Marygene Brown Mystery #3

Southern Sass and a Battered Bride

Rate this book
At a murder mystery-themed wedding reception on Georgia's picturesque Peach Cove Island, the bride is doing an awfully good job playing dead...

Marygene Brown always figured she'd marry her childhood sweetheart, Alex Myers, not cater his wedding. But the Peach Diner could use the exposure. Most of the island is showing up--although more for the role-playing murder game at the reception than for the widely loathed bridezilla, Lucy Carmichael. Marygene may have to smile through the festivities, but Mama doesn't have to hold her peace--especially since only Marygene can hear her mother's ghost. Mama says she sees an aura of darkness around the wedding.

So when Marygene finds Lucy lying beside the wedding cake, buried in batter, with no pulse, it looks like Mama called it. This is no game. And when the bride's body simply vanishes, it's up to Marygene and her best friend Betsy (cousin to the groom and no fan of the bride) to solve a real-life mystery--with a little help from Mama's sassy spirit...

Really 4 and a half stars. Catering the wedding of your ex to a bridezilla probably isn't normal, but Marygene Brown tried to rise above her feelings. The cake was gorgeous and the food scrumptious and ready to be served. One small glitch was when the bride found dead..and then the body missing. Then Marygene's own life is in jeopardy. Luckily she has special help from the spirit of her mother in protecting and guiding her. Anyway the characters are so interesting and the portrayal of small town Southern life on the money. Fantastic series. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

SOUTHERN SASS AND A BATTERED BRIDE, the third book in the Marygene Brown Mystery series by Kate Young, grabbed my attention from the very first and captivated me until the last page was read. The quirky, loveable characters pulled me in and the twisty-turvey plot made this book a “just one more chapter” read through the night story. Protagonist Marygene, is as southern as they come. Despite her longtime sweetheart marrying her detested nemesis, Marygene and her sister agree to cater the wedding after being asked and do so with more grace than what seemed possible. When the bridezilla is found murdered, just after the ceremony, Marygene and her best friend/cousin, Betsy, become prime suspects. To make the scenario even more intriguing is Marygene’s ghostly mama, who shows up to lend support and an occasional clue in solving the crime. I’ve enjoyed watching the growth of the characters over the course of this series, and that includes Marygene’s Mama’s ghost. The creative and quirky twists on the characters adds to the overall entertainment.

The plot flowed at a quick pace which kept me turning pages. With action galore and snippets of humor to lighten the scenes, Ms. Young weaves in clues to keep the reader guessing. While I had my suspicions about the culprit, I wasn’t quite sure and I waffled back and forth as I was sucked in by misdirection. The heart pounding reveal contained another unexpected twist and has me waiting impatiently for the next book in this Southern Sass cozy series!

Marygene and her sister own the Peach Diner and whip up multitudes of mouthwatering dishes and desserts. With Marygene’s father experiencing some health issues, she’s determined to bake up healthier treats so he doesn’t feel deprived. I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the author’s recipes at the back of the book, which incorporate some of her healthier desserts.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Alex Myers is getting married but not to his childhood sweetheart Marygene Brown. No, he is marrying Lucy Carmichael and no one is really happy about it. Marygene has consented to cater the event because it is good business, especially because most of the island is attending. They aren’t really coming to support the nuptials, they are coming to take part in the murder mystery reception. Marygene is surprised the bridezilla has consented to be the victim but when she sees the woman on the ground covered in batter she realizes the woman will do anything to be the center of attention.

Looking closely Marygene thinks the woman is doing an excellent job, she really looks dead. OMG! She is dead! Her mama’s ghost had warned her to be careful because there is an aura of darkness around the wedding. Well, she was right and things get even eerier when Lucy’s body disappears. Was she really dead or was it all just an act? Who would have taken a dead body? and how did they do it without being seen? Marygene knows she has to find out because she and her best friend Betsy are high up on the suspect list. She just hopes her mother will be able to see something Marygene is missing because this is no longer a game, it’s murder and other lives are on the line.

