With Blight’s crushing defeat, Elric and the others have saved the world from most certain destruction. But life as teenage superheroes aren’t what you think. Amidst the crumbling infrastructure of society and going back to high school, regaining any form of normalcy has become impossible. Especially with a dark entity whispering in your ear to destroy everything in sight.
Just finished Titans: Dark Catalyst Wooo!!! Here are my thoughts: Pros: The story is compelling as a whole. A superhero team, a teenager with unstable emotions, government and power in politics, dark vs light etc. The world Lloyd has created makes sense for how the story unfolds. There aren’t many dull moments and there’s always something happening.
Cons: (this could be a pro to some, actually) There are so many characters. I have forgotten how they’re all connected or what powers they each have. Some are not human, some are human, some are titans, some are old and more like a mentor, some are siblings, some like each other, some are enemies - it was hard to understand how everyone is connected and why. I started to ignore and tried to just read through some of the side characters parts.
Elric emotions are described and are big a part of what keeps the story moving. It’s not as much of a rollercoaster from dark to light as I expected/would have enjoyed. Maybe that’s just me since the love/internal struggle to be good is what makes a story really juicy for me. *Spoiler-ish* Elric is bad, but it was never very clear to me, as the reader, what his end goal was. To flatten things and start again was vague and a little unconvincing. He needed a bit more of a Thanos feel to make me sure he’d wipe out everything.
Lloyd’s description of places gets better the further into the book you read. There are gaps here and there where the characters are doing something, then suddenly they’re somewhere else, but it doesn’t interrupt the story much. I’m a very visual reader- I’ll read a few pages multiple times just to be sure I have a clear picture in my head and there were times I was unable to do that. Again, that’s just me and I’m sure if you have a bigger imagination than I do those gaps would be more tightly filled in.
*spilers-ish* It’s an entire book of battle after battle after battle. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good fight between equally matched super hero’s! However, every few pages the same thing happens: buildings fall down, the land become rubble, cars get turned over and blasts of energy from whichever character destroys more buildings and knocks the others down. At some point the population of normal humans in these areas just isn’t talked about anymore.
*Character spoilers* Maybe I just couldn’t grasp this many characters, but I never really got who Alfred, Sage and Samantha are. Then there’s Manie and Maddison. Zaroul died but he was kind of Violets dad? Anyways, there’s a LOT going on with the group of them and I’ve had a hard time remembering who is what and how each are connected. Then they all have some sort of powers or monster, too. I really enjoy character development and the first book could have used a little more so that I could keep better track for this book.
*More spoilers* All in all!!!! Lots of characters crying. Lots of battles. Lots of anger and desperation. The story as a whole and the world Lloyd created for this series is great! SO much potential to reach further into this world and create more details and back stories. I enjoyed reading the second book! I’ll be interested in seeing where the third book goes. With Elric dead - or probably not dead, IMO???- we’ll see where the US government can become involved to help clean up and normalize Earth and its humans. Maybe. Or maybe Allure will just flatten everything else. Oh, and then there’s Calamity too! What’s up with her? I hope I find out more about her. Side note: the spelling and editing had a big improvement from book 1 to book 2.

I read through the first book in the Titan's series (Rise of Legends) in the hopes that the writing would improve in the second book: well, it didn't get any WORSE, so there's that. There's so much promise in the story and world-building here... it's just tough working my way through the growing pains! The characters have been mainly unlikeable thus far, the story itself has been too many disparate parts that are taking too long to come together to hold my interest... I'm going to keep reading the series, in the hopes that it finds its footing. Fingers crossed!
How can you not love a story filled with great characters and lots of action? Add to that one that doesn't go where you expect it to, and you've got a true page turner!
I highly recommend this series, not just for kids, but for all of us who want a fun, exciting read that will take us to another world, even if only for a visit.
This is one you'll want to enjoy again and again. Lucky for us, the author has even more to come!
I'm truly enjoying the unpredictability of this series along with everything else it has to offer.
The action is non-stop, and the characters are diverse and more than cheer-worthy. This author has created a world we can see, feel, and just about taste it's so vivid and close to today's reality.
