Harriet’s life is changing and she doesn’t like it, especially when it comes in the form of a loud-mouthed mockney, cockney soap star...
‘Plain Jane’ Harriet sees nothing wrong in being efficient, polite and to the point. She has high standards even if others think she’s an over-the-top perfectionist.
When she is offered a job as a housekeeper at a successful actor’s home she puts aside her misgivings and accepts it. ‘Big’ Frankie Fellows may be the nation’s favourite soap hunk but Harriet finds him loud, common and uncouth. Frankie doesn’t understand the concept of personal space or embarrassment and is everything that Harriet isn’t.
Totally out of her comfort zone, Harriet is starting to question her own outlook on life.
Marina Johnson loves all things British, including the weather when it stops raining. She keeps trying to write something serious and straightforward but it never quite turns out that way. She also writes under the pen name Joanne Ryan https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
A brilliant observational comedy. They do say there is someone out there for everyone but Harriet is a character who is fixed in her ways with a work ethic so strong that she has no head for romance. She is also bereaved having recently lost her mother and job. When Harriet starts working as a housekeeper for famous actor Frankie Fellows other people appear to be the last thing on her mind. But there are other people, characters that are perfectly matched to the plot and shape Harriet's new 'way'. The setting is a rolling mansion with its own pool and plenty of wine and pies that I particularly enjoyed reading. The resolution to the story is awesome - a nice touch of the silent supporting character.
A very entertaining and enjoyable story. Great characters and a pleasant story. Marina is an excellent underrated author. I've loved all the books I've read👍
I loved this book. It's a unique and amusing story about grief, bravery and love with plenty of laughs along the way. The slightly weird and old fashioned Harriot gets the shock of her life when she ends up working for celebrity Frankie. She's forced out of her comfort zone and doesn't quite know what to do with herself. Marina writes the most quirky, endearing and enjoyable characters which are always a pleasure to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 5 stars 🌟
On the surface they make an unlikely couple, prim and proper Harriet and loudmouth, rough type, soap star Frankie. Very well written characters that are both endearing in their own way. I really enjoyed this book, full of quirky characters, a good story and a fantastic twist at the end. Thoroughly recommended reading! A great romcom that made me smile throughout.
This is a page Turner right from the start. Wonderful, emotional, funny, with very little angst. This is about two people meeting in the most exception way. After this book, download Big Frankie, you can read Frankie side of the story it worth it.
One of my favourite books by Marina Johnson, I just loved the characters, Harriet especially. The book really made me laugh. I'd definitely read it again xx
I read this in about 3 hours, it is a charming story about a reserved woman who has little experience of the world and little self esteem in some ways but does not appreciate the nuances of the modern world. Enjoyable but cannot for the life of me see the point of the last chapter - unnecessary and spoiled the book in alot of ways
I really liked this story. At first I didn't think I would because Harriet was so prim and proper. She needed to loosen up. Frankie is the exact opposite and opposites attract. It couldn't wait to finish it.