Kate Young has created such strong characters with a fantastic family dynamic. Marygene has grown so much since this series began. She is Southern through and through always trying to see the best in everyone even when they are clearly at their worse. She will bend over backward to help, again when people don’t deserve it. This time we saw the worse of Alex and it really shakes Marygene to her core but she remains open to help him even when others have backed away. Betsy and her Aunt Vi are really hurt by his words and actions but they are still able to bring plenty of funny to this story. I just love Marygene’s mother. Her ghostly presence is always interesting. She is still learning about what she can and can’t do but she always shows up when Marygene needs her most. A tragic event within the story shows that even a ghost can grow and evolve. Marygene’s siblings also play a large role in the story. I became invested in these characters early in this series and they continue to warm my heart and surprise me too. This family is close and that is what drives this series.

The story starts out of the gate fast with so much going on. This author excels at blending real-life happenings with the murder mystery. Marygene is pulled in several directions it seems all at the same time. A complicated mystery unfolds with several twists and exciting moments. Marygene takes a wild ride literally this time and it had me holding my breath imagining what could have been and that was just the first time it happened. The pages were flying as each clue dropped and my theories took flight. I did have someone pretty well pinned to the top of my suspect list but there were twists that really surprised me and I was pretty shocked when all was revealed.

As I have said before, the books in this series are so much more than cozy mysteries. Kate Young gives her readers a story full of Southern charm and sass and characters that are realistic and true. The dialogues are cleverly written and the humor is spot-on. Southern Sass and a Battered Bride is a very entertaining story. I definitely need more Marygene, Betsy, and Aunt Vi in my life. I hope to return to Peach Cove Island soon.

This is my first five-star cozy mystery review of 2021, which for me is rare. As a reviewer, my five-star reviews are not all that frequent because it takes something really special to warrant that review. For me, Southern Sass and a Battered Bride is that something special. This is a fun series and I've enjoyed the first two books but this third book just exceeded all of my expectations. Ms. Young has created this fun, quirky, warm, loving, outspoken, outlandish, tight-knit group of characters that just speaks to me. They are full of wit and humor but are flawed and complex, with more layers for the reader to uncover. I love that Marygene is getting stronger as she heals from the abuse in her past. Her family and friends are her rock, so when she and Betsy are being framed for the murder of Alex's wife, Marygene goes into action to try and help solve the mystery.

The mystery and the plot are complex with a lot of different layers. This was a fast read that kept me turning the pages because I wanted to know who killed the bride. Ms. Young weaves plenty of clues throughout the story, laying down plenty of bread crumbs that will lead her readers in the wrong direction if they follow them. At one point I had my suspicions about the killer's identity, but I hadn't really appreciated all of the nuances to the clues to give me confidence that my theory was correct. In the end, the author wraps up the mystery with an exciting conclusion that will leave the readers satisfied but wanting more.

This is a terrific series and I can't wait to read more. It hits all the right notes in what I look for in a cozy mystery - strong, interesting, and likable characters, strong mysteries that keep me guessing, a plot the flows and keeps me turning pages, and witty dialogue with added humor. I will definitely be back for more in this series.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

The temperature hovered around a near-perfect eighty degrees as the sun began to set over the ocean, and I watched the bride walk down the aisle.

This is the third book in the Marygene Brown series. Marygene is catering the wedding of her former boyfriend and his obnoxious bride. The bride has chosen a murder mystery theme for the reception. When Marygene discovers the bride sprawled on the ground she assumes it it part of the game. It soon becomes clear that this is not a part of the plan. Marygene and her best friend Betsy must prove that they are not responsible for the death of the bridezilla.

I have enjoyed each of the books in this series. The Peach Diner sounds like somewhere I would want to eat. I was a bit surprised that Marygene would cater Alex's wedding after the way he treated her in the last book. That was just the tip of the iceberg. Alex was so incredibly horrible to Marygene and Betsy that I wanted to slap him. I never quite got the chemistry between him and Lucy.

Marygene is dating Paul. He works for the murder mystery company. I really did not click with him. i am so anxious for Marygene to realize the man that is right under nose.

Marygene and Betsy have one of the best friendships in anything that I read. I love how they each watch out for the other and always have each others back.

The mystery had a lot of twists and turns. I had suspicions early on about a character. The revelation was a bit unexpected. As always, Marygene's mother adds to the storyline. Her ghostly presence creates a great plot on its own.

The recipes sound yummy and I may have to try a couple.

This is fun series that I recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the third book in the Marygene Brown mystery series. Marygene is catering a mystery themed wedding for her ex and his new bride. It's not a shock when Marygene comes across the bride, Lucy, lying faced down in the kitchen, she assumes it is part of the mystery game. She quickly realizes she was wrong and that someone killed the bridezilla. Then the body disappears before the the crime scene techs get there. The blame is cast on Marygene and her best friend, Betsy. Naturally they set out to clear their name and find out who killed Lucy even though they didn't particularly care for her.

