My Rating: ★★

Book Description:
Devan Stowe is a woman on a quest. She has only one thing on her mind when she teams up with Kent Crosby and his associates—putting an end to her father’s child trafficking business. Her determination takes her on a journey to discover her true strength and… the one man she was destined to love. In his arms, she’ll learn the meaning of trust, honor, and courage. Old friends and new will come together to help Devan unlock an amazing gift that will free her from her past and open up a future full of magic, faeries and more things than she ever imagined possible.

My Thoughts:
I seem to be in the minority when it comes to my review of this book...and that is okay...I respect that we all have different tastes, likes, and dislikes when it comes to PNR. Now, with that said, I will first state that my PNR book choices do not typically include witches. I stick with my vamps and weres so my view of Witch Way Bends may be slightly skewed because of my personal bias........but only slightly. I try not to give negative reviews; but, when selecting books I often wish that readers would elaborate on why they didn't care for a story and a star rating does not adequately do that.

My first issue with the story started at the very beginning which seems to have begun with a couple of chapters missing. We are introduced to the story in the middle of a scene...a rather intense one too. The reader was just dropped right into the middle of it. So, from the very beginning, I'm was trying to figure out what the heck was going on because there seemed to be too much going on for the beginning of a story. For me, it only went progressively downhill at that point. Devan and Kent were bickering with each other from page one and then at 15% on my Kindle (oh yeah, I checked)...they start going at it like horny teenagers...Really?!?!? Devan and Kent both seem too immature to carry off the roles for which they were slated. The "I like you but I'm going to ignore you so you don't know I like you" and the the tongue sticking out and whininess grated on my nerves. Oftentimes, it felt as if I was reading a YA and I have very little tolerance for the angst that is included in most YA's.........and there was a lot angst between Devin and Kent. To me, they did not seem at all suited as a couple. Sadly, I didn't care what happened to them one way or another.

Additionally, the story did not feel well developed. People were plopped in and occurrences happened with very little rhyme or reason. So, as a reader, I had to stop and go back a couple of times to see if I had missed a page because the randomness of things just threw me...a lot.

And the whole "mother" reveal......really?!?! And then Devan ...really?!?!? That scene just didn't add to the story at all because it didn't explain anything. I know...it seems harsh because Ms. Hardin tried to bring some cohesion to the story with that revelation but, unfortunately, cohesion was not to be found.

My final issue with the story was how it ended...........not concluded...........just ended. Devan and Kent were in the middle of a conversation and then the next page on my Kindle was an explanation of the Knights. So again, I flipped back to see if I had missed a page...flipped forward again...and nope, still the same explanation of the Knights. Really?!?!? Ending a story in the middle of the thought as a cliffhanger? Not good...not good at all. Unfortunately, I was not particularly happy with this book. There were too many unresolved issues and oddities to make it enjoyable for me; however, with a few explanations and story tightening this book could have been stellar for me.

Despite my opinion about the book, I do wish Ms. Hardin the best in her writing career.

I am usually a fan of this genre, but this book has far too many flaws for me to appreciate it. To start with, there are misused words which is a huge pet peeve for me, and the female main character's name spelling changes from Devan to Devon and back.

The story as a whole is disjointed and inadequately explained. I actually read the first third of the book twice, just to make sure that I hadn't missed something.

The characters themselves were presented as being older, yet they acted and reacted like teenagers and had the emotional depth of a teaspoon. The emotional and sexual interactions seemed misplaced and left me cold, at best. And Devan's imaginary friend's verbal groping was just creepy.

The premise of the story had potential, but the telling fell flat.

Ooo boy. I got this book for free on Amazon and read it as part of a book challenge. If it hadn't been for the Challenge, I would have put down this book and not finished it. I know that there are several people here on GR that loved and raved about it, and that's great, but this just wasn't the book for me.

