Just One Kiss

Rate this book
Hannah Stark takes care of everyone else, from the patients she nurses back to health, to her family, who can never seem to get it together. She'd love to find someone she can trust, someone she can lean on, someone she can love, but that someone will not be Jake McKenna. The ruggedly attractive owner of Adventure Sports might still make her palms sweat, but Jake broke her teenage heart years ago.

In the twelve plus years since they were a couple, Jake has given up on forgiveness from Hannah. He'd really like the chance to set the record straight, but that would mean revealing secrets he has sworn to protect. So, they dance around each other, never getting close enough to the lingering sparks to start another fire.

A stormy Christmas eve at the lake changes everything. A woman in trouble and a death-defying rescue gives them a chance to start over as they are now—if they can find the courage to trust each other. Will these two enemies turn into lovers, or will they reject the fate that has once again thrown them together?

The Hero and heroine were high school sweethearts but it's said early on they broke up as he cheated but there seems more too it.
Circumstances mean they are spending time together.

During separation, 12 years.
Hero 'Even when you're with other women, you're never really with them."
"That's not true," he said, frowning at his brother's analysis of his love life.'

There is also a conversation to show the heroine had relationships, one lasted a year.

It was a bit frustrating as the facts of the cheating incident are not known to the reader or the heroine, which is kept til the end.
HEA.

Details of cheating.

Around Prom he witnessed his father doing something that was bad and he got drunk and had sex with another girl then to not have to explain or reveal his father's sordid secret he made light of his relationship with the heroine making her believe they weren't special.
There are no intimate scenes of the cheating, just that it happened.

This is the 4th installment of the Whisper Lake series and can be read alone, but all of the books from the series are very good.

The story begins with Hanna on her way to check on a tenant matter with her family rental only to discover that there is a child waiting for her. While on her way to the location, she runs in to Jake, an ex-boyfriend, who broke her heart and also the last person she wants to see. They have questions for this little child, Brett, who can only tell them that she will take care of him until his mom returns. Hanna realizes that this little boy is not a stranger and they are connected and that his mother may be in serious trouble. Jake has decided that he is vested with Hanna's circumstance and will do what he can to protect her and the child. The two are getting closer than they expected and soon old feelings surface. Hanna is trying to resist, but Jake feels the timing is perfect for them to start again.

This story not only had a suspenseful plot, but there was a bit of a holiday theme to help add to the miracle that Little Brett has wished for Christmas. Whisper Lake is that place you want to visit and never leave.

Always love Barbara’s books, but this one I struggled with. I love Hannah, she’s clearly worked hard for herself and her family, and is willing to do whatever it takes to care for those she loved. Jake was a great character, I enjoyed him as well, especially his adventures. But it seemed so unbelievable for Hannah to go from hating Jake (unresolved historical anger from their previous relationship) to loving him in seven days. I would like to see Hannah, Jake, Hannah’s mom, Jake’s dad, and Kelly in therapy for their trauma and issues. The only characters that seemed well rounded and stable were the brothers, although that could have been because both were barely seen. I did love the kiddo tho, he was adorable. All in all, this second chance romance wasn’t what I had hoped it would be.

Just One Kiss is a tale of family, forgiveness, and second chances. Hannah and Jake had been a couple in high school until a secret caused Jake to break her heart. She wants nothing more to avoid him, and he just wants a second chance to come clean for his actions and to see if they can have a relationship again.

Poor Hannah has had a lot of pain in her life, so I understood her reluctance to let him in again. I admired her strength not only in the present, but what she did in the past to make sure her younger brother had a good life despite their alcoholic mother. While I didn’t care for Jake’s actions when he was in high school, I did admire his determination to set things right and his willingness to confront the past and the secret that brought an end to their relationship.

There’s some mystery and suspense thrown in with Hannah’s missing sister. As Jake and Hannah work together to find her and figure out why she’s on the run, the pair slowly begin to repair their relationship. Hannah not only has to work to forgive Jake, but her mother and sister as well.