This was such a nice addition to the series. I have loved Marygene and Betsy's friendship from the beginning. They will do absolutely anything for each other and I feel that everyone needs a Betsy in their lives. She is hilarious. Marygene's mama's ghost provides subtle clues along the way. I do have to say though that I didn't particularly care for Alex in this book. I know he was grieving for his new wife but my word he treated Marygene just awful for the majority of the book. I liked the mystery. There were a few points where I was shocked at some of the things that were taking place. The reveal was really well done. I had my suspicions on who the killer was and I am proud so say that I was half right. I will definitely be looking for more in this series.

So… I used to read the Stephanie Plum series and loved them because of the dynamic between Stephanie and Lula. I gave up the series about book 18 because I couldn’t handle the love triangle any more, but I really missed the crazy exploits and sassy dialogue. I found it again in the Marygene Brown Mysteries by Kate Young. The dynamic between Marygene and Betsy is fabulous and I actually chuckled a few times… which rarely happens to me when I read cozies!

I had the pleasure of reading the first book in the series, Southern Sass and Killer Cravings, which I really enjoyed too, but the kooky dynamic between Marygene and Betsy was quite there yet. I missed book two, so I’m not sure if it was developed in that one, but Southern Sass and a Battered Bride had it in spades. And some of the things that happen in book three have the kooky and outrageous aspects that I loved from the Plum series.

Besides this great duo, many other characters in the series are very well developed and a pleasure to read too. I had mentioned in my book review for Southern Sass and Killer Cravings that I would like to visit most of the cozy towns, but I would want to actually live in Peach Cove Island, and after reading book three it’s even more true. The community is fantastic, peppered with some kooks and lots of caring people that I can’t wait to get to know even more.

In the first book the love aspect was kind of still up in the air, and from the tidbits I gathered from this book some things happened that made Marygene and Alex not get together, which I am actually happy about. And the new man on the horizon is a partner that I am very excited to see what will happen next.

The mystery was very well cultivated and it took me by surprise, which I always love when that happens. Southern Sass and a Battered Bride is a fantastic addition to the series and to the cozy genre. Although I don’t go back and read a book if I miss it in a cozy series, I will be reading book two…. And am really looking forward to book four!

Although the third in the series, Southern Sass and a Battered Bride was the first instalment for me. Kate Young's series features Marygene Brown who owns the Peach Diner along with her sister, Jena Lynn. Marygene is providing the catering for a murder/mystery-themed wedding for her childhood sweetheart, Alex Myers and bridezilla Lucy Carmichael. Marygene is managing to put a smile on her face for the nuptials, but then she finds Lucy lying on the floor sprawled out in front of the wedding cake covered with funnel cake batter.

The cast of characters is completely engaging, especially Marygene’s best friend and co-worker, Betsy and Aunt Vi. Marygene has strong bonds with Jena Lynn and Sam, her brother, as well as her father, Eddie, and even the spirit of her dead mum. Set on Peach Cove Island, Georgia this book is jammed with drama and action. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Southern Sass and a Battered Bride and I will be checking out the first instalment, Southern Sass and Killer Cravings as soon as I can.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

There are so many twists and turns in this book you will never want to put it down. Marygene finds herself in the uncomfortable position of catering her ex-boyfriend's wedding but then the bride turns up dead.....or is she?

The plot is excellent and the mystery fast paced with some suspense and topped off with a dash of romance. I haven't read the first two books in the series and had no trouble following this story but will certainly go back to read them too.

Thanks to Kensington and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.

