Melissa Mayntz has seen hundreds of bird species, witnessed astonishing seasonal migrations, and attracted dozens of species to her yard. She brings more than 35 years of birding experience to her readers not only in books, but also through writing for magazines, blogs, newspapers, and newsletters.
Melissa enjoys common birds just as much as rarities, delights in everyday sightings alongside unusual twitches, and has fun visiting captive birds at local zoos and aviaries. She lives in Florida and is transforming her suburban yard into a wildlife-friendly habitat. She is also studying to become a certified Florida Master Naturalist and Land Steward.
On her own bookshelves, Melissa keeps a wide range of fiction and nonfiction, from thriller and science fiction to fantasy, Amish fiction, post apocalyptic tales, teen fiction, classic children's books, and of course, anything bird-related.
The scientific background was not always of the highest quality, but the illustrations were beautiful and I still enjoyed this precious little book on migration.
Aesthetically pleasing book with some good main points about bird migration. It doesn't dig deep into the issues but it's a good starting-point for people who are interested in birds. It adds some examples of bird migrations that keep interesting. And the illustrations are lovely.
A charming and beautifully illustrated book for the layperson to learn some facts about bird migration. I really enjoyed the profiles of different birds and the migration routes they take. Older children would also enjoy this book. I particularly was pleased to see the action steps to help our feathered friends: provide fresh water, adopt bird-friendly landscaping, feed birds nutritiously, routinely clean feeders & baths, turn off outside lights at night, minimize or eliminate pesticide use in your yard, keep cats indoors, clean up local habitats by picking up trash & removing invasive plants, make windows visible, and introduce others to the joy of knowing, aiding, & watching birds. I will add: plant an oak tree.
Just enough detail to learn a thing or two without getting drug into scientific detail. An easy read. Illustrations are beautiful. Worth adding to your birding book collection.