The book begins in what feels like mid-chapter, or even 3 or 4 chapters in, in the middle of what seems to be an important scene. But we have no idea who anyone is, or what's going on. Other books have started this way, but they quickly provide explanations and details to get the reader caught up to what's really going on. This book didn't. The explanations come too late for me and they never fully explain what's happening. Or who everyone really is. The main characters seemed to be much younger in maturity levels than they should be. I kept picturing Devan (or Devon as it was also in the book) as a teenaged girl, not a 30 year old woman. There are parts of the book that seem so disjointed, like the author wrote them separately and pieced them together later. Like when And then the book ends. Just cuts off very abruptly. I know that this is supposed to be one book in a series, but still. It just ....stops. Which only left me feeling more disjointed.

I didn't feel any kind of connection to the characters. I wasn't emotionally invested in what happened to them. Characters were introduced that seemed to be important but never explained or given more than two or three sentences worth of attention here and there. I liked the premise of the book, I just didn't care for the book itself.

Would I recommend this book to a friend? Sadly no.

This story featured a solid plot and combined it with excellent characters. At times your uncertain who is friend or foe, but this is done on purpose in the beginning. There is plenty of steamy romance, vampires, witches, magic and secret organizations on both side. This story is action packed, but still has enough paranormal and romantic tones to keep you pulled in.

Will Devan be able to accept who she really is? Is she crazy or is Roon real? Can Langston teach and guide her before it's too late? Does Kent finally give in to his desire? You'll have to read it!

Overall this is a great story that mixes modern times with older lore. If you enjoy urban fantasy or paranormal romance, you will love this book! If you're looking to get into either genres this might be an excellent entry book too. I look forward to reading more stories out of the imagination of author Olivia Hardin.

I'm reading this paranormal/fantasy series backwards, as I read Bitten Shame first, the second one. That happens to me sometimes, but it made absolutely no difference in my enjoyment of this book.

I love Olivia Hardin's talent for making her characters emote in such away that I am drawn in to their lives and am able to bond with them. I got lost in Devan and Kent's journey to right the wrongs of their past, to forge ahead despite the obstacles and to take the biggest leap of faith: to trust themselves and each other.

I love a good romance, but I need a solid story to carry me away, and this book gave me the gift of both in one package. Thank you, Olivia, for another great escape to your magical world.

I find this book like a movie you are bored to watch but you still watch it 'till the end. There was too much randomness in it. The idea isn't bad at all but the conversations, the actions were too immature. There were gapes in the novel, details that I felt were just thrown here and there. And other details were missing which created a lack of coherence and it annoyed me.

I really couldnt picture Dev and Kent like two adults. The novel only felt right when I imagined them like two 17 years old kids. They are insecure, especially Dev. She annoyed me with her nervous habits. I know that it can be hard to stop biting lip etc but she does it way too much for a thirty five years old woman.

Plus side: The characters are very interesting, the plot line moves steadily and the descriptions of magic are very powerful.
Minus: The beginning! I almost put the book down because it had such a confusing intro without telling you the least of what you are dealing with.
The relationship between Dev and her beau was unbelievably cheesy even for a romance.
Unimaginative bodylanguage: I got to the point of almost deleting the whole thing if someone cocked their head or bit their lip again!

The actual story line of Devan finding out she was a witch and helping defeat a group of bad vamps was pretty good. But the writting left a bit to be desired. The story seemed to start mid story and the lack of internal dialog hindered the understanding of what was going on. It made places in the story just not make sense. A little more explanation in the story could have made it earn more stars.

Right now, I don't have a desire to read the next book.

I am not even really sure where to begin. There was so much I liked about this book. While I am going to try really hard not to give any spoilers that will impact your enjoyment of this story, I can not guarantee that I will not inadvertently over share. I apologize in advance, if I do. This is the first book in a trilogy about a woman who discovers she is a witch, as she is helping to bring down an evil organization. I know this sounds like many witch story arcs, but this story is anything, but typical. It incorporates familiar lore with new lore, making for very interesting characters and plot twists.

I'll tell you what I liked about it:

* Devan is a character I could easily relate to and care about. She is strong, yet vulnerable. She cares about others and often puts their needs before her own, but is never a door mat. While she is struggling with a horrid past, she uses it not as a weakness, but as the strength she needs to move forward and make things right.

* This book has witches, vampires, a faery-witch, a shaman, dhampirs, and a sheoque.