With an intriguing and complex plot, this book was totally compelling, I especially liked the quirky southern characters, some of whom I wanted to reach into the pages and shake and others I just wanted to give a big hug. That’s how realistic the characters were; they joined me in my living room each evening and we chatted together about our days and the murders that were happening instead of the wedding that was supposed to happen. Marygene Brown ends up catering the wedding of her teen-aged sweetheart Alex, and he’s not marrying her. Instead he is marrying a newcomer to town, Lucy Carmichael, who has done nothing to endear herself to the little town’s residents since she is self-centered and demanding. Nevertheless, Marygene agrees to the catering job and that wedding becomes the wedding of the century, mostly because the bride is not exactly ready for the reception. Face down and dead in the diner’s catering tent, Lucy appears to be the victim of foul play and Marygene is, of course, a prime suspect. When Detective Thornton is brought over from the mainland to investigate, the conflict really begins. Marygene has to prove that she and her best friend Betsy are innocent and that there is someone who wants the two of them dead, also. This is a fun romp through a mystery with the spirit of Marygene’s deceased mama giving her advice and Marygene falling for someone new, leaving Alex, the grieving groom to handle his grief on his own. I really enjoyed the fast-pace of the story and the handy recipes included at the end. Yum! This tale is told humor, with one surprising revelation after another. This will go down as one of my favorite cozy mysteries this year...highly entertaining with laugh aloud incidents. Fans of cozies and those who just love a well-written mystery will definitely want to read this one!

Southern Sass and a Battered Bride is book three in the series. Marygene’s mama’s ghost warns her that all is not well with the wedding she is catering. Besides the fact that it is for her ex-boyfriend and the bridezilla from hell. She expected everything would not go according to plan, mainly because the plans keep changing. But Marygene never expected the bride to end up dead at the reception, and her body goes missing.

Characters in this series are always exciting to read about. They have great personalities, even when they are not at their best. The locations, food, and people of the town are described so well you can almost hear and see it all. A bridezilla is nothing new in a story or real life, but how many people have to put up with one that is marrying their ex? This bride has caused a great deal of anger, and it looks like someone wants revenge. Suspects come out of the woodwork, the evidence doesn’t match up for the investigators, and where is the victim’s body? Marygene’s mama, a ghost, isn’t helping matters when she keeps popping in to warn Marygene that bad things are happening. It seems that not only is Marygene a suspect, but so is her best friend.

This is a tantalizing story filled with wit, fun, and action. The killer comes as a bit of a surprise, but more the motive than the actual character. The bride, whom it seems no one likes, treats everyone as if she is entitled to their worship, and the bridezilla part isn’t just because it’s her wedding. After some harrowing action, Marygene, Betsy, and mama, even though she is a ghost, solve the crime and catch the killer, but not before the girl’s lives are put in danger. Southern Sass and a Battered Bride is an excellent story that will keep readers guessing and eager to read the next book in the series.

(Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional. Marygene and Betsy, her best friend, get along really well and they are more like sisters than best friends. They will do whatever needs to be done to be sure that each other is safe. When they are both accused of a murder, they know that they have to find the real killer before they get put away. There was a lot of family drama going on and most of it was bad. Marygene’s Mama, who happens to be a spirit, is very helpful and watches over Marygene and her family.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I could see in my mind’s eye all the chaos going around me. The mystery was well plotted and it had numerous twists and turns that kept me guessing. I was totally surprised with the reveal at the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Whenever you get to spend time with Marygene, Betsy and Mama. you know you are in for a fun time.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

This is the third book in the Marygene Brown series by Kate Young. Southern Sass and a Battered Bride is a very unique murder mystery themed wedding that is saturated in Southern Charm. This book has it all! It is filled with family drama, accusations, betrayal, murder and even a bank robbery! There are many twist and turns from the beginning and Young will keep you guessing throughout the book! I have not read the the first two books in this series but Young’s well developed characters and intriguing plot kept this book in my hands! I will definitely go back and read the other two. I recommend you read this book if you enjoy murder mystery with all that Southern Charm!

SOUTHERN SASS AND A BATTERED BRIDE, the third Marygene Brown Mystery, is one wild ride! Fasten your seatbelts and hang on tight.

I enjoyed the two previous books in this Southern cozy series, but this third installment is over-the-top greatness. Protagonist Marygene faces a lot of trials here starting with catering her longtime sweetheart’s wedding reception…where the bridezilla is murdered and disappears. This is followed by life and death danger, robbery, a body dump, and the ultimate frame job. I do not want to give too much of the plot away. Marygene and her best friend Betsy become the prime suspects, and Marygene, with the help of her ghostly mother, will not rest until the mystery is solved.

Author Kate Young has created a wonderful, quirky group of characters with a small community island setting. Everyone is related, by birth or marriage, and gossip is king. Marygene has baggage from her abusive past that she is bravely working through and doing her best to morph the relationship with her high school sweetheart Alex from romance to friendship. She is strong, resilient, and determined. She is driven to help victims get justice with the help of her deceased mother who is trying to make amends while in limbo herself. Alex, always hot-headed, lashes out at Marygene at one point, and it is so vicious that it brought tears to my eyes. Author Young makes readers care that much about the characters and their world.

