Riley finally has love within his grasp, but the only way to protect it may be to let it go.

With no more rules standing in their way, Riley Shepard and his angels test the boundaries of their new and unconventional relationship. Jealousy and doubt lie in wait, threatening to ruin the tenuous ties connecting them. But some things are always worth fighting for.

As the forces of Hell conspire against them, their list of allies dwindles, and the question of who to trust becomes an issue of life and death. There is always more to give, and to protect what Riley loves most, he must make an impossible choice. If the price for their lives is breaking their hearts, then Riley will pay it.

There is no love without sacrifice.

***Betrayal is the fourth book in the M/M+ harem/poly romance series, Fire & Brimstone, featuring hurt/comfort, insatiable guardian angels, sizzling encounters, and an unlikely hero who comes into his own. NOTE: Book 4 does end in a cliffhanger, but the series will be HEA, I promise. For trigger warnings, see the author's note.***

❗️❗️Cliffhanger

Once again, not much happens when it comes to the plot. This book was more of a filler, and I need things to get more interesting in the next book or I might give up on this series. It’s not bad, but after 4 books I am expecting more. Now it just feels as if I am wasting my time and this story is not progressing.

When I woke to my alarm, I groaned and buried my face in Noel’s long hair. Jai cursed, and plastic clattered. Noel chuffed and cuddled further into Jai’s arms.
“Your hard-on is digging into my hip,” Jai murmured, his voice thick with sleep.
“And your hand is on my ass,” Noel slurred. “Pot meet kettle.”
Jai chuckled even as Noel started to snore again.

The first 60% of the book or so is Riley, Noel, and Jai learning how to navigate their polyamorous relationship, and Riley and Gideon trying to figure out what their relationship will look like because it’s a very different dynamic than what Riley has with the other two angels. This is a 300 pages book about their cute, but otherwise quite boring everyday life. We see Riley going to school, training, cooking, gardening, and living his “normal” life.

The last 20% or so were much more intense and interesting, I have to give that to the author, she ended the book in a way that makes it almost impossible for me to resist the temptation to read the next one, even though I was not impressed with this fourth book. At least it is very promising for the next book, and hopefully, the plot and politics will take up more room instead of just the daily routine and romantic drama.

As the title implies, there is betrayal in this book, but it didn’t really come as a shock honestly. Not only because of the title but there was some foreshadowing that was just a little too obvious for me to be shocked when it happened. I am pretty sure that there is more to it than just a simple betrayal though, so I am curious to see what details and explanations will be given in the next book.

Also, the author somehow managed to get rid of all the human sidekicks Riley had since the first book, and I do not know how to feel about that. Sure, they were becoming kind of useless in the story since they are not angels and were not involved in whatever was happening with the demons, but seeing as nothing really happened with the demons since the first book because there is no real plot, I feel that the characters were just pushed to the sidelines for no real reason. I liked the idea of Riley staying in touch with regular humans and those characters had the potential to be interesting and good allies to Riley, but after being mostly absent from the second and third books, the author just got rid of them in this fourth book, which I find sad, even though it is kind of logical.

Honestly, I was not sure if I wanted to read the fifth book at first, because this was yet another filler and while it was fast-paced, it was nothing new or relevant. The last stretch of the boo convinced me to give a try to the next book though, because it promises angst and more politics, which is what I’ve been waiting for!

I also need to give a special mention to that one scene that made me cackle like a crazy lady in my living room.

“What’s fisting?” I asked aloud, and Gideon literally started to choke on air.
Uriel’s eyes widened like saucers. “I beg your pardon?”
“Uh… Beau mentioned it once?” I grasped at the first excuse I could find. “He talks about lots of things I don’t understand. I still don’t know what a strap-on is.”
“Oh my God, stop talking!”
“Is this actually happening?” Uriel burst into laughter as Gideon continued to asphyxiate on oxygen—the one thing that would actually fix his breathing issues.
I patted Gideon’s back. “Sorry. Never mind. I’ll just Google it later.”
“No!” Gideon barked hoarsely. “For the love of the Maker, do not Google fisting!”
“O-Okay.”
“This might be the best moment of my life,” Uriel said as he wiped tears of hilarity from his eyes. “Please, continue.”

So this book has taken over as my favourite in this amazing series that follows Riley and his three Guardian Angels. This series must be read in order. I listened to the audiobook and again the narrator does a fantastic job with all the different characters.

I had heard that the last few books of this series were super angsty and I didn’t get that for most of this story. Most of it is just the four of them growing their relationship and figuring out how everything works with the four of them. There were so many parts I was laughing out loud. Especially when Gideon was explaining different sex things to Riley. 😂😂

But the angst definitely comes in near the end which ends on a cliffhanger and I just wanted to bawl for these guys. I can’t believe everything they have to go through and even though I understand all the decisions made it doesn’t make it any easier to take! I’m very excited to start the next audio in the series!