If you enjoy second chance romances with a bit of mystery and suspense thrown in, Just One Kiss is the book for you!

Once I started reading, I didn’t want to put the book down. It broke my heart that Hannah and Jake were so in love in high school, and something happened where Jake broke Hannah’s heart. Unfortunately Hannah’s father had died in a car crash when she was 14 and this broke her family up. It was sad that her mother blamed everything on Hannah’s older sister Kelly. Kelly and her mom fought and Kelly left and they haven’t heard from her in 15 years. Hannah’s mother drank, and Hannah ended up raising her younger brother Tyler. Hannah and Tyler went through more than children should go through.

Hannah is older and an emergency room nurse. Now Hannah and Jake are back in their small town. I felt bad that Hannah could not forgive Jake and would manage to go the other way when she saw him. Something terrible happens that brings the two back together with a truce. Jake does all he can to show Hannah she can trust him now. There are secrets to get through, dangerous people, and forgiveness. There are some exciting moments that kept me reading so I could see what was going to happen. It’s a great book that I strongly encourage you to read. I was given a copy of the book and voluntarily wrote a review.

Welcome back to Whisper Lake !
Hannah and Jake were high school friends , then sweethearts until he cheated on her in a public way.
Jake wants a do over and wants Hannah to see him as a grown up and not the 17 year old kid who messed up
Hannah’s mom gets a call from their rental cabin visitor that the heat is off, sending Hannah to fix it when she gets a flat tire and Jake rescues her, they arrive at the cabin and find a 4 year old boy all alone, but not just any boy, Hannah’s estranged sisters son This brings Hannah and Jake closer as the days of taking care of her nephew continue.

This is a story of family , second chances, forgiveness, secrets and love with the wonderful residents of Whisper Lake during the Christmas season, a time for miracles to happen!
A wonderful addition to this series!

Freethy continues to expand her understanding of emotion and share it with the rest of the world. Her insight is a reminder that beauty can be found in every aspect of life. Hidden inside the ugliness that life throws our way, is the strength to rise above the fear, pain and despair. Just One Kiss is a tale of long ago heartache that paves a way for hope in the future. Jake and Hannah bring the heart full circle with an inspiring story of forgiveness and healing. Freethy leaves an imprint on the soul with every story she writes.

Just One Kiss is the fourth book in the Whisper Lake Series. This book shows Hannah and Jake’s story. I love the town of Whisper Lake but this book felt flat. I received an ARC of Just One Kiss by Barbara Freethy as a member of her review team for an honest review. I can truly say that I absolutely loved Just One Kiss, it is an incredible second chance love story. It is the third book in the Whisper Lake series and a Christmas romance. Each book in the series gets better and better, but I think that Just One Kiss is my favorite story in the series so far. Barbara Freethy has once again shown that she is an amazing storyteller. I could not put it down. I loved every page. I really enjoy how the book is told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. Just One Kiss is a second chance at first love story and is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. I love the lighter moments where I find myself smiling and laughing out loud and the bittersweet moments that cause me to sigh, say aww to myself with tears filling my eyes. Just One Kiss is filled with such moments, and with so much emotion. It is filled with all those things that we have come to love and expect in a love story, especially the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. Just One Kiss is the story of Jake McKenna, a sport enthusiast and owner of Whisper Lake’s Adventure Sports and Hannah Stark, an emergency room nurse. Hannah and Jake were high school sweethearts, but Jake stood Hannah up for prom and then cheated on her the same night, publicly humiliating Hannah. Both Hannah and Jake left Whisper Lake after graduation and have only recently returned home. Hannah has done everything to avoid Jake when in his nearby. Jake rescues Hannah on a snowy day when she gets a flat tire when checking on a problem at her family’s rental cabin. When Hannah gets to the cabin, she discovers a four year old boy, Brett on the couch. It turns out Brett is the son of Hannah’s sister, Kelly who left home fifteen years ago. As the spirit of Christmas embraces Hannah and Jake, Hannah lets her walls crumble and lets Jake back into her heart and love. I love how once again, Barbara Freethy incorporates the title of the book in to the story when Hannah tells Jake that it only took “just one kiss” for her to fall in love with him. I love that both Hannah and Jake share secrets with each other, especially Jake, whose secret cost him his relationship with Hannah. I love that they were both so vulnerable and that Hannah changed because of Jake’s rekindled love. I loved that Just One Kiss is a more than just a romance, there are dilemmas that both Hannah and Jake are facing that need to be resolved. I love that there were multiple storylines: trying to locate Kelly, Hannah’s relationship with her mother, Katherine a recovering alcoholic, Jake’s relationship with his father, Davis, but most importantly Hannah and Jake’s story. I love how all the storylines get so beautifully resolved because of the miracles of Christmas. I love all the descriptions of the Whisper Lake setting that Barbara Freethy detailed, it makes me want to visit. Just One Kiss is filled with the poignant and bittersweet moments in the story as well as the plot twists, that I have come to love and expect in Barbara Freethy's stories. I love the cast of characters in Just One Kiss and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Who doesn’t love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? Reading Just One Kiss felt like a family reunion, because the reader was able to catch up with the other characters in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed Just One Kiss, who doesn’t love a second chance at first love story.

