I have been known to say, 'business would be so much easier if it didn't involve people'. I also know people are its greatest asset.

This book has given me fantastic tools to bring out the best in myself and others. I've marked the pages with the practical tips and comparisons, to regularly check I'm on track.

I'm not the only one who liked this book! Zoe's book People Stuff won the Australian Business Book Awards (ABBA) book of the year 2020. What I liked most about it was the emphasis on compassion, introspection and empathy when understanding and relating to others - if you can't change the problem, then you'll have to change to accommodate a solution. Zoe weaves some excellent leadership strategies based on that premise. You'll enjoy the author telling her story with characteristic laconic wit and insight - beautifully amplified in the audio version.

Filled with wise insights, penetrating (and useful) questions, and a brilliant set of archetypes, People Stuff made me reconsider what leadership is, and how to do it well. I would highly recommend you partake of Zoe’s practical wisdom, as it will help you be a better version of the leader you are.

This book gave me a lot to think about and reflect on in my. own communication and leadership style. How I perceive my style isn't always how I outwardly behave so this is something that gives me something to work on.

The book takes a great approach of 'Archetype' styles of how we naturally operate in different ways being the Elder, Guardian, Pioneer, Diplomat or Warrior and Elder. Each of these use different communication styles but are driven from good intent. Each of these has a flip side (like the Dark Side of the force for Star Wars fans) and become the Fanatic, Gambler, Trickster, Bully and Tyrant when intent turns bad.

Being able to use our perspective to help understand that of others we can ensure we operate at our best as well as bringing out the best in others.

A short, easy read but not without depth.

In many ways this could be a companion book to my all time favourite leadership book, Liz Wiseman's Multipliers. Some of the themes are similar though the content is different and both stand on their own.

Zoë Routh has written a gem.

People Stuff is full of smart stuff! I haven't read a personal development book that has educated me, like this did, in so long. I was a senior manager myself for 20 years and I'd never even considered the concepts that Zoe beautifully describes in this book. The piece on perspective especially, was a real eye-opener. If you're interested in advancing your leadership skills, I highly recommend this book. There's a reason it won Book of the Year!

Written by Canberra-based leadership expert, strategist, futurist, and podcaster Zoë Routh. This book was first published in mid-2020, and the edition I read was reprinted in January 2023. The content is most relevant to executive management as well as middle to senior managers, in my opinion. It focuses on interactions with corporate colleagues, management of people, and personal development as a leader. The writing contains plenty of nuance and sophistication, and the material is advanced.

“The greatest tragedy for any human being is going through their entire lives believing the only perspective that matters is their own.” Doug Baldwin

I found the format and writing style to be a little unpolished. However, the areas covered are highly insightful and relevant to leading/navigating people issues…

This book will help you to understand your own strengths and weaknesses, in addition to reinforcing a foundational understanding of psychology, hormones, leader archetypes, disruptive behaviours, and organisational change. The cases and situations in the book are relevant to managers/executives across many types of organisations (private, government, and non-profit).

“The huge problems we deal with every day are actually really small. We’re so focused on what bothers us that we don’t even try to see our lives from a clearer perspective.” Susane Colasanti

I’m certainly pleased to have read this book, and look forward to understanding more about Zoë’s approaches and philosophy.
