Former Delta Force operative Dak Harper narrowly escaped death after his team betrayed him. Now, he's out to make sure every single one of them pay.
The men from his team have gone underground, changed their names, and spread out all over the world. But no one can hide forever, especially from Dak Harper.
With the help of his friend and underground gun runner Will Collins, Dak tracks down the first of his targets, locating him in the city of Miami. With the game set and the pieces in play, Dak makes his first move to get revenge on the men who stripped him of everything.
This is book two in the Relic Runner Origin anthology of short stories.
Ernest Dempsey is a huge fan of action/adventure thrillers and science fiction.
He has been creating stories since he was in high school but never published a book until 2010, long after the days of high school were gone.
His action & adventure books come from a lineage similar to Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, Steve Berry, and James Rollins. While his science fiction novels are full of influence from Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, The Matrix movie, and Gladiator directed by Ridley Scott.
He is quickly becoming one of the hottest fiction authors in the book world.
I had received this book/novella from the author as part of an introduction to his world of Dak Harper, Sean Wyatt and the rest of the IAA universe.
This novella continues on from where the last novella left us, that being following the adventures of Dak Harper as he hunts after the former member of his Delta Force team (who had left him for dead following a mission to eliminate a group of religious extremists in Iraq with five crates of ancient antiquities).
Dak, with the assistance of a former teammate (the quartermaster) and his computer skills find the location of one of his other former teammates, Carson, in Miami, FL.
After going to Florida and doing some reconnaissance with the assistance of remembering Carson's predilections, he approaches his bookie and proceeds to trap Carson at the rookie's residence.
As an action filled novella, this story would definitely be a favourite for adrenaline junkies. As such I would give this story a solid four and a quarter stars out of five.
As with all reviews, this is just my five cents worth.
A Dak Harper Thriller Origin Story Book 2 by Ernest Dempsey, You Only Die Once is a short but nonetheless thrilling revenge novella, with the first person narrative and focus on Dak Harper, a Jason Bourne-like ex- military elite fighter, betrayed by his closest comrades while on deployment in Turkey.
Why not grab a copy of You Only Die Once today, to experience a vendetta like no other you'll read about this year - satisfaction is absolutely guaranteed!
While I did enjoy reading this book, I realized that all the books in this series would be about the hero hunting down the remaining men left in his group & with the object of killing them for leaving him in a cave to die. I decided for me, anyway, I did not care to read the remainder of the books in this series.
Another exciting read from an author who knows how to ramp up the excitement!
Have read many of this author's book and always enjoy them but never read this prequel series. Am really grateful to have the opportunity as it answers many questions about Dak and what took him from Delta operative and into the life that followed... Well done, Mr.Dempsey!
I have yet to read a book from Ernie that wasn't 5 stars. He's a great story teller and has you on the edge of your seat more often than not.
I am enjoying finding out the back ground to Dak Harper before I delve into some of the longer books. This series of shorter stories is a great introduction.
I gave this novel a 4 star 🌟 only because I wanted MORE story, I WILL more of Dempsey's stories. He's a good writer and I like his work. Looking forward to reading the next book.
One down, 4 more to go. Perseverance and patience are Dak's strongest traits. These will be very helpful as he continues his search for his brothers at arms who left him for dead so they could become thieves. Great story. Thank you.
Good storyline, fast paced. A good man betrayed by those he trusted. He wants revenge for the betrayal and his lost honor. I liked the story and enjoyed the ending. Im looking forward to reading the rest in the series.
