Trapped, a haunted monster waits to consume new victims. It needs help. It needs a doctor. Unfortunately, it also needs to kill whoever it meets. Thrust into immediate danger, and on the back-foot, it will take all of the Doctor’s ingenuity to triumph.
After numerous delays the final piece of Time Lord Victorious puzzle has finally been released. It was originally intended as a vinyl exclusive for Asda at the end of November before a downloadable version a fortnight later. It was the sensible choice to hold off selling a limited edition release during a pandemic.
In terms of the overarching link to TLV the connections are only slight and I was relieved that they were easy to spot as it's been a fair few months since I'd last enjoyed the other stories in the multiplatform saga.
The two interlinked stories can easily be enjoyed in either order as The Eighth Doctor section is told quite early in the TVL timeline whilst The Tenth Doctor section works as a perfect coda.
Obviously I went for McGann first as he is my Doctor and it felt like it sets the scene better. His Doctor having predominantly appeared mainly in Big Finish audios is a nice gentle introduction for those who are new to this format.
It was also great to hear Tennant involved too as most of that incarnations strands had only featured in comics and books. The main focus of TLV and some nice reflective scenes near the conclusion feels like a more fitting end to this ambitious project.
I was expecting the final part of the Time Lord Victorious mega-arc to be something of a damp squib with this often delayed release, but it's quite the intriguing little storyline, as past and future meet with a little timey-wimey on the side to keep things interesting. While not a deep philosophical piece there is still the nice moment of reflection at the end as 10thy reflects on everything his younger self is about to go through, raising things up just a little bit before the end credits send us off for the end, the final end...
on second listen I found the first half to be the more interesting half of the story as 8thy had much more of a challenge, while the second half was more of a stroll in the park for 10thy but it also served to wrap up the end of the TLV arc from the Doctor's POV quite nicely
As disappointing as this Time Lord Victorious multi-media crossover event has been (apparently only the novels really matter to the story), one can still find a bit of enjoyment in these ancillary bits. Yep, the TLV plot is referenced, but if you know nothing about it, you can still enjoy this as standalone.
Although the story is fairly light.
It's a two-part episode featuring Eight in the first part, and Ten in the second part, with Ten sort of doing clean-up on a dangling thread from the first part. But as I say, it's fairly light, standalone, and maybe only for those who really enjoy hearing McGann or Tennant in their respective roles.
The rest of the cast is fine, too. Burn Gorman is nearly unrecognizable in his role as the baddie, and I never would have guessed that was Arthur Darvill either (not playing Rory). So, a pleasant little episode about an unpleasant event, and the Doctor trying to set things right. Which is pretty standard Who fare.

This was an audiobook split in half, with the first half featuring the 8th Doctor and the second half featuring the 10th Doctor. Being that the 8th Doctor is my favourite, and I really don't like the 10th Doctor, the first half was by far my favourite, but it also felt like the 8th Doctor part was a story in its own right, whereas the 10th Doctors part was more of a clean up for the whole end of the Time Lord Victorious storyline from the Doctor's perspective.
The voice acting was fantastic as per usual for Big Finish, and it was nice to hear the other Whoniverse actors, even if they weren't playing their usual roles. To that point, I did have a laugh that they had actors from Doctor Who, Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures all voice acting on the same audio drama.
I’ll admit, I was pretty lost towards the end (that’s what happens when you’re so excited to see a twofer with your two favorite Doctors that you don’t bother to go through all of Time Lord Victorious), but the performances are so engaging I still had a great time.
Depending on your perspective, this is either the first, the last (or somewhere between these points) of the Time Lord Victorious multi-media crossover event. Don’t expect me to make sense of the order, it’s all a bit of a big ball of timey whimey ... yeah, that kind and got away from me didn’t it.
Echoes of Extinction (Eighth Doctor): Wonderful. Brilliant and Paul McGann is in top form as the Doctor. But then he usually is. To be honest, I’m not even sure how this connects back into the Time Lord Victorious, first, last, somewhere in the middle. It’s all a bit ... wait, I did that bit already. In any case, this was a lot of fun. Now on to the next chapter ....
Echoes of Extinction (Tenth Doctor): Wonderful. Brilliant and David Tennant is in top form as the Doctor. But then he usually is. Wait ... am I repeating myself? Now that I’ve finished this fantastic little duo of short stories I can see how it fits together and how it doesn’t fit together. Fascinating little experiment and it works beautifully. It both starts and ends the Time Lord Victorious, so just brilliant.
The whole thing is beautifully put together and I don’t even have the vinyl edition. So I can’t even imagine how cool THAT experience would be. This release also includes some behind-the-scenes interviews as a bonus feature.
The Timelord Victorious is a multi-media event that I, including a few people, were really disappointed with how it turned out in the end. It had some really solid content but the overarching series felt very halfbaked, making for ultimately an unsatisfying series. I listened to most of the audios and read the two novels, but I've been meaning to listen to Echoes of Extinction for a while now, and finally, here I am!
The Eighth Doctor finds himself in the middle of a situation where a species has just been wiped out by a sinister monster and he must find a way to rescue the last from of its species from a creature hellbent on finding peace. Later The Tenth Doctor arrives alongside a crew of scavenging crew to find out what the creature is and capture it.
