This is a very short Novella by Sophi Soames. It surprised me because it was so different from any of her other books that I e read and I’ve read a good few now.

Two young boys meet on a bridge in the snow. Elliot notices the other boy, Archie, sitting on the edge and thinks he is preparing to jump. Casually, he starts talking to him to distract him until he can get closer and hold onto him. When he’s close, Archie just says, “would you like some ice cream”.

A friendship is formed between these two young men, others of whom are very broken. Archie has some illness where he just collapses and goes off mentally until he’s suddenly all OK again. Élliot takes care of him until he’s back to normal. He did this for years.

Thing is Elliot has just as much going on as Archie. He’s had a horrible home life but he’s managed to get by and now has a good job. He’s was living with Archie, taking care of him when he needed, Elliott fell in love with Archie, it was unrequited. Archie had a string of girlfriends, he knew Elliott had fallen for him so he made a decision.

Many months later Elliot is struggling, he has addictions to drugs and alcohol, he is about to be thrown out of his apartment due to non payment of rent.

He doesn’t care anymore, he just wants everything to stop in his life, his life to stop.

With this story being so short, it wasn’t enough for me to become deeply invested with either Elliot or Archie, perhaps a bit more with Elliot because Archie didn’t seem to care much for him, despite Elliot’s looking after him when he was off mentally.

However Sophia Soames doesn’t leave her readers feeling so down and out as these two characters so I felt a lot happier at the end.

This is a story about mental illness and addiction and two people who try to overcome that. It was hard reading to begin with as Eliot is in a bad way but it all works out

This story was very very intense and beautifully written.
Two boys, Archie and Elliott, meet on a bridge, one of them seems to be ready to jump, the other one starts talking to distract him. They end up eating chocolate and becoming best friends.

Their relationship is all but easy, though: Archie is bipolar and alternate calm period to severe episodes. During this hard times, Elliott moves with him, helps him make it through them but every time, when Archie feels better again, he kicks him out going back to his numerous girl conquests.
Ellliot is gay, he comes from a toxic family where both parents were alcoholic and after years of being there for Archie without him loving him back, he just gives up on everything.
Elliott becomes an addict, he uses alcohol and any kind of drugs to numb himself and forget the pain of his unrequited love.

When Elliott reaches his breaking point, Archie is there, determined to help him heal and to fix both of them, even if Elliott doesn't trust him not to break his heart again.

There's so much pain in this story and I felt very sorry for Elliott, his desperation is so well written, it's like I could feel all his sorrow. Elliott's feelings and emotions are worth all the stars of my rating.

There's a HEA, but I didn't feel like Archie was really ready to completely commit himself to Elliott, his reasons and his love declarations didn't totally convince me.
