Why do I want to be a vampire? Because it means freedom.

But I'm free now, aren't I? I don't go to school. I drift around all night. . .

Wait a sec. Why do I want to be a vampire?

The previous volume of Call of the Night didn't impress me, one or two chapters aside, but I enjoyed this one a lot. The question of Ko maybe being turned by a male vamp is brought up (I have to say, gender fluidity is approached a bit differently here than I'm accustomed to), and shrugged off not because Ko is revolted by the idea, but because he's already decided on the vampire he wants to turn him.

Ko's being aromantic--though not ever described with that term, I think that's the spectrum he falls under--is causing some problems. He's attached to Nazuna as a friend, but falling in love, at least in the conventional way, is something that might not be possible for him. And the clock is ticking.

Ko's friend Mahiru is growing attached to Kiku, who may have been introduced in the pack of women vamps a volume or two ago, but I had no real recollection of her. The last page of the volume shows the reader that her intentions may not be as benevolent or romantic as they seem to Mahiru.

I like how the friendship between Ko, Akira, and Mahiru has stayed solid through a period of separation, and with absolutely no romantic or sexual tension between any of them that I can parse.

Ko’s friend Mahiru goes to Anko, the detective who killed a starving vampire, to rat out Ko’s activities. Mahiru, however, is already deeper in this mess than he realizes. And while Nazuna and Ko are learning to be honest, Ko’s gotten a whole other kind of offer from Hakka…

Dream and reality once again slam into one another this volume as Ko starts to learn that being a vampire might not be all it’s cracked up to be. Even with such minor downsides as ‘need to drink blood to live’, there’s a lot more to consider here than he first thought.

As he says, the night is freedom to Ko - it’s where he escapes from the world he had to inhabit before and feels most comfortable. But will that same feeling hold true when he is fully a creature of the night? It’s once more the idea of what you like becoming your whole life to the point that you might resent it.

Surprisingly, it’s Nazuna who has the answer to that question, fully admitting that a lot of her good mood has been borne from showing off for Ko and she’s actually been bored for decades on end. Of course, that leaves a door open that two might be better entertained than one, based on that notion…

And that delightfully complicated relationship is the heart and soul of this book. Ko doesn’t get love and Nazuna, big thank you to the book for pointing this out since I like a story with some awareness, acts like a locker room conversation as a defence to try and keep anybody from getting closer.

Except it isn’t working and watching them end up drawn together, at times despite themselves, has been so satisfying. The visit to Ko’s bedroom is absolutely hilarious - Nazuna is in peak form here - and the ending of that section is quite the thing. And it just keeps topping itself - if anything, Ko is more emotionally mature and he brings that out in Nazuna.

And the surrounding material is so good. Despite her eyebrow raising proclivities towards younger “men”, Anko is a villain, but only from one perspective. From another it’s quite obvious how she sees her work as important and, simultaneously, how much of a threat it is to the vampire community. Sometimes you need a moustache twirler of a villain, but this sort of story about what your humanity means at the end of it all is better served with a little nuance.

Ko does a lot of soul searching, but his encounter with Hakka, another vampire, is something else. Hakka’s lifestyle is a whole thing and Ko gets an offer wrapped up in all sorts of warning bells, to say nothing of the telegraphed but wonderfully done reveal that trades in being horribly shocked for a kind of acceptance and decency that I would never have expected here. This might be the best part of the book.

We get a little more plot development on Mahiru as well, who is well-meaning with regards to Ko, but is also kind of an idiot who’s playing around with things he doesn’t understand and his lack of experience and savvy leaves him in a real lurch by the time the story wraps up.

The way the book juggles all these plot lines and still manages to be sweet, creepy, fun., silly, romantic, and thoughtful at various times is something else. It is one of the most consistent books I’m reading and it is the best shonen series in my pile right now, hands down (Spy x Family is super close though).

5 stars - to me, this is a perfect manga. I really don’t have a bad thing to say about it - okay, maybe not every romantic pairing should have massive age gaps - and it might not be the most philosophical thing ever, but it’s damn good entertainment.

This was my favorite volume so far, the character development was great! Ko and Nazuna have finally made progress in their relationship!
Haka's interactions with both Ko and Nazuna were great! Haka is a great character, him and his "pets" haha.
Then there's the pesky detective, oh the drama.

3½ stars. Why round down? Well, so far the series as a whole hasn't really grabbed me. It isn't bad, just nothing there that has kept me glued to it and anxious to read the next volume. The story does seem to be improving a bit at a time, but then every time it does that it also pulls back, almost like the author is hesitant to commit to the storyline and so hedges it with a twist or a new thread.

Verdict -- I'm going to read more, at least what our library has, but I'm not deeply feeling the call of the night.