I am sorry, this book is torture!! It is so slow paced, but maybe I am just loosing patience with books at the moment. I had to skip to the end because I couldn't take it anymore the back and forth between the F-Lead & M-Lead.......????

Hannah is an ER nurse, with an alcoholic Mother who was sorely neglectful and in denial about her past treatment of her children. Hannah is on her way to her family's rental cabin to fix an issue, along the way she meets her ex because of a flat tire. Said ex Jake is an ex because he cheated and has never provided an acceptable explanation for said cheating. They come to the cabin and discover what is revealed to be her nephew from her older sister who ran away. the following 10 chapters are filled with the search for her sister and Jake trying to "earn" his way back to her heart through Christmas excursions with the nephew. I had to skip to the last 4 chapters because I couldn't take it anymore, the plot just wasn't really going anywhere worthwhile(IMO) I gleaned from reading the last chapters that Hannah & Jake resume their lovers relationship but can't move forward afterwards because she can't trust Jake as he won't let her into that night long ago when he cheated on her. We finally learn the reason, Jake confronts his father b/c Jake caught his father cheating on his mom during a difficult time for the family and goes out and does some other girl. Meanwhile Hannah returns to the cabin and finds Kelly in active labor. Trouble follows Kelly and after the birth of her daughter bad guys gets it and Jake tells Hannah why he really cheated though not his father's secret, though we get that Hannah can figure it out. Words of love are spoken yada yada yada, Cut to the ambulance ride home and we discover an additional truth shocker about the accident that took their father!! And Hannah is so judge-y and blameful she has to "fight off the desire to judge and blame" ( i almost couldn't finish the book right then) Well everyone gets home a happy family reunion and Hannah and Jake at THE END.

OMG there is so much to unpack and I feel like I really can't because I did skip to the end. But I will say this. Jake is an idiot. He must not have loved Hannah in the beginning because he wouldn't have done what he did (again, IMO) I am not saying he didn't love her but not enough or what he thought was love. Hannah is too judgmental. I know her mom & sister let her down but that's allot of anger to store for so long. Another reader was right. This whole family needed therapy and Jake too!!

This is a complete WOW from start to finish!!