The story is fast paced and compelling. It was truly impossible to put down – I just had to keep reading to see what would happen next. Like I said above, a wild ride. There are plenty of clues and lots of misdirection, things happen that totally change the direction of the puzzle. I had my suspicions about one obvious character, but I was blown away by how it all finally played out.

I am stingy with my five star ratings, but SOUTHERN SASS AND A BATTERED BRIDE is worthy. It is definitely one of my favorite reads of the year, and I cannot wait to see what Marygene gets into next. Highly recommended to any cozy mystery reader, especially those who enjoy a Southern setting, zany tight-knit characters, and ghosts.

I received an ARC of this title from the Author and Kensington Books through NetGalley and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

Book #3 in the Southern Sass series by Kate Young is the best one yet. Maryjean finds herself catering the wedding of her ex Alex. These stories should be read in order to get the best understanding of the characters. Maryjean's history with Alex is complex and she will always care for him, but there are plenty of reasons why the didn't work. But still, she is acting the "better" man by catering, even though she and Bridezilla Lucy will never be friends. The couple also have an unusual reception planned and Maryjean's kind-of boyfriend Paul is in charge of that part of the event. All is going smoothly until the bride is found dead and then her body disappears. Alex goes off the deep end and accuses Maryjean and Betsy of being involved and they have to rush to prove their innocence. The story is full of nonstop action, but also how family and friends stick together. The mystery is full of twists and also Maryjean's growing attraction to another man. All this while trying to prove her innocence while evidence says otherwise. Her BFF Betsy steals a scene of two and provides some comedic moments. Kate Young is becoming one of my favorite mystery authors.

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of SOUTHERN SASS AND A BATTERED BRIDE (Book 3 of the Marygene Brown Mysteries) by Kate Young in exchange for an honest review. Marygene Brown has accepted that her childhood sweetheart, Alex Myers, has moved on to another love, Lucy Carmichael. Marygene, however, is required neither to approve of the deceitful way he acted when beginning to court Lucy nor to actually like the rude, loathsome woman. For the sake of her lifetime friendship with Alex, Marygene agreed to cater the wedding despite Lucy’s bridezilla antics. It seems like the entire town shows up for the nuptials and sees the bride’s body sprawled in front of the wedding cake and covered in batter. Then, the body mysteriously disappears. Marygene is soon dodging attempts on her life and situations designed to frame her for the murder. With a little help from the ghost of her mother and her best friend Betsy, Marygene will endeavor to figure out what happened to the bride.

I liked this book. I recommend this book to fans of the series. I recommend this book to fans of cozy mysteries featuring murder, island life, ghosts, complicated family, and food.

Southern Sass and a Battered Bride“ by Kate Young the 3rd instalment in the "A Marygene Brown Mystery" series. I love this series so much!
I really enjoy visiting Peace Cove Island, Georgia and the Peach Diner. I love the island setting and Marygene and her diner family. The story is filled with quirky characters, like Betsy and Aunt Vi they are such a hoot! I was surprised by what happened and drawn in for the ride of finding out what happened to the bride.

I found myself so engrossed in the story that I read it in one sitting. It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I didn’t completely guess whodunnit until Marygene did.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 4 to come out!

I received a free, advance copy of this book and this is my unbiased and voluntary review.

Nothing says love like a dead bride covered in batter on her wedding day.

Marygene never thought she would be catering her childhood wedding as she dream of being his wife. But she finds herself catering his wedding to her dismay and to make things worse finding the bride dead on the floor covered in cake batter. Soon the body will disappear. What a sticky situation!

Marygene, Betsy and her mama will find away to solve the case. A fun cozy read.

I hadn't read the previous books in this series and wish that I had. Young did a good job of filling in some back stories but I was really struggling with why Marygene Brown would have ever been involved with Alex Myers.
In this book, he's marrying another woman, Lucy. And Lucy is... well, let's go with she's a jerk. And a bridezilla. When Lucy ends up dead after the wedding, Marygene becomes an obvious suspect but Alex also wildly accuses his own cousin, Betsy, who is Marygene's best friend.
The book is a wild romp with some pretty outrageous exploits on the part of our heroine who is pulled into the mystery, not by her own curiosity, but because she seems to be part of some collateral damage.
I hope that future books don't fall into the love triangle that could result as a part of the end of this book but I think Young is sidestepping that possibility (thank goodness.) I did enjoy the fact that Marygene's ghostly mother was used lightly.

