They said she was past her prime, fit only for the scrapyard. But after four long years the small destroyer had more than proved her worth. Now, in the September of 1944, three months after D-Day, HMS Brackendale prepares to slip her moorings and take passage for hostile waters. And although the Allied Armies are gaining ground across enemy occupied territory, elsewhere the Nazi war machine is still far from beaten. For Lieutenant-Commander Richard Thorburn, and his entire Ship’s Company, the war at sea rages on. As they return to battle, Thorburn can only promise an uncertain and perilous future.
As a former US Navy officer serving aboard a destroyer in the late 1970s and as a WWII history aficionado, I really enjoyed reading this series. The review headline says it all. As a pastor and committed Christian, I was especially pleased with the absence of gratuitous sexuality and coarse language. Certainly, the books needed neither. Thank you, Graham Parry, for your excellent reads. On par with--no, BETTER THAN--Reeman's classics of the genre.
The series of 4 books under the overarching title of "The Waves of War" is beautifully written and gives the reading an insight of what the brave men in the Royal Navy went through in World War 11. His description of what all members of the Navy went through, for humble sailors to Wrens to Rear Admirals make engaging reading. The only sad part of having read all 4 books is that I have nothing to read.
The final book in the series returns to the level of the first two after the disappointing third one. Plenty of naval action- especially well done and lengthy climatic engagement. Nice ending also, somewhat out of character for this genre. All in all, a worthwhile read and good ending to the series.
Very interesting book, held my attention from beginning to end. The author did a realistic job of portraying the characters in this book. I won't reveal the ending but it was one that I found different and did enjoy, it provided a proper ending to the book. Very good job by the author
This, the final part of four, was a great way to finish the series, a good story in its own right it follows Thorburn to the conclusion of his career afloat. Nice way to round off what has been an enjoyable four book read
I've thoroughly enjoyed this entire series of the war time exploits of a fictional crew on a Hunt class destroyer of the Royal Navy in WW2. Wonderful characters, great action and riveting stories. I highly recommend this entire series.
The final flourish for four exceptional books all well written with plenty of action, The story of one small destroyer from launching to ???? (read the series)Well done Graham Parry.
Action packed naval fighting with great descriptions. Totally fitting as an end to the series featuring this boat and crew. Couldn’t put it down as war wound down.