I have read just about everything Barbara has written. I will say the sisterhood series is her best but this one is SO Amazingly delightful with the sense of mystery and it makes you feel like your right there at the ending, sharing the drama & suspense! This is an absolute must read.
Here is just a teaser. Hannah lives in Whisper Lake with all the past friends showing up from the others in the series. Hannah a beautiful reconsider nurse had been in love with Jake forever, that is until he broke her heart in a way that Hannah can't forgive him or let go of her anger at him for many years. Jake who left Whisper Lake after their breakup returned two years ago, every time he is in the same place as Hannah, she won't speak and makes a fast get away. Unfortunately, this comes to an end on a blustery snowy night when she is going up the mountain to check on the family cabin that they rent out. When her car gets a flat and to Hannah's fury her ditsy mom did not put the spare back in the trunk. She is stranded to far from the cabin to walk in the cold, blizzard-like
conditions, so when she sees headlights stopping to help she sees that of course it is Jake, the snake. He sees she in a real bind and getting colder by the minute and he offers her a ride with him to the cabin, since she is out of cell range to call a wrecker.....this starts a series of incredible complications, when they get to the cabin to find a cute little blonde boy that is she finds out is four years old and all alone in the toasty warm cabin. He has no idea where his mom went but a packed suitcase with all his clothes in it and an unsigned note. After questioning the little tike they find out his mothers name is Kelly. Hannah's sister's name is Kelly and she has been missing for fifteen years...could this little boy be her sister son?? The rest of the book from there takes you on a suspenseful journey of intrigue, murder, suspense, lost love and the ending will blow you away!
This must read shows again what a great author Barbara Freight continues to be.

Christmas time...a magical season, a time when dreams become reality and when families come together. But Hannah Stark's family is broken. She has spent a lifetime putting others before herself. Since her Father died, her Mother turned to booze to cope, and her older sister ran off, Hannah has raised her younger brother. She even managed to overcome the tragic break up with her high school boyfriend, Jake, in a most humiliating way.
Now years have past and Jake is firmly behind her. Her mother has been sober for four years and Hannah has made a life for herself. She's happy with her job and her friends. There are still some reservations about her mother's sobriety but she's found a way to deal with them: by keeping her mom at arm's length. However, another problem has found its way to town... Jake. So far, Hannah has manager to keep him at a distance. But Jake wants nothing more than to explain his side of the story to Hannah, and maybe find a way to start over.
So when Hannah is called upon to go the family rental to tend to a broken water heater, she thinks nothing of it. But, on the way she gets a flat tire, and Jake just happens along and offers help. It would be foolish to turn him down right? It's cold and snowy and she has to get to the rental. But when she gets there, instead of a broken water heater, she discovers a little boy left all alone. It isn't until she starts to talking to the child that she figures out the truth. This little boy is Kelly's son and her nephew. And Kelly is in trouble. All Hannah really knows is that Kelly warned her NOT to go to the police. But she has to do something, she has to trust someone. She needs to find answers. And there is a little boy who needs his mother.

A perfect Christmas story. As Hannah tries to find her sister and reunite a little child with his mom, she slowly opens her own heart and learns lessons of trust and forgiveness. So appropriate for the holidays. And a wonderful continuation to the Whisper Lake saga.

Jake and Hannah have had a tumultuous relationship. It was all great in high school and then Jake did the unthinkable, he cheated on Hannah. That was the end of their relationship and their friendship. Jake ended up leaving Whisper Lake and Hannah did what she had to do after she went off to college.

Hannah had a rough time, her mom became an alcoholic after Hannah's father was killed in a car accident. The whole family seemed to fall apart. Hannah and Tyler ended up moving to Denver so Hannah could become a nurse and get Tyler away from their mother whom seemed to be heading into a major downward spiral.

Jake left Whisper Lake and found himself, his passion in life, and the know how to start his own business in Whisper Lake. He had hopes that him and Hannah could at least become friends again, but she would just ignore him every time that they hanged out with their friends or she would just leave. However, after a chance encounter and Jake being the right place at the right time, the two of them end up working together to help out Kelly's son, Hannah's nephew. Can this be the start of a friendship or more? Can demons be laid to rest and a true relationship happen after all the years spent apart and with them both growing?

