When I'm not up to my knees in nappies, I write children's books. I also spend a fair amount of time eating chocolate. I try to write funny, read-aloud books that parents will enjoy as much as children - after all, if you have to share the same stories umpteen times, you may as well enjoy them.
I hope you like my books enough to read them umpteen times. Thank you - Michelle.

Erottui edukseen uusien kuvakirjojen massasta, muttei silti oikein siepannut.

This book has a fantastic feminist theme that is great for all children. My two year old son absolutely loves this book and asks for it almost every night. I’d highly recommend this for parents!

She Rex by Michelle Robinson, with illustrations by Deborah Allwright, is a vibrant and comical children’s book that captures the essence of inclusivity and gender equality in a fun, accessible way. The illustrations are bold and expressive, perfectly complementing the energetic tone of the story. Allwright’s artistic style is playful, with exaggerated colors and characters that pop off the page, making the book visually captivating for young readers. The visual humor in the illustrations enhances the story’s lightheartedness, while also reinforcing the book’s message that dinosaurs—and by extension, all toys and interests—are for everyone, regardless of gender.

The story revolves around a brother and sister, Ed and Maisy, and a debate over who gets to play with dinosaurs. When Ed refuses to share his dinosaur toy with his sister, declaring that “dinosaurs are for boys,” Maisy’s imagination takes over, and she introduces her own dinosaur—She Rex, a fierce, multicolored T. rex that is every bit as loud and strong as Ed’s. Maisy’s She Rex is bold, powerful, and unapologetically girly, showing that girls can love dinosaurs just as much as boys, and that dinosaurs come in all colors and styles.

The narrative begins with Ed claiming that dinosaurs are a “boy thing,” laughing at Maisy’s idea of a multicolored dinosaur, dismissing it as unrealistic and “lame.” However, Maisy stands her ground, declaring that her dinosaurs are just as mean, loud, and fierce as any boy’s dinosaur. Despite Ed’s skepticism and teasing, Maisy confidently insists that She Rex is real, and in a delightful twist, She Rex suddenly appears—huge, colorful, and every bit as ferocious as her name suggests. This moment of playful surprise not only reinforces Maisy’s belief in her own ideas but also serves as a metaphor for the strength and validity of girls’ interests and imaginations.

At its core, She Rex promotes a message of gender equality, encouraging children to break free from stereotypes that dictate what boys and girls are “supposed” to like. The book subtly challenges the outdated notion that certain toys or interests are gender-exclusive, showing that boys and girls can both enjoy dinosaurs (or any other interest) equally. The multicolored She Rex represents a world where everyone—regardless of gender—can be strong, loud, and fierce.

This book teaches young readers that representation matters. Maisy’s belief in her own She Rex symbolizes the importance of having characters, toys, and interests that reflect everyone’s experiences. By the end of the story, Ed’s mocking attitude fades as he realizes that Maisy is just as much of an expert on dinosaurs as he is, highlighting the idea that boys and girls have equal rights to their passions and interests.

She Rex is a fun, empowering read that not only entertains but also delivers an important message about gender equality and representation. It’s a great way to introduce young readers to the concept of breaking gender stereotypes and encouraging them to embrace their individuality. Through its bold illustrations and lively story, the book creates a world where every child—boy or girl—can be fierce, imaginative, and unapologetically themselves.

Feminististä sanomaa kantava lasten kuvakirja, jossa isoveli saa ihan kunnolla pataansa.

Funny book, where a younger sister argues with her brother over the existence of a multi-colored, mean she Rex, who rivals his toy t rex.

The story has a feminist vibe to it because of the sister’s strong feminist girl personality. But it’s also a cute sibling book, with siblings who do play together despite their arguments.

A very cool and colourful book about being a girl that steps out of the tired out patterns you often see with a picture book that encompasses these themes. This would be a good ks1/ks2 book to add to speak about gender roles. Recommended.

Hirmusisko on riimitelty sujuvasti suomeksi, joten ääneenluku onnistuu oikeita kohtia painottaen. Tarinakin ihan kiva.