A Wedding should be a joyous occasion but this one has its problems, starting with the fact that only the groom seems to like the bride (who is a total Bridezilla), secondly Peach Cove Diner are catering the event (where everyone thought that Marygene would be the bride as the groom is her ex-boyfriend Alex!), the groom seems to be getting cold feet, but not half as cold as the bride's when post ceremony they are having a murder mystery game as part of the celebration with the bride playing the corpse, only she isn't playing - she IS a corpse, only then she goes missing.

Now someone seems to be setting up Marygene and Betsy as the killers and the only local Deputy able to help is Javier, so the Detective that tried to pin a previous death on Marygene has to be brought in, will Marygene and Betsy survive everything or will they be joining Marygene's Mama as ghosts?

Thrilling cozy mystery! I adore this series and didn’t think I could love it more then I already did. Until I read Southern Sass and Battered Bride! Yes ok ok it’s my favorite book in this series! I hate to say that because I love them all but this one has totally stolen my heart. Marygene shows us how to handle an Ex with class when she sets out to help her Ex Alex and his bride to be Lucy by catering their wedding. Sometimes they say things well planned never turn out how you want- in this case that proves true. As the bride to be becomes the victim this book takes it up a notch I wasn’t expecting in this surprise ending! As a huge fan of this series I would say it’s a good stand-alone but as a series addict I must encourage you to read them all! Loved this!

Marygene's childhood sweetheart is getting married to the horrible Lucy Carmichael and she is catering the event. Marygene does her best to smile through her disdain of the whole affair, especially since she senses something isn't entirely right with the bride. The theme is a murder mystery and Lucy herself wants to be the center of attention as the victim of the crime. As Marygene checks on last minute set ups, she discovers Lucy's body but it appears to no longer be part of the act and that Lucy has actually met her untimely demise. Can Marygene help solve the mystery before she and those she loves dear be harmed or murdered in the process? Book 3 of 3, quick fun read. Very entertaining. Sweet storyline with suttle romance and great recipes at the end. Highly reccomend for those who enjoy light romance, murder mysteries southern charm and humor. Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the book and opportunity to review this title in exchange of my fair and honest opinion.

Slow your roll...Alex married that mean girl Lucy? What's up w/that????? I must say that was so surprising that I yelled out, "He married her!" at work. Oopsy!
And who is Paul? What happened to Deputy Reyes?

I know...I know...I said I wasn't invested in the series but I guess I was wrong.

This book picks up at least a year or so after the previous books events.
And goodness, did the writer kick up the drama & suspense for this one. Stimulating mystery.

I really like Teddy. I think Marygene has chemistry with him. Ah well..I must be the only one who thinks that as her romantic options are with others.

Southern Sass and a Battered Bride by Kate Young is the 3rd book in the series, and I have to say I believe this is my all time favorite cozy series. I love the diner, the characters, and most times I am laughing as I read the book. This as previous books is action packed, and keeps you guessing until close to the end. I definitely would recommend this book to everyone.

I received a ARC from NetGalley and also the publisher and am under no obligation to leave a favorable review, all opinions expressed here are my own.

Everyone needs a friend like Besty, an Aunt Vi, and a guardian angel like Mama. This is the first book I have read of this series and it sucked me in from the beginning. I had a good understanding of the characters and felt the replay the book did was short and to the point, just what I needed to get the full background. The twist and turns had me engaged and rooting for Marygene to find the killer. The way that Javier treated her was awesome as you can tell a new romance is on the horizon. I can't wait for the next book.

Southern Sass and a Battered Bride by Kate Young is the 3rd book in the Marygene Brown series, and another splendid addition. Marygene left Atlanta behind and goes home to Peach Cove Island to help her sister Jena Lynn run the family business, Peach Diner. Marygene's mother passed away two years ago, but Marygene keeps seeing her mom's ghost, and she warns Marygene whem danger is coming. When Marygene ends up catering her ex's wedding, and the bride is found dead, Marygene is on the case. I loved this book, it's my favorite in the series so far. I found myself laughing out loud through the whole book. I strongly recommend this book to cozy mystery book lovers, like me.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
