曙光編 Kichiza is like the hansel and gretal kid in his family only except during the times he’s kicked out, he learns to read, write and use an abacus with a monk instead of being preyed on by a witch. And then he gets taken back in again once the breadwinner gets sick...but after some time he’s kicked off to another place to become an apprentice- in Dojima.
Set during the 1720s in Japan, rice collected as tax became the underlying currency of the country. Rice brokers and moneychangers flocked to Dojima, thus spuring the development of the Dojima Rice Exchange. Right off the bat, the story shifts from the simple setting of a coming of age story to a story about economics. The author is competent in writing complex characters especially in the case of Kichiza. Quite obviously though, there is room for Kichiza to grow as a person and as a future rice broker, and the first novel serves pretty much as exposition on dojima and the steeping stone for more plot. There were some slow parts where some trading details were a slog to read through, but the author builds momentum when necessary and had a consistent pace. There’s a cliffhanger ending too goddammit.