Kelly whom is Hannah's older sister makes her way back into her life, however she does it in the most unconventional way, but she does it out of a mother's love and knows that her son Brett would be safe with Hannah and her family. But is Kelly's trouble too much for Hannah and the rest of the family? Can these troubles be taken care of and can the family finally be able to move on from the past and be together again after 15 years?

I really enjoyed reading about Hannah and Jake's story and how they have grown from their teenage-selves to the respected adults they are now. Can their love be as strong as ever or has it had its chance?

Hannah and Jake were high school sweethearts, but one night when Jake ends up breaking Hannah’s heart, everything between them falls apart.

It’s now twelve years later, and both Hannah and Jake have been on their own adventures, finished their studies, worked hard, and made lives for themselves. Soon they both realize something is missing, which is someone to share their life with. They both remember the passion they once had in high school, but when Jake comes home after 9 years, Hannah manages to ignore him every chance she gets and tension rises.

The plot begins when Hannah is on her way to fix a cabin member’s hot water heater, only on the way she gets a flat. Who’s there to save the day? Jake McKenna, that’s who. Since Hannah has no car to drive, Jake offers to take her to fix the heater, only when they arrive at the house, the only member in it is a four year old boy named Brett.

When Hannah ends up knowing who is in charge of leaving Brett all alone, how will she find who she’s looking for, and who will help her?

Their relationship goes from best friends to lovers to enemies to friends to lovers 😀‼️

𝗥 𝗘 𝗩 𝗜 𝗘 𝗪:
Overall, I really enjoyed this story, but the plot seemed to revolve more around the mystery of where Kelly is and not around Hannah and Jake’s romance. I did not like how quickly Hannah forgave all of Jakes mistakes, he broke her heart, she held a grudge for twelve years and has hated him since, then BAM! she loves him again? 😐 ALSO- almost EVERYBODY IN THIS ENTIRE BOOK is telling Hannah to not get back together with Jake, yet she does!!

I truly loved Hannah’s moms redemption, knowing that after all of her hard times, she was able to sober up and be there for her grandkids and later back for her own children.

anyways, fav couple Tom and Kelly 😻 (i’m joking)

Barbara Freethy never disappoints me

Hannah Stark and Jake McKenna have a painful past. So painful that, when Jake moves back to their hometown 12 years later, it takes all Hannah’s energy to avoid him. After all, they have mutual friends in the delightful small town of Whisper Lake where everyone really does know each other.

Both Hannah and Jake have secrets — from each other and from themselves. Can they open their hearts to a second chance or is it impossible to even be friends. That’s the basic premisd to JUST ONE KISS, with a delightful mystery thrown in for good measure. After all, two people can’t decide if they can be together unless they are thrown together by a sudden crisis.

JUST ONE KISS is classic Freethy. Strong characters who forge their own paths not only with each other but with others in their lives.

I adored Hannah and Jake. I enjoyed watching Hannah grow and shed her attitudes based on her painful memories from childhood and begin to see others through adult eyes. Jake, too, needed to mend some relationships, and realize some painful truths about himself.

Freethy takes along their journey with her exceptional skill, from an opening that pulls us straight in to the action to Christmas ending that is so emotionally satisfying that I can’t wait for the next Whisper Lakes title so I can check back in with Hannah, Jake and their friends.

Although No. 4 in the Whisper Lake series, JUST ONE KISS can easily be read as a stand-alone.

Hannah & Jake were high school sweethearts until Jake made a mistake that broke them up. Years have passed but Hannah has been unable, or unwilling, to forgive Jake for his transgressions. She had a terrible childhood after her father died. There was no one else to rely on but herself. Her mother dealt with her grief by becoming an alcoholic & her sister ran away feeling guilty over her part in her father’s accident. Hannah ended up taking on the responsibility for herself & her younger brother.

Jake knew he screwed up. He broke Hannah’s heart but he didn’t think she’d hold a grudge this long. He really felt she’d forgive him by now. His feelings for her haven’t changed but he can’t find a way past her barriers. When she suddenly needs help, he has a way to spend time with her. Can he get her to open up?

