If you can guess my name I'll free you, dear child.
Rumpelstiltskin was born a tormented, magically blessed soul with an affinity for death. Searching the lands for a way to free himself from the curse upon him, he soon finds a life away from the haunted memories of his past. Believing he is finally safe and pledging to leave the darkness behind, he lives in harmony with the humans.
But the blessing has a time limit.
After a betrayal that leaves him shattered and clinging to the evil within him once again, the cursed creature fights for the one thing he has always been denied: Power. Raging namelessly throughout the nearby villages and towns, he leaves a path of destruction and terror.
We know of the golden straw, the stolen first born, and the lost name. Now venture to the beginning of what created the villain Rumpelstiltskin.
A great background story about Rumplestiltskin. You get more of an insight into him as a person instead of the fairytale bad guy character. The ups and downs in his life completely endear you to him and you genuinely wish that his life would change and he gets a HEA ending. I loved reading it and you cant help but really like Rumple. A really good read
I never imagined the story of Rumplestiltskin told this way. Fisher did a phenomenal job with this retelling of the old fairytale, putting her own unique twists on it. When thinking about the character of Rumplestiltskin you automatically put him into the villain slot. He tricks people and takes their first born child, but what this story does is gives you the why, the background story of how it got to that point. I think my favorite part about books with "villains" as the main character is that you end up sympathizing with them and understanding the reason how they got to the point of a possible no return. Rumpel's story is a sad one and not one that I was expecting. He didn't choose this life for himself. He doesn't enjoy killing innocents and relying on the dark powers inside himself. He wants what anyone wants--to love and be loved, to lead a normal life where he is treated as an equal instead of dirt underneath someone's shoe. You can't fault him for that. Did he do a few things along the way that were questionable? Yes, but in my opinion he more than made up for it. But secrets always come out when you least expect them to to ruin everything, and it certainly doesn't help when people refuse to listen to you explain your side of the story. A lot of things fall apart when people can't look past their anger or hurt to see what is really happening. The ending of this story was surprising for me. I was really rooting for Rumpel to get the life he wanted and deserved, but we all know how his story ends up…"If you can guess my name I’ll free you, sweet child. Three tries and a promise, that is what I can offer you." I look forward to seeing how his story continues in the next installment. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some good to come to him again.
Name of Gold by K. Fisher is the seventh book in the Not so Evil series. Every book in this series is written by a different author. They are all about different fairytale character and about their backstory. This one is about Rumblestilstkin, and it's a fantastic twisted story of his life.
This book was very well written and the plot was amazing. Loved how the author told us the story. The plot was fast-moving and intriguing.
I loved seeing backstory to this character. I think we don't get to see Rumblestilskin often, and we forget him a little bit, but he is one of my favourite villains.
It was a little bit sad to see all the bad things that happened to him in this story, and I kept hoping he would get his happy ending. This story will make you love him, at least a little bit.
I will definitely read more from this author and keep reading this series about our villains. I'm excited to see who's next.
I received a free ARC copy of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions are my own.
What a phenomenal twisted story about Rumpelstiltskin! The story is intense, dark and gritty and kept me enthralled right to the very end. It is an emotional rollercoaster ride that will make you think twice about evil characters.
This is not the Rumpelstiltskin story we grew up with, this one is more of the back story about him and his life. It’s twisted just like he is. But this story will either make you love him or continue to despise him. Either way his story will pull at your heartstrings and make you think about whether someone is born evil or their situation and circumstances make them that way.
Brilliantly written with lots of twists and turns. Definitely an intriguing story that will get its hooks into you and never let go.
This is the first book that I've read by K. Fisher but I know it wont be my last. This was a really great retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. The old fairy tales make him out to be a monster but this book is about his past and why he is the way that he is. Why does he ask for someone's first born child? Why does he make deals with people? Why is he the way that he is? This book answers all these questions and more. I truly enjoy when an author writes an origin story that shines the villian in a new light and K. Fisher succeeded. I got some Once Upon a Time vibes since both made Rumpelstiltskin out to be misunderstood but this one has steamy scenes. I cant wait for her next book.

An excellent and insightful story into the life of Rumpelstiltskin. As a child this was my favorite bed time story... weird I know... but this story really played into the background of my beloved childhood character. I felt happiness, sadness and frustration for our main character Rumple throughout all of this story and truly loved every minute of it! This story was intriguing, fast moving and well written with plenty of dramatics. If you love Rumple as much as I do this lends to a very believable story that will make you love and understand him even more!
Fantastic read. This is an interesting take on the famous story of Rumplestiltskin. This book pulled at my heartstrings, even though Rumple was inheritantly evil, you just really wanted him to get his happily ever after. Each time something bad happened Rumple was able to pull himself out and go on in life and that seems to be the moral of this story... pick yourself up and keep going. This was Brilliantly written and I really hope there is going to be more to this story.
An origin tale of probably the best known villain of any fairytale, Rumpelstiltskin! An unwanted, unloved child, bullied by his town and made to feel inferior, Rumpel is a very sad character. The worst though is that he finally has a chance to have a happy life with a loving wife and children, and then loses it all. No wonder he got so bitter and angry. Looking forward to part 2.