This series becomes more compelling with each volume. What seemed like a rom com about a human and a vampire is quickly becoming more than that. Things are moving are a really good pace and the plot twists and changes are really keeping things fresh. It still is not very dark for a vampire story but that's ok as we have plenty of those already.

« Kou-Kun, Being a Vampire is pretty boring. Sorry, I lied to You. »
« Why did you only show me the funs parts of it?
Because I wanted that way, I guess. »
Could it be that you are missing the emotion of Love?
"Will you live as an human? Or will you turn into a vampire and get killed by me?"
"Even like this, the night is fun !"
(Même comme ça, la nuit est Fun!)
"She won't be able to talk properly for a while... It was the price for your safety."
(...)
"Shut up !! I'm meeting her no matter what !!"
"Damn, I can't get enough of this"
I had always felt bored until I met you Nazuna-Chan.
(Je me suis toujours ennuyé jusqu'à notre rencontre ,Nazuna-Chan!!)
Ça commence à Sentir le Grand Amour !! ;- )
Et cela devient vraiment mignon !

Night owls, rejoice!

As Ko's nightly adventures with the vampire Nazuna continues, he learns more not only about his friend, but about the vampire race and their customs. However, when a private investigator learns of Ko's escapades, she tries to dissuade him of hanging around with vampires, and even notifies the police of a runaway kid to really cramp his fun! He begins to question if he truly wants to become a vampire for the rest of his undead life, and if vampires are actually trustworthy.

This book has caused me to want a vampire friend. Even when serious moments happen, you feel the intensity of the situation, the excitement of it, but the overall laid-back atmosphere of the series dulls its edges, so it's not bad to read right before bed. (Speaking from experience.)

Volume 4 and 5 have really put more of a plot in the story, which I appreciate. Before it felt like the stories were connected, but it was mostly one-shots strung together with a vague overarching motive. Now, however, we're getting into more vampire lore and meaty bits of the story, and I find the vampire lore particularly interesting.

If you want a fun, laid-back, urban supernatural read, definitely give the series a shot!

Yet another old woman comes onto middle-school Ko and then gets embarrassingly defensive when he’s not requiting. I’m sick of the detective from the leap. It is interesting we talk to the cross-dressing vamp and the concept that vamps don’t know much about themselves the same way humans aren’t born knowing about life either. It’s not like they have special scholars or doctors or news anchors, they have to stay secretive. I also like that one keeps humans as live-in maids. I will say I’m tired of every character wearing the same outfit like a cartoon. This is already a yr production with often repeated scenes and poses, so it comes across lazy for things to be this visually static minus fight scenes that are glided over or I can’t tell what’s going on. We finally get one and it’s plain and ill-fitting. Getting bored with the chosen side characters by the end.

Things are suddenly becoming very dangerous for Ko, and also now his childhood friend, Mahiru.

So, the female quorum of vampires have decided that if Nazuna doesn't turn Ko into one of them, they will kill him, and possibly her, as well. Some VERY interesting details are revealed about Haku, and it turns out the cute gal Mahiru has been having drinks with every night after his shift has a set of... well, that would be telling, wouldn't it? Also, Akira, Ko, female childhood friend, she supports Ko's desire to become a vampire, even after the terrifying encounter at the school. She even promises to feed Ko once he's turned, as long as he doesn't turn her. Another intriguing volume of this hot new series!

Kotoyama does a fantastic job of integrating the more personal ideas into the larger plot he seems to be going for. The thematics no longer seem at odds with the vampire community, and actively complement each other. In a way, this would likely be a volume I’d lend to someone to show where the manga is actually going - away from the chilled out ecchi toward a more thorough exploration of youth, permanent adolescence, and true maturity (or failures to achieve it).

Now this took a very interesting turn. After last volume's events, Kou has some doubts about being turned into vampires. After a lot of talking, both Kou and Nazuna make their decisions, and their relationship evolves into the next level.

Meanwhile, Kou and Akira meet Mahiru's "love interest".

It's really impressive how the story is always evolving here, without much filler content. This may be one of the best paced manga I've ever read, and it really helps that the plot is really good.

A pleasant revisit of the events of the concluding episodes of Season 1 of the anime (still visually underwhelming if you watched the anime first). Detective Anko is a character that one will either like or dislike. The stuff with Kiku and Mahiru was definitely not in the anime, but with Season 2 on the way, they might just put it in there. Looking forward to reading Vol. 6 because it's outside the anime's current coverage.

I'm really enjoying this series. The drama and romance is nice. Along with the fact you can't trust everyone and everyone is not what they seem. I highly suggest if you like Vampires in both the romantic and horror way.

Ugh I knew Mahiru was being played!!! I actually like Mahiru...

I honestly hope Nazuna will show up to possibly fight off Kiku. Or Ko will have to step up and fight to help his friend. Please don't let Mahiru be played this way...
