3.5 stars — This one started off a little slower and…something for me. Like, the writing felt a little more basic. But then I got sucked in and enjoyed myself to the end, so not sure if it was me or what.

I will mention right now that this is a young new adult book. I don’t personally mind those, I feel like characters in that age range don’t have to be all sophistication and sex, but I know it can have the expectation. Both Cat and Jesse came across a bit younger than I initially expected for 19 and 23. Not unrealistic, it just threw me off and took me a minute to adjust. As such the steam factor was super low, but the kisses were fantastic and the romance was sweet.

Cat felt so sheltered in some ways…but it was like a self-imposed sheltered. I loved how truly enthralled she was with caving and all that went with that — I got excited watching her get excited. I worried that her walls were too high and she’d start to annoy me, but she had a lot of people in her life to bounce problems off of, and it worked…her growth was realistic.

Jesse was really not at all what I expected from this celebrity read. My heart broke for the grief he was struggling with, and the guilt that went along with it. I loved seeing the relationship he was developing with Otto, even though they hadn’t talked much prior to his visit. It was nice to see him have people who loved and supported him, and that eventually included Cat.

They were pretty cute together — a classic crush to more dealio. Like I said, it was completely different from what I was expecting from a celebrity romance, but I wasn’t disappointed.

There were some fun secondary characters in this one — from Cat’s sisters, to her parents, to her Aunt Glory, to Otto. They all added colour and support.

So yeah. Solid romance. I’m not sure I’ll continue with Val and Audrey’s stories, but I did enjoy Cat’s.

Lora Richardson has done it again! She's amazing at describing first love, with all it entails!

I like that it moves slowly, even though both Cat and Jesse feel the attraction from the beginning. I also appriciate that Richardson doesn't add unnecessary drama to the story. It does not mean that it's boring or uneventful, just that it doesn't need a lot of drama to be interesting. She brings a fair amount of "heavy" subjects to the table anyway, and although it's easy to read it's not just shallow and superficial.

The characters are lovely, and I can really relate to Cat in many ways. I'm certainly no "Cave Girl" but, like Cat, I prefer to plan things ahead and to know what's going to happen. We both enjoy the familiar because it's safe. And I can definitely relate to Cat's fear of the Hollywood world and being recognised everywhere. For obvious reasons I can't feel the same connection to Jesse, but I don't have to - I like him all the same! Grandpa Otto is philosophical and wise, but not without flaws. We also get to know Cat's younger twin sisters a little and I'm looking forward to reading their stories!

(I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review.)

Well, the main characters are young adults but we learn from everyone in Alden a little bit of themselves. Otto is Jesse's grandpa. Jesse needed to get away from Hollywood and he figured Alden (small town in Indiana) was a great getaway. He and his mom ran there when his father was abusive. It lasted only 2 years but Jesse felt safe there. I love small towns. We had a movie actor in town and while everyone loved him we got used to him in our hardware store or walking down the street. So I could identity. I have trouble leaving town like Cat.

What a pleasant story. You really get well developed characters. I was really frightened in the caves. Author made the experience real!
Jesse and Cat were really wonderful characters.

This was an incredibly heartwarming, dreamy, and loveable book! I enjoyed it sooooo much! Just take my word on this. The synopsis didn't do it justice.

I was sucked in from page one. We immediately get a good look at who Cat and Jesse are. The story alternates between their POVs so we also get to know what each is thinking and feeling throughout the story. I loved that we got both POVs because it intensified the feels ten times over. Ugh. How can I properly explain how much I loved this book!

Jesse was another well-thought-out character. He comes to Cat's hometown suffering a great loss and trying to find a way to escape all the pain he's feeling. I thought the portrayal of his grief was really well done. It's not skipped over or dismissed after falling in love but also doesn't completely consume the storyline and bring everything down. The author did a great job of balancing this tough emotion and subject.

As well, Jesse is just such a loveable character. He truly cares for those around him and doesn't seem like a typical movie-star character I feel like we see in every book. He felt different but just as glamorous and "unobtainable". I loved this character so much!!

Cat is such an interesting character and I loved getting to know her. She knows that she wants to stay in her hometown and work in the local caves, but doesn't realize that she's still missing something in her life. She doesn't move out of her comfort zone very often when it comes to anything, including guys. But she's so kind, terribly dedicated to her family, and to her job/hobby. She was a great pairing to Jesse especially when it came to working with him and supporting him through his grief. I don't think the author could have made a better equal.