I really enjoyed the touch of mystery in with the romance. It gave Jake a great way to get involved & it lowered Hannah’s defenses. Hannah’s desire for a family came through along with her reluctance to trust anyone again. Jake needed to make peace with his father & his mistakes before he could move forward. This was another wonderful story to read & a great addition to the series.

Whisper.Lake.....JUST ONE KISS..#4...Barbara..Freethy
Hannah an ER nurse, dead tired, and being five days before Christmas in Whisper Lake, full of visitors. Since thirteen has kept the family together, forgiving them for their demands, especially her mother. Eight hours of work and she had to check on a furnace in one of the rental cabins, for her.
A heavy snow, a flat tire, and Jake came by. Finding a young boy alone in the cabin, mother leaving a note. Hannah didn't want help, but needed Jake to take them back to town. Jake, a first crush and first humiliation to forgive him yet for those memories, seemed impossible.
A child Brett, a trusting smile and the innocence of one that is young, before the hurts of people. Excepting his mother left him alone, isolated in a cabin out from town. For for what reason a note saying no calls to police.
A story that tugs on your heart, of the drama in families and as in this story Hannah always stepping in to help and has no family of her own. A story of forgiveness and healing, enjoyable and well done. The 4th in this good series full of memories in Whisper Lake.

Forgiveness is a hard thing to do and if you don't forgive those who have wronged you, it can keep you emotionally in the past and at the time where the hurt happened in your life. This is exactly what happened to many different characters in this story. They each have reasons to hold on to their sadness, hurt, betrayal and many other negative feelings. The best part about this book is the process that the author, Barbara Freethy, takes us on towards healing of these characters family relationships, new found love and hopefully a happily ever after for everyone.

I described that there is a lot of emotional baggage with the characters, but this story has so much more to it. The main two characters, Hanna and Jake, are thrown together again, after many separated years, to help solve the mystery of Hannah's sisters disappearance. Hannah was betrayed by Jake, but she reluctantly needs Jake to help her. The mystery takes on many twists and turns until it is solved. This book has a great mystery element mixed in with a love story that is better late than never. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have--no cliffhanger!

Hannah and Jake have known each other since they were young and dated during high school. Hannah thought they had a forever relationship until Jake cheated on her. As soon as he could leave town he did and she also went away to school. Now they're both back in town working. They have many of the same friends, but Hannah has done her best to avoid him. Until one night when she is going to her family's rental cabin to take care of something and has a flat and Jake comes upon her as he's going to check on an employee who's having a rough time. He stays with her and together they find something that surprises them both and sets a real mystery in motion. As they work together to find information and solve the mystery they are drawn to each other. Jake is determined to win her back and at the same time she finds he's not the same guy that he was way back when. They learn some things about each other that they weren't aware of and they both help the other put family relationships back together. With this story we get a second chance at a HEA and a mystery that keeps us turning pages and guessing. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Being a romantic at heart makes me a sucker for a great second chance romance, add in Christmas time as the background and I’m all in. I didn’t want to put this book down. I was invested and needed to know what was happening. This heartwarming, sweet and tender story tugged at my heart strings and maybe even had me tearing up.

Hannah and Jake were best friends since middle school and then high school sweethearts for a brief time, until Jake ruined it all and broke Hannah’s heart. Fast forward 12 years.... Hannah does everything in her power to avoid Jake and has absolutely no desire to forgive him, until a blown tire brings them together and they end up thrown together due to the discovery of a sweet, innocent 4-year-old boy and mysterious circumstances. While impatiently waiting for the mystery to be unraveled, they form a bond again (that never died).

Jake seems to be a carefree, adventure seeking man but he has been running from a major secret for 12 years. Will he finally confront it so that he gets the girl? Can Hannah let go of her hate towards him and take another chance if it means her happiness?