*I love that the characters are in their mid-thirties (or older - hundreds of years old ;0)). So many of books in this genre have young adult aged characters and I loved having characters closer to my age.

* You finish the story feeling like the story is complete, yet wanting more. There is no "I can not believe the author ended this here and now I have to wait months/a year to find out the end of the story" angst.

*Neither the love story nor the mystery/adventure overshadowed the other. It is a nice blend making this a good book for people who love romance as well as those loving the suspense of a good vs evil conflict.

*The bending in this book (this may be spoilerish) is the bending of time and the author somehow avoided most all of the things that usually irk me about this sort of thing. I am an uber geek about time distortions of any kind, so this made me happy.

*Laugh if you will, but this book gave me a brilliant recipe idea I can not wait to try and a fun desserty sandwich to make at home. The recipe they used was basically a grilled fluffernutter (so yummy). My brilliant (possibly brilliant, possibly yuck, but I am thinking optimistically)is a nutella/fluff sandwich grilled. If you try it before I get to the store for nutella, please let me know how it is.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next two books in this series. I am thinking it will have more Vamps (since it is bite) and I do love vamps. I think I know what shift will be about, but I will wait until number two gets out so I do not look foolish by jumping to conclusions ;). I will say, for the record, I do not believe it will be were related. Those of you who know me, probably realize I can not wait to find out and I will probably pester the author about my idea within minutes of posting this hehehe.

This is not a YA book and I would recommend it for people 18 and older. The violence is not too dark, but there are scenes of adult fun not geared towards a younger audience.

I received this as an arc, so I can not comment on the formatting or proof reading of the final product. I use a kindle and the formatting seemed really strong. There were some editing errors, but they were not distracting to me (the nerd) and may have been fixed before the final product was released.

Olivia Hardin’s writing style reminds me a bit of Jacquelyn Frank’s in that a passage might focus on one character’s point of view, but we could still shift slightly to know what others are thinking or feeling. The tone of the story is also reminiscent of JF by having fairly demure love scenes and a big focus on the characters, story, and world itself rather than the individual events that transpire, such as every little thing during a fight scene.

As for the story, it grips you from the beginning by throwing you directly into the middle of a mission that Devan, Kent, and crew are on. It adds mystery by being vague and not telling you anything about what’s going on. My only problem with this was the fact that it stayed that way for the first few chapters before slowly beginning to give you some insight into what’s going on, and it take quite a while before revealing the larger, overall conflict in the big picture. This also made the validity of some of their plans come into question, because without knowing the truth, you can’t understand how a certain strategy could ever be viable.

Moving on to the characters, I like Devan and Kent, was suspicious of Roon at first, but ultimately I think Langston (aka Andre – read to find out why, you’ll love the reference!) was my favorite. The connection and chemistry between the characters was very believable and often made for some funny moments. Let’s face it, no one is truly comfortable with someone, even your best friend, knowing what you’ve been up to for…hours upon hours *wink*.

My favorite part of the whole thing though was the world. It was complex, it includes different species, and the potential for so much more. The possibilities of what to expect are truly endless in both the plot and the magic.

Mysterious, exciting, and mesmerizing, Witch Way Bends will take you on a magical journey where everything is possible and you should be ready for anything. Don’t miss this great start to a series with so much potential!

Today's review is on Witch Way Bends, Book 1 of the Bend-Bite-Shift Trilogy by Olivia Hardin.

This book grabs you from the very beginning with our heroine Devan Stowe contemplating weather or not to join in on the "mission". The mission to thwart her fathers business of selling children. To succeed she has teamed up with Kent Crosby and his men.

Unknown to her, Kent and his people are not what they seem. They are a mixed team of supernaturals. Langston is a Shaman, and the only person in the group that Kent trusts completely. He himself is a Witch with the ability to alter time. Nicky is a Dhampir, and she finds out that she is a mix of Fae and Witch.

While dealing with this new knowledge of the supernatural community, she also learns that her father wasn't selling children for sex, he was selling the children because they were Witches. And those buying the children? Well they are Vampires that gain power when feeding from them. Now the "Org" knows what she is, and one vamp in particular wants her all to himself.