Alfie Shaw has written an absolutely thrilling two-part adventure that despite its length manages to be a really tragic story with some solid characterization and plenty of bloodshed. I love how this story has 8 before he embarks on his adventures in this saga, whilst the 10th Doctor has just come out of events having been saved by both of his 8 and 9th incarnations. His words to 8 whilst he can't hear him are heartbreaking, knowing what's soon to happen to 8 after he comes out of the dark times and into The Time War.
Overall: A fantastic adventure that's definitely by far the best story the saga had to offer and I honestly think Big Finish did a brilliant job of using the vinyl format to their advantage. 9/10
Two cracking stories, ingeniously intertwined. This was quite a short drama (maybe this was due to the confines of vinyl?) but Eight's stories sometimes have a tendency to drag on so maybe this shortness was a blessing. Like I say the two halves were well linked together and it leaves the door open for a PROPER Ten/Eight team up some time down the line (come on Big Finish I am counting on you!)
The final piece of the Time Lord Victorious crossover event (except for the Time Fracture Interactive Cinema thing), Echoes of Extinction was released as a vinyl record with a download version from Big Finish who produced the release. This story is made up of two linked episodes, one with the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and one with the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant). It a fairly self-contained story about the Doctor encountering a sentient psychic weapon that has caused the extinction of a species. It's sad in its own way, especially the first half. The Tenth Doctor provides the links to Time Lord Victorious, though the story is nearly entirely stand-alone. For the Eighth Doctor, this serves as the start of his TLV journey. For the Tenth Doctor, it's at the end. This story effectively provides a bookend for the whole event. It's not the best Doctor Who story that ever was, but it's enjoyable and worth the wait (it was originally scheduled for the end of November but Covid ended up pushing the release first to February and then mid-April).
Echoes of Extinction (Eight): 7/10 Verdict: Recommended
Love the characters and general plot of this one. The setting and atmosphere is really solid on this, gives me beauty and the beast vibes, except the talking candelabra is replaced with a robot butler. On that butler, what is with these stories and just throwing in the most unexpectedly entertaining characters. The unravelling mystery is fun to go through, and the ending was pretty funny. Really recommend this one.
Echoes of Extinction (Ten): 6/10 Verdict: Optional
10 was great in this, but I didn't connect with this one too much. I wasn't a big fan of the dead world as a setting, I didn't really like the side characters and the only character to return from the previous story was the trapped monster, who doesn't really work all that well outside of the first story. There was a nice moment at the end where 10 reflects on 8, I did appreciate that.
This was a fun audio featuring the 8th and the 10th Doctor (in two separate but connected adventures). I am not sure how this connects to any of the other Time Lord Victorious stories, but taken by itself, it is certainly entertaining for one hour. Just do not expect anything deep or philosophical. Overall, I have been quite disappointed by most of the offerings we got from this event, however, this audio certainly is one of the better ones. Well written, good pacing, very well performed. And you would never guess that this was done remotely during lockdown. Recommended.
It's finally over, and I rather enjoyed it. Sure, the stories were hit and miss and it was a bit expensive but I had my fun with it, and I think this was a fair end. The large story-experiment ends with a another big experiment. Echoes of Extinction is maybe the most interesting story of the whole event, both beginning and ending everything featuring two of the primary Doctors, and finally David Tennant. Personally, the Eighth Doctor's side was better than the Tenth's, but both were very fun.
A fun if somewhat simplistic narrative. It packs an impressive amount of content into what is essentially two half an hour stories, and the robot antagonist, who has been driven mad by psychic voices in his mind, calling for him to kill people, is a pretty fascinating character.
Paul McGann and David Tennant give two of their strongest audio performances here also, as they perfectly evoke their respective incarnations. It's just a shame they couldn't find a way for them to meet up, and experience the audio's plots together.
I was kinda disappointed when I discovered right before getting this that Eight and Ten do not meet each other in this story. They become involved with the same event, but with only Ten being aware of Eight's involvement. His lament at the end about what Eight will have to go through is well acted. But overall, two quick and somewhat underwhelming stories.
I decided to listen to all of Echoes of Extinction now as opposed to coming back to the second part later, but that proved to be a mistake. This is both prologue and epilogue in the multimedia event. It was also much shorter than I was expecting... which is disappointing because I was really enjoying it, despite its flaws.
I definitely felt like I was missing something, not having been able to get hold of (yet) most of the rest of the stories in this arc. That's on me, I guess. This was on the good side of fine. I wish the ending had been more impactful. (Again, that could be on me.)
A solid story involving a prisoner, a villainous creature and a robot. The Doctor puzzles out a mystery, and I loved the thrill of solving it with him. I often wondered who was captor and who was captive, but it turned out the answer in a twist was all the more complicated. The first half of this two-part story was a rather interesting; a short-lived mystery that kept me guessing. It left me wanting more.
Ten
The tenth Doctor’s story was a mess. The Doctor meets some pretty one-dimensional characters, whose character traits don’t extend beyond their names. Furthermore, this audio drama had a dull monster that posed an empty threat. I could not see a purpose to the story.
Altogether
With Echoes of Extinction, I got two completely polarised stories. One was brilliant, the other was rubbish. I will emphasise that I really enjoyed the mystery in the better story.