I adored this book and love the entire series. This is a standalone, but I recommend reading the series for its wonderful characters and beautiful setting.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.

"It is the season for miracles"
I loved this quote from Just One Kiss by Barbara Freethy, while maybe not technically a Christmas book it definitely feels like one. Jake and Hannah fell in love in high school until Jake did the unforgivable and broke her heart. For the past 12 years they have mostly avoided each other but Jake wants to change that and when an adorable 4 year old boy enters their lives Jake sees his chance. Hannah hasn't seen her sister for 15 years but when she leaves her little boy behind for Hannah to take care for she can't turn him away. Jake is determined that she isn't in this alone and thrilled when she reluctantly accepts his help. Hannah gradually starts leaving her hate behind and begins to remember the things that were good between them.
What follows is a beautiful story about the importance of family, love and forgiveness, a little boy's Christmas wish and even a Christmas baby! But the overarching story is about Hannah and Jake's love.
I LOVED this book...I LOVE this series!
So grab a tissue and sit back and enjoy!

Just One Kiss by Barbara Freethy is the 4th book in her Whisper Lake Series. Even though this is the 4th book in this series it can very well be read as a stand-alone. Ms. Freethy has written a wonderful story which drew me right in, making me forget everything else and did not let me go until I turned the last page. I did not want to put this book down once I started it, I read well past my bedtime and was engaged throughout. I loved how the author described everything so vividly I was able to visualize and feel everything that was going on. This is very well written has well developed and likable characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. I felt like I was right there with the characters. This is a very emotional and enjoyable story full of second chances, love, friendship and wonderful characters. I laughed I cried and I felt all the emotions of this book. Just One Kiss is one of those books you read and savor. I can’t wait for the next book in the Whisper Lake Series to come out.

My Review of Just One Kiss by Barbara Freethy. I received an ARC for an honest review

I was so looking forward to returning to Whisper Lake, and I devoured this book in one setting! This book was so good, and the story was captivating! I loved the character of Hannah, she’s tough and knows her own mind...but she also stops herself from moving forward, she holds grudges and is slow to forgive.

Jake messed up with Hannah, and is desperate for a second chance, so when fate throws them together, fate being a flat tire, a missing sister and a wee boy left alone, the two of them work together to solve the mystery in front of them

As with all of Freethys characters, they are so well developed that you become so invested in their story, they are real, not perfect and each with their own flaws! I loved catching up with old friends and I can’t wait for my next visit to this charming town

Congratulations on another wonderful story

OMG !!what a fantastic book that was! This book just surpassed all of other Barbara Freethy novels I be read so far. It was so good!!
Hannah and Jake's story is about forgiving, accepting and letting go of the past. It's a second chance love story between friends to lovers. I loved both of these characters so much, their strong personalities really stood out in this book. This also highlights importance of family. Both Hannah and Jake had differences with their families. Hannah taking responsibility of her younger brother at a very young age, and taking care of her nephew. I was pining for Jake as he continued to pursue Hannah for another chance. Hannah is independent, strong, she take care of others. She was hurt and betrayed by Jake, so she didnt want to give another chance or to forgive and was stuck in the past. So after many years they reconnect. This book is full of emotions, suspense, twists and turns and love!!

This book was a pleasant surprise! I wasn't sure what to expect aside from a holiday romance but got quite a bit more.
This is a small town, second chance / enemies to lovers holiday romance with a dash of mystery. 12 years ago Jake broke Hanna's heart and the whole town of Whisper Lake knew. Now as adults they're both back in their hometown after years away and despite Hanna's best efforts to stay far away from Jake, they're thrown together one night and forced to call a truce.
Both characters have difficult pasts and things they're avoiding. They each have complicated but close knit family dynamics and the small town feel adds to that. They were high school sweethearts but they haven't been fully open with one another. Now as they face an interesting twist they have to decide which way they move forward.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was the holiday romance I was looking for with a bit more to give.