With the help of her BFF Jill from college; who is now a vamp herself, and the teachings of her mentor Langston, she will learn some well needed fighting skills. And with the love of her soul mate Kent, she finds the strength and confidence she needs for the biggest battle of her life.

The series is off to a good start. Though I did find a few errors, all in all I enjoyed reading Witch Way Bends. Now I have another series to add to my ever growing list of books to read, and if you know me, you know that that is something in and of itself.

I got this book as a kindle freebie on Amazon. It sat on my shelf for a while until one day I came across it and decided to finally pick it up. Yeah, so I am glad I did.

*Kent* *sigh* You've gotta appreciate a sexy guy in any book. To be a fly on the wall in many scenes of this book, I would love to be. I liked his character and his part of the story that unfolded as the book continued.

I was a little sad that Devan jumped so headfirst into everything that was thrown at her. She was just too accepting of all the life altering changes that went on. Devan was adaptable yes, but also a little suicidal in my opinion.

The plot to the book was fast paced and enjoyable. I never felt like the story lagged at any point. I read this book in a day. The storyline was fresh and I loved the inclusion of all the different types of magical creatures. There were fairies, vampires, witches and bad guys selling people. What more could you want in your characters?

This was a great adult paranormal read. I would recommend it to all lovers of this genre. Because it's made with awesome sauce, I give it four glittery stars:)

I was very skeptical in the beginning of this story because it feels like you start in the middle of a story. It works though because you learn a bit more towards the end that pulls it all together. Devan, who believes she is an ordinary woman, is working with a group of men set out to destroy a group called the Org. Devan has personal ties to this group because her father is one of them. Kent, Nicky, and Langston all have gifts that help support their cause. Devan soon learns that she is no ordinary human, she is a special witch part fae, one that has never been heard of before. Devan is the key to bring the human world and the fae world together. Devin will need help from her friends to get answers on who she really is but also to take down a master vamp that wants her blood. This story has witches, vampires, and the fae in it. So if you like the paranormal, you get a bunch. This story is unique and I haven't read anything like it before which is refreshing.

Kent Crosby’s team took on Devan Stowe because she has information which will help stop her father’s child trafficking ring. What Devan doesn’t realize is that she has more potential than she ever realized. She has a great gift which she will need to learn to use quickly to save herself and her newfound friends. Can she bring down her father’s network, gain mastery of her gift, and find the love of her life?

WITCH WAY BENDS drops you in the middle of the action and shakes you up. The story has adult scenes, violence, magic, and mystery. This is the first book in the Bend-Bite-Shift Trilogy and it starts off with a bang. With strong characters, interesting plot, and compelling magical lore, WITCH WAY BENDS is a unique story. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I found it fascinating. Give it a try!

Devan is a very complex character and I love how she grows into her powers through the pages of this book. Her interaction with Langston and Kent are wonderful. Different Twist with Plenty of Magic and Action

This is a well told story of awakening to one's powers and relationships with others. Dev starts the book knowing very little about herself and having an invalid perception of almost everything in her life.

The author provides great world building and character development. The plot twists are interesting and believable within the overall world that is created.

I had trouble putting the book down at night so I could get some sleep. I highly recommend this start of the series. I hope the following books are as good.

Devan is determined to fix things once she discovers that those she loves have been victimizing children. She will have to decide who she can trust in her mission to save them.

I enjoyed the book. It is a good start to the series. As it is a start, there is more development needed. There is a good mix of action and romance and it keeps it moving at a good pace.

A strange start to a strange witches story....

The story starts off differently, but us full if fun and charismatic characters. Who take you along in their perilous journey. Just when you've become invested the ride is over, way too fast. A quick spun tale of sugar and ice that melts too quickly. It's luvly.

what a great read…

A really great read with interesting characters and a somewhat strange storyline that just kept you reading to see where it was going…
And to see what happened Ed next…
Although some things were kind of expected, there was so much more that wasn’t….
I really enjoyed this book and NEED to find out where the story leads Devan and Kent….