4.5⭐️ honestly, I’m more interested in the plot of this series than the romance. This book focused a lot on the relationship building, which felt a bit like filler to me, but it was sweet and necessary for the progression of the story. I’m living for the action moments and the big reveals—who Riley’s parents are, who betrayed Riley and why, how Riley’s powers will develop and what he’s capable of, how they’re going to stop Lucifer…
Jumping right into the next book.

This is the most hilarious one in the series

There were so many good moments and sexy times as they navigated through their new relationship. It is indeed a slow burn and sometimes I just could not wait anymore for them to make a bold move on Riley. Especially Gideon, I know he has his painful past so his dynamic with Riley was no doubt awkward and sluggish. It is not helping that Gideon is very reserved and way too cautious. He thinks too much and feels so little, nonetheless our baby Riley still craves and sadly bears the consequences of his desires and wants but well I believe they will surpass their insecurities and embrace one another with openness and reverence. Of course, as the story not-so-subtle emphasizes, there is no love without sacrifice. Bad things happend at the end and this book has a cliffhanger. I believe this unfortunate event might be the key to unleash whatever they are struggling with and *freaking* finally know what they crave and yearn for. As the saying goes, absense makes the heart go fonder. You feel more when you lose.

I don't even know how to review this book as I am speechless. This story ended on a cliffhanger and I am still reeling from the events that unfolded. I even took a day off and I am still struggling to get a hold on my feels, not to mention the worry and ache in my heart for what is to come.

So lets start with Riley, I love him and his Guardians. I really adored the depth and heart put into their relationships; nothing comes easy, and these characters have the tough conversations, they have the vulnerable moments, and they grow as a group, deeper and stronger everyday. I couldn't get enough of their relationships. And not say the story is filled with challenging moments, its also artfully balanced with hilarity from both our main characters and the secondary ones. There is a scene where Riley starts blurting out questions about sexual items to Gideon in front of Uriel, and lets just say by the time that chapter ended, I was laughing so hard I tears streaming down my face.

I also loved how Riley strengthened his friendships outside of his angels, both in the mortal and Heavenly realm. His sleep overs with Beau made me smile, actually any time Beau made an appearance (for the most part), I was left smiling. Uriel is like the older sibling/parental figure Riley never had and it gave me all the warm fuzzy feelings. Actually the whole Uriel being a dom thing had me blushing on more than one occasion. And Danny, Bethany, and Sharon all added a layer of normalcy to Riley's otherwise chaotic life.

In terms of the plot, things reach a critical point over the course of this story. And it absolutely broke my heart. Riley is put through so much and I constantly find myself wondering how much more must he give? Not to spoil anything, but there are multiple betrayals in this story, some people just avoiding admitting the truth and others, I hope, aren't exactly what they seem. And it's clear that Lucifer will accept nothing less than possession of Riley; so I just keep reminding myself that an HEA is guaranteed...I just might have to go through H*ll to get there.

Safety info, content warnings and tropes down below.

This one was probably the least angsty yet most emotional/sad so far in the series, at least for me. It made me feel safe and happy with sweet relationship moments, dates, some good spicy times and a surprising amount of hilarious moments -- most of them starring Gideon. Then it completely wrecked me, making me cry like a baby, lol.

Gideon is still my favorite, probably. He is such a gentle sweetheart. Can't wait to continue with book 5. I'm sure plenty more tears are in my future.

Riley worshipped the ground Gideon walked on. He lived and breathed to please the man, and anytime Gideon doted on him, the poor kid would practically swoon. Watching them interact was as nauseatingly sweet as it was hilarious. Not many things could make Gideon blush, yet Riley had a knack for it. The man would blunder about like a human teenager on his first date.

“Shush.” He kissed me again, and I sat up, my hands finding his waist and gripping tightly. He was too big to fit in my lap, but he managed it somehow. I laughed against his mouth. “Stop laughing! I’m trying to seduce you,” he cried in dismay.

“Is it weird that I’m the only one in the room who actually likes boobs?” Jai mused, swallowing a swig from his beer bottle. “Don’t be an ass. Gideon likes boobs too.” Noel flicked Jai’s ear. “Do you?” Jai looked at Gideon. Ears red, Gideon floundered for an answer, his mouth moving wordlessly. Finally, he choked out, “I suppose they’re… aesthetically pleasing.” “Aesthetically pleasing?” Noel’s face scrunched. “Hellfire, hold back on the dirty talk, Gid.”

Gideon didn’t like men—didn’t like me—in that way. I didn’t think he ever would, and that was okay. I wanted him the same way I did Jai and Noel, but I didn’t need that from him, especially if he was unwilling or unable to give it. I just needed him with us, to be a part of us in whatever way he could.