Although the storyline didn't have tons of shocks and adventures and twists and turns, I never felt bored. The book is very well paced out and does a great job of keeping the reader entertained while addressing all the issues in the story. Along with this, we get a great cast of characters that have diverse interests and personalities and keep the story moving along really well.

Also, I thought this story might be a little odd because the synopsis made it seem like Cat was some weirdo that only hung out with one old man, but it wasn't weird at all! The old man, Otto, is very funny, still very much able, and runs a cave business that Cat works at. It wasn't some odd relationship that made her "different than other girls". Just wanted to point that out.

I felt like the ending was a little abrupt. I kinda expected there to be a little more conflict before the ending came which was why I was surprised when the book just ended. That being said, I don't think it takes away from the story. I might have preferred it a little, but I enjoyed the book all the same.

Overall, this was wonderful book about self-discovery, forgiveness, and finding love in the darkest of times. I will recommend this book to everyone I know!!

At nineteen years old, Cat was right where she wanted to be. Deciding that college wasn't for her, and having no desire to leave her small town, Cat was happiest when she was at the caverns, the local attraction where she worked. The owner, Otto, was a combination of boss, best friend, and surrogate grandfather. When Otto's grandson Jesse arrived unexpectedly at the start of the summer, Cat was initially wary but they soon formed a friendship that seemed to have the potential for so much more. When Jesse's secret is revealed, Cat has to decide between the safety of her small town and taking a leap into in a world that is totally unfamiliar.

Cat was such a sweet girl and so easy to like. My favorite thing about her was how well she knew herself and what she wanted. She had the courage to go against what was expected of her (heading to college right after high school) and forge her own path instead. Having spent nearly ever day at the caverns since she was eleven years old, they were both her passion and where she felt most at home.

description

At twenty-four, Jesse had become a household name as an actor but a tragic accident left him reeling and feeling unmoored. He retreated to the small town of Alden, Indiana and the grandfather he hadn't seen in years. He found a place where he could grieve in peace and just be himself. Meeting Cat was just what he needed and her forthright nature pushed him to open up.

Jesse and Cat balanced each other so well. She was practical and liked to have a plan; he was more spontaneous and willing to go with the flow. They became such a great support system for one another and I loved their talks and they way they truly listened to one another. When Cat realized that being a part of Jesse's life meant leaving her comfort zone, he never pushed her but instead promised to be by her side and support her when she was feeling unsure.

Lora Richardson has a real gift at creating characters who are genuine and earnest and completely without artifice. They come from small towns and care about family and friends. It's a refreshing change from the jaded, hipster, mature-beyond-their-years characters in so many contemporary YA novels. Broken Hollywood delivered a coming of age story with a side of sweet romance. And, as always, Richardson has me coming back for more.

Another feel good, give you butterflies read from Lora Richardson! This author has never disapointed, and this book was no exception.

From first kiss jitters to the amazing way just holding hands can make you feel, she perfectly captures all the turmoil and emotions first love brings. When she could have brought in unneeded drama, she kept it focused more on how the characters solved each issue as it came their way, and they focused on what was important, the way way they felt for each other.

A perfect example of how a clean romance can still be oh so satisfying, and how a new adult romance can still resonate with an older crowd. I was broken hearted only when it ended, because despite its happy ending I could have read about these characters for days! I'll eagerly anticipate the next book in this series!

I loved every character in the book. My favorite is Otto and I hope he does live to be 100 from his very bland food.
Their love story was so cute, I felt that Cat was kind of being selfish. Instantly she said no way, I don’t want a movie star girlfriend life. She needs to grow and I’m glad that by the end she was finally starting too. Jessie is really understanding about what she wanted, which is really sweet but I’m also glad he doesn’t have to give up his dream as well.
The two of them were so worried someone would call the tabloids to announce to the world where he was hiding, I thought it was going to happen and kind of disappointed it didn’t. There wasn’t any drama to make it seem like he was this huge movie star, it felt like no one was really interested in where he was honestly.

