Straight up...this book deals with the death of a child; and, although it occurs several years before the story begins, there are a few flashbacks to when it actually happened. This is simply a heads-up for those of you who do not feel comfortable reading a romance novel that employs this subject matter.
Lisa Alvarez is getting married again. Her fiance is her boss...a solid, hard-working businessman 22 years her senior. True, she never knew her father; but she is not seeking a father figure in Raymond. He is a good companion, a courteous lover and an overachiever in his business endeavors. Does Lisa love Raymond? She supposes she does in the way one loves a good friend. But love him in the heart-stopping, stomach-fluttering, sex on the kitchen table or up against a wall, wild & passionate sense? No. Never again. Lisa had that long ago...and when it was over, the grief and sorrow and pain was so intense she vowed she would never be that person again. Lisa is glad she is marrying Raymond. They are quite compatible.
Maggie Scott is seriously considering having a nervous breakdown. Her three kids are running her ragged, her house is a total mess and her life has been reduced to nothing more than one pile of dirty laundry after another. Since her husband had died less than a year ago, she thought she was doing pretty good holding it all together. But then she received that letter the other day...addressed to Keith from some woman named Serena who wanted to know why he hadn't called her. Didn't he want to see her again? And suddenly Maggie felt like her world was crumbling around her. She had to get away...have some time to herself...relax...breathe again...and track down this Serena woman to find out how she knew her husband. Maggie would ask Lisa to come stay with the kids for the weekend. As her best friend, Lisa would do this...in fact she owed it to her for not showing up to Keith's funeral. Okay, so Lisa had made it clear she was never coming back to San Diego. After the death of their child, she had divorced Maggie's brother Nick and had made a new life for herself in L.A. But this was a matter of Maggie's life or Maggie's death. She grabbed the phone and headed into her sanctuary, otherwise known as the broom closet...
One True Love was one of those books that I couldn't seem to find the right place to stick the bookmark in, close it up and walk away. Just one more page...just five more minutes...and then it was morning; and through blurry eyes (more from the predictable but satisfying ending and less from exhaustion) I read the epilogue. What a sweet, romantic ending to a story that, overall, wasn't very sweet or romantic. Instead, it was a well-orchestrated blend of three, individual stories with one common theme - surviving the loss of a loved one. Maggie...her husband killed in a freak accident that threw her into the immediate role of both mother and father...never stopped to grieve alone. Lisa...her baby girl dying from SDS at 2 months old...shut everyone she loved out of her life and ran. Nick...losing his daughter, which soon led to the loss of his wife as well...sought comfort through alcohol. Barbara Freethy does an excellent job of fleshing out these characters and giving each one a unique personality. As a reader you share their private thoughts & emotions, understand the personal demons they face; and, ultimately, feel an overwhelming (with just a hint of bittersweet) happiness when everything falls into place.
For the reason previously stated, I won't be recommending this book to anyone in particular. However, although somewhat abstract, I hope that I have conveyed a relatively decent idea of what this story is about. I am pretty sure you will enjoy the book if you choose to read it.
Uplifting Second Chance Romance with Such a Positive Message
A friend recommended me One True Love by Barbara Freethy, and I expected to enjoy it, but I didn't expect an emotional and beautiful gem written in multiple POVs with a secondary romance that was just as engaging as the main couple!
One True Love is about Lisa and Nick, who were married at one time, and now are leading very different lives. They lost a child together and neither has been able to come to terms with that loss fully. They are brought together by circumstance and their love awakens, but the two harbor pain and grief from the events that unraveled their marriage. My heart hurt for the pain this couple endured both in the past and present.
As I mentioned earlier, the reader gets multiple POVs in this book - not only Lisa and Nick's but other characters as well. Additionally, there is a secondary romance which occurs with Nick's sister Maggie. She is a widow and takes a trip to solve the mystery of a mysterious note which she receives that is written to her husband one year after his death. I loved how the author incorporated Maggie's children in the book too.
The dialogue in the book is excellent and heartfelt, and the author does a great job of letting the reader experience grief and a budding resurgence of love between Lisa and Nick. Also, I loved the theme throughout the book that home isn't a physical place but with those that you love. The challenge for Lisa and Nick is to overcome the pain and accept their grief and mistakes in order to move on together.
This uplifting book made me want to hug my loved ones and reaffirmed for me to not take life for granted. I highly recommend readers to experience this poignant and heartfelt second chance romance.
Lisa Alvarez akan segera menikahi Raymond, duda sekaligus boss nya, sebulan lagi. Siapa nyana, seorang sahabat yg sedang depresi akut bisa mengubah jalan rencana hidup Lisa.
Maggie bukan sekedar sahabat karib Lisa, dia juga mantan adik iparnya. Atas desakan minta tolong Maggie, Lisa pulkam dan bertemu kembali dgn mantan suami yg dibencinya, Nick.
