their military service. As she is meeting with Paul, he saves from Shelby a sniper’s attack. The sniper escapes, but his attacks against Shelby keep escalating. Not only are Paul and Shelby on the run to keep Shelby safe, they are trying to determine who has hired the sniper and why Shelby would be their target.

What I enjoyed the most about this book were the well-timed twists in the storyline. Just when I would think I knew who was behind the attacks, the author would throw in another turn that would take me by surprise. This storyline doesn’t follow the usual timing of a suspense story and that added to the intensity in the action. Readers of Christian suspense will enjoy this book.

I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This book starts slow and without a good hook, but hang in there because the action does start, and once it does, it doesn't stop.

Who-dun-it and why? Good questions! I had a hard time figuring it out. And the attacks were vicious. I wouldn't have survived. There is a faith message, and like I said, non-stop action.

If you like romantic suspense, grab your copy today.

Thank you in advance to the author, Virginia Vaughan, for providing a complimentary review copy. A positive review was not required or requested, and all words are my own.

Although I had the author’s book, Killer Insight, it wasn’t until Texas Twin Abduction that I read a book by the author. And, let me just say … WOW! The book that starts this series starts of with a bang! And, Vaughan carries that momentum into book #2 – Texas Holiday Hideout.

Each book revolves around one of the Avery siblings.

Book #1 – Lawson Avery
Book# 2 – Miles Avery
Book #3 – Paul Avery

While this COULD act as a standalone read, it truly is best read as part of the series to get the full idea of each of the brothers’ backgrounds and connections since they do make appearances in the book. This one is as suspenseful and intense as the previous two books.

This is Paul’s story and if the cover is intense looking and eye-catching, so too is the story. It starts off with a literal bang while he’s in the middle of a visit with psychologist visit with Dr. Shelby Warren.

Each one of them has a secret that impacts their goals – for Shelby, it is her brother as to why she wants to keep soldiers from going back too soon. For Paul, it is Terry who he not only uses to ground himself; but also a guide to balance himself. As a result, this deals quite a bit with the effects of PTSD, which might be a bit of a trigger for some readers who can identify – either for themselves or a family member.

It is clear, right off, that Shelby is the intended target – though the why is elusive, or is it?

Right off, I did not like Shelby’s practice partner, David. There was just something in him I DID NOT LIKE.

Shelby decides to plan a “home” visit to interview Paul’s family to assess his readiness as well as see the conditions he lives under. She is a bit of a skeptic of “self-reporting” when it comes to problems. When there’s another attempt on her life – it is perfect timing – to head to where Paul is staying.

While this is a spoiler, I wanted to mention it as I’d seen it in FBI: Most Wanted – Shelby’s car system is hacked causing her to lose control of the vehicle. That is something that is really quite terrifying.

But, even heading to Courtland County isn’t enough to get the killer to back off. And, I had to wonder how the person kept finding Shelby. Readers are going to be shocked to find out who the real culprit is. While the reason for one character’s motive is clear, there is another character that lurks in the shadows and is a bit of a surprise.

Throughout shootings and bomb threats, Vaughan keeps the action going so well that it is hard to investigate, or even take a breath. Paul and Shelby’s romance is bordering between “will they” or “won’t they”, but in a natural way.

I really enjoyed the suspense of this story as well as the “whys” and “whats” of counseling. It was engaging as well as thrilling. While a bit calmer than some Love Inspired Suspense on the action, this still got my pulse rate up at times.

While this was mainly about Paul and Shelby, this is the second book that completely omits Ashlee (Bree’s twin from Texas Twin Abduction). While she isn’t directly connected to the main characters, she is Bree’s twin. I am definitely interested to see what’s up with her since the end of that book.

As this is the suspense version of “Love Inspired”; there will be themes of forgiveness, redemption, and second chances. There are also references to God and prayer, but are not a central theme and not important to the overall plot of the story.

Fans of the genre, those who’ve read the previous two books, and those who enjoy the Love Inspired Suspense books are sure to love this book!! This was another “day” read for me, so obviously I had some issues putting it down.

I can’t wait to read the fourth (4th) book in the series which will feature the Avery sister – Kellyanne.

If you enjoy a really good suspense novel, this is the book for you. This story not only deals with suspense of figuring out who and why someone is trying to kill the heroine, but it also adds in the subject of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). When a hero suffering from PTSD has the additional role of stopping an assassin, it provides a winning suspense formula for the reader. In addition, the story deals with the various ways PTSD manifests itself in some of other characters. Kudos to the author for including this issue into the storyline.

This is definitely another winner for this author. While this book is part of a series, it may be read as a standalone. However, reading the previous two books in the series will definitely provide enjoyable reads.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by the author via BookFunnel but the thoughts and opinions in this review are totally my own.

She can ruin his career, can he save her life?

Let me start by saying that it's because of books like Texas Target Standoff that I enjoy Love Inspired Suspense, and in particular Virginia Vaughan, as much as I do. I liked it almost as much as I did the first Cowboy Lawmen novel, Texas Twin Abduction, which is my favorite Virginia Vaughan book of all time....for now at least.

Texas Target Standoff had all of the danger, mystery, drama, tension, and romance my little mayhem-loving heart could wish for. It's a fairly short read but the author packs all of the action and suspense she can into approximately 220 pages.

Fans of Virginia Vaughan and Love Inspired Suspense are sure to love her Cowboy Lawmen series. Texas Target Standoff is book 3 but each one can be read standalone. I can tell you from personal experience, though, that you won't want to miss a single one!

If you need a quick suspense novel fix, this is definitely your go-to! The author writes an excellent storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you try to figure out who is out to get psychologist Shelby Warren. The action is nonstop and quite believable with a dash of romance even in the jam-packed book that is just over two hundred pages. Love Inspired Suspense by Harlequin is shorter than a typical novel and easily read in a quicker time frame. It’s definitely a win, win situation if you are pressed for time. The author has an excellent backlist that I intend to check out. I would love to see what this author could do with a full-length novel.

I started and finished this book yesterday. I couldn't put it down. I had to know who the "bad guy" was. It was a fast moving and very exciting book to read. There was never a lull in the action. I felt like I was right there with the characters experiencing their danger-filled situations firsthand. Thank you Virginia Vaughan for writing such an intriguing story. It kept me guessing for sure. I am reviewing this book for the author and this is my honest opinion.

The story starts off from page one with action and it does NOT let up. I got so involved with this story that I was late leaving to meet my kid after school! Shelby's boss had my dislike from the start but everyone else I liked alot. I had some doubts about if I was reading a inspirational or not. It wasn't over the top like some inspirational stories but it was just enough. 😊
The message of the story was exactly what I needed right now, and I have to say I enjoyed it A LOT!! 😊😁😍

This is such a great read! Navy Seal Paul Avery springs into action to protect Shelby Warren a psychologist who he needs her evaluation to get back to his team! Paul Avery hadn't convinced her yet he was ready to get back to his team. Danger follows Shelby to Paul's family ranch in Texas little did they realize Shelby's safety would be his biggest assignment yet! I gave this a 5 star because it is such a great book! If you haven't read and you like suspense and romance you need to read this book! This is a page turner I picked it up and didn't want to put in down!

Cowboy Lawman Series
By, Virginia Vaughan

Book 1: Texas Twin Abduction
Book 2: Texas Holiday Hideout
Book 3: Texas Target Standoff

Texas Target Standoff grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let go till the very end. Dr. Shelby Warren can't catch a break but thankfully Navy SEAL Paul Avery is close by when she needs him.

A little bit of romance, a whole lot of suspense, and just the right amount of God.