The story is terribly slow and overly naive. Where it’s easy to get Jesse an empathy with him, it’s an all other story with Cat, for me she just childish and put the story down

I really enjoyed this book. Jesse was grieving the death of his best friend, James, and I think that Lora did a good job at showing his process, and that all of his grief didn't immediately disappear the second that him and Cat started falling for each other. I started this book a few days after I had to say goodbye to my dog (coincidentally, her name is Jessie), so all of those feelings were and still are, fresh. That being said, I do think that reading this book helped me feel better. Honestly, this might be a bit of a spoiler, but I was expecting Otto to die during the book, but he didn't, which was good, because that would have been awful.

I liked how Jesse and Cat's relationship developed. I find it a bit hard to believe that she wouldn't of recognized him, but it fit the plot that she didn't. I admire her sister Valerie's insistence on standing up for Cat and not liking Jesse on principle that he lied, or rather, omitted, his identity. That's how I am with my friends (although if one of them was 'dating' a famous actor...I might change my tune). Both of Cat's sisters, and her whole family, were really great characters, and I'm excited to read each of the twins' stories. Normally, the families of main characters aren't all that supportive, but I love that they are all so close knit.

Cat and Jesse were so cute together. I liked that their relationship progressed slowly, with Cat being afraid to take things too fast, or date in general. I thought it was actually really mature of her. I can't wait to see her pop up in the rest of the books in the series! Overall, this was a really good read, and I recommend it to anyone who loves new adult romance books that have dual POVs. There isn't really any sexual content, so I'd say it's relatively clean and suitable for teens.

"Can you set all that aside? Can you just see me? This can work. I don't know what my future will be, but right now and standing here in front of you. JJst me, nothing else. Peel the rest of it away. I'm just me in here, Cat." -Jesse

This was such a sweet read. It was short but it was a good read.

Broken and hurting Jesse Relic leaves Hollywood to grieve his friend, James. So he goes and stays with his grandfather he hasn't seen and forever.

Meets Catherine who works for his grandfather and pretty much an adopted granddaughter.

Simple.

But, while he was there, he was barely brooding and grieving aside from a couple moments but it was too focused on building the romance between them.

I didn't see a glimpse of an actual grief affecting his time while he was there. Cat finally finding out he's an actor is an expected reaction although she gave in and gave him a chance anyway.

We then get to see this big actor life that Jesse has towards the end. I was expecting a big, more complicated things to happen as he introduces Cat to his world. No big media blowup. I was kinda disappointed.

The ending where he pretty much proposed. . . she's only 19. It's like she doesn't really ever have a plan but to stay in the caves. 🤣

Although, I liked the book, the elements I like aren't there. It's a very sweet, short simple read.

Jesse❤Cat are lovable at least.

I’m not a big fan of Young Adult romance (the characters usually annoy me with their immaturity), but I enjoyed Broken Hollywood. Cat was straightforward and self-possessed, but a little too comfortable in her small, quiet life. Jesse was a bit of a mess, needing space and time to grieve, but he loves his job as an actor. The relationship built slowly and the attraction was not based on sex which was refreshing.

The setting of a cave/cavern was unusual; it gave the characters a safe place to be themselves without “outside” influences, and it provided for the turning event when Cat is injured. (nitpick: it’s unrealistic that no one in the town of Alden – or any of the hundreds of people touring the caverns – alerted the media to the fact that movie star Jesse Relic is there.)

There’s a journey here for both characters, which is what good fiction is all about. I do think Jesse displayed an unlikely level of introspection and situational awareness (at 23), even considering the trauma he just experienced. I was happy for these characters when they got their HEA, but I did feel the ending was a bit rushed; Cat entered Jesse’s (Hollywood) world for a grand total of ONE day – not enough to have a clue about what it truly entails – and everyone is wonderful to her (where were the jealous females??). Even so, I was happy these two found a compromise and would recommend this book.

This is the kind of romance story where you get so pulled into it that you don’t realize that so much time has passed, you’re much further into the book that you expected, and your stomach has been grumbling for dinner for who-knows-how-long.

I really enjoyed reading about Cat and her sisters, Otto and his grandson, and all the little bits about the town of Alden and the caverns nearby. First love is already really heady, and Cat certainly has that going for her, but throw in the geekiness of a girl who loves caving and fossils, values her family, knows her own mind - you’ve got a great, compelling, female character.