Alur cerita buku ini membosankan disebabkan nyaris konfliknya berputar di situ-situ saja, ttg kematian anak semata wayang mereka 8 thn yg lalu, telah merongrong rasa bersalah Lisa, yg merasa dirinya tidak kompeten sbg ibu, menyalahkan Nick krn bercinta di kamar sebelah sehingga tidak menyadari kematian anak mereka. Mirip lingkaran setan yg tdk berkesudahan.
Maggie & Jeremy dgn konyolnya menguntit wanita yg dicurigai menjalin hubungan gelap dgn almarhum suami Maggie.
Ketika mereka make love di kapal Nick, saya merasa mereka spt kucing garong yg menipu Raymond.
I admit...romance is one of my favorite genre. No matter that the plot is predictable, I still love them. They're sometimes a bit too mushy for my taste, but so long as they don't go too far beyond my limit, I still love them. They're easy to read, and best of all, they've either for the tug-of-the-heart or squirm-in-your-seat factor. I love some tugging and squirming.
This novel has actually two parallel love stories. Though it was clearly Lisa's and Nick's primarily, for me it was equally that of Maggie's and Jeremy's. They're related as the characters knew each other, but their respective stories were coursed differently.
Lots of heartwarming themes: romantic love, lost love, family, friendship, children, miracles. Everything's here, nothing more that a hopeless romantic could ask for.
Lisa's ex sister in law called her to come watch her 3 kids for a few days. Maggie really needed a break to refresh and wanted to chase down a woman that wrote her deceased husband Keith a letter. Lisa really had a lot to do with only a few weeks left until she was to get married but felt she had to do this for her. While babysitting the kids her ex husband Nick shows up since one of the kids called and said Lisa needed help. She really would like Nick to just leave but he won't. Once they both get out all the anger and feelings over their daughter's death and the end to their marriage 8yrs ago they both realize there are still strong feelings there for each other. The problem is Lisa is getting married. Will Lisa go ahead and still get married or will her and Nick try to get back together? I had a very hard time putting this book down. I really enjoyed the storyline and thought they mixed well into the whole book. This was a great book and one I'd definitely recommend.
I received an Arc in exchange for an honest review
I tried and tried to like this book, but after reading 56% of the book I just couldn't do it anymore. I didn't like the way any of the characters interacted with each other and I didn't like that there were basically 2 main stories and 1 minor story going on....every time it would get good with one set of characters it would switch to the other story line...AAAAGGGGGHHH Pick one already!!
It's definitely a depature from the Christian romances I tend to read. There wasn't explicit sexual talk, but enough to turn me off and I only think it turned me off because it never seemed to be realistic or believable, more like it was just used as an excuse to put it in the story.
This is the first book by Barbara Freethy that I have read, though this one fell a bit flat for me I will give her another try.
Lisa (h) comes back to San Diego after her best friend and ex sister- in- law calls in a favor. While she's there helping watch her nieces and newphew she hopes to excape with ever having to see her ex husband Nick (H).
Nick, after reciving a frantic phone call from his 13 year old neice saying that Aunt Lisa needed help watching her and her siblings, goes over to see what the hell is going on. Once Lisa opens the door he knows that there is still feelings there between them.... all he has to do is get her to stop running from him, the painfull memories of their daughter that they lost and most of all, herself.
One of the reasons that I only gave this story 3* is because imo, there was way too much going on with other secondary characters and it was a major distraction from Lisa and Nick. There was also a small hint of magic all through the book and that will always make it lose a few stars for me.
This was my first Barbara Freethy book and I found it to be just OK. I am a sucker for reconciliation romances, so I was excited to pick this one up. I think what turned me off was Elisabeth Lisa, the one that was engaged. I just found it weird that she was engaged to someone so boring and older. It turned me off to her character. I also found her to be so cold about her daughter's death that I just couldn't relate. Nick seemed to make all the effort and I liked him much better between the two.
The second romance story with Maggie following a presumably deceased husband around was a bit crazy. I thought Maggie's love interest was unrealistic in how attached he was to her at first sight. I get it's a love story, but I thought it was all a bit over the top. I really don't like when authors pick two plots and they are totally separate. It makes me lose interest in the main thread of the story. So, this one was really drawn out and I never really got into it.
This is a good old sappy romance which guarantees a having nice time.
It involves six people: Nick and Lisa, who divorced eight yeas ago; Raymond (Lisa’s fiancee), Beverly (Raymond’s competitor an adult woman), Maggie (a widow and mother of three children), and Jeremy (a writer that will help Maggie to solve a mystery). Not all of them are equally well-drawn, but the characters are lovable and the plot engaging. There is also a pinc of magic realism (involving a Robin) that I loved.
While I usually dislike the idea of “The One” (I’d like to think we will have more than opportunity), I’m a sucker for second chances novels. I also like that it’s about normal people who face difficult situations and YES, they all find, eventually, their HEA.
I'm really glad I read this book. I liked the characters overall and the story was very touching. I didn't give it the full five stars because of a couple of reasons:
- The main character Lisa was way to conflicted at times. - The possibility that Keith was alive distracted from the main characters. - The hint of magic throughout the book also distracted from the story.
