Część piąta cyklu relacjonuje okres od 12 do 20 sierpnia 1944 roku, w którym narrator po przybyciu do portu La Pallice podejmuje próbę przedostania się do Paryża. Mimo katastrofalnej sytuacji na froncie; jest już sierpień 1944 roku, w południowej Francji wydaje się, że czas stanął w miejscu. Okupacyjny aparat biurokratyczny działa bez zarzutu, a szef flotylli najchętniej spędza czas na rybach. Buchheim próbuje poruszyć niebo i ziemię, żeby dostać samochód, którym mógłby pojechać do Paryża, gdzie ma zamiar odszukać uwięzioną Simone. Po dotarciu do Paryża okazuje się, że więzienie, gdzie miała być Simone, jest puste, ponieważ Niemcy wywieźli wszystkich do Ravensbrück. Buchheim udaje się więc w kierunku Rzeszy.

Lothar-Günther Buchheim (February 6, 1918 – February 22, 2007) was a German author, painter, and art collector. He is best known for his novel Das Boot (1973), which became an international bestseller and was adapted in 1981 as an Oscar-nominated film.

Ein literarisches Pendant zu einem Roadmovie, das ist noch das Beste, was sich über diesen Ziegel sagen läßt. Allerdings hat der Filmzuschauer auch den langweiligsten Streifen nach zwei Stunden überstanden, die Lektüre von 1462 Seiten nimmt eine ganze Menge mehr an Zeit in Anspruch. Das größte Manko sind die Landschaftsskizzen und Ortsbeschreibungen, sie nehmen etwa 800 Seiten in Anspruch. Dabei handelt es sich um alles andere als beseelte Schilderungen oder eingefangene Glücks- oder Schreckensmomente,
Es sieht fast so aus als wollte der Maler Buchheim die in den Kriegswirren verloren gegangenen Skizzen wenigstens sprachlich wiederherstellen. Ein verständlicher Vorsatz, aber vollkommen untauglich für einen Roman. Denn auch die umfangreichste Skizzenmappe lässt sich einigermaßen zügig durchblättern, der Betrachter kann sich die besten Stücke herauspicken und denen die gebührende Aufmerksamkeit widmen. Aber ein Buch folgt nun mal anderen Gesetzen, zumal die Beschreibungen der Landschaften wie die Portraits der handelnden Personen alles andere als anschaulich sind.
Eigentlich wären gut 650 Seiten immer noch ausreichend Spielraum für eine einigermaßen überzeugende Handlung, aber diese Ansammlung von Momentaufnahmen wirkt, angesichts des gewaltigen Umfangs unbefriedigend.
Zumal es etliche lose Fäden gibt, das Schicksal von Verleger Peter Suhrkamp lässt sich leicht recherchieren, aber was mit dem Alten und der Résistance-verdächtigen Geliebten Simone geschieht, bleibt in diesem Buch offen. Diese restlichen Handlungsfäden hat sich Buchheim für das nächste Buch aufgespart.

Wieder einmal schafft es Buchheim die Absurdität des Krieges in einer nichtendenwollenden Fiebertraum-Odyssee zu versinnbildlichen. Eine ehrlichere Version des fatalen Chaos und den Abgründen der Menschheit muss schwer zu finden sein.

It’s a very long-winded book, where the author describes his experiences at the end of WWII. His journey starts with a normal order and turns in an revenge driven odyssey.

What I liked:
- the realistic scenario
- the details about the hierarchy and the organization of the war
- the authentic view on the horrors and burdens of war

What I did not like:
- The length of the book, filled with unnecessary details and episodes of the childhood of the author, his sex life and never ending descriptions of the landscape
- The sexual objectification of women
- The derogatory approach of the protagonist with his fellow human beings and his military subordinates
- The self-staging of the author as a hero and opponent of the Nazis, although he himself has made a career in this system and works on the propaganda. This is implausible and acts like an attempt to wash
away from the authors own guilt for the crimes of the Nazi regime.

I didn't know that "Das Boot" is actually the first book of a loosely related trilogy or I would have picked up Die Festung much earlier since I am a huge fan of The Boat. What becomes clear almost from the beginning is that Mr. Buchheim is a painter and one has to read through tons of elaborate descriptions of colors, shades, conditions of light, architectural descriptions and countless landscape descriptions in order to get to the "plot". However, to me it was worthy to find out how the story continued and how it all worked out in the end. To me a very interesting, albeit lengthy read and an insight on a world at war on the brink of collapsing but still going on. My wife was very happy when I finally finished this behemoth of a book and re-emerged to the real world. However, I'm not sure if and when I will tackle the final book since that one only very loosely takes on the open threads of the first two books. Probably I will take on the u-boat documentary first.

This book was not mine. Couldn't finish the 1500 pages... I guess it's only for those who are REALLY interested in u-boat war or the year of invasions 1944.