I started this book at 9:30pm, stayed up late reading while the house cooled down, and then got up early again to do nothing but finish the book. I didn’t even realize I’d started the coffeemaker and it had been finished for over an hour until it beeped the “I’m turning off” sound and I was a chapter to the end of the book! A story that can make me forget my morning coffee until nearly 11am? Good stuff!

I was provided an advance copy of the ebook by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I love Jesse and Cat! 💕

I really enjoyed this book! Celebrity romances are a fave of mine especially when the hero is the star falling for a normal girl. I loved that Jesse was not the cocky bad boy but a good guy who fell head over heels for Cat. It was so sweet to see Jesse fight for Cat and never give up because he knew that they belonged together and were worth fighting for. I also loved Otto! My only wish was for an epilogue set five or so years in the future showing how they are doing, how big of star Jesse is now, has the media given them a “couple name”, are the they are married (I would have loved to have “seen” the wedding, do they have any kids etc... But overall it was a very sweet, young adult romance that I will read again!

This was a super cute read! I really liked all of the characters, especially Otto. That old man holds a special place in my heart because he reminds me so much of my grandpa. I loved how passionate Cat was about the caves and how Jessie would describe her when she talked about them. His inner dialogue about Cat is my favorite. I wish there would have been a little more drama with their relationship in regards to Jessie's celebrity status, maybe seeing a little bit more into his world, but it's not something that the story necessarily needs. I just didn't want the book to end!

I wanted this story to be better than it was. I liked the characters and I liked that Cat was into caves and fossils. But just when the story really started getting interesting, when they were trapped in the cave, the author skimmed over that... they were trapped deep in the cave, he saved her, she went to the hospital got a cast, then it was 6 weeks later and the cast was off...There wasn't enough conflict. I didn't feel that either of the characters really grew that much and that was disappointing... BUT, I still liked the book.

This book was adorable. I do admit it’s refreshing to have a clean romance now and then and just enjoy the magic of picnics, country swims and just the magic of first falling in love. Jesse and Cat are each solid characters and the author certainly paints a picture of an adorable young actor in Jesse. It’s charming to see him humble and to dislike the fame, yet not push it. Grandpa Otto with his cave roaring and terrible cooking is honestly one of the cutest side characters I’ve met in ages.

This was a short cute romance book. The first book of a trilogy but it can be read as a standalone book.
Catherine{Cat} loves caves and has since she was a kd. Otto owns the caves and she works for him. Then hs grandson shows up. He is a hollywood movie star who just lost his best friend and needed to get away . Cat has no idea who he is because she doesn't really watch TV or movies. So when they meet there is a little bit of a clash and then they get to know each other and there are sparks. She is 19 and never even been kissed.

I loved this clean romance that follows Jesse, a Hollywood star trying to escape the glamour, and Cat, a small town girl living her dream of exploring caves. I love Cats relationship with her parents and sisters. Her Aunt Glory is just as snarky and sassy as she is! There’s a HEA with no cliffhangers. I would consider this New Adult since the main characters are 19 and 23.

I am reviewing ”Broken Hollywood” after reading a free ARC copy from the author.
A beautifully written novel about finding oneself, getting out of ones comfort zone, dealing with grief, and the blessing of family (no matter how complicated the relationship).
I totally fell in love with Cat and Jesse, and the way their romance blossomed.
A clean, slow-burn romance, suitable for young adult readers and up.

Oh wow, I loved this story. Cat is the nerdy cave girl who is content in her life working at the caves. Jesse visits his grandfather, the owner of the caves, after a tragedy hits while he's filming in Hollywood, he needs time out to deal with his grief. Cat has no idea Jesse is a movie star. Her naivety is refreshing to Jesse and their relationship grows. But they're from two different worlds, so how will it work? Dreamy, swoony romance!

I loved this book! It was just a lovely well written easy to read story that had me invested from the start. A clean romance - I usually like a bit of heat in my books, but it didn’t bother me here - the characters are so well done.
Everyone needs an Aunt Glory in their life.
I loved the extra knowledge woven through the book too about the caves. Interesting stuff!

A small town, celebrity romance with heart.
While this is basically a small town romance, I was glad we did get to see Jessie in his celebrity role, albeit only briefly.
The characters were likeable and the story captured and kept my attention. The cave setting was an added bonus and gave everything a unique feeling.
Recommended for those who enjoy clean romance.