Two minutes later, I knocked on Uriel’s door, opening it when he invited me in. It was a small room, barely enough space for his desk and a small couch. I’d teased him about the size of his office matching his height. He didn’t appreciate the joke the way I did. He’d held me in a headlock until I took it back.

Hadn’t we done enough? Hadn’t we hurt enough? Were some people really fated for suffering?

Where do I even begin? This gave me rollercoaster of emotions, and I could barely keep up. It just got darker and darker each time. It's plot-heavy this time and at the same time our Riley has become braver and stronger, and I'm elated because YES. Progress. PROGRESS! But of course, it's not all rainbows and unicorns. I am physically buzzing in anticipation for the next book. The romance is getting better and better too! Slowburns just make you wanna work for it, huh? Make you wanna grind and strive and struggle for it. And it's worth it.

I will NEVER shut up about Jairus lol. He's just so dreamyyyy. From his smoldering gaze, his dark wings, his crude jokes and his rough hands. I swear I LOVE Noel. Giddy too. But I do play favorites and Jai is sooooo my type lol. I get jealous for him sometimes, when Riley has his intimate moments with his two other angels. I guess this is why I don't read MMM so much because I get secondhand jealousy. But this one somehow works so well for me (mostly). It helps that they felt jealous of each other too. It's realistic.

THis is not like a critical review or anything. I am barely coherent. I just wanna yammer about this book. Sue me lol

You just have to love smart characters doing smart decisions! Like trusting the "bad guys" who proved to be brilliantly, just brilliantly and uniquely evil, to, I don't know, play by the rules? And base his decision with this particular detail in mind? Because of course doing exactly what they wanted and what everyone tried to prevent is soooo smart and logical.

But since I try to... well, sometimes, live by the the rule of "if you can't say anything nice, just shut up" I am actually going to do that now.

I absolutely love this series.
In my wait for this release I was fangirling like a 13year old waiting for a BTS concert. Honestly, if there would have been a midnight sale, like with the Harry Potter books, I would have been first in line. Speaking of Harry Potter...

There were a few similarities to Harry Potter in this book like:

Fortunately I love Harry Potter :)
I think this was more like the first part of the deathly hallows. Essentially it was a camping trip which builds up to the grand finale. Riley isn't on a camping trip. He is home and bathes in the love of his angels. But more or less it is the same thing.
What happened needed to happen to bring the story further.

I also hope in the next book Riley shows again what a badass he really is. I felt like his badassery felt a little short in this one.

Enough critique. I loved the dynamics between all of them. I'm so exicited to see what will happen with Gideon. Also I can't wait for Jai and Noel to come together (It will happen, trust me).
This wasn't my favorite book in this series, but I honestly believe that it needed to be as it is.
Generally I can't wait for the next book. I will continue to fangirl and I will count the days until the next release.

Dayyyyyum!! Be warned it's a cliffhanger, I need the next book immediately.
I am so loving this whole series - the overall story arc, the characters and the relationships developing between them in several criss cross patterns. You grow to love and appreciate them all as we go through the series, which must be read in order as they all follow on from each other.
Betrayal starts off three months after the end of book three with Riley having completed his summer stay in Utopia and is now moving back with Gideon, Jai and Noel. Everyone is excited about it as they now need to establish their relationships and how they stand with each other. There is a Riley and Jai, Riley and Noel, hints of Jai and Noel, and seeds planted for something for Riley and Gideon. I love the differences between what they all share in their own bubbles as well as the true family feel when they come together but especially with Gideon. His hesitancy and innocence is so endearing yet whilst he's unsure of his attraction towards Riley, there's no doubt of his love for the young man. There is heat, sweetness, understanding and fun as they all learn their new roles as Riley goes back to college and his ex guardians start their new roles as Power and principalities.
Riley has really grown into his self, becoming comfortable with what he wants for himself, in his relationships and with his Alter Riley. There is a lot to deal with for him, several revelations, and a huge decision that will impact not just his future but that of his Guardians and everyone in heaven, hell and on earth. I liked getting the whole book from Riley's perspective, it helped to keep things on an even keel as we move through everything he has going on. The exceptions being the prologue and epilogue, the latter being a war cry that demands the release of the next book in the series!
Cannot recommend this book and series enough. I've been hooked from the beginning and am excited to find out where we go next in regards to the plots of the Fallen and the Angels as well as the relationships between our four MC's.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Humorous, charming, sexy, devastating. We got a little bit of everything here.

Riley figuring out how to navigate his relationship with his angels together and separately made for some amusing internal banter.

“Hi. Hey. ’Sup.” I hiked my bag over my shoulder, trying to look cool and collected even as I mentally facepalmed. “’ Sup? Seriously?” Alter Riley groaned. “Sorry, I panicked!” “Can you not act like a psycho? At this rate, Gideon will never want to plow our field.” “Gross! No one’s plowing our anything.”