Overall I really enjoyed this. I would recommend it to people if they understand grief and are romantics.
Just when I think Barbara Freethy books can't impress me more than they already have I read One True Love.My name is Suzanne. I live close to the Indianapolis 500.Barbara Freethy has a character named Suzanne in this book and she made a reference to the Indianapolis 500.I keep changing my favorite book ever and they're always a Barbara Freethy book.If you're not reading Barbara Freethy books then what are you waiting for?
The story of this book was good, I liked the characters and the situation that brings the characters together. However, the book was not formatted correctly and I had more than 20 different issues with sentences not matching page to page and feeling like a few sentences were missing. I found this quite frustrating.
Received book free on Kindle. Normally I enjoy romances, but for this one, just could not wait to get done. I plowed through more for Maggie's story than Lisa and Nick's. For some reason, I just could not identify with them. Sure, there was a tradgey in their lives, but does that mean they don't have any sympathy for others, like Maggie.
This was my first read of Freethy's and not something I would normally run to but, it was on the Kindle Free 100 list. So, I figured, what the heck. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, albeit slightly predictable.
free ebook she was married to her best friends brother. they had a daughter who died in her sleep. they both felt guilty and the marriage ended 8 yrs later she is going to marry a older man from her work. she doesnt really love him, they wont have children he hasnt moved on. he makes baby furniture his sisters husband died in a fire but they didnt find the body, just a tooth. he had taken $8000 out of the bank the day before and increased his life insurance. they had 3 children and she was having a breakdown, asked her friend to come baby sit while she had some time alone. despite the job and up coming wedding she went there to help her friend. her friend told her her husband got a letter from some woman she didnt know wondering why he didnt show up she took off to find the woman and question her. she met the womans neighbor and he came along with her to find the neighbor in sf. she thought she saw her husband with the woman and delayed going home even though her friend had to go back to work, she stayed to help and got closer to her x husband. they shared kisses. meanwhile the man who was supposed to marry her was taking around his rival for work, a beautiful but older woman, more his age.

A lot of heart strings very deliberately pulled.
A thoughtful story of second chance and dealing with loss with the death of a baby and the death of a partner.
Do I believe in it? I’m not sure. Two very rapid HEAs. And, really, Lisa had found herself a new life. So she was being heavily pushed in a direction she didn’t want to go.
Plenty of cheating, with Lisa engaged and Maggie questioning the honesty of (dead) Keith.
Overall, fine. But unlikely.
2.5 stars, rounded down. Because I didn’t understand why Silvia and Carmela were even there. And Keith's mysterious death was meh.
Have tissues ready and a lot of them! This was a great book and an emotional roller coaster. At times you're laughing then crying then smiling. So much happens in the story and it goes between 4 main characters, that you can't put the book down because you just have to know. And when you get to a spot that you think you will get answers it changes to a different character-so you have to keep reading to get to the other character so you know what happened and then it happens with the current character your reading g about I liked that you got to see basically 4 different views and 2 stories-Nick/Lisa and Jeremy/Maggie.

"True love", my butt! If it's the real thing, tragedy doesn't pull you apart. Real people I know (sad to say) have gone through what these fake people did, and they stuck together, nobody ran like a coward.
I also don't like the dual stories, one takes away from the other. And the main h was selfish. Yes, she went through something horrible, but that's no excuse to turn your back on family and friends (let alone the man you supposedly love), as if you're the only one who's gone through tragedy. And getting engaged to your much older boss???? HR would have a field day with that one!
Boy I really loved this story. Just enough mystery and magic to make the story so romantic. Lisa had divorced Nick just after they buried their baby daughter Robin. They were both young and did not know how to cope with their loss. This story starts eight years later when Nick’s sister, Maggie, needs Lisa’s help and for the first time in five years, she went back to San Diego. Lisa is faced with three children of Maggie’s that don’t really know her and her ex-husband when she is supposed to be planning her wedding to her boss. This is a great story that you will not want to lay down.
I found this romance a little hard to get into but once I did, I enjoyed it. I received this book for free and voluntarily chose to review. I've given this a 4* rating. This story was woven around two women, who grew up friends and are reconnected in this story. There is a lot of woundedness in these characters and a lot of healing too. There are several twists and turns along the way. A real interesting ending.
A well written book which flows nicely. Lisa and Nick divorced after a tragedy, rebuilding their lives in different ways. Nick’s sister, Maggie, recently widowed with three children calls on Lisa to look after them while she has some time away.
Can these three people, Nick, Lisa and Maggie, make peace with what has happened in their lives?
This is a novel that gives us a few ups and downs coupled with feelings that have not yet been addressed.
This was a very emotional and beautiful story. Lisa, Nick and Maggie’s stories were a joy to read. Lisa and Nick know in themselves that they bel9nged together but we’re both afraid to reAlize it. Maggie’s search for questions to her life bring Nick and Lisa together to realize what is really important in their lives. A fantastic story Barbara and I highly recommend reading this story.
