I may be an immortal magician, but have I finally met my match?
I’m both university instructor Merry Lytton and immortal magician Merlin. After an adjustment period, I’ve finally reconciled my elemental and human sides. But Xenia, the earth elemental I failed to defeat, wants more than a quiet human life. She is determined to bring her elemental allies to Earth, and the exodus creates chaos that threatens to demolish the city.
I have magic powers, but she has more.
I’m racing against an enemy that grows more powerful every day. Will my best be enough when faced with an army of elementals bent on unleashing their destructive magic?
Emma Shelford feels that life is only complete with healthy doses of magic, history, and science. Since these aren't often found in the same place, she created her own worlds where they happily coexist. If you catch her in person, she will eagerly discuss Lord of the Rings ad nauseam, why the ancient Sumerians are so cool, and the important role of phytoplankton in the ocean.
Emma is the author of the Nautilus Legends (a marine biologist discovers that mythical sea creatures are real), the Musings of Merlin Series (Merlin is immortal, forever young, and living in the modern day), and the Breenan Series (a young woman follows a mysterious stranger into an enchanting Otherworld).
I'm getting kind of meh about this series. I took a break from it, thinking I might enjoy it more when I came back to it, but not so much. It's too busy now with too many new characters being brought in, and they all have powers, that kind of overshadow Merlin/Merry. It's just gotten too over the top.
The magic is expanded to include elementals as well. We are left set for more confrontations. In the meantime everyone is pairing up.
I managed to stop last night just one chapter from the end. It is so easy to end up binge reading this author. The action flows so I want to find out what's next. The writing style is easy read.
Well, once again, as I finished this one I bought the next one.
The Successor, now called Xenia, is bringing minion allies from the spirit world and linking them to ex-Potestas. Merlin and his friends find themselves running in circles trying to stop and discover Xenia’s plan. The stress and newfound knowledge of their pasts are taking their toll on their relationships. Fave scenes: Minnie & Shannon, saving the kayaker, the interrogation, and the barrier lauvan.
I started out really loving this series, and this concept. And I find it difficult to not finish a series.
However, by this point, book 6, some of the concept is getting a bit over the top. I have a pretty good suspension of disbelief, and love urban fantasy, but I feel like after roughly book 4, this started to get a bit......off the rails.