I’m pleased we got some sexual progression, but I still wanted more. More of them all together specifically, and more Gideon in general. I don’t quite have my finger on the pulse of where the author is taking him. Jai and Noel’s interactions leave my wondering as well. They definitely have jealousy over one another so I’m hoping that is elaborated on soon.

And Jai. He watched. He stood there, eyes never wavering. He burned right along with us. The ashes were beautiful.

Lastly, I could feel the ending coming but I was still pretty upset. Martyrdom almost never goes well, but always pulls at the heartstrings.

What a pity I would never know what his kiss tasted like. But I knew what his love felt like. When the end finally came, I prayed it would be enough.

And poor Bethany. 😭

I’m sure Riley is in for it in the next installment, and that my sweet angels will be bereft; and I’m honestly not ready.

I'm torn on how to rate this one. It ends in a giant cliffhanger, so that's always painful, and the story didn't progress all that much from the last book to the end of this one, but I probably would have been annoyed if it had gone quicker. There was also a point from mid-book to the end where it seemed to turn into a Harry Potter fanfic:

So... the star rating is a dilemma for me as I really didn't like the Harry Potter similarities (unconscious or not), but on the other hand I do still like the series and will definitely read the next book. The writing and proofreading were excellent (it's not often I get an ARC that is completely error-free), and even though there was the tiniest bit of summarization to move the timeline forward, it was well done and not done often enough to pull focus as it would have been if a bigger swath of time had passed in this book. That, in the end, is why I settled on 4 stars. Even though each book ends leaving the reader wanting more (which is painful), I can't imagine that the story would be even half as compelling or well done if the author tried to condense the story into fewer books.

This is the fourth book in the Fire and Brimstone Scroll series and cannot be read as a standalone. It does end on a significant cliffhanger.

STRANA FAMILY BOOK BLOG
Ancora millemila complimenti a Nikole Knigth.

I’m. Well, I’m currently sobbing and staring at a wall. This is a brilliant continuation of a series that literally has everything: action, badass angels, interesting metaphysical analysis of religion and the nature of freedom, a cute innocent narrator discovering his sexuality, and pretty much the slow burn romance of the century. And, well, it’s perfectly heartbreaking too. Never in my life did I expect that I would hysterically sob my way through a sex scene.

I waited up for the release of this book and was not disappointed. Now I’m helpless and cannot catch my breath and how long do I have to wait for Redemption????? Someone tell me please. I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to breathe until I have the next book in my hands.

Heavy emotions!

This book has a lot of beautiful emotional growth the whole way through, a little less action, and some really special moments. The end though, explodes with a lot of heavy, heavy stuff. And it does end on a pretty brutal cliffhanger. I'm worried my confidence that Nikole would be giving us a solid ending where all feels right, was misplaced. I'm seriously wondering how this will play out for everyone, because it seems as though things willl probably get much worse. Here's to hoping, because I need this to be okay.

This action packed, emotionally charged, and totally awesome story broke my heart into a million pieces, ran them through a blender, shredded what was left, then spit them out the other side....just in time for me to scream NO!!! at the one hell of a major cliffhanger. Once again, the author proves her brilliant writing style. However, I have to say that there are more spelling mistakes in this volume in comparison to previous ones. In addition, there were a few passages that might seem exaggerated to some readers. But if you love the series so far and are willing to get involved, the volume is still good.

Just a note: Including a non- binary character is good, but using the wrong pronouns in the narrative two sentences after the introduction is awkward.

So When's the Next Book?

I loved the ending to this book. There was so much well placed angst and tension that I had to read the next part. When Riley was hurt, the Halloween party, and especially Bethenny, my heart raced as much as it ached.

Even though I liked that we got to know more about our reluctant archangel, I wished we got to see more of Riley's human friends to make the impact much more potent (not that I'm saying the impact was weak, but I felt like if we had more details of how Riley, Bethany, Danny, and especially Shannon got along the impact would have been brutal... on second thought...).

While I'm eagerly awaiting the return of the Angel's, I can't lie about wanting to know more about the Fallen and the man connected to Purgatory.

In essence I can't wait until the next book is out so that I can binge it until finished. I have so many questions about Hezekiah's role and what new things Riley is going to learn while away. One thing I do know for certain, the next book will be preordered as soon as possible!

I’ve read this series several times but listening to this audiobook, is hands down a whole new experience.

Riley made me laugh when his curiosity got the better of him. Riley and his Guardians’ relationship has come a long way; growing deeper, more intense and beautiful with each passing day.

The plot continues to thicken and things are getting pretty intense. Riley has given so much already - can he make it through to the end in one piece?
