Gabriel Wainwright and Honey Jones both have kept their relationship a secret from their families. Gabriel is a ballet dancer and teacher whose family assumed that he is gay because now at the age of twenty six, he’s never bought a girl home to meet the family. Gabriel knows that his father who is the Attorney General of North Carolina would never accept Honey, a Black woman as his son’s choice for a mate. Therefore, Gabriel has no problem letting his family believe that he is gay.
Honey Jones comes from a single parent household whose mother Sugar is a ghetto fabulous diva who doesn’t mince words. She’s used men all her life to get what she needed in order to survive and raise her daughter. Honey loves her mother but doesn’t want to tell her about Gabriel, therefore she has her believing that she’s dating a broke man just out of rehab.
Both Gabriel and Honey would rather have their parents believe the ‘Acceptable Lies’ they’ve weaved together rather than the truth. However, once their relationship is discovered, they have no choice but to face their families and deal with the drama that quickly ensues
I really enjoyed this book. It is the story of Gabe and Honey, both who are not being truthful with their families about the people they love. But it’s deeper than that. Everybody has secrets. And slowly they bubble to the surface, testing relationships and creating rifts. I thought I knew what to expect, until I didn’t. This story was full of surprises.
Although the plot and back stories in this book were great, there were some inconsistencies in the story line. Was Gabriel 25 about to be 26, or was he 26 turning 27? Had Sugar been to Las Vegas before or not? I liked Sugar as a survivor and strong Black woman who was vulnerable to the man for her. I liked Honey who stood up when it was necessary and let Gabriel be the man, and that he chased her because he was so infatuated with her. Although his mom was a sweetheart, his dad and sister were jerks and hypocrites. Nice read.
Story of going after what you want despite the obstacles. Honey knew her mom would push her to be with Gabriel as he has money but she loved him for him and didn't want a dime. Gabriel knew it would be an uphill battle on telling his family as his dad has a history with the KKK and thought his son was gay. Looks are deceiving in this story of twists and turns but shows family always pulls through at the end for each other. Daddy Wainwright even learns a thing or two about himself and eventually learns to let his kids love who they want to love. You want a story showing that true love does prevail thru all things this is a read for you.
I really liked the story but the only thing I didn't really like was that I felt like the story to shift too much towards Honey's mother instead of staying consistent about Honey and Gabriel. It's cool to have smaller stories within the major plot with the minor characters but it should not focus more on them rather than the main ones. I felt like the drama in the main characters ended too quick just to focus on Sugar and all of these either wanting her or going after her. I didn't the whole thing with his dad and her mom hooking up and him becoming obsessed with her. I thought that was unnecessary but of than that this was a really good story.
One of the things I liked about this book was that it was a long read! I always like to feel that I got my monies worth, and I definitely did in purchasing this book! I loved the relationship between Gabriel and Honey, and between all of the secondary characters! I think another book is in the making regarding the cousin, at least I hope he get what's coming to him! Overall, a great read and I was certainly not disappointed I purchased it! Looking forward to the next book!
Acceptable Lies is a good and sensual romance that earned a rating of four stars. Gabriel Wainwright fell In love with Honey Jones the first time he saw her. Pursuing her he had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get her to love and acceptance of his love and a life with him. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to everyone who enjoys reading good romance novels.
I rate this a 3.5 out of 5. I didn't expect a juicy soap opera from this book. The story pivots from the main couple Gabriel and Honey, to some unexpected hook-ups and relationships with other family members and characters. I enjoyed it for the most part, but Gabriel got on my nerves with proving how "all man" he is to Honey. Plus, his infatuation sounded too much like fetishism towards Honey so he's far from being my favorite book boyfriend. I can get into romance novels with alpha/borderline toxic boyfriends, but Gabriel wasn't written well enough to convey that trait in a likeable manner. Overall, I found this book to be engaging and I found myself rooting for Honey's mother, Sugar, in the end.
I loved this book especially the mother of Honey. I loved the storyline and plot. I was not happy with part of the ending that seemed like it was a cliffhanger. But other than that I could not put this book down until I was finished. Is there a sequel?
I loved the book. I was pissed at first to learn that some prejudices still remained, but as time changes so do people. It’s not about color, prestige, etc., it’s about love respect and honor. Loves has no color. Thanks for the great read
